This dissertation aims to reach three main goals: (a) contextualize and discuss the online campaigning’s ma in theoretical issues and empirical evidences, especially those regarding the actual phase of this phenomenon defined by social media use as a communication cha nnel for parties and candidate to performpolitical strategies, especially on Twitter; (b) Develop a new methodological approach to analyze different Twitter’s communication dimensions regarding its political functionalities in electoral contests(hyperlinks;hashtags;interactive features; with whom candidates interact; con tent and political functi ons of messages and what type of tweets attracts the greater number of retweets); (c) Verify how Twitter was used by the three main presidential candidates in 2010 Brazilian presidential election (the first time Brazilian Electoral Courte permitted the useof social media by political campaigns) using the methodological approach developed. The analysis ofofficial Twitter accounts of Dilma Rousseff (Labour Party), Marina Silva (Green Party) and José Serra (Brazilian Social Democracy Party) was helpful to test the methodological approach developed in this dissertation in order to fulfill some analytical gaps and mistakes in online campaigning’s literature such as the methods that are used by many scholars to verify if and how Twitter’s interactive features has being used by parties and candidates to communicate directly with citizens –and to fully comprehend what role Twitter played in the first Brazilian presidential election in which social media could be used by political campaigns. The empirical evidences reported in this study shed light to some singularities of Brazilian political campaigns on Twitter and make available important conclusions and data for future international comparative studies.

This thesis discusses the use of social media and social networking sites (SNS) for communication and politics, as well as the questions that arise regarding the use and the usefulness of these tools to the overlap of the fields of communication and politics. These are questions concerning the selective exposure, the possible online and offline political behavior, and even the types of relationships that are established in these digital social environments, for instance. Within this range of challenges to political communication in SNS, two are specifically interesting to this thesis, which are the political uses of the social networking sites and the voting behavior of citizens as an active audience in these communication environments. We made this choice especially due to the great political use of social networking sites, especially during election campaigns. Thus, we are interested in investigating how perceptions and effects of the mediacan, in theory, shap e political behavior. The Twitter was elected as the specific tool for this analysis. Your choice is justified by their level of use in the last election and some specific features, such as the necessarily short updates; the interaction that does not demand reciprocity; and its growing use for information dissemination. The third-person effect hypothesis was the theoretical and methodological model chosen for implementation of the empirical analysis. The model is about the perceived public opinion and what makes it unique is its relational nature, which emphasizes the discrepancy between perceptions of the effects of communication on others and self; linking the perception that the individual has about the environment to explanations for social action. Thus, it was considered appropriate and in line with the study developed due to their nature intrinsically linked to politics. The empirical verification o f hypo theses and research questions – developed based on the literature of political communication and the third -person effect – was done through a survey with users of that website. They were interviewed in the post-elect ion period of 2012 about their perceptions and political habits in that environment.

This study investigates the appropriations of Twitter's potentials to the fashion journalism in Brazil. We start from a conceptual approach considering journalism and fashion in their natures at the intersection of the ideas introduced by authors like Otto Groth, Luiz Beltrão, Gilles Lipovetsky and Lars Svendsen. We still present and discuss some boundaries of what we consider fashion journalism, in order to align the observation applied on the research. Then, we delimit the convergent scenario of contemporary journalism to fnally point the microblog Twitter as a protagonist expression of this behavior. The analytical-descriptive study combines research techniques and monitors eight profles of vehicles and journalistic professionals specialized in fashion during the month of January 2012. We propose a classifcation in the empirical research though analysis' categories of appropriation: (1) News, (2) Dialogue; (3) Commentary e (4) Convergence; the goal is to understand and delineate the uses for contemporary fashion journalism through these appropriations. In order to involve the specifcs of journalism specialized in fashion and the microblog we present a brief comparison between the editorial and personal profles, as well as confront the origin of media profles with the online platform. The results show that the typical behavior of cyberculture, in which appropriation is very important, is also manifested in the effective uses in Brazilian fashion journalism via Twitter. The potential of adaptation of microblogging spectra suggests the use is adjustable to the purpose of each vehicle or profession of journalism, highlighting that in common, the fashion press always goes in search of the public.

Evaluation of intra-set clustering techniques for redundant social media content

Jubinville, Jason 19 December 2018 (has links)
This thesis evaluates various techniques for intra-set clustering of social media data from an industry perspective. The research goal was to establish methods for reducing the amount of redundant information an end user must review from a standard social media search. The research evaluated both clustering algorithms and string similarity measures for their effectiveness in clustering a selection of real-world topic and location-based social media searches. In addition, the algorithms and similarity measures were tested in scenarios based on industry constraints such as rate limits. The results were evaluated using several practical measures to determine which techniques were effective. / Graduate

[en] TWITTER AND PUBLIC SPHERE: PLURALITY AND REPRESENTATION IN THE DISCUSSION OF THE BRAZILIAN CIVIL RIGHTS FRAMEWORK FOR THE INTERNET / [pt] TWITTER E ESFERA PÚBLICA: PLURALIDADE E REPRESENTAÇÃO NA DISCUSSÃO SOBRE O MARCO CIVIL DA INTERNET

LETICIA VARELA CAPONE 15 June 2016 (has links)
[en] This is a research in the field of Internet and Democracy that dialogues with the studies that analyze Web contributions to the public sphere of contemporary democratic regimes (GOMES; MAIA, 2008; DAHLGREN, 2005; BOHMAN, 2004; CHADWICK, 2009). The intention was to analyze the discussion on Twitter about the Brazilian Civil Rights Framework for the Internet, in order to observe which were the major controversies, how plural was the debate and what kind of media (mainstream or complementary media) was present in the specified space. Based on qualitative and quantitative analysis of the object, 636 tweets, we found a prevalence of expert voices, as well as a large share of content produced by complementary media.

What Counts as Successful Online Activism: The Case of # MyNYPD

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation discusses how Twitter may function not only as a tool for planning public protest, but also as a discursive site, albeit a virtual one, for staging protest itself. Much debate exists on the value and extent that Twitter (and other social media or social networking sites) can contribute to successful activism for social justice. Previously, scholars' assessments of online activism have tended to turn on a simple binary: either the activity enjoyed complete success for a social movement (for instance, during the Arab Spring an overthrow of a regime) or else the campaign was designated as a failure. In my dissertation, I examine a Twitter public-relations campaign organized by the New York Police Department using the hashtag #MyNYPD. The campaign asked citizens to tweet pictures of themselves with police officers, and the public did, just not in the way the police department envisioned. Instead of positive photos with the police, the public organized online to share pictures of police brutality and harassment. I collected six months of tweets using #MyNYPD, and then analyzed protestors' rhetorical work through three lenses: rhetorical analysis, analysis of literacy practices, and social network analysis. These analyses show, first, the complex rhetorical work required to appropriate the police department's public-service campaign for purposes that subverted its original intent; second, the wide range of literacy practices required to mobilize and to sustain public attention on data exposing police abuse; and third, the networked activity constituting the protest online. Together, these analyses show the important work achieved within this social justice campaign beyond the binary definition of successful activism. This project shows that by increasing our analytical repertoires for studying digital rhetoric and writing, scholars can more accurately acknowledge what it takes for participants to share experiential knowledge, to construct new knowledge, and to mobilize connections when engaging online in public protest. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation English 2016

Secure and Privacy-Preserving Microblogging Services: Attacks and Defenses

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Microblogging services such as Twitter, Sina Weibo, and Tumblr have been emerging and deeply embedded into people's daily lives. Used by hundreds of millions of users to connect the people worldwide and share and access information in real-time, the microblogging service has also became the target of malicious attackers due to its massive user engagement and structural openness. Although existed, little is still known in the community about new types of vulnerabilities in current microblogging services which could be leveraged by the intelligence-evolving attackers, and more importantly, the corresponding defenses that could prevent both the users and the microblogging service providers from being attacked. This dissertation aims to uncover a number of challenging security and privacy issues in microblogging services and also propose corresponding defenses. This dissertation makes fivefold contributions. The first part presents the social botnet, a group of collaborative social bots under the control of a single botmaster, demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of exploiting a social botnet for spam distribution and digital-influence manipulation, and propose the corresponding countermeasures and evaluate their effectiveness. Inspired by Pagerank, the second part describes TrueTop, the first sybil-resilient system to find the top-K influential users in microblogging services with very accurate results and strong resilience to sybil attacks. TrueTop has been implemented to handle millions of nodes and 100 times more edges on commodity computers. The third and fourth part demonstrate that microblogging systems' structural openness and users' carelessness could disclose the later's sensitive information such as home city and age. LocInfer, a novel and lightweight system, is presented to uncover the majority of the users in any metropolitan area; the dissertation also proposes MAIF, a novel machine learning framework that leverages public content and interaction information in microblogging services to infer users' hidden ages. Finally, the dissertation proposes the first privacy-preserving social media publishing framework to let the microblogging service providers publish their data to any third-party without disclosing users' privacy and meanwhile meeting the data's commercial utilities. This dissertation sheds the light on the state-of-the-art security and privacy issues in the microblogging services. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 2016

A Critical Discourse Analysis of Twitter Posts on The Perspectives of Women Driving in Saudi Arabia

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: The issue of women driving remains to be highly debated in Saudi Arabia. Recent developments on its legalization have sparked conversation and discourse, particularly in social media sites like Twitter. Several hashtags have been used to indicate either support or criticism towards the movement. Examining Twitter tweets and hashtags, the study explored how the discourse on women driving had been executed, particularly in between genders. The study analyzed a sizeable number of tweets as well as their context via linguistic corpora analysis. Following Norman Fairclough’s framework, the two opposing perspectives were investigated both at a level of textual analysis. The selected tweets were representative of the three hashtags that emerged on the heat of the discourse regarding the issue of women driving in Saudi Arabia: #Women_car_driving, #I_will_drive_my_car_June15, and #I_will_enter_my_kitchen_June15. The results showed, among others, that tweets with the hashtag #Women_car_driving presented a tremendous support towards the movement. On the other hand strong opposing reactions emerged from the hashtags #I_will_drive_my_car_June15 and #I_will_enter_my_kitchen_June15. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Linguistics and Applied Linguistics 2017

Elving, Erik January 2018 (has links)
