Xarqueada : ficção e documento no romance de Pedro Wayne

Longhi, Ana Maria 08 December 2011 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-07-03T19:11:57Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Ana Maria Longhi.pdf: 1226278 bytes, checksum: cd611df4e72989e1c4e1750cde9ffa83 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-03T19:11:57Z (GMT). It discusses the novel‘s cultural context, as much as its sociohistorical conditions. In the 1930‘s, the state of Rio Grande do Sul experienced important economic, social and politic al changes that can be read from the changes in literature. Therefore, the concept of representation is privileged, from both the perspectives of the novel‘s documental nature and fictional resources. Concepts like fiction and document, and subjects like regionalist literature and ―romance de 30‖ are considered. This discussion is tributary from the theoretical and methodological approaches from the New Cultural History.

The Great One Is Born: Wayne Gretzky's Monumental Season

Ison, Tyler 05 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Statistics and athletic sports have always had a strong connection that many critics, fans and statisticians utilize to determine how successful a team or an individual player might be over an entire season or even throughout one’s career. The success of a player or team is often characterized by investigating the consistency that has been shown throughout the season or career, which has led to more investigation of the streakiness of players. Studies have been done to examine great streaks, such as Joe DiMaggio’s 56 game hitting streak or Tiger Woods’ 142 consecutive cuts made streak, but what about the outstanding streak that occurred during the 1983-1984 NHL season? Wayne Gretzky, of the Edmonton Oilers, managed to showcase just how elite he was as a playmaker during that season. Gretzky produced a remarkable 51-game point streak, in which he recorded at least one goal or point in 51 consecutive games; a streak that has not received the recognition that it deserves. Using game-by-game data for the entire 1983-1984 NHL season for all players, the research looks at not only the evaluation of Gretzky’s streak, but also compares his production and streak to the remainder of the league. Gretzky demonstrated why he is one of the greatest players to ever step foot on the ice, and his elite status is shown throughout this analysis. Comparing Gretzky’s streak to that of DiMaggio’s was shown to be a little challenging but, some general conclusions were made based on the comparison of analyses that were performed; but without the proper statistics being readily available, it is hard to adequately dictate which streak is ultimately more impressive or more rare.

Reverence and Rhetorology: How Harmonizing Paul Woodruff's Reverence and Wayne Booth's Rhetorology Can Foster Understanding Within Communities

Ogden, Jonathan D. 24 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Wayne Booth's neologism rhetorology, introduced in 1981, hasn't caught on in rhetorical scholarship. Nevertheless, in this essay I hope to revive rhetorology by harmonizing it with Paul Woodruff's work on reverence. I show how harmonizing these terms makes each more comprehensible. In order to illustrate how reverence and rhetorology might be made more practical I also analyze two arguments in the health care debate leading up to the passing of the Affordable Health Care for America Act in early 2010. Ultimately I hope to show that rhetorology is a reverent rhetorical practice, one that can help us restore a needed sense of communal reverence in contemporary democracy.

The commercial architecture of A.M. Strauss in Fort Wayne, Indiana

Galbraith, Michael B. January 2006 (has links)
This creative project presents an overview of the architectural styles and history of the surviving commercial architecture of A.M. Strauss in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was the best known architect working in Fort Wayne during the period covered by this creative project, and his work is an excellent example of how national architectural trends affected architecture in Fort Wayne. His commercial architecture represents his best known and most significant work. He did far too many buildings to cover in a single thesis, and so his residential and institutional architecture in Fort Wayne remains for another study, as do his many works outside of Fort Wayne. This project also brings together in one treatment as much photographic, historical and architectural documentation of these buildings as possible — documentation now scattered across east central and northeast Indiana. It traces Strauss's stylistic changes from Spanish Eclecticism through Art Deco and Art Moderne to Modernism. The surviving buildings represent each of these styles and shifts in historical context. / Department of Architecture

The 1901 Fort Wayne, Indiana City Election: A Political Dialogue of Ethnic Tension

Brown, Nancy Eileen January 2013 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In 1901, three German American candidates ran for the office of mayor in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The winner, Henry Berghoff, had emigrated from Germany as a teenager. This thesis examines the election discourse in the partisan press for signs of ethnic tension. The first chapter places Fort Wayne in historical context of German immigration and Indiana history. The second and third chapters investigate the editorial pages for evidence of ethnic tension. I also reference a few articles of an editorial nature outside of the editorial pages. The second chapter provides background information about the election and examines indications of the candidates’ ethnicity and references to the German language papers. The third chapter considers the editorial comment about Germany, the intertwining of ethnicity and the issues, and ethnic name-calling. In order to identify underlying bias for or against Germany and to better understand the context of the references to German ethnicity, the fourth chapter explores the portrayal of Germany in the Fort Wayne papers.

Social media and weather warnings : exploring the new parasocial relationships in weather forecasting / Title on signature form: Social media and weather warnings : exploring the new parasocial relationship in weather forecasting

Klotz, Adam M. 08 July 2011 (has links)
The emergence and popularity of mobile and social media have transformed the nature of the parasocial relationship between weathercaster and audience. Two experts and nine television viewers were selected for qualitative interviewing via non-probability sampling to gain an understanding of how respondents’ growing use of social media and other emerging media has impacted the relationship with the local television weathercaster. Additionally, these interviews explored the ways in which these relationships have ultimately changed how viewers receive weather warnings. Storms producing strong straight-line winds and multiple tornadoes in the Fort Wayne, Indiana television market provided a case study that illuminated the role of trust in the complex relationships between weather forecasting and new social media. Mobile and social media have increased the weather forecasters’ influence over the audience, while quickly allowing them to provide severe weather warnings. This study demonstrates the popularity of social media among diverse age groups and that user demographics do not indicate any level of social media literacy. Second, as the literature suggests, this study confirms users’ trust in their weather forecasters as well as the informationseeking behavior displayed during severe weather. Third, this research finds that social media has transformed parasocial relationships. Finally, this study suggests that stations have not recognized nor taken advantage of these new parasocial relationships, and that they can do so by promoting TV personalities’ online social profiles. / Introduction -- Literature review -- Methods -- Trust, weather forecasting and social media -- Online presence -- Conclusion. / Department of Geography

De sex hörnstenarna - En teoriprövande studie

Lotten, Kristoffer January 2018 (has links)
Development of concepts for victory through exercises, simulations and force comparison is a continuously ongoing process in military organizations. A complementing method of contributing to concepts for victory can be made through systematic testing of existing theories which prescribes such concepts. This can provide knowledge regarding the validity of a theory and provide fundamental insights concerning which basic factors contributes to victory in naval combat. In this essay Wayne P. Hughes Six Cornerstones are tested through a qualitative case study of the battle of the Nile in 1798 and the Falklands campaign in 1982 to test its explanatory value for victory. The results show findings of the theory in both cases and larger deviations only occurred between two cornerstones. The largest deviations occurred between the cornerstones which contained specific descriptions for successful actions. The cornerstones which described success in a general manner and as desired effects were more applicable in the cases. This strengthens the fact that a recipe for specific actions in combat hardly can prescribe general success. The results also show that general descriptions can be viewed valuable for what it excludes, not for what it specifically prescribes. More research has to be done to say something further regarding the validity of the theory.

Wayne p. Hughes och Geoffrey till : en teoriprövande fallstudie på Yom Kippur-kriget 1973

Garström, Martin January 2019 (has links)
In the current research, the factors of success and foundational principles of war are vaguely described; this is in spite of their prominent occurrence in military doctrines. There seems to be a lack of empirical evidence underpinning the theories of Wayne P. Hughes (2000) and Geoffrey Till (2014) and also few or none precursor studies that apply these frameworks to the analysis of modern sea battles, which reduces their theoretical validity. This paper aims to address the gap in empirical research in the field by applying the theories of Hughes and Till to a case-study examination of the Yom-Kippur war 1973 and to determine their utility and relevance for analysing modern naval warfare. The findings of the case-study indicate that Hughes’ theory in particular can contribute to the theoretical analysis of modern naval warfare since all factors of success were fulfilled. Nine of the eleven factors of Till's theory were identified in the analysis, and these nine are regarded as having high explanatory power. The remaining two factors partly identified in the analysis are regarded as having less relevance as factors of success for modern naval warfare. More empirical studies have to be researched to allow generalization of this papers results.

Neighborhood park (Fort Wayne) : a study for better environment

Hong, Sung Kwon January 1985 (has links)
This study was an effort to identify the reasons for use or under use of neighborhood parks in Fort Wayne, IN and to suggest the solutions for the problems found. Two heavily used parks and two underutilized parks were chosen after an interview with the Director of Parks and Recreation Departments of Fort Wayne. Questionnaires and direct observation were the two major tools used to understand user preferences and tendencies. Each data were analyzed to find out the differences between the heavily and underutilized parks in the categories of age, sex, income and race. The significant differences between under and heavily used parks were found by the quantity and quality of each park's facilities and by the racial characteristic of residents around the each park. Environmental and social factors, and user satisfaction with their neighborhood park are suggested to be the solutions. The solutions may be used as a general recommendation to improve the conditions of neighborhood parks. / Department of Landscape Architecture
