Human Resource Policies in the Workplace: A Comparative Analysis on the Perception of Female African Immigrants and Female U.S. Born WorkersAbbah, Blessing 29 September 2014 (has links)
A qualitative research design served to explore the effects of human resource policies in the workplace with narratives developed from a group of 15 women comprising African immigrants and their U.S counterparts in Oregon through analysis and interpretation of data from one-on-one interviews. The findings suggest that human resource policies in the workplace greatly impact women's work experiences.
This study explored major factors such as pay difference, language and communication proficiency, cultural/religious differences, skill transferability and employment skill prejudice and discrimination and working conditions. Despite women's qualifications, competence and belief that equal skill mean equal opportunity, the strictures of human resource work policies makes it harder to excel in the workplace. Work experience and policies in Africa and America differ, and life circumstances of African women are distinctively different from those of their U.S counterparts. The analysis concludes with recommendations and implication for employers, managers, and human resource personnel.

Firm Social Network, Information Transfer and Information EnvironmentUnknown Date (has links)
I investigate whether or not a firm’s social network size (also known as social
capital) impacts the quality of its information environment. Following social capital
theory, I posit three potential channels that help bring an informational advantage to wellconnected
firms. First, well-connected firms are likely to have timely access to a broader
set of information that affords them the opportunity to disclose this information. Second,
a social network fosters trust among social peers, which promotes the transfer of more
accurate information within that network. Third, well-connected executives and directors
have greater reputational capital at stake, which may encourage them to provide accurate
information to the market. I provide evidence that well-connected firms have higher
quality information environments.
I further document that the beneficial impact of the firm’s social network size on
the quality of the firm’s information environment is higher for complex firms. I also find that the beneficial effect of the firm’s social ties on the quality of the firm’s information
environment is greater when the firm’s connections are in the same industry or are top
executives or are industry leaders or are financiers in the capital markets.
My study extends existing social network literature by investigating whether
firm’s social connections to outside executives and directors impact the quality of the
firm’s information environment. My paper focuses on the networking skills of the
executives and directors and extends the literature on how executives’ and directors’
personal characteristics are important. Additionally, I respond to the call by Engelberg et
al. (2013) to identify the mechanism by which a CEO’s network creates value to the firm
and well-connected CEOs get paid higher compensation. This study also contributes to a
growing debate in social network literature between social capital theory and agency
theory. Finally, my study is important to the regulators and standard setters as they can
provide further evidence on the impact of non-financial information on the information
quality surrounding the firm. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Hot och våld på socialtjänsten : En kvalitativ studie om hur socialsekreterares fritid- och arbetssituation påverkas av hot och våld i arbetetMelander, Maria, Malm, Johan January 2018 (has links)
This study aims to answer how social workers conceptualize the risk of violence in their workplace. The data consisted of seven interviews with social workers working in financial aid departments in or around the Stockholm area. Semi structured interviews were used to gather the data which then were processed with a fenomenographic method. The data was analyzed with Lazarus and Folkman theory on coping and Antonovsky’s generalized resistance resources. The findings in this study shows that all respondents have experienced threats or violence in some form in their work. They use strategies to cope with both the situation at hand and the emotions connected to the event. The respondents were affected in their spare time to some extent. It will be argued that there is a form of duality between to not accept violence and at the same time have understanding for client’s vulnerable situation and for the effect social workers decision-making have on the client’s lives.

Lärare och föräldrar : En intervjustudie om relationen mellan lärare och föräldrar / Teachers and parents : An interview study about the relationshipHenriksson, Linn, Svensson, Linnea January 2019 (has links)
The school is in constant development. Parents are increasingly engaged in their childrens' school performance. New demands emerge on the relationship between teachers and parents. And this also affects the teachers' mental work environment. This study therefore aims to examine teachers' perception of their relationship with the parents. Partly how they perceive the relationship and partly how the teachers perceive that their mental work environment is affected by this relationship. Seven active teachers have been interviewed, four who work in the upper secondary school and three who work in high school. The interviews were semi-structured and the material was compiled through a content analysis. The study showed, among other things, that the teachers' perception of the meeting with parents was mostly positive and unproblematic. The study also discuss situations when this was not the case. There was a certain difference between high school and upper secondary school teachers. The high school teachers in the study both have and feel that they have more demands on parenting. What was important for good mental work environment were good parent relationships and support from colleagues at work. Common to many of the informants was that there was a desire for even more contact with parents', in order to favor the child's schooling and performance. Keywords: teachers, parents, school, mental work environment

Lean i byggproduktion med fokus på arbetsmiljö / Lean in a construction project with a work-environmental focusGlad, Calle, Bäck, Elinor January 2019 (has links)
Purpose: As of today, the knowledge of lean production, and its development into the construction industry, lean construction, has been well described in most of the necessary aspects. In what way lean could affect the work environment in a construction project, be it good or bad, has to date not been thoroughly documented. In Sweden, lean has been mildly tested in the construction industry but the results concerning the effect it has on the work environment is yet to be found in the literature. Lean itself is a strategy for manufacturing processes. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of lean itself and how it, theoretically, could affect the work environment at construction site. Method: To achieve the purpose, documents from the participating company concerning work environment has been analysed in order to visualize what routines the company currently follows. In addition to this, seven interviews were conducted with employees of the company. The persons participating in the interviews were asked about how well they think the work is organized on the construction site right now and furthermore about their thoughts of lean-concept that had been produced, based on the theoretical framework. Findings: Based on the theoretical framework and findings in the empirical data that has been collected, a lean-concept was developed and refined. The concept includes what routines and what documents that are vital when implicating lean in an effective way, and also what needs to be considered in order not to impede the work environment at the construction site. Implications: Implicating a well-structured lean-concept in the construction process of a project would, theoretically, most definitely improve effectiveness within the project. It could also improve the work environment of the project, considering the risk awareness and the easier waste-control that the concept could provide. However, it could also make it worse through the elimination of variance and monotonous work tasks that are needed to improve the effectiveness. Limitations: The most important limitations that the study has had is the fact of it only being a theoretical implication of a lean concept, not a practical case study of the sort. This is due to the defined and limited time that project has had. In addition, the study has also had to limit its’ research to the frame supplement phase of the construction project. This is because of the fact that the work with the theoretical framework and the empirical study would have been too overwhelming, had the study considered the entire production phase of a construction project.
