Dynamique et transport au voisinage d'une transition de phase quantique en dimension deux / Dynamics and transport in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition in dimension two

Rose, Félix 19 September 2017 (has links)
We study the relativistic O (N) model, a quantum generalization of the φ⁴ theory used in statistical physics to study some phase transitions. This model describes quantum phase transitions such as the Mott insulator-superluid transition in boson gases trapped in optical latices or the paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition in magnets. In two space dimensions, these systems exhibit strong correlations near the transition. We study them using the nonperturbative renormalization group, an implementation of Wilson’s renormalization group. We focus on the universal properties in the vicinity of the zero-temperature quantum phase transition. We determine the universal scaling functions which define the thermodynamics and we show that these functions are related to those describing the critical Casimir forces in a three-dimensional system. Then, we study the excitation spectrum in the zero-temperature ordered phase. For N = 2 and 3, we establish the existence of an amplitude mode, also called “Higgs mode” by analogy with the Higgs mechanism in high-energy physics. For N = 1, we show the existence of a bound state at dimensions close to three. Finally, we compute the frequency-dependent conductivity at zero temperature and confirm its universal character, in particular at the transition. We prove that one of the components of the conductivity tensor in the ordered phase is a “superuniversal” quantity depending neither on the distance to the critical point nor on N.

The writer Wilson Bueno (1949 - 2010) can be considered a reference in Brazilian literary production of the last three decades. All of his literary legacy can be characterized as a crossing on the borders of genres and experimental language, and has in his Mar paraguayo (1992) one of the main representatives of this traffic across borders. Thus, the hypothesis is that both the speech of the protagonist and the whole structure of the novel point to a hybridism of genres and towards the border, understood as a point to which the limits converge and get confused. This hypothesis is confirmed and reflects the process of artistic creation which, in turn, is not unheard of in terms of the paths that have been chosen for the construction of this novel, but it reflects something of a trend and thus establishes meaningful dialogues with other works in a constant disruption and re- reading of literary and cultural tradition. Its implementations and features in elementary and middle school narrow in divisibility principals, greatest common factor (GCF) and Euclidean algorithm. All presented in a plain and timid way. Nevertheless, number theory is a vast field in Mathematics, tightly related to algebra results. It consists of powerful tools to the resolutions of problems such as: Olympics, properties display and indirect implementations in other sciences. In this paper, it will be presented in a fair and concise, the most fundamental outcome related to number theory which do not need further studies to be understood. One familiarity with the properties of integers, the aspects of divisibility seen in elementary and middle school and notions of mathematical proof are sufficient to the knowledge of the main idea of this paper. The major results presented were: Euclidean algorithm, fundamental theorem of arithmetic, Fermat, Wilson and Euler’s theorem and Euler’s totient function . During demos, it will be presented exercises that exemplifies theory. Besides, there are 2 chapters concerning the resolution of Olympics problems, with the intentions to explore, in a smart way, the concepts presented during theory.

Negotiating a Punctuated Landscape: A Study of Asyndetic Translation Based on Relevance Theory

Masson, Renée January 2018 (has links)
Little thought has been given to asyndeton in modern texts, including the translated text. In fact, if manuals on French-to-English translation even mention this troublesome case of punctuation, they almost certainly warn the student translator against replicating it in English, even in literary translation. Writing norms would forbid it, they warn. It would be taken as merely a sloppy case of comma use. Although asyndeton is typically considered a faux pas in English, replicating it may not always be a mistake. Inspired by Québécoise author Catherine Harton’s Traité des peaux (an especially asyndetic collection of short stories published in 2015), this thesis aims to study how asyndeton may be successfully translated from French into English in literary texts. To do so, it adopts Sperber and Wilson’s relevance theory, noting how this theory not only accounts for poetic effects but also provides a principle that can guide translators as they seek to replicate these effects. This thesis then uses relevance theory to analyze cases of asyndeton drawn from three stories in Harton’s collection. The study concludes that there are at least six cases where asyndeton may be effectively translated as asyndeton in literary texts.

Analýza metod vyrovnání výnosových křivek / Analysis of methods for constructing yield curves

Matějka, Martin January 2012 (has links)
The thesis is focused on finding the most appropriate method for constructing the yield curve which will meet the criteria of Solvency II and also the selected evaluation criteria. An overview of advantages of each method is obtained by comparing these methods. Yield curves are constructed using the Czech interest rate swap data from 2007 to 2013. The selection of the evaluated methods respects their public availability and their practical application in life insurance or central banks. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part describes the theoretical background which is necessary to understand the examined issues. In the second part the analysis of selected methods was carried out with detailed evaluation.

O mravencích a lidech. Myrmekologické inspirace antropologie na příkladě V. J. A. Nováka (1919-1997) / Of ants and men. Myrmecological inspirations of anthropology in the work of V. J. A. Novák (1919-1997)

Hampl, Petr January 2010 (has links)
The work presents life and work of Vladimir Jan Amos Novak, it shows his main thoughts unified by the principle of sociogenesis and points at its inspiration in older traditions of german and russian biology. It also concerns his anthropology as related to the principle of sociogenesis and shows some peculiar Novak's contributions, mainly his opinions on progessive neotenization of man and evolutionary tedency for association. It grasps the principle of sociogenesis as a biological and also a political concept and therefore shows its very political consequences presented mainly on his social thoughts. The work also deals with the relations between eastern and western science on Novák's efforts to unify all sciences under one universal evolutionary framework regardless its geographical belonging. Throughout the work is Novak shown in the context of man-animal relations and the principle of sociogenesis as arising from myrmecological studies. There are therefore presented anthropological works of three important myrmecologists A. Forel, W.M. Wheeler and E.O. Wilson as inspired in the study of ants.

Confidence Intervals for a Ratio of Binomial Proportions Based on Paired Data

Bonett, Douglas, Price, Robert M. 15 September 2006 (has links)
Four interval estimation methods for the ratio of marginal binomial proportions are compared in terms of expected interval width and exact coverage probability. Two new methods are proposed that are based on combining two Wilson score intervals. The new methods are easy to compute and perform as well or better than the method recently proposed by Nam and Blackwelder. Two sample size formulas are proposed to approximate the sample size required to achieve an interval estimate with desired confidence level and width.

A Portrayal of Gender and a Description of Gender Roles in Selected American Modern and Postmodern Plays.

Copenhaver, Bonny Ball 04 May 2002 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to describe how gender was portrayed and to determine how gender roles were depicted and defined in a selection of Modern and Postmodern American plays. This study was based on the symbolic interaction theory of gender that suggests that social roles are learned over time and are subject to constant reinforcement. The significance of this study was derived from the broad topic of gender because gender issues are relevant to a variety of fields and exploring the effects of gender in one field contributes to the understanding of gender in another field. The plays in this study were Votes for Women, Robins; Trifles, Glaspell; Our Town, Wilder; Moon for the Misbegotten, O'Neill; The Glass Menagerie, Williams; Death of a Salesman, Miller; A Raisin in the Sun, Hansberry; Funnyhouse of a Negro, Kennedy; Uncommon Women and Others, Wasserstein; Fefu and Her Friends, Fornes; spell #7, Shange; Fool for Love, Shepard; Fences, Wilson; Oleanna, Mamet; and How I Learned to Drive, Vogel. Two of the study's research questions explored the types of gender roles and behaviors that the characters presented. Two questions focused on considering if the time period or the sex of the playwright were factors in the presentations of gender. Gender behaviors were divided into four categories: Behavior Characteristics, Communication Patterns, Sources of Power, and Physical Appearance. Using narrative analysis techniques, the plays were analyzed for the specific traits in each category. The majority of the characters were assigned traditional gender roles and displayed traditional gender behavior traits. Based their gender roles and behavior in their roles, characters faced limitations that confined their actions and restricted their choices. Characters experienced consequences for their behaviors, and female characters received harsher punishments for deviant behaviors than male characters. Gender portrayal in Modern plays was more in keeping with traditional patterns than in Postmodern plays. Female playwrights presented more diverse roles for female characters and often explored gender as a major theme in their plays. Where applicable, race, in concert with gender, was an additional factor that governed characters' behaviors by further restricting behavior or possible actions.

A Comparative Study of America's Entries into World War I and World War II.

Taylor, Samantha Alisha 09 May 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis studies events that preceded America's entries into the First and Second World Wars to discover similarities and dissimilarities. Comparing America's entries into the World Wars provides an insight into major events that influenced future ones and changed America. Research was conducted from primary sources of Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. In addition, secondary sources were used that study the events preceding America's entries into World War I and World War II. Research was also conducted on public opinion. In World War I, German actions angered Wilson and segments of the American public, persuading Wilson to ask for a declaration of war. While German aggression shaped American opinion in World War II, Japanese action forced the United States to enter the war. In both cases, the tone of aggression that molded the foreign policy of Presidents Wilson and Roosevelt and shaped American public opinion originated from Germany.
