New media English literature : a product re-launch

James, Ryan 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the recent past, the large-scale production and marketing of e-reading devices, such as Amazon’s Kindle, and tablet computers, such as Apple’s iPad, have allowed literary works to be presented in a digital reading space, both in the form of standard e-books and, more recently, as enhanced or “amplified” e-books. Much of the position-taking on the matter is polarised: technologists continue to imagine the myriad possibilities of multimodal online “stories”, focusing on opportunities for interactive engagement, while the guardians of literary tradition fear the digital reading space might well cause fluency disruptions and break the hermeneutic immersion necessary for strong reading, irrevocably altering a traditional, paper-based reading experience known to promote a state of deep attention and imaginatively engaged reading. This thesis looks realistically at the current literary climate in which the so-called “digital native” operates, scrutinises the “print” versus “electronic” debate, paying careful attention to how an online environment may well prevent hermeneutic immersion, and then discusses recent enhanced literary products, such as the transmedia fiction title, Chopsticks (Penguin Group USA 2012), and the nonfiction titles released by online publisher Atavist. Then, in an attempt to bridge the gap between the technologists and the print-book purists, and based on what might be considered to be literature’s original value, the thesis proposes a digital reading product in which a formalised set of conventions and a strategic instructional design, or interface, attempts to protect the qualities of traditional, paper-based reading, while at the same time taking advantage of on-screen, online environments to reconnect digital natives with the relevance of past literatures. More specifically, the product presented herein is an attempt to demonstrate 1) how a new aesthetic of literary presentation might stimulate renewed interest in the humanities and liberal arts; 2) how fiction might be reinstated as one of the central components in the education process; 3) how works of fiction that have become increasingly obscure over time or inaccessible to young people might be re-energised; and 4) how what one might call “local” literatures might be “de-parochialised” within an increasingly globalised reading environment.

A recolha de dados envolveu a an?lise documental, predominantemente. / In this study, we analyzed the debate Evolution versus Inteligente Design by the point of view of Ludwik Fleck?s (1896-1961) epistemology, especially as regards the categories thought style and thought collective, esoteric and exoteric circles, intercollective communication and deviations of meaning. The analysis from this framework aims to contribute to the teaching of biological evolution - marked by tensions, disputes and conflicting points of view, during science and biology classes - considering the "understanding" as the ultimate goal of the teaching of evolution. Mainly, data collection involved the analysis of documents. The methodology of Discursive Textual Analysis (DTA) based the analysis from two perspectives: the synchronic one, which was performed by means of documents produced by individuals and/or groups linked to the evolution versus intelligent design debate, and the diachronic one, which considered the development of specific aspects of thinking of these groups over time. Our results characterize the groups involved in the evolution versus intelligent design debate as having own thought styles, constituting distinct thought collectives. Although the thought style of biological evolution (EVO-TS) and intelligent design thought style (ID-TS) have some overlap in their subjects, adopt methods, explanations, different judgments and language to address them. Similarly, the thought collective about biological evolution (EVO-TC) and the thought collective about intelligent design (ID-TC) differ in the configuration of their esoteric circles and the way they spread the knowledge they produce. The intercollective communication is asymmetrical, occurring predominantly in the direction from EVO-TC to ID-TC, as well as the deviations from meaning. Our results also indicate that a fleckian analysis can contribute to a better characterization of the collectives and styles involved in the debate, supporting the discussion on the subject in the classroom when it is needed. In addition, it contributes to the development of practices and most appropriate strategies to biological evolution education, both those that show how these styles and collectives were formed socially and historically, and those focused on understanding the evolution and deviations of meaning.

Régionalisation du climat avec le modèle LMDZ : étude méthodologique / Climate regionalization with the LMDZ model : methodological study

Li, Shan 29 November 2017 (has links)
The work developed in this thesis explores through methodological modelling studies the current techniques of climate regionalization. In this case, the regionalization focuses on a geographical domain covering from the North Atlantic to Eastern Europe longitudinal wise, and from the Sahel to the Arctic as a latitudinal interval. The aim of this thesis is not the improvement of regional climate modelling per se, but tackling three key questions that are commonly met by all attempts when trying to improve climate regionalization. Firstly, the choice and advantages of the nesting scheme: one-way nesting (OWN) versus two-way nesting (TWN). Secondly, the evaluation of the nesting method, which is generally a Newtonian relaxation operation added to the prognostic equations of the model. And finally, the consequences of the mesh refinement in Regional Circulation Models (RCM). The objective of this manuscript consists in conceptualizing and carrying out numerical simulations to answer these three questions by isolating each individual effect and quantifying the consequences of each of the effects. The general circulation model LMDZ is used for all experiments. It is able to play the role of the General Circulation Model (GCM) and the RCM, keeping the same physical parameterizations and the same dynamical configuration, as well as the same external forcings and model parameters. Our experimental set-up, referred as “Master versus Slave”, consists on two related protocols: “DS-300-to-300” and “DS-300-to-100”. The former implies the downscaling of the GCM at 300 km of horizontal resolution while the RCM has the identical resolution of 300 km. The latter implies the downscaling from 300 km (GCM) to 100 km (RCM). We have assumed the “DS-300-to-300” as an idealized framework, particularly appropriate to evaluate the relaxation operation effect. In parallel, the “DS-300-to-100” protocol, subtracted from the “DS-300-to-300”, allows assessing the effect of the increased resolution for the RCM. In each protocol, two communication schemes between the RCM and the GCM have been implemented. The first one -OWN- is the classic one-way methodology to control the RCM by the outputs of the GCM. The second one -TWN- is used to establish a mutual exchange between the two models (RCM and GCM). This thesis has found that climate regionalization is highly sensitive to the choice of the communication scheme between the RCM and the GCM, especially at mid-latitudes. TWN clearly improves the representation at the boundaries. For the regional atmospheric circulation modes, expressed in EOF structures, both OWN and TWN are able to reproduce them, but with a slight deformation in space. Newtonian relaxation, widely used in climate regionalization, allows the RCM to follow the GCM’s synoptic trajectory. However, temporal concomitance and spatial resemblance of the two depend on the variables considered, on the particular seasons selected, on the weather regimes, and on the spatiotemporal scales of atmospheric circulation. De-correlation cases are remarkable when the dominant circulation on a regional scale is small. Moreover, mesh refinement increases the freedom of the RCM to develop its internal dynamic circulation, especially at small scales, and also across the whole spectrum of circulation regimes through the scales in which the RCM operates. Thus, when resolution increases, the RCM becomes more independent from the GCM behavior and the model results deviate significantly from the GCM. Focused on the methodological aspects of climate regionalization, this thesis helps to gain a better understanding on the regionalization practice. Il also sends a precautionary message to the RCM community, kindly inviting to verify their regionalization strategy.

The hybrid competitive strategy framework : a managerial theory for combining differentiation and low-cost strategic approaches based on a case study of a European textile manufacturer

Lapersonne, Alexandre January 2018 (has links)
The fact that we have entered turbulent times has been a central theme in the recent strategy literature. Turbulent environments are commonly described by increased competitive intensity, disruptive changes in the industry structure, volatility of demand, and unpredictability of customer behaviour, alongside instability of economic, social and political factors. In such a context, the adoption of traditional approaches to strategy, which assumes a relatively stable world, have been questioned by new approaches. Mixed strategy, which emerged as a contingency option to Porter's generic strategies model, defends that in a turbulent environment the simultaneous pursuit of the low-cost and differentiation approaches is fundamental for the short-term performance and long-term survival of the firm. A vast corpus of literature supports the benefits of adopting a mixed approach strategy: several empirical studies have proved that a combination of low-cost and differentiation strategic elements establishes a firm's performance superiority over the pure strategy choice. The mixed literature has concentrated on the performance linkage and on the debate countering the pure strategy approach, however very little attention has been paid to the challenges presented by the mixed strategy implementation. In fact, despite the rich empirical literature, it is still not clear how firms that adopt a mixed strategy may successfully integrate the inherent contradiction of the low-cost and differentiation approaches. The aim of this study is to investigate how a firm has been implementing the mixed strategy approach, unveiling its managerial characteristics and to generate a proposed managerial framework that could serve as a guide for further implementation. This study approaches the subject of mixed strategy implementation on three levels: environment, strategy definition and making process, and value chain activity. After having elucidated several ambiguities related to the concept of mixed strategy present in the literature and having proposed a normalized definition, this study investigates through a unique case study approach, an in-depth explorative process using causal process methods the managerial implication of the mixed strategy. Several characteristics are revealed from the unique case study and represent a major contribution to the field of strategy management. Furthermore, a managerial framework is proposed which could serve as support in the implementation of a mixed strategy.

Sonsin-Oliveira, Julia, 1980- January 2010 (has links)
Due to the great importance of this biome, this paper shows macro and microscopic wood anatomical features of 97 arboreal and shrubby species which occur in cerrado sensu lato, aiming to verify the common structural patterns in the wood, and peculiars to the species that occur in three different physiognomies, cerrado sensu stricto (s.s.), cerradão and riparian zone. Additionally, the external bark morphology of these species was characterized. Macroscopic wood features allied to bark surface features which facilitate separation of species within a family and, mostly species from the same genus were: vessel arrangement, axial parenchyma pattern, ray width (TR), storied rays, presence of exudates and bark internal colour. For cerrado s.l. species we observed anatomic features that may contribute to both safety in water flow and efficiency, such as: high incidence of multiple vessels and high vessel frequency per mm², small intervessel pits alternate, vestured pits, simple perforation plates. The vulnerability and mesomorphy index were 1.6 and 600, respectively. Despite of the majority of cerrado s.l. species anatomical features were framed in the ecological trends for species which occur in tropical lowlands, the specimens which occur in the different physiognomies have anatomical features that show particular strategies for survival in each physiognomy. When comparing the physiognomies, in a general way, riparian zone specimens have larger vessels, low frequency per mm² and larger intervessel pits diameter, what indicates better efficiency in conduction, while cerrado s.s. specimens were the opposite and showed low vulnerability and mesomorphy index, demonstrating greater safety under conditions... / Graft versus host disease (GVHD) is a major complication occurred in patients posttransplantation hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), where the donor's T cells attack the recipient's tissues resulting in a major cause of mortality and morbidity. This is a recurrent and severe event, which occurs in about half of patients who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), the skin is one of the most affected organs. The methodological procedures involved retrospective analysis of data from spreadsheets in the administrative sector of the Bone Marrow Transplant Service, Hospital Amaral Carvalho - Jau, containing information of 1,113 patients who were hospitalized for performing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, related in the period August 1996 to December 2013. to equalize the analysis were included only 582 patients whose diseases were of myeloid lineage - malignant myelopathy (Acute myeloid Leukemia, Chronic myeloid Leukemia, Myelodysplastic Syndrome and Chronic myeloproliferative disease) so that the study group became homogeneous in terms of drugs and conditioning. These 582 patients were divided into 2 groups: patients with GVHDexclusive skin and patients without any GVHD. All data were reviewed and subjected to statistical analysis. In univariate analysis, there is greater survival at 10 years for patients with GVHD to skin grade I and II (p = 0.039) and the transplanted cells Bone Marrow (0018). This significance was maintained in multivariate analysis. The main cause of mortality in the first 100 early days of transplantation was the recurrence of the underlying disease, and acute GVHD responsible for 6% of deaths in this period. There was no significant difference for the other surveyed data. It was concluded that a suitable choice of donors, and the use of bone marrow source as the primary choice for bone marrow transplantation, can reduce the incidence of GVHD, the skin, and increase the survival rate of transplant patients.

The handgrip (FPM) is one of the forms of evaluation of the manual function and one of most common quantifying the manual muscular function and can be used as a general pointer of force and functionality. The objective of the study was to analyze the force of manual hold in women with RA being compared the parameters of the curve force versus time of isometric handgrip of the individuals with and without RA between dominant and not dominant hand and also to verify if isometric handgrip exists association between the parameters of the curve force versus time of handgrip and the disease activity index (DAS28) in the group with RA. In this study participated 28 women being 16 with RA (GA) and 12 without RA (GC), with age between 35 and 75 years. All the participants had told the right hand as dominant hand. They had been carried through: test of blood for calculation of the VHS, the demographic data, the vital signals and the anthropometry, these verify before the FPM. For the FPM test a system of dinamometria with load sensor was used with handle adjustable to the anthropometry of the hand of each participant. A protocol elaborated specifically for this study was followed that consisted of the accomplishment of the FPM isometric continues maximum. After the FPM, was carried through the counting of the pain joints, swollen joints and general evaluation of the health for composition of the disease activity index. In the group with RA it was verified that the pathology has statistical significant influence in the variables Fmax, TFmax, TDF and AFPM in both the hands, presenting significant difference does not enter the groups in the variable %Fmax however a trend to a decline of the Fmax biggest in the GA was verified. AIR significantly influenced four of the five parameters of the curve force versus time evaluated in this study. However, it did not have influence of the changeable dominância in the same parameters amongst the groups. In DAS28, this was correlated only with the Fmax 0 variable in the not dominant hand between the groups, however it not found correlate between DAS28 and dominance and disease variables in the others parameters. The comparative statistical tests had shown significant differences that confirm and validate the benefits of the FPM as the best form to foresee the force manual being able to produce a difference between healthful individuals and pathological individuals.

: En vetenskaplig essä om individens subjektifieringsprocess i fritidshemmets gruppbaserade struktur

Hansson, Jenny January 2018 (has links)
This scientific essay is based on a self experienced situation from my work in after-school activities. Suddenly I find myself in a situation that is not thought through were the only goal is to transfer the students in the school area. I am asking them to stand in line to go to the lunch cafeteria. An obstacle occurs when the students fail or refuses to stand in line, which demands me to reflect over what just has happened. Through this I am stimulated to increase my understanding of the situation. The purpose of this essay is to investigate effects in the initially unreflected structure which is being used in afterschool activities. The standing in line is here used as a representation of that group-based structure. My three main focus areas for this research is learning, power and the tension between individuals and a group. To illustrate the effects in afterschool group-based structure I have chosen a hermeneutic writing. Foucault enriches my knowledge on the complexity of power perspectives that is being revealed in the situation. Through Asap Bartholdsson I am introduced to the concept of ”friendly power” (my translation). With the support of Gert Biestas ́s theories about ”qualification, socialization and subjectification”. I investigate the learning which is not immediately visible. Broadys view on the hidden curriculum shows me a new perspective on the structure and education in after-school activities as normative learning. By the analysis of the tension between individuals and the group I have made visible that the seeing made by the teacher has a big role to play. Also it has become clear that the students individuality and integrity sometimes has to take a step back in favour of the group and vice versa. But if this interaction is balanced it has an enriching effect on both perspectives.
