LUCIA HELENA MELO CIPRIANO 28 May 2007 (has links)
[en] Technological revolutions have brought about dramatic changes in the world and in the ways people live, think, behave and feel. The purpose of the present study is to understand how the arrival of cell phones has affected the ways employees in the contemporary labor market live their private and professional lives. For this purpose, professionals who have children and whose cell phone accounts are paid for by their companies were interviewed. All of them lived and worked in Rio de Janeiro. Their answers showed that there is no frontier between their professional and private lives; cell phone use makes their working and professional lives mingle. In addition, the results revealed that the lives of those who took part in the present study have become more agile due to the fact they can both work and contact their homes and family at any time, no matter where they are. However, these professionals, who can also be easily reached by means of their cell phones, feel that they have to be available to their employers all the time in order to quickly solve their daily demands by phone. The cell phone, in the same way as the computer and the e-mail, has become a working tool. The interviewees admitted they could not imagine their daily lives without those tools. The interviews also showed that new habits have been created as a result of the constant use of those tools. Among these new habits are the administration of home and family from any distance and the possibility of work remotely.

FRANCISCO EDUARDO T C DE MOURA 25 April 2007 (has links)
[en] Image Based Rendering (IBR) is a strong tendence in visualization due to the high quality of the images. One of the most complex problems is the 2D/3D object composition in a panorama. The use of IBR in limited platforms, like cell phones, faces a number of problems and the literature is scarse. This work analizes the possibility of implementing IBR with active objects in cell phones. A prototype is presented and results are analyzed.

[en] THE FAST OBSOLESCENCE OF CELL PHONES: WHAT YOUNG USERS OF THIS TECHONOLOGY THINK AND FEEL ABOUT IT / [pt] A VELOZ OBSOLESCÊNCIA DOS APARELHOS CELULARES: O QUE PENSAM E SENTEM JOVENS USUÁRIOS DESTA TECNOLOGIA

PRISCILLA DA SILVA MARX ANDRADE 11 August 2008 (has links)
[en] We live in a time of ever-increasing technological changes. Nowadays, we can clearly see a significant growth in the number of cell phone users, which shows how fast the this market is expanding. The purpose of the present study was to find out how middle class young people deal with the obsolescence, consumption and constant innovations in cell phones. To reach this goal, a qualitative study was carried out with 15 young people, both male and female, whose average age was 26. Most of them were professionals and had a university degree. All had been intensively using cell phones for more than 5 years. The interviews were carried out on-line through the MSN Messenger chat program. The results showed that cell phones play a central role in their lives. Most of the interviewees admitted that they always carry their cell phones and never switch them off. However, in what concerns their consumption, the participants` statements were contradictory. Most of the interviewees keep the same model of cell phone for a short period of time, providing a host of different reasons for changing it. They all say that a new model should be bought only in case of malfunction of the previous one. However, all of them admit changing phones long before this happens. And the reasons for this behavior lie in the fact that they are attracted by the constant technological innovations.

Factors affecting drivers willingness to engage with a mobile phone while driving

Hancox, Graham January 2013 (has links)
This thesis investigates drivers willingness to engage with a mobile phone while driving. Many studies have looked into the effects on driving performance that can result from phone usage, but few studies have directly considered what can encourage or inhibit phone engagement behaviours in the first place. An initial exploratory study (Study 1) was conducted, for which a photo elicitation interview (N=20) was designed and implemented. This aimed to find the extent to which factors influencing phone use transferred from out of the car to the driving environment. In particular, the study aimed to explore whether the driving environment could be considered unique. The results indicated that the high demands placed on the driver by the road environment clearly distinguished it from the other environments and the reported propensity to use a phone seemed to reflect this. Only factors which either changed the level of attention required by the task, such as a change in task demand as a result of changes in the traffic environment, had any substantial influence on willingness to engage. Driving may not be unique in terms of the overall factors influencing phone use but it is unique in the extent to which this particular factor seems to have such a strong bearing on interaction. Building on findings from Study 1, that the demand and attention required seemed to influence willingness to engage, it was noted that Fuller s (2005) Task Capability Interface model would serve as a useful framework for the remainder of the thesis. This model suggests that driver behaviour is dictated by the level of task difficulty perceived; an interaction between task demand and capability. Therefore, the effects these two elements might have on willingness to engage with mobile phones while driving were tested separately in the two remaining studies. Previous research suggested that task demand should comprise a combination of roadway demand and the intended phoning task. Study 2, therefore, experimentally tested the extent to which road demand and phone function intended to be used influenced drivers decisions to engage with their phone. Participants (N=20) viewed video clips of real road environments of varying demand. Rating scales were used by participants to rate their willingness to engage with various phone functions according to the scenario they had just viewed. It was found both roadway demand and phone functionality affected willingness to engage with a mobile phone whilst driving. There was a higher propensity to engage in phone use in road environments perceived to have a lower demand and lower propensity to engage in phone use in the highest demand scenarios. Answering a call was the most likely function to be engaged with by the participants and sending a text message was the least likely. The final study investigated how capability (comprising both phone and driving capability) influenced willingness to engage. Participants (N=40) were required to drive in a simulator under two conditions, simulated low and high road demand. Their willingness to interact with their phones, when faced with a number of phone tasks, was then observed. It was found that driving capability had an effect on willingness to engage in high demand scenarios with the less capable, novice, drivers having a higher propensity to engage with placing a call, sending a text message and reading a text message than the more experienced drivers. Novice drivers were willing to engage with some functions on their phone at possibly inappropriate times. It was further found that, in the simulated low demand road environment, phone capability influenced willingness to engage, with those who were more capable at placing a call and sending a text message found to be more willing to engage with these functions. The research reported in this thesis represents the first attempt in the literature to study, in depth, the factors which can influence phone engagement behaviour while driving. Novel contributions include investigating if factors influencing phone use transferred from out of the car to the driving environment. Further novel contributions included whether the phone function and road demand interact to influence willingness to engage and whether capability can affect phone engagement behaviour while driving. Extending the model developed by Fuller, the thesis offers an original model that describes the factors affecting phone engagement behaviour while driving. Suggestions are proposed for how the findings presented in this thesis can effectively be used and how future work should build on these initial foundations.

The Impact of Cell Phone Towers on House Prices's Research

Ho,Chung-Nan Unknown Date (has links)
The cellular phone towers has become another NIMBY, although the absence of domestic research for how detract from real estate's value. The article first use the Questionnaire Investigation method’s way to realize that people’s opinion of cellular phone towers and cognition of the effective level of cellular phone towers on house’s price ; secondly use Hedonic Price Method on real estate's value, by using Regression Analysis’s way to prove the impact of cellular phone towers on house’s price . In which we found no matter Questionnaire Investigation or Regression Analysis both announces that the effective level of cellular phone towers on house’s price is negative, there are up to 54.4% of subjects involved in the survey though that the negative influence is above 10% ; on Hedonic Price Method’s way, the house whereabouts higher stairs on the area of researchs, its price is more easy effected by cellular phone towers than the lower one. And the house's price is effected by the distance of cellular phone towers that the average of detractive level is about 2.35%.Only the effect on cellular phone towers of the cause of visual by house price was not broad.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Juliana Maria Constantino.pdf: 7783608 bytes, checksum: a834d832f6e196b4d29b2362500afbe3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-10-14 / Diversity and popularization of the wireless equipment used for telephony, listening to music and personal organization are grabbing attention to these mobile devices. The low prices, especially of mobile phones, require a critical study of their interfaces, as it has became one of the cores of contemporary communication. The goal of this research is to investigate models of navigation adopted by products that access the Internet, developed for portable devices - be it web sites, or applications - with focus on the complexity of the communication system involved in this context and the methodology of development of these interfaces. The survey was conducted from a site developed for the launch of a product's auto industry, whose presence on-line started with a website exclusively "mobile" in August 2007. In this analysis, were considered: the launch of the car, study of public and habits of interaction with mobile services, creative strategy, information architecture / general guidelines of the interface and result. It was also part of the analysis the behavior of guidelines for interface in popular cel phones (low-cost) and in multifunctional models like multimedia phones, smartphones or the iPhone, considering the the heterogeneous Brazilian cellphone base (in terms of technical capability of equipment and plans pre and post-paid), which reflects the relationship among holder-interaction-network. The theoretical North of the research was " Towards a Philosophy of Photography " by Vilém Flusser and all the discussion happened in the light of the latest literature on the information architecture, design, interface and communication theory's post-media: Lev Manovich, William Mitchell , Manuel Castells, Andre Lemos, Giselle Beiguelman and Lucia Santaella, among other no less important. The analysis resulted in a critical view on the situations of use of different features of wireless devices, focusing mainly in the creative process involved on the construction of such interfaces - considering legacies of the fixed Internet - and the relationship between public and equipment / A diversidade e popularização dos equipamentos sem-fio (wireless) usados para telefonia, consumo de música e organização pessoal pedem atenção a esses dispositivos móveis.

Addressing Relationships among Moral Judgment Development, Narcissism, and Electronic Media and Communication Devices

Saculla, Meghan M. 01 August 2010 (has links)
Recently, Thoma and Bebeau (2008) reported moral judgment developmental trends among various samples of undergraduates and graduates where increases in Personal Interests reasoning and decreases in Postconventional reasoning were observed. In an attempt to explain such trends, they cited recent trends in increased narcissism among college students (Twenge, Konrath, Foster, Campbell, & Bushman, 2008) and also noted that certain types of technological devices (i.e. social networking websites, cell phones, etc.) may have adverse effects social decision-making and self-presentation. The current study, therefore, addresses the relationships among moral judgment development, narcissism, and electronic media and communication devices (EMCD's). Analyses support that the extent of EM CD usage, as well as the reasons for usage, contribute to decreased Postconventional reasoning, but have a negligible effect on Personal Interests reasoning.

Trådlöst internet på fartygsbryggan : En litteraturstudie om hur användandet av trådlös internetuppkoppling på fartygsbryggan kan påverka individen som operatör och fartygets drift / Wireless internet on the bridge : A literature review of how usage of wireless internet connection on the bridge affects the individual as an operator and the operating of the ship

Hermansson Össtein, Karl, Fredriksson, Philip January 2015 (has links)
This report describes a literature study that examines the wireless local area network (WLAN) aboard the vessels bridge. Society is constantly evolving and the usage of electronic devices with access to the Internet is constantly increasing. The aim of the work was to investigate the wireless connection´s advantages, disadvantages, as well as its positive and negative effects. A literature review was performed and together with the analysis based on a mind map. The results suggests that more negative effects than positive comes with being connected on the vessel´s bridge. The conclusions that can be drawn are that increased availability leads to increased usage. This use affects the individual's focus and health negatively. It can also affect sleep negatively where both quantity and quality deteriorates. The positive aspects WLAN can contribute to are increased well-being of the individual as well as facilitate the work by linking devices together. It is important to optimize the workplace so that health risks are minimized. WLAN generally has a negative effect on the bridge watch. The possibilities that come with WLAN are few in relation to the risks.
