Understanding Institutional Influences on Environmental and Social Responsibility in Family-Run Wineries : A look at US and Hungarian CSR practices

Still, Brandie, Thernesz, Veronika January 2020 (has links)
Purpose – The purpose of the research is to explain how and why the internal and external influences faced by family-run wineries affect their CSR practices and communication through institutional theory and stakeholder theory. Methodology – Ten wineries were analyzed in winemaking regions in Hungary and the US, of which nine semi-structured interviews were undertaken with family members and employees.  The research available implies that family-run businesses within the wine industry are regulated by institutionalism (Brundin & Wigren-Kristoferson, 2013). Therefore, institutional theory is applied to the analysis of the data. The lens of institutional theory uses three pillars, regulatory, normative, and cultural cognitive to identify the external and internal influences on these businesses.  Thematic analysis was utilized to code and analyze the data. In addition, the content of each interviewed winery is examined using thematic analysis. Thematic analysis is also applied to content provided on each winery’s website to back up the data. Findings –In Hungary, the use of sustainable production methods in wineries is part of the winemakers’ personal value system. In the US, wineries have a fierce commitment to the land. In recent years they have worked hard to communicate their sustainability practices. Winegrowers have incorporated modern and old-school practices addressing sustainability issues to meet the expectations of all stakeholders. Through institutional theory, it has been demonstrated that numerous drivers are influencing family-run wineries to implement environmental and social sustainability practices. However, there is a significant difference between these CSR practices and the need to communicate them between Hungary and the US. There is a significant difference between the communication methods of Hungarian and US wineries. In Hungary, there is little communication of sustainability practices, although there is movement towards more communication about sustainability practices since the introduction of the web and social media. The experience, in general, was that instead of communication, the emphasis is put more on living and working according to the principles of sustainability – whether it is environmental, social, or economic. In the US, the communication of CSR is used as a marketing tool to engage and educate their stakeholders, mainly through social media. Research implications –The implications of our research contribute to the knowledge of corporate social responsibility and how institutional influences affect social and environmental responsibility within family-run wineries by bringing the wine industry, family businesses, and CSR together under the analysis of institutional theory. The findings in this paper should be looked upon by family wineries as a resource related to the current communication of social responsibility in the wine industry. Research limitations – A limitation of this research is the lack of personal meetings with interviewees. Due to the COVID-19 lockdowns, the possibility of conducting the interviews face-to-face was not an option. The researchers were challenged to obtain more personal information about the familial, organizational structure without conducting multiple interviews, building trust and rapport.

Stavba v krajině - Winery / Architecture in Landscape – Winery

Nováková, Natalie January 2017 (has links)
Urbanist concept in the cadastral area of Strachotín village is based on spiral inspirations. The village is located on the banks of Novomlýnské nádrže and offers a wonderful view of Pálava. Therefore, for me, the most powerful motif has become the nature, which is cyclical, but does not repulse. The spiral has been applied to the driveway to a selected location offering the best view and communicating with the village. The function of the winery was supplemented by a small recreational riding complex. The functional solution offers the possibility of visiting, family recreation or organizing corporate events and presentations. When embedding functions, it was considered the most convenient mode of transport that would capture that function. This was further refined by the creation of public spaces that link to the various sites and the whole area. The actual mass solution of objects is inspired by Pálava itself, which is hard but delicate. For my most important objects, it "crystallized" and encouraged them to cover the greenery with the least important visitor.

Stavba v krajině – Winery / Architecture in Landscape – Winery

Koťová, Marie January 2017 (has links)
The solved territory is situated in the picturesque part of the South Moravian Region in the village of Strachotín. The local environment invites you to create a pleasant holiday space. That's why I designed a winery object with a holiday accommodation in the vineyard and a water museum with a spiritual space inside the water reservoir. The built-up area is designed on two axis lines. The first axis is the connecting line of the historic wine village of Pouzdřany, with the highest peak of the Pavlovské vrchy. There is a vineyard object on this axis. The second axis comes from the neighboring wine village of Popice and heads to the Nove Mlýny water reservoir in the center and to the church of St. Linharta, which protrudes from the water as a remnant of the flooded village of Mušov. That is why a water museum and a spiritual place to think are on the axis. At the intersection of these two axes there is a lookout tower and a main parking area for visitors.

ResPublica/Civitas Socialis – Strachotín, l. p. 2017 / ResPublica/Civitas Socialis - Strachotín

Ildža, Lukáš January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the project is to design a public building in the place, where phenomena of Pálava mountains, reflecting water surface and wine tradition meet. It is right in the area of Strachotín village. Project is trying to harness the power of these qualities to create a special attractive house. But also, the house is showing the viewer new perspective on these entities, which would not be seen without it. The location and concept of this wine house is strengthening the link between village and Pálava reflected in water. Therefore, the main part of interior is oriented exactly on the axis between these two poles. Secondarily, house contains the small museum of local history. In terms of technical aspects, we are dealing with the floating house, which is not affecting the building of dyke in no way.

Vinařství Altenberk / Winery Altenberk

Palásková, Zita Unknown Date (has links)
The subject of the master´s thesis is design documentation for the construction of a winery on the outskirts of the town Hustopeče. The building is designed on a slope between the vineyards and consists of two parts that are connected under the terrain. Under the terrain there is also an underlying part of the building so as not to disturb the landscape of the vineyards. The first part is used for wine production and the second part is used for the presentation of wine. The building is designed from in situ reinforced concrete with load-bearing walls and internal columns. The basement walls are made of waterproof concrete. The above-ground perimeter walls consist of sandwich structures consisting of a load-bearing wall, thermal insulation and a partition made of architectural concrete. At the same time, architectural concrete dominates the entire building. The foundation is designed on piles due to the subsoil. Horizontal structures are solved as locally supported slabs and the roofing is solved by two vegetation roofs and one load-bearing roof.

Indoor Air Monitoring of Ethanol and Benzene in a Pilot Winery Using Active Sampling

Kaneda, Andrew I 01 March 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Acute indoor concentrations of benzene and ethanol were evaluated in the California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo’s pilot winery workroom. Air samples were collected during four different wine-making activities: fermentation, fermentation with Brix content testing, post-alcoholic fermentation pressing, and storage/finishing. Average workroom benzene concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.12 mg/m3. Ethanol concentrations in the winery workroom varied with the activity, ranging from 0.9 to 12 mg/m3. Pressing and fermentation with Brix content testing both led to higher indoor ethanol concentrations than fermentation without Brix content testing and storage/finishing. Tracer gas decay air exchange tests were conducted to determine the air exchange rate of the winery workroom. A single-space mass-balance model was used to estimate the air exchange rate for the entire workroom. The calculated air exchange rates were correlated with wind speeds and wind direction to create a linear model estimating air exchange rates based on wind speed. These air exchange rates and the indoor concentrations of ethanol were used with the single-space mass-balance model to calculate an ethanol emission rate for each activity. Total estimated ethanol emissions for the four activities were 3.1 lbs. ethanol per 1000 gallons of wine produced.

Wine tourism experiences in New Zealand: an exploratory study

Alonso, Abel Duarte January 2005 (has links)
Recently, New Zealand's wine industry has made remarkable progress. For example, the number of hectares planted in grapes increased from 4,880 in 1990, to 15,479 in 2003, and the number of wineries increased from 175 in 1993 to 421 in 2003. Projections for 2006 indicate that the growth of wine exports should nearly double from 2003, with expected revenues of $NZ 736 million. However, despite this growth, little has been reported about developments in New Zealand's wine tourism industry, or about consumer perceptions of the winery experience in the form of published academic research. The limited amount of information, particularly from the visitors' points of view, may not only be preventing winery operators and the wine industry in general from having a better understanding of their visitors, but also from addressing the needs of different visitor segments. Resulting implications for winery operators may include forgone business opportunities, and customers not fully benefiting in terms of product and service quality. Recent studies indicate that this last element is particularly important in wine tourism. This study reports the results of an exploratory research project conducted in New Zealand wineries that investigated aspects of the winery experience, including wine involvement, satisfaction with the winery experience, and visitor demographics. An index to measure involvement with wine, the wine involvement index (WIX), was developed and utilised to investigate whether wine involvement had an impact on winery visitors' behaviour. Data were collected from winery visitors via questionnaires distributed in a sample of wineries in different wine regions of New Zealand. A total of 609 usable responses were obtained (24.8% response rate). The results indicate a number of differences between the independent, dependent, and moderating variables. For example, it was found that age, whether visitors are domestic or international, and different levels of wine involvement appear to have a clear impact on winery expenditure. In addition, the WIX was confirmed to be a useful tool, for example, by identifying potential relationships between different groups of winery visitors. The results add new knowledge to the area of wine tourism, and offer useful information for wineries and the wine tourism industry. This information includes the potential commercial significance of some visitor groups. An additional contribution of this study is the 'complete wine tourism research model.' This concept presents an alternative to existing wine tourism models, and points out attributes and dimensions that play a major role in the winery experience.

Indicação geográfica como estratégia de gestão do agronegócio

Silva, Liária Nunes da 22 September 2016 (has links)
The increasing competitiveness seen in various activities of the primary sector requires organizations and producers associations’ capacity of planning, elaboration and execution of strategies capable to promote the reach of the goal and objective organizational. From the understanding that this competitive scenario raises the Geographical Indication as a strategy of differentiation, this study sought to map the potential conditions of management and planning of fruit production in Marrecas Settlement in accordance with the request of Geographical Indication for the Grape. The field research was realized in a grape plantation area of variety Benitaka, to analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil, as well as data collection of meteorological parameters that can affect the quality of grapes, such as temperature and relative humidity of air, rainfall and the total insolation, identified from the visit to the Conventional Meteorologic Station in São João do Piauí and supplemented by information on the website of the National Institute of Meteorology. From the point of view of management, visits were made to Marrecas Settlement to meet their organizational structures and identify the role of associations in the management and marketing of production, seeking to realize the managerial capability of future Geographical Indication for grape production. The information obtained showed that the interaction between the edaphoclimatic factors of São João do Piauí and the availability of hydrous resources for irrigation provide excellent conditions for production of different grapes, presenting certification potential for Geographical Indication, either Indication of Origin or Denomination of Origin. Furthermore, it was found that the associativism represents a strategy of effective cooperation to improve the concurrence conditions of the settlers producers, such as the Association of Producers with irrigation of the Marrecas Settlement, which develops several activities within viticulture, as elaboration of the annual planning of production, marketing and management of financial resources. The capacity planning, organization and leadership of the Association of Producers with irrigation of the Marrecas Settlement, coupled with a lean and efficient organizational structure, indicate the predisposition of association to manage the possible Geographical Indication of grape production.
