[en] THE DESIGN(ER) IN THE EDITORIAL PRODUCTION OF THE TEXTBOOK: ROLES, CONTRIBUTIONS AND LIMITS / [pt] O DESIGN(ER) NA PRODUÇÃO EDITORIAL DO LIVRO DIDÁTICO: FUNÇÕES, CONTRIBUIÇÕES E LIMITES

FERNANDA MACIEL JARDIM 12 June 2013 (has links)
[en] This dissertation deals with the insertion of the design(er) in the editorial production of the textbook – an instrument which is widely used in education in Brazil and, generally, acts as a foundation outlining the teaching practices applied in the classroom –, with a focus on the use of the geography textbook in elementary education. Among other issues, the question that guides this work can be summarized into the following: what is the role of design(er) in the textbook editing process? The collective construction process which the work goes through suffers interference from many different sources, making it much more difficult to define beforehand the roles and the limits imposed on the designer. However, it is possible to confirm the importance of the role of the designer in the production chain, being reasonable to assume that the designer even has a social role in this process. From this conjecture it is possible to delineate the path that leads to the issues facing this question. It is therefore an investigation – through a case study which examines the editorial production process – considering the role and the involvement of the agents present in the production chain (especially the designer), highlighting their functions, limits, and possible contributions. Finally, this observation allows us to examine the real and the idealized functions of the main participants in this process – such as the designer, one of the mediating reading agents –, taking into account the particularities of the production chain of textbook publishing, which is guided by a policy with precise objectives and educational and pecuniary interests.

An exploration of the state of self-publishing in the academic publishing sector of South Africa

Odendaal, Estelle Rhode 27 October 2008 (has links)
The academic publishing sector in South Africa is facing many changes and challenges in a post- 1994 democracy. Most of these changes were brought about by the Higher Education Act No 101 of 1997. Challenges and new trends include new business and threats from multinational corporations; a limited buying market at higher education level; a need for localised content; new emerging technologies in publishing and knowledge distribution; the merging of 36 higher education institutions into 22; escalating book production costs and book prices; a non-book buying and book reading culture; illegal photocopying and widespread copyright infringement; changing student and lecturer profiles including the language of instruction; increasing pressure on academics to publish research; inefficient student loan schemes; decreasing library acquisition budgets and the transformation of the publishing industry itself in terms of BBBEE. Within the midst of all these challenges, publishers are faced with a new trend, that of selfpublishing of academic textbooks, which lecturers then prescribe to their own group of students. Self-publishing implies that authors undertake all processes related to publishing on their own, including the financial risk of publishing a book. There is a multitude of literature available on self-publishing, but very little focuses on this trend within the academic environment. A literature survey of self-publishing provided various reasons and conditions for the existence of the phenomenon. The researcher made use of two questionnaires that were sent to academic campus bookshops and academic self-publishing authors. From the results of these two surveys it is evident that academic self-publishing is an increasing trend in the higher education environment of South Africa. Reasons for self-publishing collected from the literature survey were supported by the empirical research findings from the two surveys. The main reasons for self-publishing in the academic environment include financial incentives; a volatile author-publisher relationship; issues of copyright and control; possible rejection suffered by authors; technological advances and a sense of community service among academics and lecturing staff. The study was able to prove the existence of academic self-publishing in the higher education environment of South Africa. Academic self-publishing is most apparent in the academic fields of Business, Economics and Management Sciences to the extent that it could have far-reaching financial impact on markets that are traditionally lucrative for commercial publishers. Commercial publishers are encouraged to engage with author associations and seek out possible new alternatives to satisfying author needs in a changing market place. / Dissertation (MIS)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Information Science / unrestricted

Parental Portrayals in Children's Literature: 1900-2000

DeWitt, Amy L. 08 1900 (has links)
The portrayals of mothers and fathers in children's literature as companions, disciplinarians, caregivers, nurturers, and providers were documented in this research. The impact of time of publication, sex of author, award-winning status of book, best-selling status of book, race of characters, and sex of characters upon each of the five parental roles was assessed using descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation, and multinomial logistic regression techniques. A survey instrument developed for this study was completed for each of the 300 books randomly selected from the list of easy/picture books in the Children's Catalog (H.W. Wilson Company, 2001). To ensure all time periods were represented, the list was stratified by decades before sampling. It was expected that parental role portrayals would become more egalitarian and less traditional in each successive time period of publication. Male authors were expected to portray more egalitarian parental roles, and the race and sex of the young characters were not expected to influence parental portrayals. Award-winning books were expected to represent more egalitarian parental roles. Books that achieved the Publisher's Weekly all-time best-selling status were expected to portray parents in less egalitarian roles. Secondary analyses explored the prevalence of mothers' occupations, parental incompetence, and dangerous, solo child adventures. While the time of publication affected role portrayals, the evidence was unclear as to whether the changing roles represented greater egalitarianism. The race and the sex of the young characters significantly affected parental role portrayals, but the sex of the author did not influence these portrayals. While award winning and bestselling texts portrayed parents differently than books that did not achieve such honors, most did not provide enough information to adequately assess parenting roles. Half of the mothers who worked in the texts worked in conjunction with their husbands rather than independent of them. Over 10 % of mothers and fathers acted incompetently. The time of publication and the sex of the author was associated with the prevalence of solo, dangerous, child adventures. Subsequent implications and recommendations suggest the inclusion of stronger parental characters in children's books. Many of the parents are portrayed as inactive, incompetent, or neglectful. The concern is that children are exposed to these picture book portrayals during the primary years of identity acquisition.

Digital publishing in the South African trade sub-sector : lessons to learn from disruptive technology

Gaigher, S.S.E. (Susan) January 2012 (has links)
The traditional print publishing industry has been faced with significant change over the past decade. Advances in technology have led to the increased digitisation of business processes, and have debatably brought e-books to the brink of the mainstream market. With the growing popularity of e-books in the trade market come several opportunities for publishers to expand, improve and differentiate their businesses. But publishers also face a very challenging time ahead to successfully implement digital publishing in their business processes. This study examines the implications of digitisation and digital publishing on publishing business processes in the traditional print publishing environment. The research considers digital publishing as a disruptive technology in the publishing industry, and draws on the context and predictive value of disruptive technology theory. Disruptive technology theory examines why, when faced with a disruptive technology, some firms succeed in the marketplace, and others fail. The research applied the principles and predictions of disruptive technology theory to the publishing industry to develop a set of recommendations for publishers implementing digital publishing processes. The research employed a mixed methodology design that included an extensive literature review and an online survey of South African book publishers. The literature provided an overview of the issues surrounding digital publishing, and the opportunities and challenges that publishers are faced with. Literature on disruptive technology theory served to establish trends in industries faced with disruptive technology, and uncovered recommendations for its successful implementation. The researcher made use of an online survey that was sent to South African trade publishers that had already started experimenting with digital publishing in 2010 or 2011, or had plans to do so during the course of 2011 and 2012. The survey was designed to uncover the current state of digital publishing in the South African trade publishing industry, to discover the approaches that publishers are currently taking, and the barriers to implementation that they are experiencing. The research confirmed that the current state of digital publishing in South Africa, and the problems that publishers are experiencing, are characteristic of industries faced with disruptive technology. The principles of disruptive technology can therefore be applied to develop recommendations and suggest strategies for publishers planning to venture into digital publishing. Although the focus of the research was on South African trade publishers, the results and recommendations that emerged from the research can be applied to the wider international publishing industry. / Dissertation (MIS)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / gm2013 / Information Science / unrestricted

[pt] O PROCESSO DE PUBLICAÇÃO DE OBRAS LITERÁRIAS TRADUZIDAS / [en] THE PROCESS OF PUBLISHING LITERARY WORKS

LANA BETH AYRES FRANCO DE ARAUJO 29 October 2020 (has links)
[en] The present dissertation investigates the process of selecting, translating and publishing foreign literary works, with special focus on the publishing house Grupo Editorial Record, which thus represents the Brazilian publishing industry. The motivation for this study was the fact that, when buying a translated book, readers/consumers, in general, are not aware of the many stages which resulted in the product they are taking home. So this research focuses on the sequence of actions which usually unfold in the following order: the selection of the literary work to be translated and the subsequent acquisition of its copyright; the selection of the translator and the copy editor, agents who, respectively, translate the foreign text into the target language and improve the translated version; the choice of the cover and the title of the book already translated into the target language; the strategies for advertising and distributing the translated book; and lastly, the reception of this book by the literary critics and the average readership. The object of this study is thus the net of agents and activities which is promoted and articulated by the Brazilian publishing industry aiming at manufacturing a consumer good with features and purposes of its own, which are the translated literary works destined for leisure reading. Taking into account the expressive number of translated literary works published here, Brazil can be regarded as a translating culture. In contrast, hegemonic cultures such as the North American and the British ones, in general, translate less, that is, import fewer literary works for translation, being more translated instead, as they export their literary production more often. Concerning the theoretical framework here used as reference, my study is based on the following pillars: 1) the notion of literature as a polysystem, developed by Itamar Even-Zohar; 2) the understanding of translation as a phenomenon of the translating culture, by Gideon Toury; 3) the concepts of rewriting and patronage, proposed by André Lefevere; 4) the view of translation as the agent of national literature formation, promoted by Lawrence Venuti; 5) the sociologically-oriented approaches in their own right, whose prominent names are Michaela Wolf, Pascale Casanova, Daniel Simeoni, Maria Timoczko, Johan Heilbron, among others. Based on the selected bibliography and on the analysis of the data generated by the interviews carried out, it is possible to conclude that translation, traditionally and frequently examined under a linguistic viewpoint, can be also analysed under a market-driven perspective, being thus regarded as a commercial good produced to fulfill the demands of a niche of the entertainment industry. Hence, for triggering a wide range of tasks undertaken by professionals who work so as to make the product aimed at a specific group of consumers, it seems legitimate to infer that translation is a social practice, since it promotes the action of professionals not only those belonging to the publishing field, but, particularly, of text professionals such as translators.

[en] A NEW TIME FOR PLURAL NARRATIVES: IMPACTS OF CONTEMPORARY BLACK FEMALE EMPOWERMENT ON THE EDITORIAL MARKET / [pt] UM NOVO MOMENTO PARA NARRATIVAS PLURAIS: IMPACTOS DO EMPODERAMENTO NEGRO FEMININO CONTEMPORÂNEO NO MERCADO EDITORIAL

CAMILA MENDES SANTANA 14 June 2021 (has links)
[en] The title of this dissertation A new moment for plural narratives is inspired by the questions surrounding the literary work of the Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie The danger of a unique story. The book emerged from a lecture given by the Nigerian author that went viral on digital video platforms, on social networks around the world and became a literary work translated into several languages. This phenomenon guided the theme of this research that seeks to understand how the narratives of contemporary black feminism have an impact on the social construction of reality, causing an approximation of empowerment discourses on social media, giving greater visibility to black women in the publishing market. This study brings considerations about the black feminist movement and proposes a reflection on the publishing market from this perspective. To this end, it puts the concepts of violence, necropolitics, biopower and network society into dialogue with the issues that permeate the struggles against chauvinism and racism. Having as research content the professional trajectories of Chimamanda Adichie, Conceição Evaristo and Djamila Ribeiro. The research also points out questions about african diaspora, digital technologies in the field of art and literature, presenting axes of the publishing market, possible entrepreneurship and reflections on opportunities for diversity.
