Writing with "one hand for the booksellers": Victorian Poetry and the Illustrated Literary Periodical of the 1860s

Ehnes, Caley Liane 28 May 2014 (has links)
Focusing on the poetry published in the Cornhill, Once a Week, Good Words, and the Argosy, four of the most prominent illustrated literary periodicals of the 1860s, this dissertation contends that the popular poetry found in mid-century periodicals is not only essential to our understanding of the periodical press, but also that the periodical is integral to our understanding of Victorian poetics. Each chapter examines the poetry and poetics of a single periodical title and addresses several key issues related to the publication of poetry in the periodical press: the power and influence of illustrated poetry in contemporary visual culture, the intended audience of the literary periodical and the issues that raises for editors and poets, the sociology and networks of print, and the ways in which periodical poetry participated in contemporary debates about prosody. This dissertation thus offers an alternative history of Victorian poetry that asserts the centrality of the periodical and popular poetry. In other words, it argues that without a consideration of the vital importance of periodical poetry, Victorian poetry studies is quite simply anachronistic. / Graduate / 2018-12-31 / 0593 / 0391

Investigating Trends in Long Work Hours in the U.S. by Demographic Group, 1979-2017

Maser, Alexandra 01 January 2018 (has links)
Many studies have found an increase in the percentage of workers working 50 or more weekly hours in the second half of the 20thcentury; however, few studies extend this analysis into the 21stcentury, and few have analyzed these patterns for women in depth. This paper provides an analysis of long work hours for men and women from 1979 to 2017. I investigate how workers who differ in education level, presence and age of children, salary type, and occupation gender-mix classification (for managerial/professional occupations), differ in their likelihood to work long hours. Using a linear probability model, I determine that those most likely to overwork include highly educated men and women, men with children, women without children, salaried workers, and workers in historically male-dominated managerial/professional occupations. Finally, using a Oaxaca decomposition, I find that changes in observable characteristics can account for between 52.28% and 72.62% of the 2 percentage point decrease in long work hours seen for men between the 2000-2002 time period and the 2015-2017 time period.

Barnmorskors uppfattning om induktion i graviditetsvecka 41 respektive 42 : Semistrukturerade intervjuer

Hansson, Felicia, Wernholm, Emma January 2021 (has links)
Background: In Sweden today, there is recommended induction in week 42+0, in order to avoid overbearing. Maternity care in Sweden is constantly changing and since 1994 there has been an increase in inductions. A probable reason for this is that maternity clinics choose to induce childbirth even before 42 full weeks of pregnancy have been reached. Aim: To describe the delivery midwifes perception of induction in pregnancy week 41 and pregnancy week 42, during a normal uncomplicated pregnancy.Method: A qualitative interview study with an inductive approach based on eight semi-structured interviews - analyzed - with content analysis. Results: The analysis generated in four main categories: the body is not ready, the midwifery profession is threatened, ambiguity in society about inductions and lack of evidence. Midwives perceive risks and consequences with an immature cervix during induction. They perceive that the normal disappears in maternity care and becomes more physician-directed care that leads to an increased workload. Midwives also perceive a lack of evidence and ignorance in society regarding inductions. Conclusion: Induction is good when needed and when there are medical indications for it, but the midwifes believe and want the women’s healthcare to take a step back and start daring to trust the female body again.

Seger, Mikaela, Hägglund, Leonora, Pitkänen, Heli January 2022 (has links)
The purpose is to contribute knowledge about consumers' attitudes to                          Black Week. This study is based on a quantitative research method where data was collected using a digital survey. The result indicates that swedish consumers have varying attitudes towards Black Week. These attitudes are based on various variables as well as emotions that in different ways affect a consumer's attitude towards Black Week. The study indicates that all the emotions mentioned have an influential effect on Swedish consumers' attitudes. The study also shows that Swedish consumers' behavior is dependent on their attitude to Black Week. Consumers who have a positive attitude towards Black Week relate more to motives for consumption, while those who have a negative attitude towards Black Week relate more to motives against consumption.
