GranCloud: A real-time granular synthesis application and its implementation in the interactive composition Creo.Lee, Terry Alan 12 1900 (has links)
GranCloud is new application for the generation of real-time granular synthesis in the SuperCollider programming environment. Although the software was initially programmed for use in the interactive composition Creo, it was implemented as an independent program for use in any computer music project. GranCloud consists of a set of SuperCollider classes representing granular clouds and parameter objects defining control data for the synthesis. The software is very flexible, allowing users to create their own grain synthesis definitions and control parameters. Cloud objects encapsulate all of the control data and methods necessary to render virtually any type of granular synthesis. Parameter objects provide several simple methods for mapping grain parameters to complex changing data sets or to external data sources. GranCloud simplifies the complex task of generating granular synthesis, allowing composers to focus less on technological issues and more on musical considerations during the compositional process.

This dissertation is a study on the integration of Chinese traditional musical elements in Western-style compositions for the violin by contemporary Chinese composers. As background, the development of musical synthesis in Chinese New Music since the 1930s is reviewed, and essential aspects of the musical language and aesthetics of Chinese Traditional Music are surveyed. Through detailed analyses of three representative compositions by contemporary composers Ma Sicong (1912-1987), Chen Yi (b. 1953), and Bright Sheng (b.1955), their different approaches to the synthesis of Chinese traditional and Western musical styles are examined. Historical context is provided in biographical information about the three composers, including their educational background, musical influences, and compositional styles.

Temporal Plane Shifting and Suspended Time in Something Like Your Lagrangian Point and Nothing Never Always Sometimes ChangesPraetorius, Emily January 2023 (has links)
This paper explores the compositional method of “temporal plane shifting” used to evoke states of suspended time in two of my compositions, Something Like Your Lagrangian Point (2019), for two pianists and two percussionists, and Nothing Never Always Sometimes Changes (2021) for alto flute/piccolo, tenor saxophone, violin, cello, and piano. Temporal plane shifting involves overlaying musical material of unrelated tempi—what I call “temporal planes”—to create an experience of time that parallels being in two different locations or states at once. I argue that this creates the feeling of “suspended time.”
This paper begins with an overarching theory that, because our conceptions of time are bound with our conceptions of motion, states of entrainment are thus felt as locations in space. This argument is then expanded to explain the reasoning behind suspended time as the sensation of being in two locations at once. The rest of the paper uses the aforementioned pieces to explore how temporal planes are composed by way of instrumental juxtaposition, rhythmic juxtaposition, material limitation, and gestural repetition, and ends with a discussion of future considerations for the expansion of temporal plane composition.

Det konstnärliga examensarbetet ”Komplext, enkelt och ensamt” är en undersökning kring likheterna mellan språk och musik. Målet är att få musiken att tala och att hitta min ärligaste tolkning av Allemandan ur Bachs andra solopartita för violin. Genom att analysera satsen som om det vore poesi, med hjälp av den grekiska metrikens versfötter, har jag hittat nya rytmiska mönster i musiken som ger en djupare förståelse av styckets form och struktur. Undersökningen har gjort en genuinare tolkning möjlig. Den har också hjälp mig att tala med musik.

Paul M. Walker points out the importance of three seventeenth-century manuscripts which, according to him, reflect the origins of the late Baroque monothematic fugue. The documents present a new "model" with specific criteria to write monothematic fugues. Walker suggests that the criteria presented in these manuscripts are first found in seventeenth-century Italian violin ensemble fugues. This thesis traces the development of seventeenth-century monothematic fugues and how they compare with the criteria presented in the manuscripts, with a particular emphasis on Italian violin ensemble fugues. The manuscripts indeed present a new "model" to write monothematic fugues as compared to earlier models. Generally speaking, the criteria included in the manuscripts are more present in monothematic fugues found in seventeenth-century violin ensemble music than in keyboard music of the same period. However, many of these imitative pieces present characteristics of fugato (rather than "true" fugues) and cannot be compared with the manuscripts' criteria. Therefore, the documents are important from a theoretical standpoint but their practical application in seventeenth-century violin music is not as clear or systematic as Walker implies.
