Metáfora Conceptual e Libras: uma abordagem cognitiva da surdez / Conceptual methaphor and Libras: a cognitive approach of deafness

O percurso histórico das representações da surdez, da educação de surdos e do estatuto da língua de sinais aponta para a necessidade de uma reflexão sobre as relações entre língua, cognição e cultura. Um estudo direcionado à identificação das estruturas conceptuais subjacentes à língua falada pelos surdos -a Libras- pode contribuir com algumas considerações pertinentes sobre a questão surdez/cultura, além de contribuir para desmistificar possíveis preconceitos relacionados à língua de sinais. A linguística cognitiva (LC), ciência que engloba os aspectos cognitivos envolvidos na significação, a influência do contexto para a compreensão/produção da linguagem e a forma como o mundo é experienciado individualmente e culturalmente, revela-se como um embasamento teórico adequado ao desenvolvimento de tal reflexão, uma vez que abarca dentre suas áreas de interesse o estudo dos mecanismos cognitivos de conceptualização e expressão da realidade, dentre os quais se inserem os modelos cognitivos e culturais, a metáfora e a metonímia conceptuais. Levando-se em conta que na LC a concepção de metáfora, estabelecida pela Teoria da Metáfora Conceptual (TMC), à luz de Lakoff e Johnson (2002[1980]) e Kövecses (2002, 2003, 2005), considera a metáfora como um mecanismo conceptual em que os seres humanos empregam um domínio experiencial mais concreto, estreitamente ligado à experiência com o próprio corpo e o mundo em que vivem, para compreender/conceptualizar um domínio mais abstrato; buscou-se, neste estudo, verificar a aplicabilidade de tal teoria na língua brasileira de sinais (Libras), hipotetizando-se que as metáforas conceptuais podem ser identificadas em qualquer língua, mesmo uma língua visuo-espacial, e que as manifestações metafóricas encontradas na Libras podem refletir as especificidades da cultura surda, bem como aspectos provenientes da cultura ouvinte devido à influência cultural gerada por sua inserção nesta cultura. A pesquisa realizada desenvolveu-se sob abordagem qualitativa/descritiva, com análise de um corpus heterogêneo da Libras, composto por sinais isolados, vídeos e transcrições de interações terapêuticas. Os resultados apontam não só para a manifestação da metáfora conceptual na Libras, como também para a manifestação de aspectos semânticos e fonológicos subjacentes à iconicidade cognitiva nos termos de (Wilcox, P. 2004) da Libras. Trata-se de um levantamento inicial, mas que fornece elementos para alguns questionamentos sobre o aspecto conceptual e cognitivo da iconicidade e sobre o alcance da TMC e sua relação com língua e cultura / The historical course of deafness representations, deaf education and the status of sign language shows require of relationship reflection between language, cognition and culture. A study directed on conceptual structures underlying the language spoken by deafs Libras- can cooperate with some relevant considerations in question deafness / culture, and contribute for demystifying possible prejudices about sign language. The cognitive linguistics (CL), science that encompasses the cognitive aspects involving significance, context influence for language understanding/production and the way like world is experienced individually and culturally, revealed like theoretical basis for more functional development of such reflection, once its include interest areas the study about mechanisms cognitive conceptualization expression of reality, which fall within cognitive and cultural models, conceptual metaphor and metonymy. Taking into account that the design of the LC metaphor established by the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor (TMC) postulated by Lakoff and Johnson (2002 [1980]) and extended by Kövecses (2002, 2003, 2005) considers metaphor as a conceptual mechanism in which humans employ a more concrete experiential field, linked to experiment with their bodies and the world they live, to understand / conceptualize a more abstract domain. In this study we try to verify the applicability of this theory in the Brazilian sign language (Libras) hypothesizing that the conceptual metaphors can be identified in any language, even a sign language, and the metaphorical expressions founded in Libras may reflect the specificities of the deaf culture and aspects of listener culture, cultural influence generated by their inclusion in this culture. The research developed a qualitative /descriptive, approach, with analysis of heterogeneous corpus, composed of isolated signs, videos and transcripts of therapeutic interactions. The results show the manifestation of conceptual metaphor in Libras,and expression of semantic and phonology aspects underlying iconicity of Brazilian sign language. This is an initial survey, but which provides guidance for some questions about the conceptual and cognitive aspect of iconicity, and the scope of the CMT and its relation to language and culture

Dos manuais didÃticos à compreensÃo do aprendiz: a relevÃncia da metÃfora no ensino-aprendizagem de inglÃs como lÃngua estrangeira (ILE)

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / Considerando que os mÃtodos e abordagens desenvolvidos ao longo dos sÃculos pouco exploraram a metÃfora e reconhecendo a sua importÃncia no processo de ensino/aprendizagem de InglÃs como LÃngua Estrangeira (ILE), este estudo investiga esse seu papel como elemento facilitador, tanto descrevendo o tratamento que lhe à dado nos manuais didÃticos, quanto analisando se a instruÃÃo sobre mapeamentos metafÃricos e esquemas imagÃticos pertinentes à linguagem figurada contribui para uma melhor compreensÃo do aprendiz. Este trabalho apresenta inicialmente a visÃo clÃssica da metÃfora, que priorizou a lÃgica e a abstraÃÃo, contrapondo, a essa perspectiva, a visÃo experiencialista, que considera a metÃfora instrumento de organizaÃÃo e produÃÃo cognitiva. Essa visÃo tem como base a Teoria da MetÃfora Conceitual, de Lakoff e Johnson (1980, 1999) e as valiosas contribuiÃÃes de Grady (1997a). A metodologia adotada em cada uma das duas investigaÃÃes: a documental (que examinou a abordagem nos manuais didÃticos) e a semi-experimental (que tem o seu foco na anÃlise do papel da metÃfora como facilitadora da compreensÃo do aprendiz de lÃngua estrangeira), assim como todos os procedimentos adotados para obtenÃÃo e anÃlise dos dados sÃo, entÃo, descritos. Em seguida, os resultados sÃo apresentados e discutidos. / Based on the fact that teaching/learning methods and approaches developed in previous centuries haven`t focused on metaphor and taking into account how important it has become to the teaching/learning of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), this study investigates the role of metaphor as an element which can favor this process.This investigation not only describes the treatment which is given to it in sets of books used in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses, but also evaluates if the instruction on metaphoric mappings and image schemas which belong in the figurative language contribute to a better understanding on the learner`s part. First, it presents the traditional view of metaphor, which emphasized logic and abstraction, in opposition to the experiential view, which considers metaphor an instrument of cognitive organization and production. This concept is based on Lakoff and Johnson`s (1980, 1999) Theory of Conceptual Metaphor, as well as on Grady`s (1997a) important contributions. The methods used in the documental investigation (which examines the approach in the sets of books), and those used in the semi-experimental one (which investigates if metaphor favors the learner`s understanding), as well as all the proceedings used to obtain and analyze the specific data are then described. Following that, the results are presented and discussed.

nÃo hà / A Teoria da MetÃfora Conceptual (TMC) proposta por Lakoff e Johnson (1980) inaugurou pesquisas tendo como objeto de investigaÃÃo a metÃfora como elemento do raciocÃnio. Nesta perspectiva, este estudo analisou as metÃforas POLÃTICA EXTERNA à GUERRA e POLÃTICA EXTERNA à COMÃRCIO. Para tanto, partiu-se da hipÃtese de que os conceitos GUERRA e COMÃRCIO sÃo centrais na conceptualizaÃÃo de POLÃTICA EXTERNA. Inicialmente, discutiu-se o conceito da metÃfora pela perspectiva da LinguÃstica Cognitiva. Em seguida, descreveram-se os procedimentos da pesquisa. O corpus analisado sÃo exemplos retirados de textos da revista Veja on-line publicados no primeiro e terceiro trimestres de 2009. A coleta dos exemplos foi realizada com a ajuda da suÃte de programas WordSmith tools. Foram identificados os elementos constituintes dos trÃs domÃnios que estruturam as metÃforas como tambÃm as correspondÃncias conceptuais estabelecidas entre eles. Os resultados revelados pela anÃlise das metÃforas indicaram que POLÃTICA EXTERNA à um conceito cuja construÃÃo nÃo prescinde dos domÃnios GUERRA e COMÃRCIO. Os mapeamentos conceptuais identificados formam uma rede coerente tanto de metÃforas como de metonÃmias. Os domÃnios se mostram fortemente imbricados e se relacionam atravÃs de projeÃÃes metafÃricas e metonÃmicas. Esses dois mecanismos da cogniÃÃo atuam conjuntamente na estruturaÃÃo do conceito-alvo POLÃTICA EXTERNA. Verificou-se que os trÃs domÃnios compartilham uma conceptualizaÃÃo comum, sendo possÃvel categorizÃ-los como INTERAÃÃES COM PROPÃSITOS. A correspondÃncia existente entre os domÃnios possibilitam uma melhor compreensÃo do conceito POLÃTICA EXTERNA. A conceptualizaÃÃo metafÃrica de POLÃTICA EXTERNA nÃo sà à compatÃvel com a compreensÃo teÃrica de polÃtica, como tambÃm com a prÃpria dinÃmica das relaÃÃes internacionais, em que o poder econÃmico anda de mÃos dadas com o poder militar. / The conceptual metaphor theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) triggered researches which aimed to investigate metaphor as an element for reasoning. It is from this perspective that this study has analyzed the metaphors INTERNATIONAL POLITICS IS WAR and INTERNATIONAL POLITICS IS COMMERCE. It was hypothesized that the concepts WAR and COMMERCE are central to the conceptualization of INTERNATIONAL POLITICS. Initially we discussed the definition for metaphor from the Cognitive Linguistics perspective. Then, we described the research procedure. The corpus analyzed consists of excerpts extracted from Veja magazine texts published online in the first and third quarters of 2009. We compiled the text excerpts with the help of the Wordsmith tools suite of programs. We identified the elements belonging to the three conceptual domains which structure the metaphors in study as well as the conceptual correspondences these domains establish. The analysis of the metaphorical mappings has revealed that the concepts WAR and COMMERCE are indispensable in the structuring of the concept INTERNATIONAL POLITICS. The identified conceptual mappings form a coherent net of metaphors as well as of metonymies. The domains are inextricably linked and related to each other by means of metaphorical and metonymical projections. These two cognitive mechanisms work together in structuring the target concept INTERNATIONAL POLITICS. We found out that the three domains share a common conceptualization, and it is possible to categorize them as INTERACTION WITH PURPOSES. The relationship that exists between the domains makes possible a better understanding of the concept INTERNATIONAL POLITICS. The metaphorical conceptualization of INTERNATIONAL POLITICS is not only compatible with the theoretical understanding of politics but also with the dynamics of foreign relations, in which economic and military power go hand in hand.

Metáforas orientacionais e ontológicas na ampliação semântica de quatro raízes hebraicas / Orientational and ontological metaphors in the semantic expansion of hebrew roots

Em Metaphors we live by, Lakoff e Johnson apresentam uma nova perspectiva de metáfora. Esta não é apenas um recurso lingüístico, mas estrutura conceitual determinada culturalmente. Nosso pensamento está estruturado com base em metáforas conceituais que nos possibilitam compreender um tipo de coisa em termos de outra; noções abstratas por meio da nossa experiência física. Com base nesta perspectiva de metáfora, analisamos quatro raízes hebraicas, ??? (rdl), ??? (tsv\"), ??? (yrd) e ??? (\"lh), dando ênfase às suas formas verbais, cujos sentidos passam de uma experiência concreta para outras mais abstratas. Nosso objetivo é demonstrar em que medida metáforas orientacionais e ontológicas contribuem para a ampliação lexical por ampliação semântica de uma palavra em hebraico. Para tanto, fizemos uma análise dos sentidos das raízes selecionadas, acompanhando parte de sua evolução semântica. Partimos de exemplos do texto bíblico, principal referência da língua hebraica, e contrastamos com exemplos de textos jornalísticos modernos disponíveis no site do jornal israelense Ha\'arets. / In Metaphors we live by, Lakoff and Johnson present a new perspective on metaphors. Metaphor is not merely viewed as a linguistic resource, but as a conceptual cultural structure culturally determined. Thinking is structured through conceptual metaphors which enable the comprehension of a certain thing in terms another; abstract notions through physical experience. Based on this view of metaphor, we analyzed four hebrew roots: ??? (rdl), ??? (tsv\"), ??? (yrd) and ??? (\"lh), emphasizing their verbal forms, whose meanings change from concrete experience to abstract ones. Our aim is show to which extent orientational and ontological metaphors contribute to lexical expansion through semantic expansion of a word, in hebrew. With this objective, we analyzed the meanings of roots selected, observing part of their semantic evolution. We started from examples from biblical text, the main reference of the Hebrew language, and contrasted them with modern journalistic texts available on the website of Israeli newspaper Ha\'arets

Referenciação, metáfora e argumentação no discurso presidencial / Referentiation, metaphor and argumentation in presidential speech

Nesta pesquisa, nosso propósito consistiu em examinar o papel retórico e referenciador da metáfora e em observar como se constituem e se articulam os processos referenciais promovidos pela associação de domínios díspares nas várias etapas dos discursos presidenciais, dirigidos a líderes políticos mundiais especificamente. Para alcançar esse propósito, propusemo-nos aos seguintes passos de investigação, a partir do tratamento qualitativo dos dados: examinamos as metáforas centrais selecionadas e detectamos o momento em que elas apareceram nos pronunciamentos; observamos as redes referenciais relacionadas a essas metáforas; analisamos a função argumentativa da articulação dessas redes metafóricas, na organização discursiva, levando em conta as condições específicas de produção de cada discurso. Nosso corpus constitui-se de dez discursos do ex-presidente da República Federativa do Brasil Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, proferidos: em Davos (2003 e 2005), na Assembleia Geral das Organizações das Nações Unidas, em Nova Iorque (2004), na China (2004), em Portugal (2003 e 2005), na Índia (2004), no Quênia (2010) e na 39º Reunião de Cúpula do Mersocul, na Argentina (2010). As análises permitiram detectar a existência de metáforas centrais inter-relacionadas e articuladas à argumentação dos discursos. Depreendemos ter havido muitas ocorrências de redes referenciais específicas dessas metáforas, que foram, principalmente, estruturadas pela lógica dos contêineres. Tais resultados levaram-nos a entender que a metáfora conceptual é tanto recurso de referenciação, que pode ser selecionado estrategicamente para fins argumentativos, quanto elemento estruturado e estruturante dos processos referenciais. Nosso trabalho adotou como referencial teórico: i) estudos sobre a referenciação, a partir de Mondada e Dubois (2003), Apothéloz (2003), Marcuschi e Koch (1998), ii) reflexões em torno da argumentação, em que se destacam os trabalhos de Perelman e Olbrechts-Tyteca (2002 [1958]) e Aquino (1997); iii) investigações sobre a metáfora conceptual, realizadas por Lakoff e Johnson (1980, 2003), Kovecses, (2005), e a respeito do discurso político, a partir de Charteris-Black (2011), Chilton (2004). / The aim of this research was to examine the rhetorical and referential role of metaphors, and to analyze the constitution of the referential processes promoted by the association of different domains in the various stages of presidential speeches given to world political leaders. In order to achieve such a goal, the following research steps were carried out, subsequent to the qualitative analysis of the data: selected central metaphors were examined and the moment when they occurred in the speeches were detected; the referential networks related to those metaphors were observed; the argumentative role of the articulation of those metaphorical networks in the discursive organization were observed, taking into account the production conditions that are specific to each speech. The corpus is formed by ten speeches by the former president of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, which were given in Davos (2003 and 2005), at the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization, in New York (2004), in China (2004), in Portugal (2003 and 2005), in India (2004), in Kenya (2010) and at the 39th Mercosul Summit, in Argentina (2010). The analyses have allowed the detection of central metaphors inter-related and articulated to the argumentation of the speeches. Specific referential networks of those metaphors have been noticed to be pervasive and structured according to the container logic. These results suggest that conceptual metaphors are both a referential resource, which might be used for argumentative purposes, and an element that structures and is structured by the referential processes. This work has as its theoretical reference: i) the studies on referentiation by Mondada and Dubois (2003), Apothéloz (2003), Marcuschi and Koch (1998); ii) reflections on argumentation by Perelmand and Olbrechts-Tyteca (2002 [1958]), and Aquino (1997); iii) research on conceptual metaphors carried out by Lakoff and Johnson (1980, 2003), Kovecses, (2005), and on political discourse, by Charteris-Black (2011), Chilton (2004).

This paper analyses the similarities and differences of the cognitive structures of the English-Swedish idiom pair to step into someone’s shoes and att axla någons mantel (to shoulder someone’s mantle [lit.]) in order to investigate possible conceptual or embodied motivations for their meanings. Using dictionaries and corpora to support all findings, the conceptual nature and intended meaning of each idiom were closely analysed and compared. The investigation shows metaphorical, metonymical and embodied structures which might possibly explain why these two idioms mean the same thing as a whole even though they are lexically different from each other. The results indicate that conceptual and embodied mechanisms have motivated the meanings of the idioms, thus suggesting that idiom comprehension in general as well as second language learning would greatly benefit from a more cognitive approach.

Functions and Strategies : The translation of narrative metaphors in a popular scientific text

The aim of this paper is to describe how functions of metaphors relate to translation strategiesin a translation of a popular scientific article from English to Swedish. The investigation isbased on a close reading of the source and target texts which identifies metaphors of fourdifferent functions: pedagogical, theory-constitutive, decorative and narrative. The methodfor metaphor identification is adapted from Merakchi and Rogers (2013) while the translationstrategies discussed have been borrowed from Toury (2012). These strategies reflect realtranslator behaviour and take into account source and target texts equally. The investigation starts with a quantitative summary of translation strategies which showsthat in the vast majority of cases metaphors exist simultaneously in the source and targettexts, whether it is as ―the same‖ or a ―different‖ metaphor. The qualitative analysis bringsforward that metaphors in general have a narrative function, sometimes in addition to adifferent function. It goes on to show that narrative themes are important to create links i)within the text, ii) to the scientific community and iii) within a wider cultural context, andthat this works for both source and target text independently.

Embodiment in Proverbs: Representation of the eye(s) in English, Swedish, and Japanese

This study will examine the representation and embodiment of the body part eye(s), in proverbs. The research is cross-linguistic as the proverbs analysed are in the languages English, Swedish, and Japanese. Information about the origins of proverbs, their expansion across the globe, their use in order to embellish everyday communication in all different types of languages, even those belonging to cultures not similar to the Western norm, will be discussed with references to sources based in the area of Paremiology. The study will also investigate cultural markers found in the proverbs and how the metaphoric interpretations of eye(s) are displayed through our bodily experiences. In order to analyse the representation of eye(s) in the proverbs, through metaphoric concepts, this study will employ Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory. Categories which will accompany the conceptual metaphors are based on one of the Oxford English Dictionary’s definitions of ‘eye’. Thereafter, an analysis is conducted regarding eyes(s) in the example proverbs. The results of the analysis showed that there are quite a few similarities in all three languages. However, the western languages differ from the Japanese language in regards to how the proverbs are worded. Further, cultural markers could only be found in one example in the Japanese proverbs.

Knowing is Seaing: Conceptual Metaphor in the Fiction of Kate Chopin

This paper examines the metaphoric structures that underlie Chopin's major novel, The Awakening, as well as those underlying selected short stories. Drawing on the modern theory of metaphor described by Mark Turner, George Lakoff, and Mark Johnson, the author argues that conceptual metaphors are the structural elements that underlie our experiences, thoughts, and words, and that their presence is revealed through our everyday language. Since these conceptual structures are representative of human thought and language, they are also present in literary texts, and specifically in Chopin's texts. Conceptual metaphors and the linguistic forms that result from them are so basic a part of our thinking that we automatically construct our utterances by means of them. Accordingly, conceptual metaphor mirrors human thought processes, as demonstrated by the way we describe our experiences.

Translating metaphors : an English to Swedish translation analysis based on conceptual metaphor theory

This paper analyzes the author’s own translation of a metaphor dense non-fiction text and investigates how metaphors have been translated from English to Swedish. The analysis mainly draws on Schäffner’s 2004 study that views metaphors on two levels, micro and macro, and Newmark’s 1981 prescriptive framework. The translation of metaphors is a widely discussed topic among translation scholars and it has been suggested by neurological studies that translated texts with lower metaphor density than their source texts have less emotional impact. However, the issue of translation is complicated by the translatability of metaphors as conceptual metaphor theory suggests that our understanding of metaphors is primarily based on cultural experience. The findings indicate that the metaphors in the source text can be directly translated into Swedish to a high degree, and micro-level changes do not always affect the macro-level metaphor. Based on this, it appears that macro-level metaphors at times can remain intact in the target text even if changes on the micro-level are necessary in order to conform to target language conventions. However, due to the study’s limited sample, no firm conclusions are made.
