January 1997 (has links)
Criticism. Inspired by Hermann Broch's essay Creation litteraire et connaissance and Maurice Blanchot's L'Espace litteraire, $ underline {Cr 'eation, 'ethique et v 'erit 'e}$, Broch et Blanchot questions both the possibility and the necessity for a writer to maneuver within the realm of Fiction (i.e. inevitably the realm of Lies), while following an ethical code of Truth. / Fiction. $ underline {En trompe-l'oeil}$ is a novella about Mance Dussault who, after parting from her lover, is compelled to redefine her own identity, by herself and outside of the gaze of the Other. Her quest is complicated by the fact that she is torn between her passions from the past and her current dreams which are luring her into a state of being never experienced before. Furthermore, the veil of novelty could hide a side of reality darker than suspected.

____________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Philosophy and Literature have differences and similarities in their discourses. However, a master point makes the meeting e the debate something inevitable: both are voices of human effort to provoke views and speeches about what seems to escape the immediate capture of the reality. Both have sought for an increasingly close dialogue, presenting issues, propositions and transgressions on human existence despite of their different systematics. This thesis is the result of literary and philosophical research on an important topic for the present but not exclusive of it: the human values. In order to verify if the trilogy The Sleepwalkers, by Hermann Broch, is a super-romance (Überroman), which the theme of degradation of human values pervades the whole structure, serves as an epistemological axis and elucidates the condition of a sleepwalking time, we investigate the writer's life, the times of his, the context that influenced the writing of The Sleepwalkers, the structure of the trilogy in a epistemological and aesthetics way. In the first part we present some approaches on the philosophical and literary fundaments to be taken as references in a systematic reading of the trilogy as well as some contributions on Broch’s engineering of the novel structure. In the second part we express some epistemological and aesthetic perspectives on the trilogy through a résumé of the episodes considering the degradation of values as its episteme. In the third part we take the Epistemology of Romance and Aesthetics in the constitution of The Sleepwalkers, exposing the issue of Serio Ludere method and its application and, finally, the question of the narrator-subject in the setting of the trilogy. The intention of this thesis is to speculate on what appears to be plausible: the possibility of using a novel to help us cognitively in the closest possibility of approximation to the reality.

\"Impaciência do conhecimento\": aproximações aos Sonâmbulos de Hermann Broch / \"Impatience of knowledge\": approximations to The Sleepwalkers by Hermann BrochBonomo, Daniel Reizinger 15 March 2013 (has links)
This research is devoted to Herman Brochs trilogy The sleepwalkers. The focus of our interest lies on the historical and constructive aspects of the novels Pasenow the romantic, Esch the anarchist and Huguenau the realist. The study is divided in two parts. The first one contains a discussion on the literary and historical context, on the authors thought and on theoretical questions about the novel as a genre. In our view, the trilogy offers a unique commentary upon the crisis of the novel around 1930. Moreover, we take Brochs ideas as an ethics of totality and we propose a realist and metaphysical rhetoric as a key device of the text of The sleepwalkers. The second part consists of observations on the narrative composition, in which we analyze the dynamics of similarities and differences among the three titles. Our aim is to provide a framework for the understanding of the trilogys literary place and specificity. Impatience of knowledge in Broch means poetry capable of anticipating science, novel being able to anticipate philosophy.

Intertextualiat als kulturelles Gedachtnis - Exemplifiziert anhand ausgewahlter Stellen der Kapitel "Zerfall der Werte" aus Hermann Brochs "Die Schlafwandler"Ackermann, Clemens, 1985- 06 1900 (has links)
vii, 56 p. This thesis is written in German. / My thesis focuses on the question of how intertextuality can operate as a form of cultural memory. Drawing on the cultural-semiological model of intertextuality developed by Renate Lachmann, my analysis of Hermann Broch's novel <italic>Die Schlafwandler</italic> examines how the incorporation of intertexts enriches and changes the interpretation of a manifest text. I am focusing in particular on Broch's references to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Immanuel Kant in the chapters "Zerfall der Werte" to exemplify how intertextuality operates in this novel. The focus on two specific sources of intertextual references allows me a thorough analysis of the new interpretive dimensions that are created through intertextuality and at the same time the delineation of new perspectives for the further study of intertextuality in relation to Broch's work. / Committee in charge: Prof. Martin Klebes, Chairperson;

Hermann Broch (1886-1951), penseur du dialogue et de l'altérité / Hermann Broch ( 1886-1951 ), thinker of dialogue and alterityGani, Djéhanne 29 November 2013 (has links)
In a context marked by anti-semitism and totalitarianism, Broch develops an anthropology of responsibility that denounces individualism and indifference, both of which represent a danger for humanity and democracy. Broch depicts the crisis of the modern world. However, beyond analysis, his reflections have above all a practical aim. He reveals the common place dangers and follies of humanity in a world deprived of sense and of indifference to others. He proposes a code of ethics in which dialogue with others, as with oneself and one's past, is indispensable for a responsible conscience. Responsibility is at the heart of the human conscience and of the capacity to live together with others. Broch advocates, in fact, an active responsibility that is turned towards others and towards the future. Animal nature is embodied within oneself and leads an internal battle. Human behavior rises out of the “talents and duties of man” because alterity is the risk of humanity, that one could lose one's humanity. The sensitivity towards others, present in every man, therefore constitutes the possibility of losing one's humanity and of descending into animality. This is inscribed in the nature of man. The notions of dialogue and alterity are multidisciplinary : they are at the intersection of literary, historical, philosophical, and psychological questions. They present the whole work of Broch by articulating polysemously different aspects, escaping a binary logic and elucidating his moral and political project.
