Analysis and mathematical modelling of industrial truck silencers

Nordle, Bjorn, Johansson, Marcus January 2007 (has links)

The currently low requirements on sound emissions for industrial trucks are expected to be raised in the near future. The company Kalmar Industries AB, which develop, produce and market industrial trucks, want to improve their truck silencers as a precaution to the future harder restrictions and also to improve their competitiveness. The sound emission produced by a vehicle depends on type and range of application it is designed for but the dominant part of the sound is usually produced by the engine and silencer.

A new measuring method is developed for studying sound emanating through the silencer system. The analysis of the measurement data establishes that the silencers are not working well. The simulations made with SIDLAB, which is a computer programme for calculating the propagation of sound in ducts, confirms that the silencers are inefficient and that they are simply too small.

A simulation which implements a parallel resonator in the main silencer shows that it is possible to make great improvements in reducing the noise from the truck as well as meeting requirements on space.

Mathematical modelling based on linearity and one-dimensional interaction between the silencer elementsis advantageous and gives very good results when understanding, analysing and simulating the silencer. The simulation tool SIDLAB works well and saves a lot of time by its fast modelling and easy interface.

Evaluation of exclusive heavy-vehicle lanes on the Interstate Highway 35 corridor in Austin, Texas

Mansfield, Charles Taylor 16 December 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to evaluate potential travel time impacts of the implementation of exclusive heavy-vehicle lanes on the Interstate Highway 35 (IH 35) corridor, in the Austin metropolitan area. The analysis considers heavy vehicles (trucks) and non-heavy vehicles (cars) as separate system elements and as an integrated system. The study modeled traffic operations on IH 35, during the AM and PM peak hours, under two traffic scenarios, Existing and Inside Truck-Only Lanes using the software VISSIM 5.4. The limits of the study are FM 1431 in Round Rock, on the north, and SH 45 near Buda, on the south. The Existing scenario modeled traffic operations under current IH 35 geometric conditions and traffic control rules, in which trucks are prohibited from the inside lane and cars are allowed in all lanes. The Inside Truck-Only Lanes scenario modeled traffic operations under the assumption that trucks are restricted to the inside lane only and cars are prohibited from the inside lane. Travel times across the study area corridor were measured in the models to compare the performance of the Inside Truck-Only Lanes scenario relative to the Existing scenario. / text

Mobilios lauko kavinės projektas / Mobile outside coffe project

Maraška, Arūnas 07 September 2010 (has links)
Mobile livelihoods: a case study of Lithuanian international long-haul truck drivers / Mobilus pragyvenimo šaltinis: Lietuvos tolimųjų reisų vairuotojų tyrimas

Gordon, William 07 June 2011 (has links)
Research Question: how are Lithuanian international long-haul truck drivers’ livelihoods constructed in terms of work, home, and everyday life? Research Problem and significance. The aim of this research is to look at work, home, and everyday life in the context of mobility and mobile livelihoods in Lithuanian international long-haul truckers. Portrayals of truckers in media and pop culture are often negative or sensationalized, including stories about truck accidents, smuggling, immoral behaviors, or problems with the law. This research is a response to such perceptions, motivated by the fact that there is no qualitative research on truck drivers in Lithuania. Research Tasks 1. Create a theoretical base for analyzing and interpreting mobile lives using various theoretical approaches on mobility, place, home, community, and boundaries. 2. Present and analyze empirical work from the field of Lithuanian long-haul truck drivers based on emic frameworks of ‘kasdienybė’ and ‘namai’. 3. Apply theoretical approach of mobile livelihoods along with emic frameworks of ‘kasdienybė’ and ‘namai’ from the Lithuanian case toward an analysis of Cameroon long-haul truck drivers’ work-lives. Methods. Fieldwork conducted with Lithuanian international long-haul truck drivers who spent 5-6 days or more on the road at a time, with just 2-4 days per month ‘at home’ (in Lithuania). Empirical section relies on two primary informants with whom I spent a total of 3 ½ weeks traveling. Research... [to full text] / Tyrimo klausimas.

Performance based analysis of current South African semi trailer and b-double trailer designs

31 August 2010 (has links)
South African heavy vehicles are currently designed according to prescriptive standards designed and enforced by the National Department of Transport (DoT); these standards are regulated in terms of mass, dimensions and vehicle configuration. However, the current prescriptive standards leave little room for innovation in terms of heavy vehicle design. Performance Based Standards, or PBS, is a new Australian based innovative alternative to the current heavy vehicle prescriptive standards, mass, dimensions and vehicle configuration. PBS seeks to align actual vehicle performance efficiencies, productivity and safety objectives as well as road and bridge infrastructure to the current road network. Vehicle performance measures are based on engineering and science, supporting superior safety and known road and bridge wear performance criteria. PBS produces “a result orientated approach” to improved heavy vehicle operations and safety rather than a „one size fits all approach‟ utilised by the current prescriptive legislation. Currently, dynamic vehicle simulations are not carried out on South African manufactured vehicle combinations. Evidence exists that this has, in some cases, resulted in safety compromises. The computer dynamic vehicle simulation technology developed and validated could be employed for the credible assessments of the vehicle design concepts/prototypes for compliance with PBS. This service, which includes vehicle performance simulation and testing, development of high productivity vehicle concepts, assessment and development of risk management strategies, advice on safety and productivity issues, would have a substantial commercialisation potential for the implementation in the larger transport industry in South Africa. / Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2009.

Simulation and evaluation of an articulated forklift truck / Simulering och utvärdering av en midjestyrd kombitruck

Johansson, Emil January 2014 (has links)
Today’s demand on forklift trucks performance and efficiency is high. The productivity is important but also the experience while handling the forklift. The handling has to be simple and genuine to make the driver feel confident and safe. To achieve high performance steering in articulated trucks, a hydraulic power system is often used.Simulation software are a powerful tool in development processes. The program gives the industry a possibility to develop, analyze and evaluate constructions and models more efficient. The purpose of this master thesis is to identify and increase the knowledge about the main challenges in the hydraulic steering system in an articulated forklift. The hydraulic system has been modelled in the simulation software Hopsan and validated against data from measurements performed on the forklift. The different challenges have been identified based on tests and the simulation results. For a deeper understanding of the system a literature study, mainly about the key components, has been done during the master thesis. A number of suggestions for improvement have been developed with focus on increasing the steering performance. The concepts and ideas have been evaluated and tested in the simulation model. The project resulted in a validated simulation model of the articulation and a number of suggested improvements on the hydraulic steering system.

The impact of negative attitude towards safety compliance in Unitrans fuel and chemical.

Sondezi, Mduduzi Mzwandile Olive. January 2012 (has links)
South Africa is among those countries that have the highest rate of road accidents in the world. Road accidents have a negative impact on a country's development; therefore reduction of road accidents is a priority for the South African government in general, and road transporters in particular. Unitrans Fuel and Chemical (UFC) is one of the major road transporters of dangerous goods in South Africa; this study was undertaken to explore the impact of negative attitudes on safety compliance at UFC by its truck drivers. The focus of the study was informed by the element of human failures, and the role played by such failures in road accidents. In light of driver behaviour being a product of non-tangible elements such as attitudes, feelings and beliefs, the quantitative study undertaken, sets out to explore the impact of negative attitudes on safety compliance. A sample was taken from the UFC's Clairwood depot, and data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics. Other non parametric tools were also used to analyse data. The findings are presented in Chapter Four. The researcher used a Likert Scale instrument to measure elements of attitude amongst UFC drivers. The results clearly indicate attitude plays a major role in the lack of safety compliance by drivers. The study also provides recommendations to address issues of driver attitude that are clearly illustrated by the figures in Chapter Four. Recommendations will allow UFC to address areas of negative driver attitude displayed by respondents to the questionnaire. The study recognizes that changing driver behaviour is not an easy task, and commends UFC for the effort applied in addressing this problem. / MBA. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 2012.

Fatigue and beyond : patterns of, and motivations for illicit drug use among long haul truck drivers

Richards, Naomi January 2005 (has links)
Long distance truck drivers are considered a special interest group in terms of drug----- driving research and policy due to high rates of use, involvement of drugs in truck accidents and the link between drug use and work related fatigue. Qualitative interview data was collected from 35 long haul truck drivers in South East Queensland and analysed using NVivo 2.0. High rates of licit and illicit drug use (particularly amphetamines) were reported. However, unlike previous studies which focus on fatigue, this research found overlapping and changing motivations for drug use during individual lifetimes. Using Becker's model of a drug use 'career' it was revealed that some drivers begin illicit drug use before they begin truck driving. As well as fatigue, powerful motives such as peer pressure, wanting to fit the trucking 'image', socialisation, relaxation and addiction were reported. These may need to be considered along side fatigue in the development of effective drug prevention or cessation policies for truck drivers.
