The viola and the violin are similar instruments, in shape as much as in its way of playing. However, besides all those similarities, they are two distinct instruments in what are related to the sound production, and it results in subtle differences in playing both instruments. The specific viola technique and teaching method was improved just at the beginning of the 20th century, as consequence of the instrument valorization. With this work, we intend to increase the knowledge of those differences to increase the teachers and players knowledge to give violin and viola classes.

The present dissertation deals with the process of transcription for guitar of Tempo di Ciaccona and Fuga from the Sonata for solo violin (1944) by Béla Bartók. The first chapter introduces essential structural analysis of the movements of Tempo di Ciaccona and Fuga, as well as the historical background of the Sonata for solo violin, and a brief study of the life and musical work of Bartók. It also presents a review of the editions and transcriptions of the Sonata for solo violin, apart from a collection of data about guitar transcriptions of other works by Bartók. The transcription process is approached in the second chapter through comparisons with the violin and the guitar specific instrumental resources, taking in account also other procedures used in guitar transcriptions of works composed for cello or solo violin by Johann Sebastian Bach. Bartóks own piano transcription of some of his Fourty-four Duos for two violins was also taken as an analogous process to be observed in our transcription. In the third and last chapter of this dissertation we present an edition of our transcription for solo guitar of Tempo di Ciaccona and Fuga by Bartók.

A portfolio of music compositions. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collectionJanuary 2012 (has links)
Aiming to channel musical creativity into an array of vehicles, my works composed in 20112012 involve instrumental forces of varying line-up and sizes. Three carefully selected works from the said compositional output are featured in this portfolio: one work for chamber orchestra, one work for symphonic band, and one chamber work for five instruments. Each of them focuses on a different parameter of music ranging from pitch, timbre, texture, to rhythm; by imposing such a focus, it fulfils my intention of stretching my creative potential in all these different parameters, in hopes of expanding the breadth of my musical vocabularies that I could employ with ease and flair in my future works. The parametrical foci are explained as follows. / The Nightmare Escape, a chamber orchestral work, is a composition that focuses on the rhythmic aspect. The irregularities and musical interests in rhythm are emphasized through the economic, if not limited, employment and development of pitch materials that are, for the majority of the piece, organized by pitch-class set harmonically and melodically. / Les Marèes de la nuit, a piece for symphonic band, explores the gradual change of instrumental colour and textures within the domain of winds, brass, and percussions. A key instrument featured in this piece is the tam-tam, which creates a cloud of overtones that seamlessly blend with any of the instrumental sounds from the orchestra. The gradual shifting of sound combination creates the musical interest in this piece. The confining of pitch materials within the F-sharp Dorian mode contributes to the central idea of timbral and textural development. / Fata Morgana, a chamber work for five instruments, experiments with microscopic timbral effects in the strings, namely violin, viola, and double bass, through the employment of gradual yet exaggerative shifting in bow position. At different intervals, this cohort works together or against the double-reed cohort of oboe and bassoon, whose timbral possibilities are also explored through different playing techniques and registers. The pitch material is further streamlined to two interlocking tetrachords that slowly unfold a synthetic scale. Compared to Les Marèes de la nuit, Fata Morgana features more minute timbral and textural changes within a chamber ensemble setting, making the refined and delicate design more readily audible to the audience. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Chan, Kai Young. / Thesis (M.Mus.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Electronic reproduction.
This work investigates simultaneous learning and memorization processes by evaluating the effectiveness of Performance Cues (PCs) according to Chaffin’s protocol. The protocol was used as a deliberate practice strategy for learning and memorizing simultaneously. The purpose of this investigation is to observe the effect of PCs on controling symptoms of anxiety during the performance, as well as how it helps recovery from memory failure episodes by the performer. The study involves four postgraduates violinists and presents the proposal of learning and memorizing a repertoire that was not previously studied in a systematic way. The repertoire could be chosen freely by the participants from the work Sonatas and Partitas by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 1001-1006).

O violino na música popular brasileira: recursos técnico-interpretativos em Ricardo Herz e Nicolas Krassik / The violin in Brazilian popular music: technical and interpretive resources in Ricardo Herz and Nicolas KrassikFillat, Mathilde Tania 29 June 2018 (has links)
In this work, the technical and interpretive resources regarding the contemporary violin in Brazilian popular music are investigated. The research is delimited by the analysis of the performances of the violinists Ricardo Herz and Nicolas Krassik, chosen for using an innovative language composed of a fusion of technical concert music elements, jazz and rhythmic patterns coming from Brazilian musical matrices. The research studies specifically, a relatively recent movement that search for the \"Brazilian Popular Violin\", pointing out the common resources and influences as well as the peculiarities of the violin practices of both violinists. We highlight what seems to be more important, in thought and practice, to play violin in Brazilian music. From the technical point of view, specific bowings used to emphasize the Brazilian syncopation were pointed out: the détaché, the accentuated détaché and the ghost note. We create a discussion about the identity of the \"Brazilian Popular Violin\" and seek its definition underling the aspects which form its originality, focusing on the creation of appropriate resources specific to the instrument. This study allows us to glimpse the possible arising of a popular violin school in Brazil.
