Enabling pervasive applications by understanding individual and community behaviors / Nouvelles applications pervasives par la modélisation des comportements individuels et communautaires

Les empreintes digitales recueillies par détection systèmes offrent de nouvelles façons de percevoir les comportements d'un individu. En outre, de grandes collections d'empreintes numériques des communautés apportent de nouvelles compréhensions des comportements humains. La perception des comportements humains à partir des empreintes digitales de détection permet de construire des nouvelles applications sur les systèmes de détection. D’après les empreintes digitales recueillies avec l'accéléromètre embarqué dans les téléphones mobiles et les taxis équipés avec GPS, nous présentons ici notre travail sur la reconnaissance des comportements individuels, la capture des comportements communautaires et la démonstration des nouveaux services activés. En reconnaissant les comportements individuels, nous présentons la reconnaissance des activités physiques d'une personne avec les lectures de l'accéléromètre recueillies à partir des téléphones mobiles mis dans les poches autour de la zone pelvienne. Avec les empreintes GPS d'un taxi, nous résumons les comportements anormaux du transport des passagers pour un individu et améliorons l'efficacité de la reconnaissance de la méthode existante IBOAT. En outre, sur la base des observations dans la vie réelle, nous proposons une méthode pour détecter les événements de changement de service d’un taxi individuel. Avec des traces GPS à grande échelle et à l’aide des milliers de taxis, nous étudions les comportements anormaux pour le transport des passagers et les comportements de changement de travail et exploitons les stratégies de service de taxi. En outre, nous présentons un système intelligent de taxi comme une étude exemplaire des nouvelles applications qui s’appuie sur les comportements perçus individuelles et communautaires / The digital footprints collected from the prevailing sensing systems provide novel ways to perceive an individual's behaviors. Furthermore, large collections of digital footprints from communities bring novel understandings of human behaviors from the community perspective (community behaviors), such as investigating their characteristics and learning the hidden human intelligence. The perception of human behaviors from the sensing digital footprints enables novel applications for the sensing systems. Bases on the digital footprints collected with accelerometer-embedded mobile phones and GPS equipped taxis, in this dissertation we present our work in recognizing individual behaviors, capturing community behaviors and demonstrating the novel services enabled. With the GPS footprints of a taxi, we summarize the individual anomalous passenger delivery behaviors and improve the recognition efficiency of the existing method iBOAT by introducing an inverted index mechanism. Besides, based on the observations in real life, we propose a method to detect the work-shifting events of an individual taxi. With real-life large-scale GPS traces of thousands of taxis, we investigate the anomalous passenger delivery behaviors and work shifting behaviors from the community perspective and exploit taxi serving strategies. We find that most anomaly behaviors are intentional detours and high detour inclination won't make taxis the top players. And the spatial-temporal distribution of work shifting events in the taxi community reveals their influences. While exploiting taxi serving strategies, we propose a novel method to find the initial intentions in passenger finding. Furthermore, we present a smart taxi system as an example to demonstrate the novel applications that are enabled by the perceived individual and community behaviors

Les services Internet populaires modèlent et remodèlent fondamentalement les moyens traditionnels de communication des personnes, ayant ainsi un impact majeur sur leur vie sociale. Deux des services Internet très populaires avec cette caractéristique sont les Réseaux sociaux en ligne (OSN) et les systèmes Peer-to-Peer (P2P). Les ONS fournissent un environnement virtuel où les gens peuvent partager leurs informations et leurs intérêts tout en étant en contact avec d'autres personnes. D'autre part, les systèmes P2P, qui sont toujours l'un des services populaires avec une grande proportion de l'ensemble du trafic Internet, offrent une occasion en or pour leurs clients de partager un type de contenu différent, y compris le contenu protégé. En dehors de l'énorme popularité des ONS et des systèmes de P2P parmi les utilisateurs réguliers, ils sont intensivement utilisés par les professionnels (grandes entreprises, politiciens, athlètes, célébrités en cas d'ONS et éditeurs de contenu professionnels en cas de P2P) afin d'interagir avec les gens à des fins différentes (campagnes marketing, les commentaires des clients, amélioration de la réputation publique, etc.) Dans cette thèse, nous caractérisons le comportement des utilisateurs réguliers et professionnels dans les deux services mentionnés populaires (ONS et P2P) en termes de stratégies de publication, de consommation de contenu et d'analyse comportementale. À cette fin, cinq de nos études menées sont présentées dans ce manuscrit comme suit: - "L'évolution des contenus multimédias", qui présente une analyse approfondie sur l'évolution du contenu multimédia disponible en BitTorrent en se concentrant sur quatre mesures pertinentes à travers différentes catégories de contenu : la disponibilité du contenu, la popularité du contenu, la taille de contenu et les commentaires de l'utilisateur - "La réaction des utilisateurs professionnels face aux actions de lutte contre le piratage", en examinant l'impact de deux grandes actions de lutte contre le piratage - la fermeture de Megaupload et la mise en œuvre de la loi anti-piratage française (HADOPI) - sur le comportement des publicateurs professionnels dans le plus grand portail de BitTorrent qui sont les principaux fournisseurs de contenu en ligne protégé. - "La quantité d'informations divulguées sur Facebook", en enquêtant sur l'exposition publique des profils utilisateurs, une grande base de données comprenant un demi-million d'utilisateurs réguliers. - "Les utilisateurs professionnels Cross Posting Activity», en analysant le modèle de publication des utilisateurs professionnels de mêmes informations sur trois grands ONS à savoir Facebook, Google+ et Twitter. - "Les stratégies des utilisateurs professionnels dans les ONS", où nous étudions la stratégie globale d'utilisateurs professionnels par secteur (par exemple, les entreprises de voitures, l'habillement, politiques, etc.) sur Facebook, Google+ et Twitter. Les résultats de cette thèse fournissent une vision d'ensemble pour comprendre certains aspects comportementaux importants de différents types d'utilisateurs des services Internet populaires et ces contributions peuvent être utilisées dans divers domaines (par exemple analyse de campagne marketing et publicité, etc.) et les différentes parties peuvent bénéficier des résultats et des méthodologies mises en œuvre telles que les FAI et les propriétaires des services pour leur planification ou l'expansion des services actuels à venir, ainsi que les professionnels pour accroître leur succès sur les médias sociaux / Popular Internet services are fundamentally shaping and reshaping traditional ways of people communication, thus having a major impact on their social life. Two of the very popular Internet services with this characteristic are Online Social Networks (OSNs) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems. OSNs provide a virtual environment where people can share their information and interests as well as being in contact with other people. On the other hand, P2P systems, which are still one of the popular services with a large proportion of the whole Internet traffic, provide a golden opportunity for their customers to share different type of content including copyrighted content. Apart from the huge popularity of OSNs and P2P systems among regular users, they are being intensively used by professional players (big companies, politician, athletes, celebrities in case of OSNs and professional content publishers in case of P2P) in order to interact with people for different purposes (marketing campaigns, customer feedback, public reputation improvement, etc.). In this thesis, we characterize the behavior of regular and professional users in the two mentioned popular services (OSNs and P2P systems) in terms of publishing strategies, content consumption and behavioral analysis. To this end, five of our conducted studies are presented in this manuscript as follows: - “The evolution of multimedia contents", which presents a thorough analysis on the evolution of multimedia content available in BitTorrent by focusing on four relevant metrics across different content categories: content availability, content popularity, content size and user's feedback. - “The reaction of professional users to antipiracy actions", by examining the impact of two major antipiracy actions, the closure of Megaupload and the implementation of the French antipiracy law (HADOPI), on professional publishers behavior in the largest BitTorrent portal who are major providers of online copyrighted content. - “The amount of disclosed information on Facebook", by investigating the public exposure of Facebook users' profile attributes in a large dataset including half million regular users. - “Professional users Cross Posting Activity", by analyzing the publishing pattern of professional users which includes same information over three major OSNs namely Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. - “Professional Users' Strategies in OSNs", where we investigate the global strategy of professional users by sector (e.g., Cars companies, Clothing companies, Politician, etc.) over Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. The outcomes of this thesis provide an overall vision to understand some important behavioral aspects of different types of users on popular Internet services and these contributions can be used in various domains (e.g. marketing analysis and advertising campaign, etc.) and different parties can benefit from the results and the implemented methodologies such as ISPs and owners of the Services for their future planning or expansion of the current services as well as professional players to increase their success on social media

Autism spectrum disorder in kindergarten and transitional kindergarten: Teachers' self-perceived ability to meet the needs of students transitioning from early intervention behavior therapy programs

This qualitative multiple case study addresses kindergarten teachers’ and transitional kindergarten teachers’ self-perceived abilities to meet the needs of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who participate in early intervention behavior therapy (EIBT) programs. Systems thinking was used to examine the participants’ interactions with the school site-based and EIBT-based support systems within which they were expected to operate. Personal interviews conducted at three intervals during the first five months of the 2015-16 school year rendered three emergent themes: participants initially reported feeling more confident meeting the academic versus the social/behavioral needs of their EIBT students, but that position reversed for two participants during the course of the study; participants reported in-class support aides provided by EIBT agencies were superior to aides provided by their school districts, and; participants preferred having a single ‘go-to’ support person at their school site to having a robust, wide-ranging support system. Contains recommendations for establishing subsystems that foster inner- and intra-support system communication and raising ASD awareness.

L’analyse appliquée du comportement en autisme et ses enjeux : une évaluation du potentiel de la technologie pour améliorer la pratique et la recherche

Le trouble du spectre de l’autisme (TSA) est un trouble neurodéveloppemental caractérisé par des déficits importants de la communication sociale et des interactions sociales ainsi que par la présence de comportements ou d'intérêts restreints et répétitifs. Les données empiriques suggèrent que les interventions découlant de l’analyse appliquée du comportement (AAC) sont les plus efficaces pour intervenir auprès des personnes ayant un TSA. Néanmoins, certaines lacunes en lien avec les interventions découlant de l’analyse du comportement existent. Notamment, le manque d’accessibilité aux services, le manque de connaissances quant aux facteurs sous-jacents à l’efficacité des interventions et les perceptions divergentes de l’AAC freinent son adoption à plus grande échelle. Cette thèse comprend trois études qui mettent à profit la technologie pour mieux comprendre ou améliorer ces enjeux entourant l’AAC. Dans le cadre ma première étude, les effets d’une formation interactive en ligne qui vise à enseigner aux parents des stratégies découlant de l’AAC pour réduire les comportements problématiques de leur enfant ont été évalués à l’aide d’un devis randomisé contrôlé avec liste d’attente. Les résultats de cette étude soutiennent le potentiel et l’efficacité de la formation pour augmenter la fréquence d’utilisation de stratégies d’intervention découlant de l’AAC par les parents ainsi que pour réduire l’occurrence et la sévérité des comportements problématiques de leur enfant. En revanche, aucune différence significative n’a été observée pour la mesure des pratiques parentales. Certains enjeux éthiques et pratiques entourant la dissémination de la formation en ligne complètement auto-guidées sont discutés. La deuxième étude de ma thèse doctorale visait donc à montrer comment utiliser des algorithmes d’apprentissage automatique pour identifier les personnes qui sont plus enclines à observer des améliorations suivant une intervention. Plus spécifiquement, l’utilisation de quatre algorithmes d’apprentissage automatique pour prédire les participants ayant pris part à la première étude de cette thèse qui étaient les plus propices à rapporter une diminution des comportements problématiques de leur enfant est démontrée. Cette étude soutient que des algorithmes d’apprentissage automatique peuvent être utilisés avec de petits échantillons pour soutenir la prise de décision des cliniciens et des chercheurs. La troisième étude cette thèse visait à quantifier l’information sur l’AAC publiée dans quatre sous-forums d’un forum internet, une ressource en ligne souvent utilisée par les familles pour identifier des interventions à utiliser après de leur enfant. Pour atteindre cet objectif, une procédure de forage de données a été réalisée. Les analyses de cette étude appuient que les parents qui fréquentent le forum sont exposés à une proportion importante de messages présentant une désapprobation de l’AAC pour intervenir auprès des personnes ayant un TSA ou bien une description inexacte des principes, méthodes, procédures ou interventions qui en découlent. Ensemble, les études effectuées dans le cadre de ma thèse doctorale mettent en évidence les bienfaits de la technologie pour l’intervention psychosociale, tant au niveau de l’évaluation que de l’intervention et du transfert de connaissances. Comme souligné dans les trois études de cette thèse, chacun des outils utilisés présente des limites et doit donc être utilisé pour soutenir les cliniciens et les chercheurs, et non pour remplacer leurs interventions et leur jugement clinique. Les études futures doivent continuer à s’intéresser à l’efficacité des outils technologiques, mais également aux facteurs sous-jacents qui favoriseront leur utilisation et aux considérations éthiques liées à leur emploi. / Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant deficits in social communication and social interactions and by the presence of restricted and repetitive behaviors or interests. Empirical evidence suggests that interventions based on applied behavior analysis (ABA) are the most effective for treating individuals with ASD. Nevertheless, interventions based on behavior analysis present some issues. In particular, intervention services are hard to access, knowledge about the underlying factors of the effectiveness of interventions is lacking and divergent perceptions about of ABA hamper the adoption of the science. This dissertation includes three studies in which technology is used to better understand or improve these issues regarding ABA. As part of my first study, the effects of a fully self-guided interactive web training (IWT) developed for teaching parents of children with ASD ABA-derived strategies to reduce their child's challenging behaviors were evaluated using a randomized waitlist trial. The results of this study support the effectiveness of the IWT for increasing the frequency of parents’ use of behavioral interventions as well as for reducing the frequency and severity of their child’s challenging behaviors. In contrast, no significant difference was observed for the measurement of parenting practices. Ethical and practical consideration regarding the dissemination of fully self-guided online trainings are discussed. The second study of my doctoral thesis aimed to show how to use machine learning algorithms to predict individuals who were most likely to improve following an intervention. Specifically, a demonstration of how to implement four machine learning algorithms to predict the participants from my first study who were the most likely to report a decrease in their child's iv challenging behaviors. This study argues that machine learning algorithms can be used with small samples to support clinicians’ and researchers’ decision making. The third study of my dissertation aimed to quantify the information about ABA published on four subforums of an internet forum; an online resource often used by families to identify potential interventions for their child. This goal was achieved through the use of a data mining procedure. The analyses showed that parents who visited the forum were exposed to a significant proportion of messages that disapproved of ABA for individuals with ASD or that inaccurately described its underlying principles, methods, procedures, or interventions. Together, the studies carried out as part of my doctoral dissertation highlight the benefits of technology to support assessments, interventions, and knowledge gains or transfer within psychosocial practices. As highlighted in the three studies of this dissertation, each of the tools used presents limitations and should therefore be used to support clinicians and researchers, and should not replace their interventions and clinical judgment. Future studies should continue to focus on the effectiveness of technological tools and on the underlying factors that will promote their use. Finally, researchers must reflect on the ethical considerations related to use of technology when working with humans.

Actively Caring About the Actively Caring Survey: Evaluating the Reliability and Validity of a Measure of Dispositional Altruism

Geller’s Actively Caring Survey (ACS) was theorized to measure person states deemed necessary to “Actively Care” or act altruistically toward others. Empirical research of the ACS has been limited, and this researcher sought to evaluate its reliability, validity, and factorial consistency. Undergraduate students (n = 1,095) completed the measure online. Hypotheses were partially supported. Unrotated primary component analysis found the ACS to be a unitary measure with 73.3% of the items loading onto the first factor. The ACS showed excellent internal consistency. Convergent and divergent validity with existing measures (i.e., the Big 5 Personality, Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability, Cognitive Failures Questionnaire, Barratt Impulsiveness, and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Venturesomeness scales) was found in 88.9% of the predicted relationships; the ACS was negatively correlated with social desirability. An abbreviated ACS revision produced similar findings. Future studies should evaluate the measure in nonstudent populations, use clinical and industrial settings, and explore predictive validity.

Filipina American Mothers’ Experiences Obtaining Services for Their Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifaceted developmental condition that manifests in early childhood, affecting various aspects of neurologic, biological, adaptive, social, linguistic, and cognitive functions. A timely and accurate diagnosis of ASD is crucial for effective intervention, promoting personal and social growth, and fostering independent adulthood. However, obtaining this diagnosis can pose challenges, particularly for people of color, who often encounter disparities in healthcare access compared to their White counterparts. This study aims to investigate the experiences of Filipina mothers raising children with ASD, specifically focusing on their journey to access appropriate autism services. As of 2019, there were 4.2 million Filipinos residing in the United States, making them a significant ethnic group (Budiman, 2022). Research indicates a heightened risk of severe ASD diagnoses among Filipino children (Becerra et al., 2014). Additionally, Filipina-American women have a notably high prevalence of moderate to severe postpartum depression, which can hinder their ability to identify developmental delays in their infants (Huang et al., 2007). Stereotypical assumptions about Filipina mothers as passive and quiet individuals often lead to their silencing within the predominantly White male medical community (Alvarez et al., 2010; Emerson et al., 2015; Kizildag et al., 2022). Given the higher prevalence of autism among minorities compared to White children (Maenner et al., 2023), addressing this issue and improving access to resources for people of color is imperative. This narrative study focuses on understanding how Filipina-American women navigate the complex landscape of autism services for their children. The researcher, a Filipina-American mother of children with ASD, initiates this exploration, seeking to shed light on the experiences of fellow Filipina-American mothers. The study will encompass their experience from the initial recognition of their children's developmental and behavioral symptoms to obtaining essential services. The study will gather qualitative data through surveys and interviews, which will be analyzed using thematic analysis. The research may reveal valuable insights into enhancing early detection of ASD in children of color. Presently, the average age of early ASD detection in the United States stands at five years old (Barbaro et al., 2020). However, existing studies underscore the critical importance of early intervention, ideally before age two, in improving the quality of life for affected individuals and their families (Bailey et al., 2005; Dawson et al., 2010; Harris et al., 2000). Consequently, addressing the experiences of Filipina women in accessing services for their autistic children can contribute to increased resource access and improved outcomes for these families.

The Development of a Three Minute Realtime Sampling Method to Measure Social Harmony during Interactions between Parents and their Toddlers with Autism

Training parents of a child with autism to increase the frequency of their child's social behavior may improve the quality of parent-child interactions. The purpose of this methodological study was to develop a direct observation method for rapidly sampling social harmony between parents and their toddlers with autism during parent training interactions. The current study used a pre and post probe design, with benchmark comparisons to test the discriminability of the measurement protocol across two sets of data. The first set of data came from pre and post training videos from a parent training program for children with a diagnosis of autism or at risk for a diagnosis. The second set of data came from videos of typically developing toddlers and their parents. The results of the study show that the measurement system differentiated in the level of harmonious engagement between the benchmark sample and the sample including children diagnosed with autism. The results are discussed in the context of future directions and the utility of the measurement system for behavior analytic practices in parent training and other settings where rapport and complex interactional behaviors are an intervention priority.
