Mobile technologies and public spaces

Mani, Sanaz 05 1900 (has links)
Mobile technologies are the latest technologies in the realm of communication media. They have the potential to flatten the world by making it a place where gender, age, class, race and nationality can no longer hold us back from being heard and being informed. We have learned that these technologies can help to liberate and empower us, and they can lead to a collective cognition as much as they can distract us from what we need to know about the world we live in. In Greece thousands of years ago, a selected number of Greeks had a public space called the Agora to discuss the issues that concerned the public, meaning each and every citizen. They were the first to be able to create the space and place were the word “democracy” could be brought into language; the very word that was used to start a new war in the era of a communication revolution in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. There are still issues that concern the public today such as wars, global warming, homelessness or human rights which are all matters of our collective cognition. However, today in an age of information revolution the public life of people and their collective cognition is being exercised mostly in the virtual spaces of the Internet. Simultaneously, some physical spaces are being abandoned by people. This thesis investigates the possibility of having physical public spaces that are enriched with communication media and not weakened by it. If architects rethink their designs based on a new understanding of the networked society it might be possible to turn this “networked individualism” into a networked collectivism. However, most designed public spaces fail to offer new possibilities that can transform space for the new generation of users. Here, the aim is to understand a new generation of users. Who have they become as a result of new communication media? And how can architects design in a way that responds to this new subject in architecture? / Applied Science, Faculty of / Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of / Graduate

Mentalités et représentations de Barcelone à l’époque moderne : iconographie d’un espace urbain / Mentalities and representations of Barcelona in the modern era : iconography of an urban space

Karo, Sophie 13 November 2010 (has links)
The streets and squares of Barcelona in the early modern era - period rather little explored in the history of the Mediterranean big city – have reflected the consequences of a series of often tragic events such as the War of Segadors or the revolts of 1714. This study has chosen to give the preference to the iconography as original support to evoke the everyday life. The documents presented here, proceeding from the city archives add up to studies relative to demographic evolution, immigration, civil and religious celebrations, life of the congregations and the corporations, the role of women or the historical great events which marked the history of the city. It is shown how, throughout one period more chaotic than “stagnant”, the city asserted its different identity.

De nouvelles articulations entre les politiques publiques et les pratiques sportives auto-organisées : l'exemple des sept communes de Yaoundé (Cameroun) / New articulations between public policy and self-organized sporting practices : the example of the seven cities of Yaounde ( Cameroon )

Mbida Nana, Frank Mickaël 09 February 2016 (has links)
Numerous sociological works analyzed the processes of development of the auto-organized practices. In France, they showed in particular the role structuring public actors who accompanied, in particular by their policies of equipment and arrangement of sports spaces, the birth then the development of these little institutionalized sports activities. The analysis compared by seven municipalities of Yaoundé (capital of Cameroon) shows that this articulation between the sports politics and the auto-organized practices could build itself differently in developing countries. The theoretical frame, structured around the concepts “of public action” and “of social innovation ”, centered the analysis on two hypotheses. The first one envisages the low influence of publics politics on the urban spaces dedicated to the sports practice of closeness. The second sends back to the capacity of the followers auto-organized to invent original modalities of access to the sports spaces. In the empirical plan, three techniques of collection of materials were organized : the documentary analysis to dread the place of the sports spaces to Yaoundé, the not participating observation (a “urban circuit” produced an unpublished inventory to the places of practices) and the semi-directive conversations to analyze the mechanims of appropriation of the sports spaces. The analysis of the empirical materials shows that the sports space of Yaoundé is more structured by an innovative articulation, based on processes of negociation and/or rent, between intermediate actors (property owners or leaders of districts) and the auto-organized followers, rather than by public authorities which favor the sport of top-level.

Light, visibility and perceived safety: a case study on how light levels and light distribution are related to women’s perceived safety in  the urban environment  of Stockholm city

Loureiro Cardoso, Victória January 2021 (has links)
This thesis investigates the relationship between light, visibility and women’s perceived safety through a case study. Specifically, it investigates visibility related to light levels and light distribution at four bus stops in urban areas of Stockholm, Sweden. The methodology is divided into Literature review and Case study. The first provides an overview on theories related to visibility, light and perceived safety in the urban environment.  Then, the Case study presents an investigation through Qualitative and Quantitative research. The Qualitative research is divided into three steps: (1) firstly, four bus stops are selected in urban areas through the Light Zones concept tool [12] and analyzed by the author through the V/P Theory [11]; (2) then, the relationship between light, visibility and women’s safety perception is evaluated through an online form; (3) and finally, this relationship is further investigated during on-site interviews in order to explore how light distribution affect women’s perception. During the Quantitative research, Luminance and Illuminance measurements are developed in order to assess light levels and light distribution at the area of the four bus stops. From the results of all methodology steps, the relationship between light, visibility and women’s perceived safety was discussed and three main factors were assessed to be important to women’s perceived safety at bus stop areas. The first factor is connected to light distribution, and this thesis understood that women’s perceived safety is connected to light on their immediate surroundings, rather than on further distances. The second factor is connected to light levels, and it was concluded that higher light levels on immediate surroundings increase visibility thus, increasing safety perception. The third factor is connected to the experienced light, in which this thesis recognized that previous experiences and contexts related to light influence how women perceive safety in urban spaces.

Bydlení na starém Brně - architektonicko urbanistická studie / Living in Old Brno - architecture and urban study

Krempaský, Tomáš January 2014 (has links)
The topic of my thesis is living in the old Brno in the cadastral area of Old Brno . Currently selected area on the map of brownfiedlu of Brno and the question of his fate has become a hot topic. For the design of a successful revitalization area is necessary to think not only the local context , but also over the issue of sustainable development across the board , in the context of the current situation in the company and its vision of the future . Therefore, in my thesis I try to answer the upcoming questions . 1 / What today is sustainability ? 2 / As , influenced by the ideas of sustainability , access to urban planning ? 3 / Which new role and function should be proposed territory ? 4 / As a suggestion area involved in the existing urban structure ? 5 / How to turn onset territory in a sustainable , vibrant and healthy urban structure ? In spatial planning , I emphasized in terms of sustainable development into two functions . On the one hand, promote the development and direction needed to remove the obstacles . On the other hand, to protect the natural and cultural values of the area , which are irreplaceable and non-renewable . Both tasks I tried to balance because of slipping into one extreme, could block the necessary economic and social development or, conversely, to promote development without hindrance , while I was forced to sacrifice irreplaceable natural and cultural assets . There are more models of sustainable urban forms , but some feature are common . I decided in its proposal to create a compact urban structure with multiple functions and interconnection network of streets with the support of the public transport system , quality control environment and a high level of local government and the incorporation of green with the use of passive solar gains .

Transformation Of The Arcades In Beyoglu

Ozkan, Miray 01 June 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is the study of the 19th century arcades in Beyoglu. The aim is to explore the interrelation between the arcades of Beyoglu and their surrounding urban structure in both of their formation and transformation processes, and to find out the possible contributions of arcades to the transformation and recentralization process of &amp / #272 / stanbul. The individual stories of the arcades as well as the socio-economic and political conditions are studied to find out the formation and transformation processes. Therefore the study is constructed by historical and spatial analysis. The history of arcades gives important clues about the development and transformation processes of the cities. Apart from the changes in surrounding urban structure and functioning, individual attempts in existing socio-economic environment determines the transformation. Therefore, changes in ownership along with changes in building have been taken as the basis for the study. At the end of the study, possible contributions of arcades to the urban space, derived from the tendencies and spatial opportunities were discussed and the role of arcade in redeveloping the central areas was pointed out. And this thesis showed that arcades may be the alternative to the peripheral shopping centers with their spatial possibilities and social facilities.

Improvement Of Ataturk Street In Antalya As A Problem Of Spatial Continuity

Saydam, Oya 01 January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT IMPROVEMENT OF ATAT&Uuml / RK STREET IN ANTALYA AS A PROBLEM OF SPATIAL CONTINUITY SAYDAM, Oya M.Arch., Department of Architecture Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Vacit MAMOGLU January 2006, 162 pages The city is a fundamental and universal human creation. It is a unique centre for social life as well as individual and collective fulfillment. However, cities have been shaped and reshaped by mere functionalistic, stylistic and materialistic aspects rather than developmental ones that incorporate social, cultural and environmental variables. The frantic, irreversible urban growth that societies throughout the world have experienced over the past few decades has caused a transformation of urban spaces and agglomerations, which rarely corresponds to expectations, and aspirations. Especially public spaces have played a key role within this transformation of the cities. In this context, conserving local public places, as a reminder of the past and an echo of the spirit of culture, is a matter of a great concern to reinstating identity and character. The thesis supports this argument by the case study of Atat&uuml / rk Street in Antalya, which suffers from disintegration and confusion because of haphazard growth, dense building, visual pollution, and degradation of the physical environment qualities. The thesis provides a detailed account of the project from initiation through problem identification, development of conceptual framework, and finally planning and architectural proposal. The case study highlights the need for a sensitive developmental approach, which harmonises the interactions between pedestrians, traffic and street furniture as well as cultural, physical environment and technical considerations. Within the scope of these criteria, the main objective of this thesis is to bring forth a project for designing new urban design components in historic context through the interpretation of objects of historical heritage and the existing qualities. Considering the critical problems affecting physical environment and causing imbalance in the lives of inhabitants in the city of Antalya, a project proposal is presented. The project has been prepared to provide solutions with simple and easy implementation, providing better harmony between man and his environment.
