Pause — Stress Management

Stress affects us all more or less, but over the last decade people who suffer from severe stress and its symptomshas increased considerably. Women are especially affected, with absence from Swedish workplaces due tostress growing 370% between 2011—2019. As of 2020, stress is treated when we experience symptoms suchas anxiety, panic attacks or insomnia, but it is more sustainable to prevent stress than treating it in terms ofmoney, time, health and effort.Through collaboration with people affected by stress, psychiatrists & researchers specialized on stress, anddesigners from different disciplines, the topic of stress was explored and researched to create a conceptualsolution that could be able to help users manage their stress better.“Pause” is the result of this work. It is a conceptual product ecosystem consisiting of an application andwatch that facilitates monitoring and management of stress in day-to-day scenarios, in order to prevent andreduce stress.

Neutron Spectrometry Using Activation Detectors : Utilizing Measurements of Induced Radioactivity in Elements for Neutron Spectrum Unfolding

The neutron plays a central role in numerous fields of physics, a fact that entails a need for methods of measuring neutron energy spectra. In this project, a technique for neutron spectrometry through measurements of neutron-induced radioactivity in activation detectors was developed and tested. The developed technique involves irradiating element samples with neutrons, measuring activation products with a gamma spectrometer, and then performing a neutron spectrum unfolding procedure. The elements indium, iron, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, titanium, and copper were used as activation detectors and irradiated with neutrons from an americium-beryllium (AmBe) neutron source. Subsequent gamma spectrometry was performed with the UGGLA high-purity germanium detector setup at Uppsala University. The GRAVEL unfolding algorithm was implemented in MATLAB and used to unfold neutron spectra based on an initial spectrum guess. The unfolded neutron spectrum agrees well with the expected AmBe spectrum, though some difference between the spectra is attributed to neutron scattering in the irradiation environment. A possible ability to find approximate neutron spectra from inaccurate initial guesses is found, but additional work is needed to understand better how the initial guess affects the result for different neutron sources. Because activation detectors do not require electrical power when measuring neutrons, can be made sensitive to a wide range of neutron energies, and do not detect other types of radiation, future applications could find the developed neutron spectrometry method practical.

Lappugglans utbredning i Sverige och skogsbrukets betydelse / Great grey owl distribution in Sweden in relation to forestry

Lappugglans utbredningsområde kan vara påväg att förändras som respons till det moderna skogsbruket. I den här studien har jag fokuserat på lappugglors abundans vid kalhyggen av olika storlek med hypotesen att de föredrar hyggen av mindre storlek. Eftersom kalhyggena i södra Sverige i snitt är mindre så skulle det kunna vara en del i förklaringen att lappugglor börjat synas allt oftare söderut. Data laddades ned från artdatabanken och skogsstyrelsen och bearbetades i QGiS för att undersöka lappugglornas utbredning i relation till kalhyggen. Resultatet indikerar att ugglorna föredrar små framför stora kalhyggen och även kan dras till små hyggen. Resultaten visar också en trend söderut för ugglornas utbrednings mellan 2005 och 2020. Dessa resultat bekräftar att lappugglornas utbredningsmönster rör sig söderut och stödjer hypotesen att det är skogsbruk och kalhyggens storlek som driver denna utveckling. Mindre kalhyggen gynnar även andra arter än Lappugglor och kan därför generellt vara en god idé för att förena ekologi och ekonomi inom modernt skogsbruk. / The great grey owl may be adjusting its distribution area in Sweden in response to altered forestry practices. Here i focused on the abundance of owls in clear cut areas of different sizes with the hypothesis that owls prefer smaller clear cut areas. As clear cut areas are smaller in the south than in the north, such a preference could explain a trend of changing distribution southward. Data from artdatabanken and skogsstyrelsen were processed and analyzed in QGiS to investigate the spatial pattern of owl reports in relation to the locations of clear cuts. The results indicate that the owls prefer small over large clear cuts, and are indeed attracted to small clear cuts. The results also show a southward change in the distribution area from 2005 to 2020. These results confirm that the distribution of great grey owls moves southwards in Sweden and support the idea that this trend may be driven by the species being attracted to smaller clear cuts. Since smaller clear cuts benefit more species than owls it is generally a good idea to combine economy with ecology in modern forestry.
