[pt] A presente dissertação de mestrado está centrada na análise de três livros de Augusto Abelaira. São analisados Bolor, Quatro Paredes Nuas e O Triunfo da Morte, livros escolhidos por permitirem evidenciar alguns dos procedimentos de escrita deste autor. É feita uma breve contextualização histórica, seguida pela análise de temas, elementos textuais, processos formais e características estruturais recorrentes nas obras estudadas. A dissertação se concentra em tópicos característicos da escrita de Abelaira, como sua retomada de assuntos e temas, a problematização da identidade dos narradores e o atrito entre ficção e realidade. O objetivo é demonstrar que a desconstrução da estrutura narrativa linear nas obras do autor impossibilita a existência de uma interpretação privilegiada. É postulado um paralelo entre a técnica abelairiana de justaposição e as técnicas de montagem cinematográfica descontínuas, evidenciando a lógica estruturante que ambas compartilham. Finalmente, é analisada a relação entre o narrador e os diferentes planos narrativos: os narradores destes livros de Abelaira parecem ser compostos por uma superposição de diferentes vozes, algumas das quais remetem a planos externos à narrativa. A partir da relação de atrito entre ficcional e realidade, investiga-se como Abelaira sistematicamente questiona e evidencia os limites da escrita ficcional. / [en] This dissertation is centered on the analysis of three books by Augusto Abelaira, a Portuguese 20th century writer. Bolor, Quatro Paredes Nuas and O Triunfo da Morte have been chosen because they allow us to highlight some of the narrative procedures typical of this author. A brief historical overview is followed by an analysis of themes, textual elements, formal and structural characteristics recurrent in the author`s work. The dissertation focus on aspects that characterize Abelaira`s writing style, such as his constant use of subjects and themes. Our goal is to demonstrate that the very structure of his narrative precludes the existence of a privileged interpretation of the analyzed work. A parallel is postulated between the writer s technique of juxtaposition and discontinuous cinematographic editing techniques, as both share the same logical structuring. Finally, we analyze the relationship between the narrator and the various narrative plans in order to show that the narrators in these three books by Abelaira are a superposition of different narrative voices that make successive references to extra-fictional events. From the friction between fiction and reality that the narratives seem to present, we systematically investigate how Abelaira questions and highlights the limits of fiction writing.

[pt] A presente dissertação propõe uma leitura do projeto artístico-intelectual de Augusto Abelaira a partir de textos do autor publicados em prefácios de livros, em crônicas e entrevistas publicadas durante a década de 1960 no suplemento semanal Vida artística e literária do Diário de Lisboa. A investigação aborda três pontos principais: as configurações dos papeis de escritor, leitor e crítico literário; as relações entre a arte e política na Europa e em Portugal especialmente, com os neo-realistas e o grupo da Presença; e os possíveis espaços de atuação do intelectual de letras – para apresentar as visões do autor sobre as teorias do romance e o momento político social em que está inserido e para focalizar a atuação de Augusto Abelaira enquanto um intelectual português durante o regime ditatorial fascista. / [en] The present dissertation propose an approach on Augusto Abelaira s artistic-intellectual project from his texts published in prefaces of books, chronicles and interviews published during the 1960 decade in the weekly supplement Vida artistica e literária of Diário de Lisboa. The investigation addresses three main points: the configurations of the writer, reader and literary critic roles; the relationship between art and politics in Europe and especially in Portugal, with the neo-realists and the Presença s group; and the possible spaces for literary intellectual intervention – in order to bring forward the author s views on romances theory and the social political moment in which he is situated and to focalize Augusto Abelaira s performance as a Portuguese Intellectual during the fascist dictatorial regime.

[pt] A fim de compreender o papel do romance moderno e seus atributos durante a década de 60 em Portugal, este estudo visa a analisar criticamente a função da escrita na obra de Augusto Abelaira, autor que pertencia a um grupo de romancistas que procurava desenvolver uma nova maneira de ver a arte, de pensar a Literatura e de renovar a linguagem ficcional. Estes escritores tinham por intento questionar a importância de um experimentalismo da linguagem que criasse novas formas de narrativa, deixando o romance de personagens relegado apenas ao século XIX. Para tanto, o téorico do nouveau roman francês Alain Robbe-Grillet, as teorias da representação discursiva de Mikhail Bakhtin, a genealogia da escrita segundo Jacques Derrida, a estética da criação verbal para Barthes e a teoria do efeito estético de Wolfgang Iser serão postos em diálogo com a ficção de Augusto Abelaira para que possamos formular sentidos para as dimensões do romance português contemporâneo. Sob esta perspectiva, serão também trabalhadas a função do leitor e a importância da escrita no contexto histórico-literário da década de 60 em Portugal. / [en] In order to understand the role of modern novel and its attributes during the 60th decade, this study aims to analyze critically the writing function for an author that belonged to a group of novelists whose objective laid in the field that they should find new ways of thinking about art, literature, and writing. Those writers intended to discuss a kind of experimentalism that would be able to create new text forms, leaving the structure of old novel into the past centuries. In this way, Alain Robbe-Grillet`s theories on the French nouveau roman, Mikhail Bakhtin`s discourse representation, Jacques Derrida`s arguments towards writing will be put into dialogue with the modern Portuguese author Augusto Abelaira. This thesis will also arise analysis towards the reader`s function and the importance of writing in the literary and in the historical context of the 60th decade in Portugal.

Among the guiding concepts in this work are privileged to methodological tools known as the aesthetics of postmodern fragmentation, cultural capital, and the slopes parodic, ironic and fantastic text eluded.

Este estudo analisa a inoperosidade no romance Nem só mas também, de Augusto Abelaira. Deslindamos o conceito agambeniano a partir do encadeamento da dimensão estética ao plano histórico-social, com o objetivo de demonstrar, sobretudo, a relação da obra de arte literária com a realidade. Esta, na obra, é representada com a complexidade da ficção que, ao problematizar a realidade portuguesa do Pós-25 de Abril de 1974, incide, enquanto denúncia e testemunho, sobre uma estrutura social. No que concerne ao nosso recorte teórico, propomos refletir sobre a inoperância da obra ancorados, principalmente, nas reflexões de Giorgio Agamben e na hermenêutica de Paul Ricoeur, mas, ao longo dos capítulos desta pesquisa, relacionamos este eixo teórico basilar a outras teorias, com o intuito de afirmarmos o aspecto comparativo da Literatura. Dessa forma, com esta dissertação de mestrado, esperamos contribuir para os estudos da Literatura Portuguesa, como também reintroduzir a obra de Augusto Abelaira no campo da crítica literária. / This work presents a study of the novel Nem só mas também, from Augusto Abelaira. We have based our analysis on Agamben`s notion of non-functionality (operositá, usually translated as inoperative), what made it possible to exhibit the way in which this work of art relates to its particular (social) reality. We maintain that Abelaira`s book represents this reality and, by means of its complex narrative, articulates a pungent criticism of its structure. This is mainly accomplished through the covert denunciative character of the novel, as well as through the testimony of Portuguese society post Carnation Revolution it presents us with. Besides Agamben, we have also relied upon Paul Ricoeur`s hermeneutics to build up our conceptual framework, as well as on various other theories, by means of which we expect to have done justice to literature`s comparative methodology. Our objectives were to thus contribute to the field of Portuguese Literature by means of a novel interpretation of Nem só mas também, and it is our wish that it shall help shedding new light on Abelaira`s work as an object of literary criticism.
