Web vs. Standalone Application / Web vs. Standalone Application

Molin, Patrik, Löfberg, Martin January 2005 (has links)
Many companies want a lot of functionality over the web. Is it possible to achieve the same functionality on the web compared to an ordinary windows application? Our work aims towards evaluating which one of the solutions that is the best. Many customers wants a standalone application rich of functionality and demands to have the same functionality on the web. Is it always possible to achieve the costumer’s requirements on a web based solution or do you have to settle with an implementation of a standalone application? There are some factors that the answer depends on: performance, security, usability and implementation. The application that will be tested is developed in .Net and is a maintenance application for Business Intelligence (BI). We will have a short introduction to the Business Intelligence field to make you understand the purpose of the application.

Testing Challenges in Web-based Applications with respect to Interoperability and Integration / Testande Utmaningar i Webbaserade Applikationer med avseende på Interoperabilitet och Integration

Farooq, Umar, Azmat, Usman January 2009 (has links)
Testing is one of the critical processes in software development life cycle. It plays key role in the success of software product by improving its quality. Web-based applications are emerging and evolving rapidly; their importance and complexity is also increasing. Heterogeneous and diverse nature of distributed components, applications; along with their multi-platform support and cooperativeness make these applications more complex and swiftly increasing in their size. Quality assurance of these applications is becoming more crucial and important; testing is one of the key processes to achieve and ensure the quality of these software or Web-based products. There are many testing challenges involved in Web-based applications. But most importantly interoperability and integration are the most critical testing challenges associated with Web-based applications. There are number of challenging factors involved in both integration and interoperability testing efforts. These integration and interoperability factors have almost 70 percent to 80 percent impact on overall quality of Web-based applications. In software industry different kind of testing approaches are used by practitioners to solve the issues associated with integration and interoperability, which are due to ever increasing complexities of Web-based applications. It is fact that both integration and interoperability are inter-related and it is very helpful to cover all the possible issues of interoperability testing that will reduce the integration testing effort. It will be more beneficial if a dedicated testing team is placed to perform the both integration and interoperability testing. / +46 73 55 955 15 +46 73 95 120 32

Enhancing Accessibility of Web Based GIS Applications through User Centered Design / Ökad tillgänglighet av webbaserade GIS-applikationer genom användarcentrerad design

Babar, Shahzad, Mehmood, Aamer January 2010 (has links)
Web Accessibility emerged as problem when disabled and elder people started interaction with web contents soon after the inception of World Wide Web. When web based GIS applications appeared on the scene of web and users of these kinds of applications increased, these applications faced the similar problem of accessibility. The intensity of web accessibility problems in GIS based applications has increased rapidly during recent years due to extensive interaction of user with maps. Web Accessibility problems faced by users of GIS applications are identified by content evaluation and user interaction. Users are involved in identification of accessibility problems because guidelines and automated tools are not sufficient for that purpose. User Centered Approach is used to include users in the development process and this has also helped in identification of accessibility problems of the users at early stages. The thesis report identify the accessibility issues in Web based GIS application by content evaluation and user interaction evaluation. MapQuest, a web based GIS application, is taken as a case study to identify the web accessibility problems in GIS applications. This thesis report has also studied that how accessibility of the web based GIS applications can be enhanced by using UCD approach in development process of GIS applications.

Using XML as an Intercommunication medium in Web-Based Information Systems

Helgason, Magnus Thor January 2001 (has links)
The Web has been defined as the interface between Web servers and Web clients. Traditionally, HTML has been used as an intercommunication medium for the Web. Web-Based Information Systems (WBISs) is the most general class of Web sites being fully distributed, platform-independent and having a hypertextual user interface. XML is emerging as a new standard for data exchange and data representation on the Internet. The W3C Consortium is responsible for the development of standards for the Web. In this dissertation we have showed how XSL and XPath could be used to meet the query requirements of SWISS-PROT, which is a WBIS. We have showed that XSL offers some level of extensibility as a query language for SWISS-PROT, but if queries were to be extended to a high level of complexity XQuery would be more appropriate to use since using XSL for this purpose includes hand-coding of for-loops and if-statements. Another problem is related to maintenance. Updating the structure of the XML source would include updating hand-coded for-loops and if-statements. There is still no recommendation available for XQuery at the W3C Consortium. Considering other factors of information management, we have showed that XSL and XPath would play a significant role in displaying and formatting information in SWISS-PROT. This would though require that Web browsers in SWISS-PROT have standardised support for XML.

Development of Web-based Health Care Services in Swedish County Councils : Strategies, Usage and Challenges

Acheampong, Faustina January 2010 (has links)
eHealth has been adopted by many countries across the globe in response to cut down cost and improve the quality of life. Sweden has been engaged in providing web-based health care services for its citizens for the past decade and county councils have the responsibility to develop them. The main aim of this thesis is to present answers to the following research questions:What strategies (formal and informal) guide the development of web-based health care services provided by the Swedish county councils? What barriers exist in relation to the development and usage of web-based health care services provided by the county councils from the viewpoint of their IT leaders? From the perspective of IT leaders in the county councils and in their capacity to develop, manage and monitor their organizations‘ website content, which web-based health care services are mostly accessed by users and what age group utilize the services most? The thesis is an exploratory research conducted through a survey based on a mail questionnaire that was posted to all 21 county councils in Sweden with 18 councils responding. The results show that all county councils have formally adopted the National eHealth Strategy to guide the development of web-based health care services and some have other informal strategies as well. Technological barriers, resistance to use the web-based services and changing business process to integrate ICTs have been identified by IT leaders as major challenges that impede the development of web-based health care services in Swedish county councils. Swedish citizens more frequently access prescription renewal and booking and cancellation of appointments than other available web-based health care services which depicts a trend towards the use of advanced interactive services than basic information seeking, and people in the ages of 46 to 55 have been identified as the frequent users of web-based health care services according to IT leaders from the county councils.

Web-based ERP Systems : With a focus on SMEs

Bogojevski, Aleksandar, Buanahagi, Edelson, Svensson, Patrik January 2010 (has links)
Web-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems deployed through theSoftware-as-a-Service (SaaS) model are a major disruptive technology in the fieldof ERP systems. The defining features of the SaaS are that they are hosted remotelyand are completely used through the web; they are subscription-payment basedand they operate on a multi-tenant fashion. This technological innovation redefinestraditional technical and economic ERP paradigms. This Bachelor’s thesis aims through interviews with vendors, users and consultants,as well as by researching various academical and professional publications onthe subject of Web-based (SaaS) ERPs to study these pehomena, and produce a listof their benefits to SMEs. It also analyses their opportunities and challenges via anumber of interesting facts, thus allowing for thought-provoking observations andspawning of stirring discussions. The benefits of Web-based ERPs were reported to be similar to the ones characteristicfor the On-premise ERPs. They furthermore included remote data access, costefficiency, flexibility, scalability, as well as the esublishment of a new customerdrivenrelationship with the ERP vendor. The major disadvantages of SaaS wereconsidered to be security, cost (in the long run), and customizability. These disadvantages, which were first reported years ago, are continuously dismissed by theadavncements and innovations made in Web-based solutions. Findings from previousstudies and trends suggest that issues of security, cost and customizabilityare gradually disappearing as technology improves and industry dynamics becomesmore customer-centric. Security, which was a major issue in 2007 slowlyfaded and is not regarded as the concern it used to be. From 2008 till now the issuesof customizability and TCO have been heavily disputed about Web-based ERPsolutions. The problem of customizability has also been found to be diminishingdue to technologically advanced capabilities of these systems; new systems haveemerged and old systems have improved enough to provide this feature. Cost hasnever been a transparent issue when it comes to IT investments and has beenshown to be higher in On-Premise solutions through the TVO approach whichlooks at other hidden and non-financial costs. All of the above sheds new light intothe once-‘static’ benefits and drawbacks of Web-based solutions, and provides afresh insight into this developing phenomenon.

Heuristisk Utvärdering och Användartestning av ett Verktyg för Web-based Training : Korrespondensen mellan Predicerade och Observerade Användbarhetsproblem

Varpstuen, Johan January 2000 (has links)

Challenges and Opportunities in Migrating to Web-based Informations Services : Perspective of Web-based Enterprise

Dong, Zhu January 2008 (has links)
For now, vastly growing Web-technology has matured enough to become an attractiveplatform for business applications and organizational information systems. Indeed, largeand small organizations are increasing their investment in Web-based Information Systems(IS) resources, such as Electronic Commerce, Intranets and Extranets. As DIWA(1999) explained that Web technology is often presented as a 'revolution' in informationsystem technologies in the business press, which could propel change from static, hierarchicalstructures to more dynamic, flexible and 'knowledge-based' organizationalforms. To the companies, more and more legacy information and database systems arebeing migrated to Web-based environments. This research aims to analyse and advise enterprises to be Web-based enterprise withchallenges and opportunities. During the research, the author investigated a company that were using the Web-based(applications made available via the World Wide Web) information service. For obtainingreliable conclusions and delivering valuable advises, various research methods wereadopted by the author including qualitative research methodology, analysis, interviews, and literature study. Data was collected through lecture review and in-depth interviews. Undoubtedly, there are some troubles existed in migrating, such as technologies for restructureinformation system structure, resource distribution, benefit analysis, planningand management, operation and maintenance etc. But still obviously, as the research shows that there are many benefits can be got followsthe implementation of Web-based solution, which includes improving efficiency, modernizing company IT environment, providing better IS/IT systems’ maintenanceand providing more agility and functionality etc.

Procedural Content Generation for a Web-Based Motion Game to Increase the Variation and Progression of the Game

Persson, Dennis January 2016 (has links)
Computer games have always become more and more advanced. One of the biggest reasons to its rapid evolution is the use of procedural content generation (PCG), which is used to generate game content automatically. However, there is one type of games that is more unexplored when it comes to PCG, namely motion games. Motion games are games where the player interacts with the game by moving his own body rather than using a gamepad, mouse or keyboard. Thanks to that, motion games are a healthier alternative to regular games, and this thesis therefore explores the possibilities to use PCG to develop more exciting motion games. The focus lies on achieving variation and progression since both of those are important concepts closely related to PCG. An exploratory case study is also conducted to examine how the derived guidelines work in a real game. The result concluded is that the guidelines seem to work well, but that all of them are not easily adapted to every game. Different game genres therefore call for different guidelines to be used.

Effects of design and feedback in a motion-based game

Cronstrand, Rasmus January 2015 (has links)
Movement-based games are becoming more frequent in everyday lives. With easier access to webcams built into laptops and web-based games, a game which utilises both concepts can become a good option for everyday gaming. This study evaluates a movement-based game written in JavaScript using phaser.io which uses a webcam for control and HTML5 technique for capture. The main questions in the study are what observations can be done and are there any problems when developing a game with webcam-based motion-detection in regards to factors like flow, feedback and positioning. This study tries to answer these questions by building upon an existing game and implementing new functions and feedback and then observing how these effect the game-play. The results of the study showed that it is important to consider good feedback and how to position oneself when playing such a game and that more testing should be done to gain further knowledge about these two. But also that many of the implementations done made the person achieve flow while playing. Further work should be beneficial also to make the game even better while keeping it easy to play.
