Motivation i violinundervisningen. / Motivation in violin studying. : A study of how violin teachers motivate pupils to practice.Öman, Andrea January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the study is to explore and compare the ways in which violin pupils experience motivation and how different forms of motivation determinates motivation to practice and to continue playing the violin. The study has two research questions: How do violin teachers experience that they promote student´s motivation to practice violin? How do violin teachers think their students are motivated to continue playing the violin? The theoretical foundation is Self Determination Theory concerning motivation and practicing. The research method is semistructured interviews and three violin teachers have been interviewed. The interviews were transcribed and processed using thematic analysis and the results presents the phenomenon of motivation. The results are divided into three themes: The teachers encounter with the pupil, The teachers view of how to stimulate pupils to practice and The environments effect on the motivation of the pupil. The result is discussed in relation to former research and the theoretical perspectives of the study in the final chapter of the study.

Trio op. 97, 'Arquiduque' , de Beethoven: um estudo sobre sua interpretação / \"Archduke\", by Beethoven: a study on its interpretation.Viviane Terezinha Mion Bodaczny Taliberti 27 March 2015 (has links)
This study analyzes Trio op. 97, written by Ludwig van Beethoven. It does so by approaching it in connection with performance practice and with a focus on historical, aesthetic, and musicological aspects. The research aimed to recognize technical, sound, and interpretative procedures in this composition in order to achieve a sound unit and a musical thought peculiar to the chamber music formation made of piano, violin and cello. From a methodological point of view, the research relied upon a practical and interpretive study on the piano, a reading of analytical studies on the conception and interpretive aspects of Trio op. 97, an analytic and appreciative listening to recordings of this composition and a reading of its musical score. The interpretive work recurred greatly to the analytical reading of research sources such as autograph manuscript, later editions of its musical score, Beethoven\'s letters to his publishers, and of texts on Beethoven\'s life and music by contemporary commentators of him. Research results show, among other aspects, that Beethoven sought to develop a kind of work in which each instrument\'s characteristics are recognized and valued but it always serves the group. Besides, they show point that Trio op. 97 attributes to the violin a role less prominent than cello\'s; and that with a piano writing focused on chords and varied figures, chamber music\'s balance demands special attention as to the four movements of the Trio. Finally, results indicate that the idiosyncrasies are fundamental to interpret Beethoven\'s notation and musical intentions. That said, systematizing analyzes and making some thoughts on this thesis made possible to clarify, deepen and consolidate certain knowledge on Trio op. 97. But it doesn\'t meant prescribing a direction or an \"absolute truth\" regarding a forma of understanding and valuing it.

The musical trajectories and professional responsibilities of five concertmasters of Brazilian symphony orchestrasJones, Timothy David January 2017 (has links)
The role of the first violinist in a professional symphony orchestra is rarely only to perform. The position of concertmaster, at the professional level, generally constitutes a wide range of responsibilities and activities, not necessarily restricted to the realm of music-making. The present research utilized interviews with five concertmasters of professional Brazilian symphony orchestras in order to respond to the following questions: What is the role of the professional concertmaster? What musical and educational experiences defined the paths of current professional concertmasters in Brazil? What is the scope of their responsibilities as concertmaster? Lastly, what are the expectations of these concertmasters for the future of their own careers, of their Orchestras and of professional Brazilian symphony orchestras in general? After a systematic categorization, twenty-eight professional Brazilian symphony orchestras were identified. The concertmasters of fifteen of these twenty-eight orchestras were contacted with an invitation to participate in a recorded interview. Ultimately, the invitation was accepted by two current and three former professional concertmasters. Analysis of the information gathered through the interviews was further expanded by an investigation into the careers of 16 additional professional concertmasters from various countries who were cited in the present research but not personally interviewed. Several trends were revealed within the life paths and professional perspectives of the concertmasters. Of the five concertmasters interviewed in Brazil, four received musical training outside of South America during their formative years. All five serve or served as music educators in addition to their orchestral work: three at the university level and two with younger students. Only one of the five interviewees passed through a strictly traditional audition process in order to assume the position of concertmaster. Of the 21 professional concertmasters about whom data was collected (including the five interviewees), at least sixteen held the position of concertmaster several times before assuming the role in a prominent orchestra. Five of the 21 concertmasters (including two of the five interviewees) eventually branched into the realm of symphonic conducting, while at least twelve of the 21 did not. Seventeen are or were employed as music professors at the university level. All 21 of the violinists cited within the present research performed solo and/or chamber music regularly throughout their orchestral careers. Ultimately, the interviewees emphasized the following four characteristics as the basic requirements of effective concertmastership at the professional level: (1) technical ability, (2) two-way respect of colleagues, (3) natural leadership/firmness, and (4) a supportive relationship with the conductor.

Elasticity in three compositions with flute by Boris BlacherTaher, Cecilia 01 July 2009 (has links)
This thesis proposes a new concept of form for Boris Blacher's Divertimento for Woodwinds, Duet for Flute and Piano, and Quintet for Flute, Oboe, Violin, Viola, and Violoncello. In 1950, Blacher began to use systematically varying metric units to provide logic to the apparently arbitrary rhythm of modern music. This practice led the few scholars who have studied his compositions to concentrate on the mathematical organization of metrical units, underestimating other musical elements. This dissertation is based on the idea that it is not the mere disposition of meters, but mostly the interaction between them and other musical elements that makes the peculiar durational scheme audible, thus perceptually relevant. Following this, the technique of expansion and contraction that becomes evident in the organization of the meters is also present in the disposition of durations at other hierarchical levels and in the pitch structure. Furthermore, the mathematical metrical scheme is the foundation for a deeper universe of systematic organization. Blacher's techniques provide a unique sense of movement to his compositions, the aural effect of an "elastically developing music." In Duet and Quintet, this idea is also applied in simultaneity to the registral disposition of pitches and textural development, suggesting vertical elasticity. As a result, Blacher's late compositions suggest a replacement of the traditional concepts of form and texture with a new idea of constantly moving, elastic shape.
The methodological approach of this thesis is exclusively analytical and technical, with emphasis on durational and pitch organization, form, texture, and the interaction among these aspects. The individual and comparative analysis of the three compositions reveals a consistent conception of the musical space that emphasizes its bi-dimensional quality. In the Divertimento, the unitary conception of the vertical and horizontal construction is mainly reflected in the bi-dimensional treatment of interval classes that provides coherence to the motivic structure. In Duet and Quintet, this mere idea of consistent organization of the musical materials in the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the total space becomes a unique principle of formal definition, the elastic development of the musical content itself.

Mechanics and acoustics of violin bowing : Freedom, constraints and control in performanceSchoonderwaldt, Erwin January 2009 (has links)
This thesis addresses sound production in bowed-string instruments from two perspectives: the physics of the bowed string, and bow control in performance. Violin performance is characterized by an intimate connection between the player and the instrument, allowing for a continuous control of the sound via the main bowing parameters (bow velocity, bow force and bow-bridge distance), but imposing constraints as well. In the four included studies the focus is gradually shifted from the physics of bow-string interaction to the control exerted by the player. In the first two studies the available bowing parameter space was explored using a bowing machine, by systematically probing combinations of bow velocity, bow force and bow-bridge distance. This allowed for an empirical evaluation of the maximum and minimum bow force required for the production of a regular string tone, characterized by Helmholtz motion. Comparison of the found bow-force limits with theoretical predictions by Schelleng revealed a number of striking discrepancies, in particular regarding minimum bow force. The observations, in combination with bowed-string simulations, provided new insights in the mechanism of breakdown of Helmholtz motion at low bow forces. In the second study the influence of the main bowing parameters on aspects of sound quality was analyzed in detail. It was found that bow force was totally dominating the control of the spectral centroid, which is related to the perceived brightness of the tone. Pitch flattening could be clearly observed when approaching the upper bow-force limit, confirming its role as a practical limit in performance. The last two studies were focused on the measurement of bowing gestures in violin and viola performance. A method was developed for accurate and complete measurement of the main bowing parameters, as well as the bow angles skewness, inclination and tilt. The setup was used in a large performance study. The analyses revealed clear strategies in the use of the main bowing parameters, which could be related to the constraints imposed by the upper and lower bow-force limits and pitch flattening. Further, it was shown that two bow angles (skewness and tilt) were systematically used for controlling dynamic level; skewness played an important role in changing bow-bridge distance in crescendo and diminuendo notes, and tilt was used to control the gradation of bow force. Visualizations and animations of the collected bowing gestures revealed significant features of sophisticated bow control in complex bowing patterns. / QC 20100809

Teaching Rhythm and Pulse to Classical Violinists : How is the teaching designed?Andersson, Charlotte, Davidsson, Emma January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to discern how violin teachers at the Community School of Music teach rhythm and pulse. There is no extensive research in this field and we have attempted to pursue an in-depth study that addresses this issue. Our theoretical starting point is the didactic approach and the study focuses on the tools and methods teachers use. The qualitative interview and video observation were the methods we used in order to obtain answers to our questions. The two informants involved in the study, work at the Community School of Music as violin teachers. The result demonstrates the various ways the two informants teach rhythm and pulse. The result also indicates how the two teachers adapt their teaching based on the children's ability and way of learning.

How should I interpret this? : A study of teachers and pupils communication during one-to one violin lessonsEllinore, Andersson January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study is to explore how teachers and pupils in music schools communicate during one-to-one music lessons with violin as instrument. With video observation as a method, three teachers and three pupils have been observed. This study has its theoretical base in the design theoretical perspective and multimodality. The results show that the teachers use several different ways of communication in their teaching; they instruct and demonstrate, they use questions and metaphors and also communicate in a humorous way. The results even show that the ways of communication are combined in different ways. In the discussion chapter the teachers’ different teaching designs are discussed as well as which conditions different types of designs has for the pupils learning.

The pianist and the Brahms sonata for piano and violin, opus 108 in D minor.Watkins, Marlene Jeanette. January 1989 (has links)
This thesis deals in particular with the pianist's
approach to the Brahms Sonata for Piano and Violin in D
Minor, Opus 108. There are two chapters, the first of
which takes the form of a bibliography in which
different theoretical aspects for consideration in the
learning of the work are presented.
One of the sections in the first chapter which is
entitled The Pianist, should prove helpful to a
prospective piano teacher, as well as a student of the
Brahms Sonata in D Minor, Opus 10 8. In this section
sources presenting different solutions to technical
problems which the pianist is likely to encounter both
generally, and specifically with regard to this Sonata,
are listed.
The other sections in this chapter include a discography
and comments concerning recordings of the Sonata in D
Minor, Opus 108, which a student of this work and its
composer may consult.
The second chapter of the thesis deals with specific
issues involved in the interpretation based on my
performance of the Sonata in D Minor, Opus 108, for the
practical examination. Three other possible
interpretations by well-known pianists are briefly
evaluated. Attached to the thesis is a cassette tape on
which recommendations for the practising of certain
passages may be heard. / Thesis (M.Mus)-University of Natal, Durban, 1989.
