Light touches : cultural practices of illumination, London 1780-1840

Barnaby, Alice January 2009 (has links)
In the last decades of the eighteenth century, urban lives were touched by a series of innovations in the technology and aesthetics of illumination. Unfamiliar combinations of new fuel sources and auxiliary equipment (for example, curtains, blinds, glass, mirrors and lampshades) meant that cities looked and felt different during both the day and the night. The spheres of elite, popular, public and private culture explored, exploited and were fascinated by the cultural value of light. Through four case studies in the aesthetics of urban illumination, my thesis demonstrates how the acquisition of skills for the manipulation of transparent and reflective surfaces were crucial when negotiating a balance between self-expression and standards of taste, morality, gender and class. Rather than relying upon canonical examples of the period’s fascination with light, such as the high Romantic idealization of nature’s sunrises and sunsets, my thesis investigates more everyday encounters with light in the built environment: the fashionably genteel pastime of transparent painting; the gendering of light to design both domestic interiors and female identity; the appropriation of patrician top-lighting for public buildings of education and exhibition; and the popularity of illuminated spectacles in commercial pleasure gardens. I argue that these new possibilities of lighting temporarily enabled new possibilities of subjectivity. My historical phenomenology suggests that the formation of perception between 1780 and 1840 was actively directed towards changes in the world through a finely-attuned consciousness of light.

De Lourenço Marques à Maputo : genèse et formation d'une ville / From Lourenço Marques to Maputo : genesis and shaping of a town

Vales, Teodoro Cândido 17 June 2014 (has links)
This thesis is based on a historical approach. It addresses the process whereby the capital city of Mozambique was shaped and transformed, and analyses the links that appeared during the 19th and 20th centuries between economic change, institutional transformations and the evolution of urban morphology. The location of Lourenço Marques is peripheral in Mozambique. The city is close to the Union of South Africa, and was originally a trading outpost. It later became a feitoria, small town, then a coastal city. The creation of road and, later, of rail networks with the Transvaal in the 19th century meant that Lourenço Marques became the maritime gateway for South African mining products, which explains the city's economic development. During the period in which the city was shaped, its extensions were managed through plans drawn up by engineers and army officials, and, later, by architects who came from Lisbon. It is at this point in time that the city became the capital of the Province of Mozambique. Like many other colonial cities, Lourenço Marques was subject to a wide range of planning experiments (street patterns, subdivisions, zoning) designed in various European countries, including Portugal. During the entire colonial period, Portuguese engineers and architects somehow managed to contain the growth of this European town, by restricting African people's access to it. The fact that a quarter was created near the city centre for the “indigenous population” reflects the fact that colonizers wanted racial separation. When Mozambique became independent in 1975, the Portuguese exodus took place and the city was opened up to African people. This sudden decision generated mass immigration from the countryside and initiated the rapid demographic growth of Lourenço Marques, whose name then became Maputo. The authorities of Mozambique came up with many town planning documents (which were never approved), and found it increasingly difficult to manage the development process – many informal quarters appeared (subdivisions and shanty towns) – and to generate economic activities that would give permanent jobs to the new population.

Almeida, Ana Flávia Alves de Oliveira 17 June 2016 (has links)
Brazilian urbanization, due to late industrialization, was defined by capital dominance and its impact on the working class, restraining it from being a part of urban land, resulting in the social-spatial segregation still seen nowadays. The difficulties in access to the city, especially the rights to housing and its dilemmas related to a social-spatial segregation caused by the state‘s inefficiency in taking action, regarding the theme, are discussed in this study. The general objective was to theoretically analyze 'the right to the city' in Brazil in relation to the right to housing and its social function. In a specific way, it aimed to reflect on the process of commercialization of urban spaces and how it interferes with the right to housing in Brazil; it also evaluates Brazilian housing legislation regarding the principles of the social function of ownership and identify which are the State‘s actions referring to the right of housing and urban land after the publication of law 10.257/2001. Methodologically the qualitative approach of exploratory nature was used, gathering a biographic (various publications) and documental (decrees, laws and governmental programs available online) research. The data was collected through marking and analyzing the researched material using the content analysis technique. The referential adopted in this research is dialectical and historical materialism, mediating quantitative and qualitative data. As main conclusions of the study, the results show a confirmation of the listed hypotheses proving that the process of urbanization performed by Brazilian governments strengthen the cutting capitalist real estate, which keeps discarding the most impoverished out of the right to housing and reproducing the historical social-spatial segregation in Brazil. Another important result is that even after the City‘s Statute approval, which promotes an enlargement of a legal framework in relation to a city‘s social function and property, it is noticeable that the housing policies developed by the state are not being granted or respected. Its actions are, essentially, geared towards financing the housing policies which attend the market and not specifically the social needs of who has an income of up to 3 minimum wages, where the majority of Brazilian housing shortage is concentrated.

Migration, réseaux transnationaux et identités locales : le cas des Colombiens à New York / Migration, transnational networks and local identities : the case of Colombians in New York

Magnan Penuela, Marion 08 December 2009 (has links)
Based on the ethnography of the mobility of middle-class Colombian workers of urban origin, this research explores the spatial, social and solidarity reconstructions, amidst a globalization process which advocates for flexibility while restricting the mobility of certain individuals. Colombians belong to an undesirable group when it comes to international mobility and they go through certain forms of bypassing and citizenship denial; however they are well positioned when it comes to the social standing of migrants in the United States, finding ways to recreate positive identities. This approach contributes to the studies about Latinos in the United States, not only placing Colombians within this group, currently invisible in spite of their growing number, but also placing them in the debate of the roll of social networks in mobilities. These migrants only use the national origin networks as an aid among others and distrust plays a recurrent roll in the connections they develop. The multi city approach, including the country of origin, has allowed a better interpretation of the strategies of persons who grow in a unique social field. This study brings back the question of hierarchy and of the roll of women in transnational relationships. Finally, this study questions the function of the global city and of non segregated multi-ethnical neighbourhoods concerning the reception of migrants. In fact, far from the schemes of isolated ethnic neighbourhoods, Colombians have built different «Colombian spaces», Jackson Heights in Queens being an essential knot giving them access to a social capital, not only at a «Great New York» level, but also to certain transnational networks.

Restauration du bazar de Hamadan (Iran). / Restoration of Hamadan's Bazar (Iran)

Piri, Saeid 16 December 2013 (has links)
Many big cities in Iran, have thousands years background and yet some parts of ancientsites and monuments that several centuries old are existing. Many of this textures andmonuments because of using vulnerable materials like brick and mud brick and also land usechanges in urban area are being changed and destroyed. Bazaar has been the most importantconnection way and Iranian urban spaces. According to the existing document, you can guessthat historical background of Bazars is related to thousand years B.C. until the first period ofcurrent century, Bazaars in each city had an organic and strong relation with other urbanspaces. But from the beginning of current age, after urban development and constructing ofroads and streets and establishing new methods of residency and urbanism, their relation withanother urban spaces has disjoined.

Ródenas Cañada, José María 05 May 2022 (has links)
[EN] The subject of this thesis is the urban square in the context of the historic city, understood as an urban space historically configured and socially accepted as such. The study focuses on the square as a structuring element of the city, related to its constitution, origin and organizing principles. The planning interventions on the historic city are analyzed trying to discover criteria of intervention in the urban heritage applicable to the exercise and professional practice, with a focus on the administrative limits of the Community of Murcia. The practice of urban planning is considered within the framework of this study as an activity in need of performance criteria outside the legal and regulatory determinations of mandatory compliance. It is not about using pre-made formulas, but about finding principles and foundations for a responsible urban practice. This thesis also wants to serve to spread the values of artistic heritage, mistreated many times by uncontrolled actions of the government administration, which is responsible for launching recovery programs for public spaces as significant pieces of the historic city, while promoting a "spatial culture" that contributes to aesthetically enriching our urban environment. / Ródenas Cañada, JM. Mercado de abastos y gastronómico en el Centro Histórico del Rímac / Food and gastronomic market in the Historic Centre of Rímac

Silva Meneses, Pilar Fiorella 15 April 2021 (has links)
In the course of time the food markets have remained unchanged to the transformation and evolution of their environment. The new consumption models and the new user needs define the stagnation and degradation of the markets that leads to an architectural decline of the typology. This thesis project is based on the premise of not only valuing the market typology, in terms of transformation and adaptation to new uses and the current new user needs, but also to improve its character of public space as open infrastructure to the city and the importance of incorporating the food markets into the contemporary urban dynamics of urban centers, in this case the Historic Centre of Rímac. In that sense, an intervention that includes the restructuring and recomposition of an existing market is needed, Mercado La Chira, located in a degraded and fragmented area of the Historic Centre of Rímac, which despite of this reality has a variety of commercial, cultural and social dynamics in the streets. For this reason, the new market called Mercado Quinta de Presa (due to its proximity to Quinta de Presa) is projected as a new market model and a permeable space that dialogues with its surroundings through commercial, social, cultural and gastronomic activities. The market objective is focused on recovering and strengthening the market-city relationship, in this way, the typology evolves towards a more responsible and humane architecture. / Tesis
