Traduzindo Aslan: marcas de um tradutor nas Crônicas de Nárnia / Tanslating Aslan: fingerprints of a translation in The Chronicles of NarniaFelipe Barbosa de Aguiar 01 March 2013 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Este trabalho tem por objetivo verificar os padrões adotados para retratar o protagonista das Crônicas de Nárnia de C. S. Lewis o leão Aslan - na sua tradução para o português brasileiro. A dissertação objetiva também estabelecer se o paralelo sugerido pelo autor das Crônicas entre Aslan e a figura do Deus cristão é captado para o português brasileiro. Baseamo-nos na carta documental escrita por Lewis, na qual ele descreve a relação entre sua obra e o texto bíblico, principalmente no seu personagem principal, Aslan. Como arcabouço teórico adotado, discorremos sobre algumas correntes dos Estudos da Tradução que foram úteis para a análise do corpus o conceito de estilo e de afastamento do original e adaptação (BAKER, 1993, SHUTTLEWORTH,1999, TOURY, 1980). Como metalinguagem que nos ajuda a explicar as mudanças ocorridas entre o texto original e o texto traduzido, utilizamos a Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional, principalmente a função experiencial descrita pelos Processos (em especial os Processos Verbais), e a função interpessoal representada pela Teoria da Valoração (Appraisal). Para a análise dos textos, foi compilado um corpus paralelo contendo os sete livros da série em inglês e português e também um corpus comparável, utilizado para ratificar os resultados encontrados. Esses resultados apontam para um afastamento do texto traduzido radical em relação ao texto original no que se refere à construção do personagem Aslan, a saber: mudanças na prosódia semântica, mudanças de Força, omissões ou adições que alteram o sentido e mudança na agência dos Processos Verbais. Sugerimos que esses contrastes entre as alegorias tecidas por Lewis no texto original e o que encontramos na fala traduzida de Aslan podem alterar a percepção que se tem de Aslan como um símbolo cristão, quando reescrito em português do Brasil / This research aims to investigate the patterns adopted to portrait the central character of C. S. Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia the lion Aslan in its translation to Brazilian Portuguese. The dissertation aims also to estabilish if the parallel suggested by the author of The Chronicles between Aslan and the Christian God is captured into Brazilian Portuguese. We are grounded in the documental letter written by Lewis, in which he describes the relation between his work and the biblical text, chiefly its leading role, Aslan. As theorethical framework, we discuss some of the fields of Translation Studies that have been useful to the corpus analisys the concept of style, distancing from the original and adaptation (BAKER, 1993, SHUTTLEWORTH,1999, TOURY, 1980). As metalanguage which helps us to explain the changes in the original text and the translated text, we use the Sistemic Functional Grammar, namely the experiential function described by the Processes (in special the Verbal Processes), and the interpersonal function represented by Appraisal Theory. In order to do the analisys, a parallel corpus was compiled, containing the seven books of the series in English and Portuguese, and also a comparable corpus, used to confirm the achieved results. These results point to a radical distancing of the translated text in relation to the original text with respect to the construction of Aslans character, namely: changes in semantic prosody, changes in Force, omissions or aditions that alter the meaning and changes in the agency of Verbal Processes. We suggest that these contrasts between the allegories woven by Lewis in the original text and what we found in the translated text may modify the perception one may have of Aslan as a Christian symbol, when rewritten into Portuguese

The historical era between 1850 and 1950 is known to be a turbulent period reflected not only in adult literature but also in the texts written for children. This unusually rich period in terms of political, social and ideological development certainly influenced most parts of the world. However, it was particularly important for England mainly for the transition of the Victorian era and Edwardian period to the modern history initiated by the WW I. Throughout this period many new ideologies arose and scientific discoveries were more numerous than ever. In 1859, for instance, Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection was published and initiated the still on-going war period between Christianity and science. At the same time, the concept of childhood started to be understood in a different way and books written for children became a common commodity converting the end of 18th century in the Golden Age of children's literature. However, according to Peter Hunt's publication Understanding Children's Literature, 'all texts are inevitably infused by ideologies'. Truth incarnate : story as sacrament in the mythopoeic thought and fiction of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. TolkienBuchanan, Travis Walker January 2015 (has links)
The thesis is organized as two sections of two chapters each: the first section establishes a theoretical framework of a broad and reinvigorated Christian sacramentality within which to situate the second—an investigation of the theories and practice of the mythopoeic art of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien in this sacramental light. The first chapter acknowledges the thoroughgoing disenchantment of modernity, an effect traced to the vanishing of a sacramental understanding of the world, and then explores the history of the sacramental concept that would seek to be reclaimed and reconceived as a possible means of the re-enchantment of Western culture such as in the recent work of David Brown. An appreciative critique of Brown's work is offered in chapter two before proposing an alternative understanding of a distinctly Christian and reinvigorated sacramentality anchored in the Incarnation and operating by Transposition. A notion of sacramental vision is developed from the perceptual basis in its classic definitions, and a sacramental understanding of story is considered from a theological perspective on the infinite generativity of meaning in texts, along with recent theories of affect and affordance. The second half of the thesis expounds the views of mythopoeia held by Lewis and Tolkien in order to show how they are not only compatible with but lead to a sacramental understanding of story as developed in part one, with mythopoeia affording the recovery of a potentially transformative vision of reality, awakening it into focus in distinctly Christian ways (chapter three). The final chapter demonstrates how their mythopoeic theories are exemplified in their art, examining specific ways Till We Have Faces and The Lord of the Rings afford the recovery of a potentially transformative vision of various themes central to them. In closing it is suggested that such a sacramental understanding of story may contribute to the re-enchantment of Western culture, not to mention the re-mythologization and re-envisaging of Christianity, whose significance in these regards has been hitherto mostly unrecognized.

Nesta dissertação investigamos como a ficção envolve o leitor. Para isso, partimos da rejeição a Homero declarada por Calímaco, observando que a suposta diferença entre a literatura preferida pelo público e a literatura preferida pela crítica depende de dois fatores distintos. O primeiro é o simples fato de a crítica ler profissionalmente e o público ler por prazer. O segundo está relacionado à distinção entre recepção e uso da literatura proposta por C.S. Lewis. Na recepção, a obra tende a ser admirada por si; no uso, tende a ser instrumentalizada como suporte para um devaneio em que os desejos do próprio leitor são vicariamente satisfeitos. Observamos que essa devaneio, que Lewis chama de construção egoísta de castelos, e que inclui uma variante mórbida, tem um paralelo na noção girardiana do duplo angélico. Contudo, o devaneio depende da simpatia como definida por Adam Smith, a qual por sua vez depende de certa aprovação moral. Investigamos portanto o tipo de personagem que conquista a aprovação moral do leitor, contrastando os heróis homéricos com os cavaleiros cristãos a fim de verificar como o cristianismo dirige a aprovação moral para as vítimas, fazendo com que os heróis da ficção sejam pessoas perseguidas ou marginalizadas. / In this dissertation we investigate how fiction involves the reader. Starting Callimachuss rejection of Homer, we note that the supposed diference between the literature favoured by the public at large and the literature preferred by critics is actually twofold. First, critics read for business and the public reads for pleasure. Second, as proposed by C.S. Lewis, there is a distinction between the reception and use of literature. In reception, a work tends to be admired in itself, whereas in use it becomes a mere support for a sort of daydreaming in which the readers own desires are vicariously satisfied. We discuss this daydreaming called egotistic castle-building by Lewis, highlighting its morbid variant, which finds a parallel in the Girardian notion of the angelic double, developed from a reading of Proust. Now, as egotistic castle-building in its turn depends on sympathy as defined by Adam Smith, a concept which includes moral approval, we investigate the types of characters who obtain the moral approval of readers, contrasting the warriors from Homers poems with Christian knights in order to show that Christianity directs moral approval towards the victims. In a Christian society, fictional heroes must be people who are persecuted or at least marginalised.

The reception of C.S. Lewis in Britain and AmericaDerrick, Stephanie Lee January 2013 (has links)
Since the publication of the book The Screwtape Letters in 1942, ‘C. S. Lewis’ has been a widely recognized name in both Britain and the United States. The significance of the writings of this scholar of medieval literature, Christian apologist and author of the children’s books The Chronicles of Narnia, while widely recognized, has not previously been investigated. Using a wide range of sources, including archival material, book reviews, monographs, articles and interviews, this dissertation examines the reception of Lewis in Britain and America, comparatively, from within his lifetime until the recent past. To do so, the methodology borrows from the history of the book and history of reading fields, and writes the biography of Lewis’s Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia. By contextualizing the writing of these works in the 1940s and 1950s, the evolution of Lewis’s respective platforms in Britain and America and these works’ reception across the twentieth century, this project contributes to the growing body of work that interrogates the print culture of Christianity. Extensive secondary reading, moreover, permitted the investigation of cultural, intellectual, social and religious factors informing Lewis’s reception, the existence of Lewis devotees in America and the lives of Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia in particular. By paying close attention to the historical conditions of authorship, publication and reception, while highlighting similarities and contrasts between Britain and America, this dissertation provides a robust account of how and why Lewis became one of the most successful Christian authors of the twentieth century.

This work describes a special kind of story about the journey there and back again or journey to gain experience. The nature of this narrative is given by the presence of several key points: the existence of primary and secondary world, wandering throughout secondary world, the transformation of a hero and a reader, homecoming. Presented definition of the story is the starting point from which are being searched connections with the professional disciplines of social work and ethics. In social work the diagram of these trips back and forth presents acquiring an expertise in various scientific fields. For plane of ethics it is particularly significant credibility of the moment from this journey back and forth when the story of the hero and the reader becomes a good (or bad) story positive or negative.
