An Explanation of John Rawls's Theory of Justice with a Defense of the Veil of Ignorance

Miele, Alex 01 January 2017 (has links)
John Rawls was a political philosopher who proposed a theory centered around the idea of justice as fairness. His primary concern was social justice, so more specifically, he proposed a basic structure for society that ensures major social institutions like the government fairly distribute fundamental rights and duties and optimally divide advantages brought about by social cooperation. His theory is based on the idea that the correct principles to use for the basic structure of society are those that free and rational people would agree to in attempt to advance their own self-interest from a fair and equal starting position. Rawls proposes three principles that he believes people would agree to in this situation and describes what a society based on these principles would look like. Throughout this paper, I will attempt to explain Rawls’s “Theory of Justice” and defend various aspect of the theory against common objections.

A Narrative Study about the Transformative Visual Cultural Dialogue beyond Women's Veils

Aljebreen, Fahad Mohammad 08 1900 (has links)
In this narrative study, I explore the transformative visual cultural dialogue behind the sight of the veil or veiled women in Denton, Texas as a Western culture. The narrative is constructed from the experiences of three Western non-Muslim women participants who wore the veil publicly in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, especially Denton, Texas, for about two weeks, in the spring of 2014. The main question for this study is: How do veiled Western women incite transformative visual cultural dialogue and ideas concerning veiled women? To gather rich data to answer the study's question, I utilized qualitative narrative inquiry to explore the transformative dialogue that the veil, as a visual culture object, can incite in non-Muslim Western women's narratives. The study involves three participants who are non-Muslim American women who voluntarily wore the veil in public and recorded their own and other's reactions. The participants' interviews and diaries demonstrated that the veil incited a particular perceptive dialogue and often transferred negative meanings. For example, the sight of the veil suggested the notion of being Muslim, and consequently, the ideas of not belonging. The reactions the participants received were either negative verbal interactions or physical ones, both of which are limited in this study to face gestures or some form of negative body language that is meant to be a message of disliking. In summation, this study shows that the women's veil is a visual culture symbol that transfers negative meaning in the DFW area in Texas.

Lifting the Veils in William Somerset Maugham's The Painted Veil

Sjöberg, Viktoria January 2008 (has links)

Novels with love as a theme often deal with a passionate or forbidden love. In 1925 William Somerset Maugham wrote a different version of the typical love story we have read so many times. It tells a story about a married couple who never really shares the same love for each other. Maugham mentions that he was inspired by Dante when he wrote The Painted Veil. Indeed, he uses different sources of inspirations, such as poems from Shelley and Goldsmith. The aim of this essay is to investigate what these intertextual references bring to the novel and what their functions are. The method I use is looking at the different references used by Maugham and stating their purpose and significance to the novel. The result of my investigation illustrates how the use of Shelley’s theme of veiling signifies hiding, as well as not wanting to see the truth, while Goldsmith’s poem shows the true relationship between the married couple and how corrupted society is. Maugham also lets Dante’s Purgatorio demonstrate how Kitty, the wife, gets the chance to change her life for the better.

(Av)slöjad : En argumentationsanalys av debatten kring ett eventuellt svenskt lagförbud mot heltäckande slöja / (Re) Veil : An argument analysis of the debate surrounding a possible Swedish law aganist the veil

Bergman, Evelina January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to examine and to analyze the arguments about a possible Swedish law against the veil. I have therefore highlighted how notions about the veil creates and reproduces power-structures and meaning-systems. I structured the arguments in a pro et contra schedule and then analyzed them by using a theoretical framework consisting post-colonial feminism, orientalism, multi-culture and intersectionality together with research produced by Joan Wallach Scott (2010), Pia Karlsson Minganti (2007) and Anne Sofie Roald (2003). The results of the study shows that the people who either argue for or against a veil-law agree that the veil is an oppression of women and that it must be resisted. To be objective in the discussion of the veil seems to be impossible and the women it affects deprived voice. A piece of cloth has never been as controversial as the veil and the question is whether it is possible to reach consensus on its symbolism, the arguments that I analyzed contradicts it.

Ansvarsgenombrott : Särskilt om "processbolag" / Piercing of the corporate veil : -Especially regarding "litigation corporations"

Lövrup, Sten January 2011 (has links)
Denna huvudregel stipuleras i aktiebolagslagens 3 kap 1 §.

Decision under Complete Uncertainty: Bridging Economic and Philosophical Research

Phang, Kevin 22 August 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores the topic of decision under conditions of complete uncertainty, advocating an interdisciplinary perspective that benefits from the insights of both economists and philosophers. Thus far, most of the results in the field have been the work of economists who have been responsible for important theorems and axiomatic characterizatoins of a variety of decision rules. While proceeding from a different methodology and focus, tantalizingly similar conjectures have been made by philosophical logicians. While the work of the latter has not (yet) become as advanced in deriving important theorems, I suggest that philosophers have something useful to offer in their method of analysis that would be useful in evaluating the different solutions to standard problems in the field. I attempt to provide a new solution motivated by both disciplines.

"Am I Bothered by Your View of Me?" : A Look at Racism's Effect on Slaves in the Novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family by Alex Haley

Kiswani, Mohamad January 2014 (has links)
Denna uppsats är en litteraturstudie av Roots: The Saga of an American Family.

EFFECTS OF FIBERGLASS ON RESIDUAL STRENGTH AND DAMAGE MITIGATION IN UNIDIRECTIONAL CARBON FIBER LAMINATE COMPOSITES

Burgelin, John Patrick 01 January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects, if any, of including varying amounts of fiberglass in Unidirectional Carbon Fiber Laminates. The focus was on strength, weight, and damage. A solution to the entrapment of air in thick unidirectional carbon fiber laminates under vacuum pressure was expected from this study. This study presents background, introduction, data, and results pertaining to the subject. Care was made to fully explain all procedures and terminology for complete comprehension of the subject matter. This study used Design of Experiments to formulate an adequate test population, and it used multiple specimens per Case to formulate an accurate representation of the results. This study used empirical results calculated from Compression After Impact data gathered on a Instron model 5585H at NRRI with a CAI frame, and a load cell capable of 56,250lbs, using Bluehill software for data collection, as well as results determined from nondestructive inspection using a PE + Pulse Echo ultrasonic machine, specifically a Flawinspecta from Diagnostic Sonar LTD with 128 element 67mm array and Flawinspecta version 1.3.6 software. A focus of this research was to create a method to manufacture thick unidirectional carbon fiber laminates solely under vacuum pressure. Currently the only way to manufacture suitable thick unidirectional laminates is through use of an autoclave; otherwise an abundance of entrapped air structurally weakens the part and will result in an inadequate specimen. This entrapped air not only weakens the piece by interrupting the stress handling characteristics of the fiber-matrix structure, but makes it near impossible to use ultrasound as a nondestructive inspection option to check for inconsistencies in the material. The second focus of the research was to understand the effects, if any of including fiberglass within a carbon composite panel. Both dry fiberglass veil and pre-preg fiberglass fabric were included in various samples to view any effects on strength, and damage tolerance. The samples were compared on thickness or bulk, weight, residual strength, and damage mitigation. ”Nu är det mullornas tur att darra” : kampanjen #WhiteWednesdays som medialiserad subaltern counterpublic

Hed, Isabelle January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to study Iranian women's struggle against the mandatory veil, based on Nancy Fraser's (1990) theory on subaltern counterpublics and Mia Lövheim's (2012) use of Stig Hjarvard’s theory on mediatization of religion. Specifically, how the Iranian-exile Masih Alinejad's Twitter can be seen as an alternative sphere in which she creates a mediatized subaltern counterpublic for marginalized women. The research questions are as follows:(1) How is Iran and the compulsory hijab portrayed in the selected material? (2) Can this portrayal be seen as a mediatized subaltern counterpublic? The material consists of 100 tweets from the campaign #WhiteWednesdays. By using a qualitative method with an abductive approach, I found four themes in the material. Research question (1) showed that Iran is portrayed as a stratified society where men are superior to women and that the public sphere constitutes problems regarding women's rights. The mandatory veil is presented as the most visible symbol of gender apartheid and religious dictatorship. Research question (2)showed that, based on subaltern counterpublics and mediatization, societies (especially with religious authority) exclude women from speaking in authorized discourse, which contributes to a search for alternative spheres. The study’s chosen theories proved to be a good fit for capturing, describing and explaining how Alinejad creates a mediatized subaltern counterpublic - via new digital media - for marginalized women whom have been excluded from the authorized and official capacity of the country. The results further showed how Alinejad participated in the mediated public sphere as an independent agent who engaged in religious issues from a position of authority. She continues to use the #WhiteWednesdays campaign as a space to perform activism against the regime's veil policy.
