Assessment and reduction of the impacts of large freight vehicles on urban traffic corridor performance

Increasing demand for road freight has lead to a widespread adoption of more-productive large freight vehicles (LFVs), such as B-Doubles, by Australia's road freight industry. Individual LFVs have a greater potential to impact traffic efficiency through their greater length and poorer longitudinal performance. However, this is offset to an extent as fewer vehicles are required to perform a given freight task on a tonne-km basis. This research has developed a means of characterising the effects that large freight vehicles have on the performance of an urban arterial corridor managed by signalised intersections. A corridor-level microsimulation model was developed from first principles, which modelled the longitudinal performance of individual vehicles to a greater accuracy than most existing traffic simulation software does. The model was calibrated from traffic counts and GPS-equipped chase car surveys conducted on an urban arterial corridor in Brisbane's southern suburbs. The model was applied to various freight policy and traffic management scenarios, including freight vehicle mode choice, lane utilisation and traffic signal settings; as well as the effectiveness of green time extension for approaching heavy vehicles. Benefits were able to be quantified in terms of reduced travel times and stop rates for both heavy and light vehicles in urban arterial corridors.

A proposta desenvolvida tem como objetivo o estudo dos enunciados para a identificação da identidade do caminhoneiro a partir de algumas temáticas de maior incidência na coleta. Foram utilizados 4.101 enunciados de caminhão coletados em treze títulos relacionados ao estudo desse assunto. A tese está composta de quatro capítulos. O primeiro capítulo tem como título ―A Análise do Discurso‖ e expõe dados históricos e conceituais desse campo de conhecimento para a análise dos enunciados. O segundo capítulo é ―O gênero enunciados de caminhão‖ e fala sobre gênero, enunciado e histórico dos enunciados de caminhão. Dynamic Management of Inspection Effort Allocation in an International Port of Entry (POE)

abstract: Every year, more than 11 million maritime containers and 11 million commercial trucks arrive to the United States, carrying all types of imported goods. As it would be costly to inspect every container, only a fraction of them are inspected before being allowed to proceed into the United States. This dissertation proposes a decision support system that aims to allocate the scarce inspection resources at a land POE (L-POE), to minimize the different costs associated with the inspection process, including those associated with delaying the entry of legitimate imports. Given the ubiquity of sensors in all aspects of the supply chain, it is necessary to have automated decision systems that incorporate the information provided by these sensors and other possible channels into the inspection planning process. The inspection planning system proposed in this dissertation decomposes the inspection effort allocation process into two phases: Primary and detailed inspection planning. The former helps decide what to inspect, and the latter how to conduct the inspections. A multi-objective optimization (MOO) model is developed for primary inspection planning. This model tries to balance the costs of conducting inspections, direct and expected, and the waiting time of the trucks. The resulting model is exploited in two different ways: One is to construct a complete or a partial efficient frontier for the MOO model with diversity of Pareto-optimal solutions maximized; the other is to evaluate a given inspection plan and provide possible suggestions for improvement. The methodologies are described in detail and case studies provided. Comment peut-on expliquer que le « stress » devienne une réalité pour les routiers alors qu’ils sont traditionnellement contraints à l’effort physique, et dans quelle mesure est-il sociologiquement organisé ? La gestion de flux en temps réel et la transformation en métier de service amène de nouvelles contraintes dont le stress en est son émanation sociale. Mon enquête se découpe en trois parties. La première vise à présenter le secteur et à montrer les points de tension qui se manifestent à l’échelle économique et macrosociologique. En seconde partie, j’aborde l’histoire du transport routier de marchandises dans son développement pendant les lois de coordination des transports jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Enfin, en troisième je rends compte des observations directes issues des voyages en cabine de conduite et des lieux de socialisation des routiers et je présente enfin une construction idéale-typique du stress en m’appuyant sur le rapport qu’ont les routiers envers les prescriptions et des marges de manoeuvre qu’ils mobilisent. / How can we explain that stress becomes a fact for long-distance truck drivers while they are tradionally forced to physical efforts ? Moreover, to what extend stress is it socialy organized ? Long-distance truck drivers’ work is the object of some complex prescriptions in an open world, in which its transformation from worker to a service job brings new contraints. Among them, stress is gradually imperative. I hope to see how this process enfolds. My investigation stands (out) in three parts. The first one presents the sector of french road freight. My goal is to show some points of tensions in the economic and macrosociological scales. In the second part, I’ll focus on the history of road transport through its development during the French coordination laws until today by following the institutional transformations of regulations and competition in European Union. Then, we shall analyse how stress spreads through our ideal-typical construction.

Concreto usinado : análise da variação da resistência à compressão e de propriedades físicas ao longo da descarga do caminhão betoneira / Ready-mixed concrete: analysis of the concrete strength variability against compression and its physical properties along the unloading of the concrete mixer truck

A crescente utilização do concreto, que é o produto mais fabricado no mundo em termos de volume, somada à pressão do mercado por redução de custos com manutenção das exigências mínimas para segurança do projeto, tem impacto direto na importância e necessidade do controle de qualidade do material. Para concretos usinados, predominantes em grandes centros urbanos, as normas do país preconizam a não utilização dos 15% iniciais e finais do volume total de concreto do caminhão betoneira para fins de ensaio. No entanto, devido a maior facilidade e agilidade, é constatada como prática comum nos canteiros de obra da região a coleta de amostras logo da primeira porção de concreto descarregado. Considerando tal procedimento, fora do padrão preconizado por norma, somado à ausência de normatização para aferição da qualidade do misturador e uniformidade da mistura do concreto e a importância dos ensaios de controle de qualidade dos concretos perante a segurança das estruturas, a presente pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar as variações de resistência à compressão e de propriedades físicas do concreto ao longo da descarga da mistura em caminhão betoneira. A fim de atingir a meta proposta, realizaram-se coletas de amostras em cinco pontos distintos, ao longo da descarga do concreto do caminhão betoneira, para cada um dos 65 lotes (amassadas) avaliados, considerando três diferentes traços de concreto. Para cada ponto de coleta foram avaliados a resistência à compressão, o abatimento de tronco de cone e o teor de agregado graúdo. Estatisticamente, foi constatado que há amassadas em que a variação do ponto de coleta influencia na resistência à compressão, no entanto não se pode afirmar o mesmo considerando critérios da ABECE, adotados como parâmetro de análise na falta de normatização específica para o tema. Não houve a formação de um perfil representativo das variações de resistência conforme o ponto de coleta, diferentemente do teor de agregado graúdo, em que se pode visualizar claramente um perfil em que há concentração de brita nos pontos extremos, início e final da coleta. Em relação à consistência, de modo geral, houve uma redução do ponto inicial ao final, dentro dos limites de indicados por norma. / The crescent utilization of concrete which in terms of volume, is the most produced product in the world, added to the pressure of the market to reduce the costs and maintenance of the safety minimum requirements of a project, make a direct impact on the material quality control’s importance and necessity. For ready-mixed concrete, mostly seen in large urban centers, the initial and final 15% usage of its total volume is not recommended by the country standards for test purposes. However, due to the ease, it is a common practice in construction sites of the region to collect samples once the first portion of the concrete is unloaded. Taking into account such procedure, which does not meet the standards recommended, added to the lack of standardization to assess the quality of the concrete mixer, the uniformity of the concrete mixture and the importance of the quality control tests of concrete under the safety of structures, the purpose of this research is to analyze the variations of the concrete strength when compressed and its physical properties along the discharge of the mixture made in a mixer truck. In order to achieve the proposed goal, there were sampling carried out at five different points along the discharge from the concrete mixer truck, for each of the 65 lots (batches) analyzed, considering three different types of concrete. Each sampling collected was analyzed by going through a slump test, compression strength and granulometry analysis. Statistically, it was proven that the sample point collection variation of some of the batches influences the compression strength, on the other hand the same cannot be found considering the ABECE criteria, used as analysis parameter in the absence of specific regulations for the subject. No representative profile of resistance variations based on the sample collection point was formed, in contrast to the coarse aggregate content, in which profile can be clearly seen a concentration of gravels at the extreme points, at the commencement and the end of the sample collection. Regarding its consistency, on the whole, there was a reduction from the initial and to the end point, respecting the regulations standards.

Foram levantados os custos de diferentes formas de transporte: com caminhões tanque, canais aplicadores, adutora móvel e adutora fixa. Foi utilizada uma metodologia que considera a estrutura de custo total de produção para a determinação dos custos de transporte (R$/m³). O custo total para cada sistema foi composto pelos custos fixos e variáveis. Nos custos fixos foram considerados a depreciação e remuneração do capital fixo e, nos custos variáveis, os gastos com operação de cada sistema, representados por: mão-de-obra, consumo de combustível, quando presente, manutenção e reparos. Os resultados desse estudo mostram que o transporte com adutora fixa apresenta as seguintes vantagens quando comparado ao transporte com caminhões: redução do custo com mão de obra, eliminação do custo com combustível, custo total 95 % inferior ao do transporte com caminhões / This work aimed to analyze the cost transportation of the vinasse produced by Santa Adélia Plant - Pereira Barreto. The costs of different ways of transportation were considered: with tank trucks, applicator channels, mobile and fixed pipeline. A methodology which considers the structure of total production cost for the determination of transportation costs (R$/m³). The total cost for each system was composed by the fixed and variable costs. In the fixed costs, it was considered the depreciation and the remuneration of the fixed capital and, in the variable costs, the expenditures with the operation of each system represented by: labor force, fuel consumption (when there is), maintenance and repairs. The results of this study show that the transportation with fixed pipeline presents the following advantages when compared to the transportation by trucks: reduction of the labor force cost, elimination of the fuel cost, and total cost 95 % inferior in relation to the truck transportation

Own observation or interviews with the dispatcher or the Head of Division I examined the information that I needed for further work. I have defined the tasks of the truck and I watched them work. Dispatcher can thanks to modern technology to monitor the movement of all assigned vehicles. Their movements are creating records that will allow me, through data processing and computer technology to re-compare the activities of all tracked vehicles. Esta dissertação apresenta um problema de otimização relacionado com a designação de rotas de carga completa para frota própria ou dedicada, visando a minimização dos custos de transporte numa rede de distribuição formada por fábricas uni-produto, centros de distribuição (consolidação) e clientes. Essas rotas são conjugadas formando ciclos fechados (viagens) para garantir a otimização do tempo através do movimento contínuo desta frota dedicada. A metodologia é aplicada em uma rede de distribuição de um fabricante de linha branca no Brasil. Além dos resultados econômicos favoráveis, outras contribuições para o tema de conjugação de rotas foram encontradas nesta dissertação, tais como, a regra de formação de caminhos, o limite para conjugação de rotas numa rede de distribuição e o desenvolvimento de uma estrutura para custear esses caminhos conjugados. O modelo de programação linear inteira desenvolvido mostrou-se apto a resolver problemas de tamanho real em tempo factível, mesmo com recursos computacionais comuns. / This thesis presents an optimization problem regarding the assignment of truckload lanes to a private or dedicated fleet to minimize transportation costs in a distribution network formed by single-product plants, distribution (consolidation) centers and clients. These lanes are conjugated in order to form closed cycles (trips) to guarantee time optimization through continuous movement of this dedicated fleet. This methodology is applied to a distribution network of a white goods manufacturer in Brazil. More than good economic results, there are others contributions for the theme of conjugated lanes in this thesis, such as, the rule of formation trips, the limit to conjugated lanes to a distribution network and the development of a structure to get the conjugated lanes\' costs. The model of integer linear program that was development is capable to solve the real problems in a reasonable time, even if with regular.
