Eco Yoga Therapy for Mental Health Related to the COVID-19 Pandemic

Stein, Karyn 01 April 2022 (has links)
Recently the magnitude of the mental health crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic has been emerging. Reports of anxiety or depression related to COVID-19 have been on the rise globally. Individuals have been living in a perpetual state of the unknown for over two years. Fear of the virus, sickness of oneself or family/friends and social isolation have taken a toll. According to the WHO, anxiety and depression have gone up 25% in the last year (2022). The effects of a rising mental health crisis will be drastic on top of the deaths and sickness related to COVID-19. While governments have recognized the importance of funding mental health services, the follow through is often lacking or the potential solutions are heavily geared towards pharmaceutical medications. This thesis is two pronged, including a review of the relevant literature with regard to COVID-19, mental health and yoga, as well as the findings of a six-week Eco-Yoga Therapy Program for Mental Health related to COVID-19. case report argues for an integrative solution focused on promoting health and wellness including both yoga therapy and nature or eco therapy. A six week program was designed for those experiencing anxiety or depression related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The thesis reports on the findings of the case series of three post-Covid females of different nationalities living in Spain, Belize and New Zealand, with co-morbidities including high blood pressure (HBP), hypothyroidism and post-partum. The clients successfully completed an integrative program based on yoga and eco-therapy. It involved a series of pranayama (breathing), asana (physical postures), dinacharya (lifestyle choices) and dhyana (meditation) techniques, along with practices tailored to each client based on their specific needs. Clients reported improvements in anxiety levels and stress management due to the practices, in particular the asana (physical postures) and pranayama (breathing practices). They felt an increased ability to calm the mind while being in nature. The approach to wellness focuses on our bodies own innate capacity to heal, as opposed to focusing on medical solutions to the virus and treatment once sickness has already manifested. Again, the emphasis is on strengthening the bodies natural immunity through yoga and nature, which reduces inflammation and stimulates the vagus nerve, both of which have been found to improve mental health and decrease the chances of disease.

Creativity and the Spiritual Path

Wherritt, Laine 01 April 2022 (has links)
This paper looks at the correlation between creativity and the spiritual path by comparing contemplative practices to creative ones. By looking at sitting meditation as it’s practiced in the Buddhist lineage and paralleling it with creative writing practices, we can see how each cultivates a similar mental space. This paper explores key factors that differentiate each practice and its desired goal, while also looking at things that make them similar. Each practice uses certain parts of the brain resulting in corresponding experiences happening at varying stages. I discuss the lead into meditative states by incorporating both ancient and modern perspectives. The discussion around meditative and creative states is further contextualized with an analysis of flow states, and cultural impacts. Both practices transmute experience into something else. In creativity this takes the full scope of human emotion and experience and turns it into art. In meditation this is done through assessing and releasing karmic accretions. I also discuss the creative impulse and how it mirrors the meditator’s desire for liberation. By contextualizing both practices I argue, creativity is a spiritual process and spirituality in turn requires a certain level of creativity.

Bromander, Frida January 2020 (has links)
MediYoga som behandling vid migrän : En pilotstudie / Medical yoga as a treatment for migraine : A pilot study

Garli, Jane January 2020 (has links)
Introduction:  Migraine is a chronic neurological disease, partly hereditery. One non-pharmacological alternative treatment is yoga, whose effects have been investigated in a few scientific studies. No one has in a scientific studie investigated the effect of medical yoga for patients with migraine. Aim: The primary aim was to investigate if medical yoga in combination with pharmcological treatment could have an effect on headache frequency, intensity, and/or duration for patients with episodic and chronic migraine. Method: A pilot study, with SSED-design, with seven patients. Everyone had different long baselines before intervention. The intervention was a period of sex weeks of medical yoga. A headache diary with frequency, intensity and duration was conducted throughout the study period. Results: For two patients (patient two and six) the number of days with migraine reduced, effectsize (ES) 0,50 and 0,39 respectively. For four the freguence increased. The experience of pain decreased for two patients, increased for three and unchanged for one. The duration of migraine is reduced for one patient (patient seven) and increased for five. Some are improved in secondary outcome measures. Conclusion: At present, the intervention can possibly be used for patients who are similar to the individuals who had effect of the intervention and are interested in medical yoga as a self-care, but further studies are needed, as well as larger studies to be able to generalize to the migraine group. Några förbättrades i sekundära utfallsmått.

Emerging Diabetes Pandemic in India: A Case Study for an Integrative Approach

Chaudhry, Chhaya Sanjeev 01 January 2014 (has links)
Every day, India sees the addition of 5,000 new cases of diabetes to its current diabetic population of 65 million people. This number is projected to cross the 100 million mark in 15 years. The emerging pandemic scale of diabetes growth is straining India's already-overburdened public healthcare resources. India is home to several well-established native and adapted foreign traditions of medicine that are widely practiced. These traditions include Ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha, and homeopathy. The modern and traditional medicine approaches are extensively used as independent systems. The purpose of this qualitative research case study was to evaluate the use of an integrative approach to address the multiple challenges posed by diabetes in India. The research design for the case study was based on the theoretical framework of participatory action research. The research questions evaluated how the modern and traditional medicine systems can be jointly used to contain the spread, scale, and immensity of diabetes in India and examined the barriers and challenges in combining various systems of medicine. Data were collected from interviews with 30 modern and traditional medical practitioners and 6 policy makers identified through a stratified purposeful sampling process. The transcribed data were coded thematically and objectively analyzed. The trustworthiness of interpretations was bolstered with triangulation through records from notes and observations. In evaluating the feasibility of a synergistic and integrative approach, the study filled a gap in scholarly literature. The study contributes to social change by adding to the existing body of knowledge available to physicians and patients in preventing and containing the diabetes pandemic.

Silveira, Bruno Guaraldo de Paula January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: São Paulo’s reading public in the beginning of the XX century had at their disposal a significant offer of books about yoga. The Library and Publishing House “O Pensamento”, founded in 1907, played a major role in the mediation, traduction, edition and distribution of theses books, being the only specialized in the branch of yoga in São Paulo, starting what can be understood as an yoga editorial market in Brazil. The Publishing House “O Pensamento” already had, in 1920, an extensive catalogue of spiritualism books, about magic and yoga, a national distribution network through correspondence, yearly production of 25.000 books, not to mention a magazine, O Pensamento, which is being published initerruptly since 1907. What are the first books of yoga in São Paulo? Who were their authors and translators? How was the distribution? How did they fit in the editorial market context at the time? The objective of this work is to demonstrate how was the beginning and consolidation of this branch of the editorial market, starting from the analysis of historical sources. Based on “Communications’ Circuit”, methodology offered by Robert Darnton, the hypothesis that will be defended is that books about yoga arised and consolidated in editorial market through the efforts of Antonio Olívio Rodrigues and associates in the production, distribution and creation of a reading public of their own, in a very eclectic and cosmopolite São Paulo, during the Belle Époque, where a critical economical and... The Power of Yoga: Investigating the Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of a Prenatal Yoga Intervention to Prevent Excessive Gestational Weight Gain

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: Excessive gestational weight gain (EGWG) affects 50% of US pregnant women and may be an important contributor to obesity in both the mother and child. Novel strategies to prevent EGWG are needed to reduce the risk of adverse health outcomes for the mother and child. This dissertation presents three manuscripts that 1) propose a novel model to explain how prenatal yoga may prevent EGWG through behavioral, psychological/emotional, and physical factors, 2) test the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a prenatal yoga intervention to prevent EGWG compared to a pregnancy education comparison group, and 3) qualitatively investigate pregnant women’s experiences participating in a prenatal yoga intervention to prevent EGWG. In manuscript two, 49 women were recruited and randomized to a 12-week prenatal yoga intervention (n=23) or a time-matched pregnancy education comparison group (n=26). A satisfaction survey was administered at post-intervention to assess feasibility outcomes (e.g., acceptability, demand). Mindfulness, emotion regulation, self-awareness, sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and perceived stress were assessed at baseline and post-intervention (12-weeks) and GWG was assessed weekly. Linear mixed models were used to analyze pre-post changes in primary (i.e., GWG during pregnancy) and secondary (i.e., mindfulness, emotion regulation, self-awareness, sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and stress) outcomes. In manuscript three, interviews were conducted with pregnant women who participated in the prenatal yoga intervention (n=13). Interview responses were summarized using an inductive approach to thematic analysis. Findings in manuscript two suggest that prenatal yoga was a feasible method to prevent EGWG with high enjoyment and satisfaction reported among participants. The average number of prenatal yoga sessions attended was 8.84 (SD = 3.85). There was no significant group differences on the rate of GWG or total GWG throughout the intervention and a significant group x time interaction effect for stress (p=.03). In manuscript three, twelve themes were identified among the data and were organized into the following categories (three themes each): 1) experiences of prenatal yoga, 2) prenatal yoga and weight, 3) barriers to prenatal yoga, and 4) facilitators of prenatal yoga. This initial evidence suggests that prenatal yoga has potential as a strategy to prevent EGWG in pregnant women. / Dissertation/Thesis / Embargo form / Doctoral Dissertation Exercise and Nutritional Sciences 2019
