PETROLEUM HYDRATE DEPOSITION MECHANISMS: THE INFLUENCE OF PIPELINE WETTABILITY

Aspenes, Guro, Høiland, Sylvi, Barth, Tanja, Askvik, Kjell Magne, Kini, Ramesh A., Larsen, Roar 07 1900 (has links)
The mechanisms by which hydrates deposit in a petroleum production-line are likely to be related to pipeline surface properties, e.g. pipeline material, surface energy and roughness. In this work, the wettability alteration of pipeline surfaces from contact with oil, as well as the adhesion energy between water and solid in the presence of oil is investigated. Contact angles are determined as a function of solid material and oil composition, for both model oils and crude oils. Although contact angles in oil/brine/solid systems have been extensively reported in the literature, the variety of solids that may mimic a pipeline is limited. In this study, we include various metal surfaces in addition to glass and a coating. Initial results from using near infrared imaging for collecting contact angle data in non-translucent systems are also presented.

Amoniakinės taršos įtaka paprastosios pušies (Pinus sylvestris L.) spyglių hidrofobiškumo ir mezomorfiškumo dinamikai / Needle of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) hidrofobic and mezomorphic dynamics in the effect of ammonia pollution

Vilčinskas, Ramūnas 21 June 2010 (has links)
Magistro darbe tiriama paprastosios pušies (Pinus sylvestris L.) būklė amoniakinės taršos poveikyje. Darbo objektas – paprastoji pušis (Pinus sylvestris L.) – labiausiai paplitusi Lietuvoje, jautri užterštam orui medžių rūšis, augantys prie AB „Achema“ 0,5 km. spinduliu aplink gamyklą vakarų, šiaurės ir šiaurės rytų kryptimis ir Kačerginės pušyne. Darbo metodai – spyglių paviršių hidrofobiškumo tyrimas atliekamas šviesiniu mikroskopu, pagal Cape (1983) aprašytą metodiką. Mezomorfiškumo tyrimo metu tirti spyglių pjūviai šviesiniu mikroskopu. Darbo rezultatai. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) state the effect of ammonia pollution was investigated in the work of master science. Object of the work – Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) – the most common in Lithuanian territory, sensitive to air pollution tree species, growing in the vicinity of the nitrogen fertilizer factory in the west, north and north-east direction and control site. Method of the work – hydrophobicity of leaf surface, under light microscope according to Cape (1983) described the methodology. Investigate mezomorphic study needle incisions by light microscope. The results of the work. The investigation of water droplet contact angles is an unexpensive and accurate method used to evaluate the trees condition. The values of the contact angles of the water droplets on the surface of the needles were higher in control site. Near the nitrogen factory contact angles of the water droplets on the surface of current–year needles were 83-102 °, 1–year–old needles –68-79. Investigation showed, that present level nitrogen pollution might cause the erosion of the needle surface and more wettable surface might cause the development of pathogenic microorganisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate histological parameters of the needlles and tissues between sites with different ammonia concentration. Histological evaluation of the needles did not allow to detected changes in cross section parameters and defiance mesomorphic features growth. Current–year needle thickness was 0... [to full text]

Use Of Pore Scale Simulators To Understand The Effects Of Wettability On Miscible Carbon Dioxide Flooding And Injectivity

Uzun, Ilkay 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This study concentrates on the modelling of three phase flow and miscible CO2 flooding in pore networks that captures the natural porous medium of a reservoir. That is to say, the network, that is a Matlab code, consists of different sided triangles which are located randomly through the grids. The throats that connect the pores are also created by the model. Hence, the lengths and the radii of the throats are varying. The network used in this research is assumed to be representative of mixed-wet carbonates in 2-D. Mixed wettability arises in real porous media when oil renders surfaces it comes into prolonged contact with oil-wet while water-filled nooks and crannies remain water-wet. The model developed is quasi-static approach to simulate two phase and three phase flows. By this, capillary pressures, relative permeabilities, saturations, flow paths are determined for primary drainage, secondary imbibition, and CO2 injection cases. To calculate the relative permeability, capillary entry pressures are first determined. Then, hydraulic conductances and flow rates of the network for each grid are obtained. Phase areas and saturations are also determined. It is accepted that the displacement mechanism in drainage and CO2 injection is piston-like whereas in imbibition it is either piston-like or snap-off. The results of the model are compared with the experimental data from the literature. Although, the pore size distribution and the contact angle of the model are inconsistent with the experimental data, the agreement of the relative permeabilities is promising. The effect of contact angle in the same network for three phase flow where immiscible CO2 is injected as a third phase at supercritical temperature (32 &deg / C) is investigated. And it is found that, the increase in the intrinsic angles causes decrease in relative permeability values. As another scenario, two phase model is developed in which miscible CO2 &amp / #8211 / water is flooded after the primary drainage of the same 2-D network at supercritical temperature (32 &deg / C). This case is compared with the previous case and the effects of miscibility are investigated such that it causes the relative permeability values to increase. Adsorption is another concern of which its effects are analyzed in a single pore model. The model is compared with the reported experimental data at high temperature and pressures. A reasonable fit is obtained.

Wettability of solid metals by low melting non-metallic inclusions

Parry, Gavin Wayne, Materials Science & Engineering, Faculty of Science, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
A project studied wetting of iron, nickel and platinum by molten MnO-SiO2 (MS) and CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CAS) slags of eutectic composition to contribute to understanding of wetting behaviour of solid metal-molten oxide systems relevant to steelmaking. Novel results of dynamic wetting behaviour by the sessile drop method were obtained under strongly reducing atmosphere (oxygen partial pressure 10-20 -- 10-18 atm). Terminal contact angles (after 240 min) for MS slag were: for iron substrates -5??2??(1350??C), 9+-2?? (1390??C), 6+-2 (1450??C); nickel -- 3+-2??(1350 and 1390??C); and platinum --15+-2??(1350 and 1390??C), 12+-2??(1450??C). Contact angles with CAS slag were: iron -- 55+-2??(1350??C), 60+-2?? (1390??C), 44+-2?? (1450??C); nickel -- 59+-2??(1350??C), 60+-2?? (1390??C); and platinum -- 15+-2?? (1350, 1390 and 1450??C). Values for interfacial tension, work of adhesion, spreading parameter (S) and interaction coefficient (Ф) were also determined. Work of adhesion for all three substrates with MS slag changed in a very narrow range 910 - 930 mJ/m2. Interfacial tension with this slag was 1,480 mN/m for Ni at 1350-1390??C, and 1,880-1,890 mN/m for Pt in the temperature range 1,350-1,450??C. For iron, interfacial tension was 1,720 mN/m at 1350??C (γ-Fe); it decreased to 1590-1580 mN/m with increasing temperature to 1390 and 1450??C (-Fe). Lower work of adhesion and higher interfacial tension was found for metals with CAS slag. Wetting properties of Pt substrate with MS slag were close to that with CAS slag, while Fe and Ni substrates showed better wetting by MS slag in comparison with CAS slag. This was attributed to higher reactivity of Fe and Ni with MS slag, particularly reduction of MnO. Although MnO was also reduced in reaction with Pt, oxygen adsorption in contact with both slags was a major factor governing wettability of Pt. Dissolution of manganese in nickel and platinum substrates at elevated temperatures modified the interface chemistry, causing formation of a liquid alloy phase. Degree of silica reduction from MS slag was much smaller in comparison with MnO reduction (negligible for Pt); it was very minor from CAS slag. Concentration profiles of Mn and Si across the interface and along the metal surface were used to estimate diffusion coefficients. Diffusion along metal surfaces was generally higher by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude than across the interface. Reduction of oxides and adsorption of oxygen modify the metal-oxide interface, making wetting dynamic. They have a profound on interfacial properties.

However, this material has some limitations as low superficial tension, flat surface, low affinity to dyers, and poor adhesion which impede the use of the same ones for some finality as good wettability. Among the existent techniques to increase the superficial tension, plasma as energy source is the more promising technique, because of their versatility and for not polluting the environment. The plasma surface polymeric modification has been used for many researchers, because it does not affect the environment with toxic agents, the alterations remains only at nanometric layers and this technique shows expressive results. Then, due to its good acceptance, polyester films were treated with oxygen plasma varying the treatment time from 10 to 60 min with an increase of 10 min to each subsequent treatment. Also, the samples were treated with a gas mixture (nitrogen + oxygen) varying the percentage of each gas the mixture from 0 to 100%, the treatment time remaining constant to all treatments (10 min). After plasma treatment the samples were characterized by contact angle, surface tension, Raman spectroscopy, Infrared attenuated total reflection (IR-ATR) and atomic force microscopy, with the aim to study the wettability increase of treated polyester films as its variables. In the (O2/N2) plasma treatment of polyester films can be observed an increase of superficial roughness superior to those treated by O2 plasma. By the other hand, the chemical modification through the implantation of polar groups at the surface is obtained more easily using O2 plasma treatment / Filmes de poli?ster possuem um vasto campo de aplica??o, devido algumas propriedades que s?o inerentes desse tipo de material, tais como boa resist?ncia mec?nica, resist?ncia qu?mica a ?cidos e bases e baixo custo de produ??o.

The physical properties of the rocks have great importance in the planning, execution and cost of the reservoir engineering projects. The objective of this research is to evaluate the electrical properties of the rocks from the analysis of x-ray microtomography images, in addition to searching for a correlation with the other petrophysical properties. For the development of this research, 16 samples of carbonates, 12 limestone and 4 dolomites, were selected from three different basins (Araripe, Potiguar and Sergipe - Alagoas). In this research, from the microtomographic images and the use of Avizo Fire software, computational petrophysical data were obtained, as well as the generation of a three - dimensional mesh to simulate the electrical properties of the samples, being this simulation carried out in Comsol Multiphysics software. Using some properties obtained in the research and applying the Archie’s law, it was possible to evaluate the wettability of the samples. The values of total density also have good relation with the porosity and saturating fluid. When analyzing the relationship between porosity and permeability, can be highlighted the samples with similar porosity values, but with very different permeabilities. This factor can be explained by the low connectivity of the pores, resulting in low permeability. When comparing the porosities obtained by conventional and computational tests, in some cases different values were observed for the same sample. This can be explained by the subjective choice of the subvolume of the computational sample and the fact that the conventional test only measures the effective porosity. Still observing the results of the tests, it was verified that the porosity may present an inversely proportional relation with the tortuosity. The resistivity showed a strong relationship with the type of rock, where calcareous samples have higher resistivity than dolomite samples. The pore connectivity of a rock can be determinant in the influence of the porosity on the resistivity of this rock, since isolated pores do not have great influence on the electrical conductivity of a rock. When assessing the wettability, seven water-wettable samples, three with neutral or intermediate wettability, and six preferentially oil-wettable were identified. The wettability of the samples was directly related to the basins that were located.

January 2003 (has links)
The surface tension of solutions with mineral and vegetable oils was estimated by the mass of drops formed in the extremity of a burette. The stability of the emulsion and the foam volume were evaluated after shaking the water spray solutions with the oils in concentrations of 0.25% and 1% in a mechanical agitator. The Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) was used for the ultra-structural analysis of the leaf surfaces of Glycine max, Commelina benghalensis, Euphorbia heterophylla and Ipomoea grandifolia, after having sprayed only with the herbicide Classic or associated to the mineral oil Assist. The wettability was obtained by the analysis of photographic images of the deposition of a drop of 0.5 μL of water spray solutions with only herbicides (Ally, Basagran 600, Classic, Doble, Select 240 CE, Gesaprim 500, Gesaprim GrDA and Primóleo) or associated with the oil Assist or Natur'l Óleo, on the leaf surfaces of soy, corn, rice and weeds in stereomicroscopy. The deposit of the spray solutions with only herbicides (Ally, Basagran 600, Doble and Select 240 CE) or associated with Assist and Natur'l Óleo on different plants was determined by use a dye tracer by spectrophotometry. The mineral oils: Iharol, Assist, Mineral Oil and Dytrol; and the vegetable oils: Veget Oil, Natur'l Óleo, Agrex'oil Vegetal and Crop Oil were effective in reduction of surface tension. Emulsions with mineral oils produce more foam than those with vegetable oils after shaking, in concentrations of 0.25 and 1%. Mineral oil Iharol presented more foam than the other tested oils after shaking... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

No. of bitstreams: 1 Andre_sem_Cap234567.pdf: 796852 bytes, checksum: ae985c95250c45acc8aaa9d33c06b2bb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-09-04 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico / With the increasing industrialization of the planet caused by globalization, it has become increasingly common to search for highly resistant and durable materials for many diverse branches of activities. Thus, production and demand for materials that meet these requirements have constantly increased with time. In view of this, stainless steel is presented as one of the materials which are suitable applications, due to many features that are interesting for several segments of the industry. Concerns of oil companies over heavy oil reservoirs have grown steadily for the last decades. Rheological properties of these oils impair their transport in conventional flow systems. This problem has created the need to develop technologies to improve flow and transport, reducing operation costs so as to enable oil production in the reservoir. Therefore, surfactant-based chemical systems are proposed to optimize transport conditions, effected by reduction of interfacial tensions, thereby enhancing the flow of oil in ducts and reducing load losses by friction. In order to examine such interactions, a study on the wettability of metallic surfaces has been undertaken, represented by measuring of contact angle of surfactant solutions onto flat plates of 304 stainless steel. Aqueous solutions of KCl, surfactants and mixtures of surfactants, with linear and aromatic hydrocarbon chain and ethoxylation degrees ranging between 20 to 100, have been tested. The wettability was assessed by means of a DSA 100 kr?ss goniometer. The influence of roughness on the wettability was also investigated by machining and polished the stainless steel plates with sandpapers of references ranging between 100 of 1200. The results showed that sanding and polishing plates result in decrease of wettability. As for the solutions, they have provided better wettability of the stainless steel than the KCl solutions tested. It was also been concluded that surfactant mixtures is an option to be considered, since they promote interactions that generate satisfactory contact angles for a good wettability on the stainless steel plate. Another conclusion refers to the influence of the ethoxylation degree of the nonionic surfactant molecules on wettability. It has been observed that contact angles decrease with decreasing ethoxylation degrees. This leads us to conclude that molecules with higher ethoxylation degree, being more hydrophobic, decrease the interaction of water with the ducts, thereby reducing friction and improving the flow / Com o crescente aumento da industrializa??o, provocado pela globaliza??o do planeta, tornou-se cada vez mais comum a busca por materiais de alta resist?ncia e durabilidade para os mais diversificados ramos de atividades.

Palmer Vicente Pulla Huillca 03 December 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study was to characterize the surface properties of gelatin-based films. For which, films were produced as following: gelatin plasticized with glycerol (gelatin: 5 g/100 g SFF; glycerol: 30 g/100 g of gelatin), gelatin reinforced with montmorillonite (gelatin: 5 g/100 g SFF; glycerol: 30 g/100 of gelatin; montmorillonite: 5 g/100 g of gelatin), and gelatin plasticized with acetyltributyl citrate (gelatin: 5 g/100 g SFF; acetyltributyl citrate: 50 g/100 of gelatin, soy lecithin: 60 g/100 g acetyltributyl citrate; ethanol: 20 g/100 g SFF). The films were produced by using an automatic film applicator \"Spreading\". Then, the films were tested for determining thickness, humidity and optical property (gloss, color and opacity). Also the microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM); in the images obtained by SEM it was applied image analysis using Image J program, to get the value of the fractal dimension (FD). After, the surface properties of contact angle (CA), wettability or spreading coefficient (Cs) and surface free energy (SFE) were characterized by measuring the contact angle by the method of the sessile drop (water: 5 µL, 1-Bromonaphthalene: 3 µL). For the calculation of the ELS, it was also applied the method of Owens-Wendt. These characterizations were made on both sides of the film (air side and plate side). The nature of the G/ATB film influenced the moisture and optical properties, while the films of G and G/MMT showed similar values. With regard to microstructure and roughness, the G film presented a more homogeneous and smooth surface, contrary to that was observed in films of G/MMT, who presented the highest roughness followed by G/ATB film. It was observed that there was a relationship between the roughness values and DF. According to the value of the CA, the three films had a hydrophobic character, because their values were above 65° (on both sides of the film), in the following order: G/MMT > G > G/ATB; the Cs followed the same trend. It should be also mentioned that a significant correlation between the values of CA and the roughness was found. According to the values of CA, Cs and SFE (specifically the polar component), the films of G/ATB had the lowest hydrophobicity, because had lower CA values and higher Cs values, as compared to the other two films. The values of the polar component of the film G/ATB were higher, which explains better the less hydrophobic character of this film. It can be concluded that the gelatin-based films produced in this work have hydrophobic properties (CA>65°), being the film G/MMT which showed better hydrophobic characteristics.
