Hällråd, Emma, Holm, Matilda January 2022 (has links)
A negative body image is more common among women in aesthetic sports compared to the general population. Body dissatisfaction may lead to unhealthy behaviors such as excessive exercise and disturbed food habits. The purpose of the study was to examine Bikini Fitness-athletes experience of body image associated with the sport and competition. The study was based on Lox et al. (2014) proposed model of factors which can affect, explain and be explained by body image, consisting of the components interpersonal experiences, psychological factors, behavior, physical characteristics, sociocultural influences and physical changes. Eight female Bikini Fitness-athletes participated in the study, of which all participants were between 21-34 years of age (M = 23.9, SD = 4.01). All participants had completed a competition in the past year. A semi-structured interview guide was used. The results showed that the participants had experiences that could be linked to both a positive and negative body image. The components psychological factors, behavior, sociocultural factors and physical changes could before a competition be linked to experiences that indicate a positive body image but after the competition be linked to experiences related to negative body perception. Despite both positive and negative experiences reported, the results indicated that the participants mainly experienced a negative body image associated with the sport.

The artist, the atom, and the Bikini Atoll : Ralston Crawford paints Operation Crossroads

Gorski, Susanna Brooks 19 October 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores Ralston Crawford’s canvases painted after witnessing the events of Operation Crossroads at the Bikini Atoll in 1946. Commissioned by Fortune, the artist provides the viewer with a unique and captivating view of the destruction wrought by atomic weaponry. Through a careful look at Crawford’s relationship with Fortune, Edith Halpert’s Downtown Gallery, and Crawford’s artistic contemporaries, this thesis positions the paintings within the art historical and cultural context of the mid-twentieth century and asserts their importance to the history of the Atomic Age. The thesis traces Crawford’s artistic development and his use of an Americanized Cubist language. In addition, the thesis looks closely at the rich cultural fabric of the postwar era and evaluates Crawford’s position in the American Art scene. / text

Bikini Fitness-atleters erfarenheter och upplevelser av kroppsuppfattning kopplat till sporten och tävling / Bikini Fitness athletes experience of body image associated with the sport and competition

Catrine, Aring January 2019 (has links)
A negative body image is more common among female athletes in leanness-sports compared to the general population (Goldfield, 2009; Kong & Harris, 2015). Body dissatisfaction can lead to unhealthy behaviors like excessive exercise, disordered eating or dieting to change the body and avoidance (Grogan, 2006).The aim of the current study was to examine Bikini Fitness athlete’s experience of body image associated with the sport and competition. Totally six female Bikini Fitness athletes of age 23-27 (M=25, SD=1,29) from southern Sweden participated in an individual interview of approximately 60 minutes. In the qualitative study, the data was analysed in a qualitative content analysis by guidelines of Lundman and Hällgren-Graneheim (2012). The result showed that the athletes experienced body dissatisfaction related to Bikini Fitness and reported experiences related to both a positive and a negative body image. Moreover, the result was in line with previous research that discovered body dissatisfaction among athletes in the physique sport(Chaba et al., 2018). The current study may contribute with meaningful knowledge regarding Bikini Fitness-athlete’s experiences of body image related to the sport and competition. Also, to create a deeper understanding of Bikini Fitness as a discipline and how the different elements and periods is experienced by the athletes in the sport and when they need extra social support.

Contaminated and Scarred: An Exploration in the Landscapes and Narratives of the Anthropocene / Förorenat och ärrat: En utforskning av de antropoceniska landskapen och narrativen

Pietilä, Laura January 2020 (has links)
In this thesis, I explore and analyse narratives around toxic and scarred landscapes. The aim of the thesis is to understand human views and experiences of anthropogenic environments through narratives of contamination and toxicity. Some concepts used throughout the thesis are landscape, heritage, ghost, and trauma. The research is situated in the transdisciplinary field of environmental history and utilises multidisciplinary academic research, art works, and several different media outlets as sources of data. Many brief examples of toxic sites are given along the way to demonstrate discussed themes in practice, but two specific landscapes are explored in detail. These are Bikini Atoll in Marshall Islands, an island remaining radioactive to date due to Cold War era weapon testing, and the town of Teckomatorp in Sweden, a remediated site of a chemical industry scandal. Furthermore, an academic environmental justice project Toxic Bios (KTH, Stockholm) is analysed as a medium of narrative creation and several visual artists’ works are brought up alongside news articles and cinematography. This thesis is an exploratory journey and it aspires to contribute to bridging academic disciplines as well as encouraging expression of individual stories and subjective viewpoints in narrations of scarred landscapes. Findings of the thesis link to previous research on landscapes as experienced and temporal – toxic landscapes are narrated constantly through many perceptions, storylines, and branches of research. Some reoccurring themes are sickness, environmental justice, tensions between local and global levels of narration, fascinating but controversial depictions of toxicity’s aesthetics and individual experiences of dramatic pasts in non-dramatic present. Individual stories, counter-hegemonic narratives, and transdisciplinary practices are needed in order to create deeper understanding of living in the Anthropocene.

Forced Migration and Resettlement in the Pacific - Development of a Model addressing the Resettlement of Forced Migrants in the Pacific Islands Region from Analysis of the Banaban and Bikinian Cases

Collins, Dominic Noel January 2009 (has links)
There are currently several potential threats to the long-term habitability of many atolls and islands in the Pacific Islands region, with environmental change appearing the most serious. Minimal attention has been given to the possibility that migrants forced from uninhabitable islands will require resettlement en masse, and assessing past resettlements is crucial to planning for what the future my hold. Population resettlement is not a new phenomenon in the Pacific Islands region, yet recently it has been neglected by academics. This study builds on past work by Bedford and assesses the current literature in the fields of population resettlement and forced migration, finding that the situation threatening the Pacific Islands is not adequately addressed by any of the planning or analytical tools available. A model based predominantly on the work of Cernea and Muggah was developed by the author to account for this theoretical shortcoming. The model is used to assess the past cases of resettlement from Banaba and Bikini Atoll, identifying variables which influence the success of resettlement. Conclusions are drawn from the case studies and recommendations for how to avoid negative outcomes in future resettlements are made. This study advances the current literature, provides an in-depth analysis of pressing yet hitherto avoided issues, and can inform both foreign and domestic policy planning in not just Pacific Island states, but receiver states and other potentially effected islands or atolls regardless of region.

[en] RELATIONS BETWEEN THE DESIGN OF THE BIKINI AND REDESIGNED BODY IN RIO DE JANEIRO BEACH FASHION / [pt] RELAÇÕES ENTRE O DESIGN DE BIQUÍNI E O CORPO REMODELADO NA MODA-PRAIA CARIOCA

JANARA MORENA DA SILVA DE OLIVEIRA 09 December 2016 (has links)
[en] This research assumes that body and fashion always conversed in the sense that one shapes the other. The human body is changing and remodeling, is modeled according to the subtle codes of every culture and time. It is a body of subjectivity, fluid, biological and social. In Brazil the strong beach culture and the overvaluation of the body have link with the bikini design through the ages. In this thesis we propose occur to understand how relationships between design of bikini and the body, in particular the body redesigned through sports, nutrition and plastic surgery in the current context of the beach culture of Rio de Janeiro. Exploratory research and field research with beach fashion designers, plastic surgeons, sellers and users of bikini have been made. The sociocultural plurality and body has enabled a more complex view of the object of research, we have reached several relationships between body and bikini design: relations of influence, dependence and interdependence. Brazil is reference in beach fashion, however is no dearth of research in the area thus making this timely research in the area of design and the fashion industry.

[pt] A RELAÇÃO ENSINO E INDÚSTRIA: UMA VISÃO A PARTIR DA MODA PRAIA CARIOCA / [en] THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEACHING AND THE INDUSTRY: A VIEW FROM THE CARIOCA BEACHWEAR

JANARA MORENA DA SILVA DE OLIVEIRA 28 May 2020 (has links)
[en] This thesis aims to deepen understanding about the relationship between teaching and the fashion industry in Brazil. It begins with the assumption that it does exist a gap in between both that consequently impact negatively in the whole sector. This theses presents itself as a deployment of a master degree dissertation, in which the focus was on the beach fashion in the context of the relations between design and body, in the Carioca beach culture. The standards of beachwear design is maintained, but the study turns to the scope of fashion learning processes. The beachwear segment is considered a successful case study for the national industry mainly for its innovation in design, quality blended with the local beach culture. Even though it is rooted as a strong reference both nationally and internationally, it has been found that the knowledge and intelectual content it is still well fragmented. There are several issues finding skilled professionals, showcasing the distance still to be narrowed between the classroom and to become hands-on in the factory floor and production. This gap has not contributed to the strength of the added value perception that the segment acquired in the last decades. In order to understand how the articulations between teaching and industry occur, we sought to listen to the actors involved: representatives of industry, fashion teachers, designers, students and entrepreneurs. The goal is to propose field researches and experiments, recommendations to prepare strategy initiatives utilizing design processes that could have real impact to shorten the relations of the learning centers and the market, creating incentives to accelerate the sector and ultimately contributing to the skilled job market.
