A child's journey through traumatic grief: a case study

Goliath, Chantal Debra January 2015 (has links)
The death of a parent is one of the most serious stressors that can occur in a child’s life. The aim of this study was to describe an 11-year-old child’s journey through traumatic grief after the violent death of her mother. The conceptual framework utilised was Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT). The case study approach was applied as it provided a suitable research design in which to give an account of the subject in a therapeutic situation. A purposive sampling technique was utilised to select the research subject in the study. The following three principles of data collection were adhered to: a) using multiple sources of information, b) creating a case study database, and c) maintaining a chain of evidence. Irving Alexander’s content-analysis technique in conjunction with Guba’s model of trustworthiness was employed for data analysis. The finding that emerged from the study was the resilience shown by Linda in relation to her adaptive functioning following the trauma of witnessing the violent death of her mother. Conclusions and recommendations were made following the findings based on the information obtained during the therapy sessions.

Rural Territorial Development in the midst of the conflict

Castro Hernandez, Jorge Alberto January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to provide a critical understanding of a Rural Territorial Development (RTD) intervention in a context of conflict dynamics, by looking at the case of the Programme for Development and Peace in Middle Magdalena (PDPMM) - Colombia. To accomplish this task the research process discussed both theoretical and empirical inputs. Firstly, a theoretical framework was developed to understand the dynamics of the development-conflict nexus in rural territories. Secondly, supported by the examination of a case-study, systematic empirical information was collected, incorporating quantitative and qualitative evidence in order to explore the explicit conflict dynamics, namely the practical and theoretical incommensurability between opposite views of rural development taking place in the Middle Magdalena region. Such analysis was further elaborated in three steps: first, the research characterized the main visions of rural development that are being pursued in Middle Magdalena; second, a comparative analysis was carried out in order to identify incommensurabilities and contradictions among those views of development; and third, the study focused on the PDPMM in order to examine how its rural territorial development strategy influences the course of conflict dynamics. On the basis of this methodology, the study shows that rural territorial interventions should focus on building pragmatic articulations among opposite views of development to establish a common development proposal that overcomes conflict and poverty in rural territories.

Indicators of delay between recommendation for community outpatient treatment and release into a conditional release program

Littlefield, Dennis Howard, Summers, Eric Harley 01 January 1996 (has links)
The mentally ill who have been found not guilty of a crime by reason of insanity (NGRI), appear to be at risk in several areas when confronted with the judicial system. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the factors which predict recidivism of NGRI patients in Community Out-patient Treatment (COT) also inhibit a patient's release into a conditional release program (CONREP).

The Male Ideal and the Lightly Clad Minority : A study about gender distribution and representation in popular video games regarding violent games and fighting games

Holmström, Markus January 2020 (has links)
This study has been performed to give light to numerous observations from earlier studies in how characters are represented in video games. Through examination of 884 characters from 60 games and comparing them to each other depending if the game was violent or not, was a fighting game or not and how popular the game was this study was looking to find several answers regarding how the game industry works and how characters are being represented depending on these factors. This study found that the gender distribution has partially levelled out since former studies (Williams, et al., 2009; Downs och Smith, 2010) and that the hypersexualized  representation has decreased for female characters but increased for male characters for some hypersexual variables. Violent and fighting games hade larger male distribution of male characters, but only fighting games had more hypersexualized characters than its counterpart. Analyses regarding how popular the games was in comparison to each other gave no concrete results.

Nydahl, Michaela, Svedjehammar, Linda January 2019 (has links)
Teachers in Sweden have an obligation by law to prevent violent extremism. This study aims to examine how teachers experience their work in violent extremism prevention. Our study serves as a window to an understanding of how teachers’ work situation affects their ability to prevent students’ expressing extreme opinions. The empirical data from six interviews with sixth form teachers has been analysed through the lens of Lipsky’s theory on street-level bureaucrats (2010). Street-level bureaucrats are workers such as nurses, police officers and teachers - teachers being the focus of this study. Their work is characterised by a degree of discretion in their power to exercise control over the services they provide to recipients such as students (ibid). The study has mainly shown that teachers experience difficulties managing students’ extreme opinions due to inadequate resources and vague organisational expectations. In order to retake control teachers tend to develop patterns of simplifications in their work duties and referring responsibilities to others. Despite the teachers’ ambition to tackle extreme opinions through respectful conversation, they sometimes fail due to a lack of resources such as time and support, resorting to reprimands. Thus, the teachers role as a street-level bureaucrat has a high impact on their ability to work with violent extremism prevention.

Entre radicalisation violente et islamophobie : L’expérience comparée d'étudiants musulmans engagés au sein d'Étudiants Musulmans de France (EMF) et de Federation of Students Islamic Societies (FOSIS) en Grande-Bretagne (2005 – 2015) / Between violent radicalization and islamophobia : the comparative experience of Muslim students involved in Étudiants Musulmans de France (EMF) and Federation of students islamic societies (FOSIS) in Britain (2005 – 2015).

Kassam, Mebarka 20 June 2019 (has links)
From the comparison of the discourse of young French and British citizens of Muslim faith from postcolonial immigration who are involved in Etudiants Musulmans de France and Islamic Societies in a context of international war against terrorism and islamophobia, has emerged an alternative discourse identical to two groups. Their discourse has been inscribed in the process of institutionalizing Islam from the mid-war to the contemporary period to trace the evolution of the constitution of Muslim communities in both countries and the process of racialization of Islamic identity.Considering the differences between French and British state systems, particularly immigration and integration policies, this thesis has sought to demonstrate similarities in the treatment of populations from French and British colonies, from the presence of soldiers, students and immigrant workers of the First World War to the settlement of immigrants from the 1960s-1970s, the emergence on the political scene of the following generations in the 1980s, and the criminalization of young Muslims in the war against violent radicalization from 2005. The analogy between the two countries in the management of postcolonial populations is particularly readable in the process of racialized governance of young people of Muslim faith in the era of security and uninhibited Islamophobia. The figures of the young potential terrorist and the veiled girl have been at the heart of the debates on national identity, French and British values and gender equality since September 11, while Muslim communities are erected into suspect communities. The focus in this work on the comparative experience and subjectivities of the students surveyed has tended to demonstrate how their identity constructions, at the intersection of class, race and gender, blur the established boundaries of ethnic, social and cultural belonging to give way to multiple identifications and representations that transcend established representations. It is at the interstice of different spaces (local, national, international) in a globalized world that an alternative discourse to the homogenizing and essentializing discourse of Muslim identities has emerged.
