Contribution à l'analyse de l'endommagement par fatigue et au dimensionnement de structures soumises à des vibrations aléatoires / Contribution to fatigue damage analysis and to design of structures under random loadings

Cette thèse est consacrée au développement d’un outil de pré-dimensionnement par éléments finis pour l’estimation de l’endommagement par fatigue polycyclique de structures linéaires sous chargements multiaxiaux et stationnaires gaussiens. L’état de contraintes atteint dans ces structures étant aléatoire, il devient nécessaire de raisonner en terme de statistique et l’approche spectrale s’avère particulièrement adaptée pour cette situation. Dans ce travail, les méthodes spectrales sont améliorées par la prise en compte des largeurs de bande des spectres de réponses des structures soumises à des chargements nonproportionnels et de moyennes non nulles. Le critère d’endommagement de Sines est retenu. L’étude numérique de la distribution de l’endommagement résultant des incertitudes sur les paramètres matériaux et des applications dans le domaine de l’optimisation des structures sont également abordées. / This dissertation is devoted to the development of a finite element pre-designing tool for the estimation of high cycle fatigue damage for linear structure subject to multiaxial and Gaussian stationary loads. Given the random nature of the stress state, it becomes necessary to look at this problem from a statistical point of view and spectral methods appear to be the best approach. In this work, spectral methods are improved by taking into account the response spectral bandwidths of structures under non proportional and non zero mean loads; the Sines’ damage criterion is employed. The numerical analysis of the fatigue damage distribution resulting from the uncertainties of the material parameters and applications in the field of structural optimisation are also treated.

Algoritmo de alocação dinâmica de largura de faixa para redes de comunicação móvel celular / Dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm for mobile communication networks

O crescente aumento da demanda de tráfego nas redes celulares vem aumentando a necessidade de uma melhor utilização dos recursos do sistema, já que sua expansão é custosa. Nas estações rádio base (ERB), a disponibilidade de largura de faixa de freqüências é limitada e desta maneira, em uma rede de comunicação móvel celular, o controle de admissão de chamadas exerce grande influência no desempenho do sistema, pois determina a utilização de banda das ERBs e se uma determinada quantidade de recursos (banda) será alocado ou não para uma determinada chamada. O desempenho da rede pode ser atrelado a determinados parâmetros, como a probabilidade de bloqueio de novas chamadas, probabilidade de bloqueio de chamadas handoff e a utilização de banda da rede. Este trabalho propõe um controle de admissão de chamadas que, no atendimento de uma chamada, faz o empréstimo de banda de chamadas em andamento na célula no caso de banda insuficiente. O sistema adota um mecanismo heurístico que determina a banda disponível para novas chamadas conforme os valores de certos parâmetros do sistema. O empréstimo de banda é realizado em chamadas em andamento nas células até níveis mínimos estabelecidos para cada tipo de chamada, que se diferenciam pelas necessidades de banda de cada uma. O algoritmo foi aplicado às bandas e características de uma rede de terceira geração (3G), que possui chamadas de voz, videoconferência, interação multimídia, e-mail, downloads e transferência de arquivos e a uma rede GSM/GPRS (global system for mobile communications/ general packet radio service), que possui chamadas de voz e de dados. Os resultados mostram melhorias na probabilidade de bloqueio de novas chamadas, probabilidade de bloqueio de handoff e na utilização de banda do sistema. / The recent growth in traffic loads in cellular networks has seen the need for a better use of system resources as its expansion is expensive. In the base transceiver station (BTS), the bandwidth availability is limited. Thus, in cellular networks the call admission control greatly influences the system performance because it determines the bandwidth use of the BTSs and if an amount of resources will or will not be allocated to a call. The network performance can be evaluated by parameters such as blocking probability of new calls, dropping probability of handoff calls and bandwidth use. This work proposes a call admission control that carries out the bandwidth borrowing when a call arrives and there is not enough bandwidth. The system makes use of a heuristic mechanism that determines the available bandwidth for the new calls according to some parameter values of the system. The bandwidth borrowing is applied to the cell ongoing calls until the minimum levels for each type are met. The algorithm was applied to the bandwidths and characteristics of a third generation cellular network, which supports voice calls, videoconference, multimedia interaction, e-mails, downloads and file transfers. It was also applied to a GSM/GPRS (global system for mobile communications/ general packet radio service), which supports voice and data calls. The results show improvements in the blocking probability of new calls, dropping probability of handoff calls and in the bandwidth use of the system.

Projeto e análise de aplicações de circuladores ativos para a operação em frequências de ultrassom Doppler de ondas contínuas / Design and application analysis of active circulators for operation in frequencies of continuous-wave Doppler ultrasound

Os circuladores tradicionais são amplamente utilizados em telecomunicações e defesa militar para o simultâneo envio e recepção de sinais por um único meio. Esses circuitos passivos, fabricados a partir de materiais ferromagnéticos, possuem a desvantagem do aumento de dimensões, peso e custos de fabricação com a diminuição da frequência de operação definida no projeto destes dispositivos, inviabilizando sua aplicação em frequências abaixo de 500 MHz. O circulador ativo surgiu como uma alternativa aos tradicionais, tendo aplicações em frequências desde o nível DC até a ordem de dezenas de gigahertz. As suas maiores aplicações ocorrem quando são necessários dispositivos compactos, de baixo custo e de baixa potência. Os primeiros circuitos propostos possuíam uma grande limitação em termos de frequência de operação e de potência entregue à carga. Entretanto, com os avanços tecnológicos na eletrônica, tais problemas podem ser amenizados atualmente. Neste trabalho é apresentado o desenvolvimento de um circuito circulador ativo para a utilização em instrumentação eletrônica, em particular para a operação em frequências na ordem das utilizadas em equipamentos de ultrassom Doppler de ondas contínuas, na faixa de 2 MHz a 10 MHz. As possíveis vantagens da implementação de circuladores em sistemas de ultrassom estão relacionadas ao incremento da relação sinal-ruído, aumento da área de recepção do transdutor, simplificação da construção do transdutor, simplificação do circuito de demodulação/ processamento, e maior isolação entre os circuitos de transmissão e recepção de sinais. Na fase inicial, o circulador ativo proposto é modelado por equacionamento, utilizando-se tanto o modelo ideal dos amplificadores operacionais como o seu modelo de resposta em frequência. Simulações computacionais foram executadas para confirmar a validade do equacionamento. Um circuito montado em placa de prototipagem rápida foi apresentado, e testes de prova de conceito em baixas frequências foram realizados, mostrando uma grande semelhança entre o teórico, o simulado e o experimental. A segunda parte contou com o projeto do circuito circulador para a operação em maiores frequências. O circuito proposto é composto por três amplificadores operacionais de realimentação por corrente e vários componentes passivos. Uma análise de sensibilidade utilizando os métodos de Monte-Carlo e análise do pior caso foi aplicada, resultando em um perfil de comportamento frente às variações dos componentes do circuito e às variações da impedância de carga. Uma placa de circuito impressa foi projetada, utilizando-se de boas práticas de leiaute para a operação em altas frequências. Neste circuito montado, foram realizados os seguintes testes e medições: comportamento no domínio do tempo, faixa dinâmica, nível de isolação em relação à amplitude do sinal, largura de banda, levantamento dos parâmetros de espalhamento, e envio e recepção de sinais por transdutor de ultrassom Doppler de ondas contínuas. Os resultados dos testes de desempenho foram satisfatórios, apresentando uma banda de transmissão de sinais para frequências de 100 MHz, isolação entre portas não consecutivas de 39 dB na frequência de interesse para ultrassom Doppler e isolação maior que 20 dB para frequências de até 35 MHz. A faixa dinâmica excedeu a tensão de 5 Vpp, e o circuito teve bom comportamento no envio e na recepção simultânea de sinais pelo transdutor de ultrassom. / Traditional circulators are widely used in both telecommunications and military defense for sending and receiving signals simultaneously through a single medium. These passive circuits which are manufactured from ferromagnetic materials, have the disadvantages of having suffered an increase in dimensions, weight, and manufacturing costs along with the decrease in the operation frequency established in the designs of such devices, thus preventing their useful employment in frequencies below 500 MHz. The active circulator emerged as an alternative to the traditional ones, and has applications on frequencies ranging from a DC level to levels involving dozens of gigahertz. It is applicable when compact devices are made necessary, at a low cost, and for low frequencies. The first circuits to be introduced had a major limitation in terms of operating frequency and power delivered to the load. However, due to technological advances in electronics, problems such as the aforementioned can now be minimized. This research work presents the development of an active circulator circuit to be used in electronic instrumentation, particularly for operation at frequencies such as those used in continuous wave Doppler ultrasound equipment, ranging from 2 MHz to 10 MHz. The advantages made possible by implementing ultrasound systems with circulators are related to an increase in the signal-to-noise ratio, an increase in the transducers reception area, a simplified construction of the transducer, simplification of the demodulation/processing circuit, and a greater isolation between the transmission circuits and signal reception. In the initial phase, the proposed active circulator was modeled by means of an equating method, using both the ideal model of operational amplifiers and the model of frequency response. Computer simulations were carried out in order to confirm the validity of the equating method. A circuit mounted upon a breadboard was introduced and proof of concept assessments were performed at low frequencies, showing a great similarity among the theoretical, simulated and experimented data. The second phase is when the circulator circuits design was developed in order make its operation at higher frequencies possible. The proposed circuit is comprised of three currentfeedback operational amplifiers and several passive components. A sensitivity analysis was carried out using Monte-Carlo methods and worst-case analyses, resulting in a certain behavioral profile influenced by variations in circuit components and variations in load impedance. A printed circuit board was designed, employing good practice layout standards so that operation at high frequencies would be achieved. The following evaluations and measurements were performed on the circuit that was assembled: time domain behavior, dynamic range, isolation level relative to signal amplitude, bandwidth, survey of the scattering parameters, and transmission and reception of signals by a continuous wave Doppler ultrasound transducer. The results of the performance tests were satisfactory, presenting a 100 MHz signal transmission band, isolation between non-consecutive ports of 39 dB at the frequency of interest to the Doppler ultrasound, and an isolation greater than 20 dB for frequencies of up to 35 MHz. The dynamic range exceeded the 5Vpp and the circuit performed satisfactorily in the simultaneous transmission and reception of signals through the ultrasound\'s transducer.

Algoritmos para alocação de banda em redes de acesso GPON / Algorithms for bandwidth allocation in GPON access networks

Neste trabalho propomos e analisamos algoritmos de alocação dinâmica de banda para rede óptica passiva (PON) de acesso padrão GPON (Gigabit PON). Estes algoritmos utilizam dados oriundos de SLA (service level agreement) para gerenciar a alocação de banda e classificar em 4 contêineres de tráfego (T-CONT) o tráfego gerado em 16 ONUs (optical network unit). Na transmissão upstream é utilizada a técnica de multiplexação por divisão de tempo (TDM) para gerenciar o acesso ao meio, evitando colisões. O primeiro algoritmo proposto aloca banda garantida para as ONUs e distribui a banda não utilizada de acordo com critério baseado em três SLAs. A taxa de bit upstream é 1,25 Gbps e o desempenho do algoritmo é analisado com base na variação do atraso de pacotes em função do tráfego gerado nas ONUs. O segundo algoritmo proposto utiliza ponderação de tráfego. Neste, analisamos o comportamento dos atrasos e a quantidade de banda solicitada e atendida por ONU quando as bandas garantida e extra são alteradas. Por fim, acrescentamos em nossa implementação um intervalo para o processamento do algoritmo de alocação dinâmica de banda (DBA) e resposta do hardware relacionado ao ciclo de interrogação. Então, analisamos o atraso de pacotes quando variamos o intervalo de processamento do DBA. Ao final, propomos uma solução preliminar para minimizar estes atrasos. Os resultados obtidos por meio de simulação computacional mostram a versatilidade dos algoritmos. / In this work we propose and analyze the performance of dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms for optical passive networks (PON) in GPON standard (Gigabit PON). These algorithms use data from SLA (service level agreement) to manage bandwidth allocation and classify in 4 traffic containers (T-CONT) the traffic generated by 16 ONUs (optical network unit). In the upstream transmission the time division multiplexing (TDM) technique is used to manage the medium access, avoiding collisions. The first proposed algorithm allocates guaranteed bandwidth for the ONUs and distributes the bandwidth not used according to the criteria based on three SLAs. The upstream bit rate is 1.25 Gbps and the algorithm performance is analyzed based on the packets delay variation versus the traffic generated by ONUs. The second proposed algorithm uses weighted traffic. In this, we analyze the delay performance and the required bandwidth for each ONU and how much it is served when the guaranteed and extra bandwidth are changed. Finally, we added in our implementation an interval for the processing of the dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm (DBA) and response of the hardware related to the interrogation cycle. In the end, we propose a preliminary solution to minimize these delays. The results obtained by means of computational simulation show the versatility of the algorithms.

Antennes quasi-auto-complémentaires pour terminaux mobiles multi-standards / Quasi-self-complementary antennas for multistandard mobile terminals

Une antenne auto-complémentaire possède des caractéristiques radioélectriques très intéressantes en ce qui concerne l’élargissement de sa bande passante. Basée sur le principe de Babinet, l’auto-complémentarité permet en effet de maximiser la largeur de bande de par la complémentarité air-métal dans la structure de l’antenne. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier quels pouvaient être les apports de l’auto-complémentarité dans le cas d’antennes à fortes contraintes d’intégration telles que celles utilisées pour les terminaux mobiles. Pour tester les limites de notre étude, nous avons choisi d’appliquer nos résultats à l’intégration d’antennes auto-complémentaires dans un objet communicant de type Smartphone multi-standards. Les antennes dites AC doivent par conséquent satisfaire de nombreux critères de performances tout en montrant leur capacité d’intégration. Celle-ci est rendue d’autant plus délicate, que la miniaturisation implique à son tour des phénomènes physiques limitant certaines performances, notamment en basse fréquence avec la nouvelle bande LTE. Dans une première étude, nous avons considéré différentes antennes et opté pour les antennes IFA-AC sur un plan de masse fini afin de couvrir initialement les bandes hautes DCS/PCS/UMTS et WLAN/LTE2600. Dans une seconde étude, nous avons amélioré leurs performances à l’aide d’éléments structurels nouveaux et interdépendants (éléments rayonnants de type double IFA), qui nous ont permis d’obtenir des résultats probants relatifs notamment à la couverture des bandes LTE800 et GSM. Enfin, nous avons complété notre projet en optimisant le lien radio par l’intégration de plusieurs éléments rayonnants AC sur un même PCB. / In this thesis we present the design and optimization of self-complementary antennas to be integrated into a Smartphone. A self-complementary antenna is known as a radio antenna with very interesting bandwidth characteristics. Self-complementarity is based on the Babinet’s principle which aims to maximize bandwidth by considering the complementarity of the air and metal in the construction of an antenna. To achieve an objective, the antennas must satisfy a number of criteria, both in terms of performance and also for the design methods and integration. Miniaturization is very sensitive and it is more difficult to implement an antenna because of the physical phenomena limiting performance, especially at low frequency with the new 4G band. In this study we considered initially the self-complementary-IFA on a finite ground plane size: 120x60mm² in order to cover the high frequencies: DCS/PCS/UMTS and WLAN/LTE2600. In the second part, we focused on the possibility of using some improvement techniques by adding structural element (capacitive elements and radiating elements). Various geometrical modifications applied to antenna structures have also been used to obtain results satisfying all criteria, including coverage of LTE800 bands and GSM bands. Several prototypes were used to compare the theoretical results and validate the concept of self-complementarity. We completed the project by developing a way to improve the radio link in natural environments. We have implemented several radiating self-complementary miniature multiband/broadband elements on the same PCB in order to implement the principles of diversity or MIMO.

Third-Party TCP Rate Control

The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is the dominant transport protocol in today?s Internet. The original design of TCP left congestion control open to future designers. Short of implementing changes to the TCP stack on the end-nodes themselves, Internet Service Providers have employed several techniques to be able to operate their network equipment efficiently. These techniques amount to shaping traffic to reduce cost and improve overall customer satisfaction. <br /><br /> The method that gives maximum control when performing traffic shaping is using an inline traffic shaper. An inline traffic shaper sits in the middle of any flow, allowing packets to pass through it and, with policy-limited freedom, inspects and modifies all packets as it pleases. However, a number of practical issues such as hardware reliability or ISP policy, may prevent such a solution from being employed. For example, an ISP that does not fully trust the quality of the traffic shaper would not want such a product to be placed in-line with its equipment, as it places a significant threat to its business. What is required in such cases is third-party rate control. <br /><br /> Formally defined, a third-party rate controller is one that can see all traffic and inject new traffic into the network, but cannot remove or modify existing network packets. Given these restrictions, we present and study a technique to control TCP flows, namely triple-ACK duplication. The triple-ACK algorithm allows significant capabilities to a third-party traffic shaper. We provide an analytical justification for why this technique works under ideal conditions and demonstrate via simulation the bandwidth reduction achieved. When judiciously applied, the triple-ACK duplication technique produces minimal badput, while producing significant reductions in bandwidth consumption under ideal conditions. Based on a brief study, we show that our algorithm is able to selectively throttle one flow while allowing another to gain in bandwidth.

Technology-independent CMOS op amp in minimum channel length

The performance of analog integrated circuits is dependent on the technology. Digital circuits are scalable in nature, and the same circuit can be scaled from one technology to another with improved performance. But, in analog integrated circuits, the circuit components must be re-designed to maintain the desired performance across different technologies. Moreover, in the case of digital circuits, minimum feature-size (short channel length) devices can be used for better performance, but analog circuits are still being designed using channel lengths larger than the minimum feature sizes. The research in this thesis is aimed at understanding the impact of technology scaling and short channel length devices on the performance of analog integrated circuits. The operational amplifier (op amp) is chosen as an example circuit for investigation. The performance of the conventional op amps are studied across different technologies for short channel lengths, and techniques to develop technology-independent op amp architectures have been proposed. In this research, three op amp architectures have been developed whose performance is relatively independent of the technology and the channel length. They are made scalable, and the same op amp circuits are scaled from a 0.25 um CMOS onto a 0.18 um CMOS technology with the same components. They are designed to achieve large small-signal gain, constant unity gain-bandwidth frequency and constant phase margin. They are also designed with short channel length transistors. Current feedback, gm-boosted, CMOS source followers are also developed, and they are used in the buffered versions of these op amps.

Gestion des ressources dans les réseaux cellulaires sans fil

L’émergence de nouvelles applications et de nouveaux services (tels que les applications multimédias, la voix-sur-IP, la télévision-sur-IP, la vidéo-sur-demande, etc.) et le besoin croissant de mobilité des utilisateurs entrainent une demande de bande passante de plus en plus croissante et une difficulté dans sa gestion dans les réseaux cellulaires sans fil (WCNs), causant une dégradation de la qualité de service. Ainsi, dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons à la gestion des ressources, plus précisément à la bande passante, dans les WCNs. Dans une première partie de la thèse, nous nous concentrons sur la prédiction de la mobilité des utilisateurs des WCNs. Dans ce contexte, nous proposons un modèle de prédiction de la mobilité, relativement précis qui permet de prédire la destination finale ou intermédiaire et, par la suite, les chemins des utilisateurs mobiles vers leur destination prédite. Ce modèle se base sur : (a) les habitudes de l’utilisateur en terme de déplacements (filtrées selon le type de jour et le moment de la journée) ; (b) le déplacement courant de l’utilisateur ; (c) la connaissance de l’utilisateur ; (d) la direction vers une destination estimée ; et (e) la structure spatiale de la zone de déplacement. Les résultats de simulation montrent que ce modèle donne une précision largement meilleure aux approches existantes. Dans la deuxième partie de cette thèse, nous nous intéressons au contrôle d’admission et à la gestion de la bande passante dans les WCNs. En effet, nous proposons une approche de gestion de la bande passante comprenant : (1) une approche d’estimation du temps de transfert intercellulaire prenant en compte la densité de la zone de déplacement en terme d’utilisateurs, les caractéristiques de mobilité des utilisateurs et les feux tricolores ; (2) une approche d’estimation de la bande passante disponible à l’avance dans les cellules prenant en compte les exigences en bande passante et la durée de vie des sessions en cours ; et (3) une approche de réservation passive de bande passante dans les cellules qui seront visitées pour les sessions en cours et de contrôle d’admission des demandes de nouvelles sessions prenant en compte la mobilité des utilisateurs et le comportement des cellules. Les résultats de simulation indiquent que cette approche réduit largement les ruptures abruptes de sessions en cours, offre un taux de refus de nouvelles demandes de connexion acceptable et un taux élevé d’utilisation de la bande passante. Dans la troisième partie de la thèse, nous nous penchons sur la principale limite de la première et deuxième parties de la thèse, à savoir l’évolutivité (selon le nombre d’utilisateurs) et proposons une plateforme qui intègre des modèles de prédiction de mobilité avec des modèles de prédiction de la bande passante disponible. En effet, dans les deux parties précédentes de la thèse, les prédictions de la mobilité sont effectuées pour chaque utilisateur. Ainsi, pour rendre notre proposition de plateforme évolutive, nous proposons des modèles de prédiction de mobilité par groupe d’utilisateurs en nous basant sur : (a) les profils des utilisateurs (c’est-à-dire leur préférence en termes de caractéristiques de route) ; (b) l’état du trafic routier et le comportement des utilisateurs ; et (c) la structure spatiale de la zone de déplacement. Les résultats de simulation montrent que la plateforme proposée améliore la performance du réseau comparée aux plateformes existantes qui proposent des modèles de prédiction de la mobilité par groupe d’utilisateurs pour la réservation de bande passante. / The emergence of new applications and services (e.g., multimedia applications, voice over IP and IPTV) and the growing need for mobility of users cause more and more growth of bandwidth demand and a difficulty of its management in Wireless Cellular Networks (WCNs). In this thesis, we are interested in resources management, specifically the bandwidth, in WCNs. In the first part of the thesis, we study the user mobility prediction that is one of key to guarantee efficient management of available bandwidth. In this context, we propose a relatively accurate mobility prediction model that allows predicting final or intermediate destinations and subsequently mobility paths of mobile users to reach these predicted destinations. This model takes into account (a) user’s habits in terms of movements (filtered according to the type of day and the time of the day); (b) user's current movement; (c) user’s contextual knowledge; (d) direction from current location to estimated destination; and (e) spatial conceptual maps. Simulation results show that the proposed model provides good accuracy compared to existing models in the literature. In the second part of the thesis, we focus on call admission control and bandwidth management in WCNs. Indeed, we propose an efficient bandwidth utilization scheme that consists of three schemes: (1) handoff time estimation scheme that considers navigation zone density in term of users, users’ mobility characteristics and traffic light scheduling; (2) available bandwidth estimation scheme that estimates bandwidth available in the cells that considers required bandwidth and lifetime of ongoing sessions; and (3) passive bandwidth reservation scheme that passively reserves bandwidth in cells expected to be visited by ongoing sessions and call admission control scheme for new call requests that considers the behavior of an individual user and the behavior of cells. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces considerably the handoff call dropping rate while maintaining acceptable new call blocking rate and provides high bandwidth utilization rate. In the third part of the thesis, we focus on the main limitation of the first and second part of the thesis which is the scalability (with the number of users) and propose a framework, together with schemes, that integrates mobility prediction models with bandwidth availability prediction models. Indeed, in the two first contributions of the thesis, mobility prediction schemes process individual user requests. Thus, to make the proposed framework scalable, we propose group-based mobility prediction schemes that predict mobility for a group of users (not only for a single user) based on users’ profiles (i.e., their preference in terms of road characteristics), state of road traffic and users behaviors on roads and spatial conceptual maps. Simulation results show that the proposed framework improves the network performance compared to existing schemes which propose aggregate mobility prediction bandwidth reservation models.
