ESTUDO DA VIABILIDADE TÉCNICA DA APLICAÇÃO DE SOLO SAPROLÍTICO MELHORADO COM CIMENTO COMO BASE DE PAVIMENTO DE BAIXO CUSTO / THE STUDY OF THE TECHNICAL VIABILITY OF APPLYING IMPROVED SAPROLITE SOIL WITH CEMENT AS BASES FOR LOW COST PAVEMENT

Jurach, Aline 28 December 2013 (has links)
When analyzing the road network of the country, it is noticed that the extension of paved roads is very small. This fact is mainly due to reduced public resources and the high costs of traditional materials utilized in the paving of roads. Increasingly performing pavements requires the utilization of local materials, which do not always have the technical properties that meet the valid standards. Thus, it is necessary the search for products or mechanisms that improve these features and that make possible the utilization of local materials to replace conventional materials. The use of cement has been, long-standing, a good additive to improve the properties of soils. This dissertation presents the results of a saprolite soil of volcanic rock, improved with cement, located in the city of Silveira Martins-RS, for application as base layer in roads of low traffic volume. The analysis seeks to avail of the concepts of Soil Mechanics along with knowledge of the Mechanical Pavement. In this research were performed, among others, characterization tests, soil classification, determination of the California Bearing Ratio (CBR), Compressive Strenght (CS), Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) and triaxial tests of repeated loads to determine the Resilient Modulus (RM). With the results of the tests cited, it was held the mechanistic analysis, through the SisPav program in order to analyze the potential use of improved soil with cement in substitution of a conventional material. The results demonstrate that the use of these studied soils meet the normative specifications and have great potential for utilization as bases of pavement on highways with low traffic volume.

Compostos sulfurados em asfaltos: influência do processo de envelhecimento na composição das frações maltênicas e asfaltênicas / Sulphur compounds in asphalts: influence of the aging process on the composition of the maltenic and asphaltenic fractions

Claussen, Luís Evandro 05 August 2013 (has links)
The behavior of sulfur compounds in asphalt cements can be studied in a more comprehensive way through the separation of maltenes and asphaltenes and their respective fractions. Thus, the ASTM D4124 method was applied for the separation of maltenes and asphaltenes in acidic, basic and neutral fractions of súlfur compounds. Herein, it could be observed that the sulfur heteroatom appears in higher levels as a less reactive fraction (neutral compounds) for virgin asphalts. The aging process lead to an increase of at least 20% for the polar fractions of sulfur, which is related to here to acidic and basic sulfur compounds. From this speciation results, a classification of the asphalt samples can be proposed taking into account the calculated reactivity in terms of polar (acidic/basic) and neutral compounds. These results permit to infer that a higher content of asphaltenes does not necessarily imply in a higher reactivity of the asphaltic binder. So the presence of specific functional groups related to these heteroatoms (e.g. sulfur) may be definitive for a greater or lesser susceptibility of the binder to the aging processes.

Stein, Ronei Tiago 28 March 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Currently, it is increasing the search for alternatives to minimize the environmental impact on inputs production. Concrete, highly polluting, is the second most natural material used by man, losing just for the water. Mineral additions have been investigated as partial replacement of cement in concrete, because, besides of providing the use of industrial waste, it can offer improvements in material characteristics. This study analyzed the microstructure of cement pastes composed by sludge produced in water treatment plants (WTP). Seven different traces were investigated: a reference one and 6 traces adding WTP sludge ash in different levels of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30%. Each trace has been developed to three water/binder (w/b) ratios (0.35, 0.50 and 0.65), ending in 21 different traces, which were studied for different healing ages. Assays of Calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA), setting time, DRX, porosity by mercury intrusion (PIM), chemically combined water, electrical conductivity and hydrogen potential (pH); were performed. From the results, it appears that the increased cement replacement content by WTP sludge ash resulted in an increase in the start and end times of the setting time and decrease in electric conductivity and pH testing. Likewise, a reduction in remnant CH amounts with the increase in WTP sludge ash content shown in TG and XRD tests, as well as reduction in hydration heat because of less formation of side C-S-H. The results for combined chemical water increased when the relations w/b and the WTP sludge ash also increased. When compared to the reference mixture, the increase in WTP sludge ash content resulted in PIM values and the like, although an increase is found in the total area of pores due to change in pore size distribution.

Savadogo, Nafissatou 15 July 2017 (has links)
This research is part of a process of valorization of local industrial by-products in the cement industry. lt focuses on the possibility f using coal bottom ash powder produced by SONICHAR in Niger as cement partial addition. After a physicochemical and environmental characterization of the coal bottom ash powder, we determined its pozzolanic reactivity and it mechanical activity index. The results show that the coal bottom ash powder presents a pozzolanicity whose relatively slow kinetics do ne start before 14 days. On the other hand, this coal bottom ash can be considered as a mineral addition of type 11 according to the standard EN 206-1 with an activity index of 0.76. This is why we used it to develop three CEM 11/A composite cements with a strength class of 42.5 when the substitution rate is 10% and a strength class of 32.5 when the rate of substitution is 15% and 20%. Normal mortars have been formulated with these cements and are characterized physically and mechanically. The durability of the mortars has also been studied, in particular from the point of view of the kinetics of carbonation and leaching in the presence of ammonium nitrate. Finally, it appears that the coal bottom ash powder may indeed be incorporated as an addition in the preparation of composite cements. The long-term mechanical characteristics (90 days) and the durability of the mortars made from these cements are preserved when the substitution rate does not exceed 10%.

The biological and physical performance of high strength dicalcium phosphate cement in physiologically relevant models

Pujari-Palmer, Michael January 2017 (has links)
The chemical properties of calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) are very similar to the mineral phase of bone. CPCs are, consequently, very effective substrates (scaffolds) for tissue engineering; bone and stem cells attach readily, and can proliferate and differentiate to form new bone tissue. Unlike other CPCs that may remain largely unchanged in the body for years, such as hydroxyapatite, dicalcium phosphates are remodelled by the body and rapidly converted to new bone. Unfortunately, the dicalcium phosphates are also typically too weak to support load bearing in the human body. Our laboratory has recently developed a novel, high strength brushite CPC, (hsCPC), which can reach 10-50 fold higher failure strength than many commercially available CPCs. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the physical, chemical and biological performance of hsCPCs in physiologically relevant model of drug release, load bearing, osteoconductivity, and as a scaffold for bone tissue engineering. Multiple CPCs were compared in a model of screw augmentation to determine whether the physical properties of the cement, such as bulk strength and porosity, affected orthopedic screw holding strength. In an in vitro model of bone regeneration stem cells were grown on macroporous scaffolds that were fabricated from hsCPC. Drug releasing scaffolds were fabricated to examine whether the low porosity of hsCPC impeded drug release during a 4 week incubation period. The biological activity of an incorporated drug, Rebamipide, was examined after acute and chronic incubation periods. In the drug release study it was noted that the biological response to hsCPC was significantly better than tissue culture grade polystyrene, even in groups without drug. The mechanism underlying this biological response was further investigated by testing the effect of pyrophosphate, a common cement additive, on bone cell proliferation and differentiation. This thesis concludes that a high strength cement can produce significant improvement in screw augmentation strength, if there is sufficient cortical bone near the augmentation site. The hsCPC is also cytocompatible, and can support bone and stem cell proliferation and differentiation. hsCPC scaffolds stimulated osteogenic gene expression comparable to native bone scaffolds. hsCPC scaffolds are also capable of delivering drug for up to 4 weeks, in vitro. Finally, a cement additive, pyrophosphate, stimulated differentiation, but not proliferation of bone cells.

Influence des ions lithium et borate sur l'hydratation de ciments sulfo-alumineux : application au conditionnement de résines échangeuses d'ions boratées / Influence of lithium and boron ions on calcium sulfoaluminate cement hydration : application for the conditioning of boron ion exchange resins

Dhoury, Mélanie 10 November 2015 (has links)
In pressurized water reactors, a solution of boric acid, the pH of which is controlled by the addition of lithium hydroxide, is injected in the primary circuit. Boron acts as a neutron moderator and helps controlling the fission reactions. The primary coolant is purified by flowing through columns of ion exchange resins. These resins are periodically renewed and constitute a low-level radioactive waste. In addition to radionuclides, they mainly contain borate and lithium ions. They are currently encapsulated in an organic matrix before being stored in a near-surface repository. An evolution of the process is considered, involving the replacement of the organic matrix by a mineral one.In this PhD study, the potential of calcium sulfoaluminate cements (CSAC) to solidify / stabilize borated resins in the presence of lithium is investigated. These binders have the advantage to form hydrates which can incorporate borate ions in their structure, and their hydration is less retarded than that of Portland cement. An analytical approach is adopted, based on a progressive increase in the complexity of the investigated systems. Hydration of ye'elimite-rich CSAC is thus successively investigated in the presence of (i) lithium salts, (ii) lithium hydroxide and sodium borate, and (iii) lithium hydroxide and borated ion exchange resins. The experimental investigation is supplemented by thermodynamic modelling using a database specially developed for the needs of the study.Lithium ions are shown to accelerate CSAC hydration by decreasing the duration of the period of low thermal activity. The postulated mechanism involves the precipitation of lithium-containing aluminum hydroxide. On the contrary, sodium borate retards CSAC hydration by increasing the duration of the period of low thermal activity. Ulexite, a poorly crystallized mineral containing sodium and borates, transiently precipitates at early age. As long as ulexite is present, dissolution of ye'elimite is strongly slowed down. When sodium borate and lithium hydroxide are simultaneously introduced in the mixing solution, these two mechanisms are superimposed. With a gypsum-free cement, a third process is additionally observed: lithium promotes the initial precipitation of a borated AFm phase which is later converted into a borated AFt phase when hydration accelerates. Finally, based on the achieved results, a cement-based formulation is designed for the encapsulation of borated resins. Its properties fulfill the requirements for a conditioning matrix over the duration of the study.

Développement de matériaux cimentaires à base de sous-produits bois : mise en forme par extrusion et vibrocompactage / Development of cementitious materials based on wood by-products : shaping by extrusion and vibrocompaction

Ndong Engone, Jean Gérard 01 December 2015 (has links)
In France, the waste wood deposit product in companies of first and second transformation is estimated at about twelve million tons per year. 60\% of this waste comes mainly from mills in the form of sawdust and wood chips. There are many methods of recovery of such waste, which in turn causes environmental problems through the use of products harmful to the environment. A new challenge is to find ways and means to sustainable and consistent recovery of such waste. A new challenge is to find ways and means to sustainable and consistent recovery of such waste. The recovery of such waste in construction materials could be a sustainable solution. In this context, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Council initiated a project for the recovery of such wastes by developing new building materials from wood byproducts. This thesis has been intended to develop biocomposites based on cement paste and sawdust resulting from Poplar species. These biocomposites are designed for be used as part-bearing masonry and are subject to mechanical strength criteria set by the French standard. The study of the influence of sawdust on the mechanical, rheological and physico-chemical of a mortar was performed by replacing the sand by sawdust at rates ranging from 10 to 100 \%. The results obtained showed a loss of mechanical strength with increasing volume of wood in the mixture generated by chemical phenomena. However the compressive strength obtained for significant substitution rate (50 to 60\%) were in accordance with the French standard. These results led to the optimization of a wood mortar formulation met can be extruded using a ram extruder. In order to apply the development of these biocomposites in an industrial scale, the sawdust was introduced into a formulation of micro-concrete used in the production of industrial concrete blocks manufactured by vibro-compaction. The results showed that up to 50\% of substitution of sand by the sawdust, the mechanical properties were compliant. The thermal characterization of the blocks showed an interesting insulation capacity.
