Who Is Empowered When NGOs Address Human Rights Issues Related to Local Tradition?Håkansson, Malin January 2022 (has links)
It is argued that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has close ties to local religious traditions. At the same time, the international community has agreed on eliminating FGM. Therefore, this thesis investigates the friction between a local tradition and international pressure. Using the method of qualitative content analysis, the thesis analyses the reports from three different international non- governmental organizations (NGOs) to examine how they have designed their programme for eliminating FGM. Three organizations were selected on the basis of their attitude towards religion, as FGM is closely linked to local religious traditions. The results of the reports are analysed using a coding scheme based on theories of religion as a social construction, approaches to human rights and power structures. This paper discovered that an NGO's relationship to religion influences who participates in the programme, and that all of the organizations recognized that they require assistance from local actors to gain access to local communities to implement social change. Findings show that each organization fills a gap the others fail to access. Together, the three development programmes include a large local population as well as national agencies.

Stop Calling Me That! : A Reader-Response Analysis of Bullying in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, in Accordance with Theory of the CarnivalesqueNyberg, Per January 2022 (has links)
In school bullying is a well-known problem and unfortunately it is not uncommon that adults do not see all the signs of a bullying situation. Bullying can be hard to detect and several factors are possible foundation pillars for a hierarchical subjugation of another individual. This essay analyses how the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding conveys bullying, when it is explored through a reader-response lens together with Bakhtin’s theory of the carnivalesque. The carnival setting involves rituals and jokes, which the narrative in the novel uses regularly. Hierarchies should be omitted from the carnivalesque though, and this essay argues that the narrative in Lord of the Flies violates the non-hierarchical concept of the carnivalesque, in order to emphasise intentional malign bullying. The study concretise how this is shown in the novel, and concludes that Lord of the Flies can be helpful in school to raise awareness of the intricate problem of bullying. /
Slutgiltigt godkännandedatum: 2022-06-05

PROGRESS TOWARDS A PRECISION MEASUREMENT OF THE NUCLEAR ANAPOLE MOMENT IN CESIUMAmy J Damitz (18309196) 04 April 2024 (has links)

Parity non-conversation experiments provide a method to explore the weak interaction. Precision measurements of the weak interaction will lead to more limitations on beyond the standard model theories. Our lab will use a two-color coherent control to help us to extract the small amplitude of the weak interaction between the nucleons of the cesium nucleus. In this dissertation, I will discuss how our lab is investigating the anapole moment in cesium using rf and laser fields, along with future steps to finish the measurement.

An Examination of the Relational Aspects of Leadership Credibility, Psychological Contract Breach and Violation, and Interactional JusticeJohnson, Nicole Annette 30 April 2009 (has links)
Especially during times of intense change, managers may negatively impact the quality of employee-manager relationships by breaching or violating psychological contract terms and exhibiting unfair treatment (i.e., interactional injustice) in the workplace. A psychological contract is conceptualized as an exmployee's perception or individualistic belief about the reciprocal and promissory nature of the employment relationship (Argyris, 1960; Levinson, Price, Munden, Mandl, & Solley, 1966; Rousseau, 1989, 1990, 1995; Schein, 1965, 1994). Misperceptions surrounding contractual changes and perceived misalignments between managers' words and deeds have contributed to employee perceptions of contract breach and violation, which are linked to negative employee attitudes and behaviors (Andersson, 1996; Morrison & Robinson, 1997; Pate, Martin, & Staines, 2000; Rousseau, 1995). Employees may simultaneously experience interactional injustice when managers act in disparaging ways and fail to provide adequate explanations (Bies, 1989; Bies & Moag, 1986).
Leadership literature has provided evidence that high-quality leadership can positively influence employees' behaviors and attitudes and increase perceptions of workplace fairness (Dirks & Ferrin, 2002; Kickul, Gundry, & Posig, 2005; Kouzes & Posner, 2003). However, the relational role of leadership credibility, within the context of psychological contract breach and violation and interactional justice, has not been examined in leadership, psychological contract, and organizational justice literatures. This study was designed to explore the relationships between leadership credibility, interactional justice, and psychological contract breach and violation. The results of the study confirmed that employees' perceptions about leaders' credibility does strongly relate to managerial violation, interpersonal justice, and informational justice. / Ph. D.
