Reliability of the Denison Organisational Culture Survey (DOCS) for use in a financial institution in South Africa

A survey of literature has revealed that there is a need for a reliability study of the Denison Organisational Culture Survey (DOCS) for use in a financial institution in South Africa. The major objective of this research was therefore to determine the internal consistency reliability of the DOCS - in other words, to determine the accuracy or consistency with which the set of survey items measures one particular scale. The total sample of 2 735 individuals used in this research consisted of both male and female full-time employees of a financial institution in South Africa. The results of this introductory study on the reliability of the DOCS in South Africa demonstrated clear support for similar research conducted abroad and proved to be compatible with the cognitive-behaviouristic psychology movement's original concept of organisational culture. The reliability of the DOCS, as applicable to this South African sample, reflects statistical significant internal consistency. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Comm.

Terence Hutchison's 1938 contribution to economic methodology

Terence Hutchison's 193 8 essay has been variously interpreted as introducing positivism, ultra-empiricism, and Popperian falsificationism into economics. Given Popper's well known anti-positivist stance, this state of affairs may seem puzzling. It might be presumed either that contradictions of some kind are involved in Hutchison's position, or that Popper's stance is not so far removed from logical positivism after all. In this thesis the latter option is adopted and Popper and logical positivism is viewed as part of a wider 'logical reconstructionist' pre-Quinean philosophy of science. Yet this move may not, and should not, resolve all disquietude on the part of the reader. For, to the extent that Hutchison adopted those aspects of Popper which clashed with logical positivism, there is an inherent contradiction between the view that Hutchison introduced positivism and the view that he introduced Popper into economics. This provides us with the springboard we need for our thesis. For the contradiction is resolved once these views are recognised as turning Hutchison into a straw man. In the weak version of our thesis we argue that there has been· an overemphasis on the positivist and Popperian elements in Hutchison's essay and a neglect of the extent to which it is concerned with economic methodology. In the strong version of our thesis we argue that Hutchison's essay is best viewed as a modem restatement of the inductivist-empirical-historical, as opposed to the deductivist-apriorist-formalist, approach in the long-standing methodenstreit in economics. In this restatement Hutchison draws on various elements of positivism and Popper to support a position that arises out of, and is specific to, the concerns of economic methodology, rather than to promote any particular philosophy of science in economics. Survey chapters on the philosophy of science with special emphasis on logical positivism, and on aspects of the history of economic methodology, enable us to evaluate the nature of Hutchison's essay and to substantiate our thesis. Towards the development of an appropriate organisational development approach for optimising the capacity building of community-based organisations (CBOs) : a case study of 3 CBOs in the Western Cape

Thesis (PhD (School of Public Management and Planning))—-Stellenbosch University, 2008. / The aim of the study is to develop an appropriate Organisational Development (OD) approach to optimise the capacity of Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) and promote Community and Civil Society Development. The following research question is examined: In what ways can OD be a suitable approach to build the capacity of CBOs and thus have an impact on Community and Civil Society Development? The study is motivated by current development challenges in South Africa1 and the role civil society can play to represent citizens’ interests in relation to state and market2. As part of civil society, CBOs are generally recognised as pivotal stakeholders in the South African development context3, but are in reality marginalised and unable to assert themselves in the development sector. Furthermore Development Theory shows that theorists have in the recent past increasingly advocated for ‘democratisation of development’, enabling previously marginalised people to participate in development processes and therefore gain power over these. Although not widely practised reality yet, ‘People centred’ and ‘Participatory development’ as bottom-up and endogenous versions of development are being promoted as sustainable development paradigms. They emphasise the importance of building capacity of civil-society organisations4. OD as an approach to development and capacity building collaborates with the goals of a people centred development and the strengthening of civil society organisations, and is “in line with several participative approaches to development”5. It is, however, relevant to cultivate a “new development practitioner”, who is competent to facilitate capacity-building processes, which will meaningfully impact at the grassroots level6. The study is guided by a postmodern philosophy and stems from a phenomenological as well as transformative approach by applying a Goethean phenomenology, Action Research, Grounded Theory, Complexity Theory and various qualitative research methodologies, such as case study work with three CBOs; and semi-structured interviews with CBOs, community leaders, OD practitioners and academics. Furthermore the research includes a sociological examination of the current development context and paradigms, and their impact in post Apartheid South Africa. During the research, findings were engaged with by a discussion forum. The research findings included the discussion of themes, which emerged through the Grounded Theory approach: ∗ CBO capacity, by examining how capacity is interpreted at a CBO level in relation to inherent capacities; ∗ Leadership, and the role of pioneer leaders in CBOs; and ∗ Relationships, within CBOs as well as with their broader environment. These themes were understood as relevant when aiming to develop CBO capacity as well as engaging with the broader capacity development sector. Further, principles and approaches for OD at a CBO level are proposed, which are ultimately related through their view of organisations as complex social systems, their emphasis on learning, and the critical examination of power asymmetries. It is intended that this study contributes to development practice concerning CBO development within and beyond South Africa. Ultimately the study aims to influence current development paradigms and contribute to an enabling development context and the building of a strong and proactive civil society.

Comment le motif de la marque insensible du diable a-t-il pu se frayer un chemin au sein du discours théologique, juridique et médical de la fin de la Renaissance jusqu'à s'imposer comme une pièce essentielle du crime de sorcellerie? Selon quels mécanismes et à partir de quels systèmes de croyance cette marque corporelle en est-elle venue à connaître une si large diffusion et une aussi grande acceptation tant chez les gens du livres que parmi les couches populaires? En cette époque marquée par la grande chasse aux sorcières et le développement de l'investigation scientifique, l'intérêt que les savants portent à cette étrange sémiologie constitue une porte d'accès privilégiée pour aborder de front la dynamique du déplacement des frontières que la démonologie met en oeuvre au sein des différents champs du savoir. Cette thèse a pour objectif d'étudier le réseau des mutations épistémologiques qui conditionne l'émergence de la marque du diable dans le savoir démonologique français à la charnière des XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Nous examinerons par quels cheminements l'altérité diabolique s'est peu à peu intériorisée dans le corps et l'âme des individus sous l'influence grandissante des vertus de l'empirisme, de la méthode expérimentale et de l'observation. En analysant la construction rhétorique de la théorie des marques du diable et en la reliant aux changements qui s'opèrent sur la plateforme intellectuelle de l'Ancien Régime, nous entendons éclairer la nouvelle distribution qui s'effectue entre les faits naturels et surnaturels ainsi que les modalités d'écriture pour en rendre compte. / How did the motive of the Devil's Mark wend its way through the theological, legal and medical discourse at the end of the Renaissance to such a point that it became a critical component of the crime of witchcraft? Through what mechanisms and what belief systems did this idea of the Devil's Mark become so widely disseminated and greatly accepted among both the scholars and the general public? In a period marked by the Great Witch Hunt, as well as the development of scientific investigation, the fact that the scholars are interested in this strange semiotics is a very interesting starting point to address head-on the shift in boundaries that demonology brought about within these different fields of knowledge. The purpose of this thesis is to study the network of the epistemological mutations that shaped how the Devil's Mark emerged in French demonological knowledge between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. We will review how diabolical otherness gradually became internalized in the individuals' heart and soul under the increasingly powerful influence of empiricism, experimental method, and observation. We will analyze the rhetorical construction surrounding the Devil's Mark theory and relate it to the changes that took place in the intellectual platform of the Ancien Régime in order to shed light on the new classification that appeared between natural and supernatural facts, as well as on the rhetorical strategies used to report on them.

[pt] A presente dissertação procura compreender algumas reflexões sobre a história contidas nos Ensaios Morais, Políticos e Literários do filósofo escocês David Hume (1711-1776). Neste trabalho (1758), cuja característica dominante é a heterogeneidade dos temas abordados, o autor busca o conhecimento dos assuntos humanos sob uma perspectiva secularizada, mostrando que entre uma idealização da sociedade (e de uma conduta moral dos homens que nela vivem) e sua realidade concreta a escolha para o verdadeiro esclarecimento deve recair sobre esta última, desmistificando quaisquer hipóteses metafísicas e religiosas como guias ao saber. Tomando a Inglaterra como exemplo preferencial não apenas dos avanços conquistados pelo mundo moderno europeu, mas também dos principais problemas deste, Hume estabelece algumas reflexões - tal como a moderação nas disputas políticas e a interdependência econômica entre os países - que têm por objetivo a fundamentação de uma ciência política. Para esta concorre também uma crítica empírica, que levará o escocês a priorizar os aspectos gerais das sociedades (como a economia, as instituições, os avanços técnicos) como modo de explicação da dinâmica histórica, que, segundo sua percepção, opera por transformações lentas e graduais, de forma seqüenciada, nunca ou raramente de maneira abrupta e imediata. In this particular work (1758), whose dominating characteristic is the heterogeneity of the proposed themes, the author is looking for the knowledge of human affairs under a secular perspective, exposing that between an idealization of society (including the moral conduct of men who live under her) and its concrete reality, the choice towards the very true knowledge must stand with the last, demystifying any metaphysical and religious hypothesis as guides to the capacity of learning. Taking England as a preferential example of the advances and problems of modern Europe, Hume sets some reflections - just as moderation in politics affairs and the economic interdependence among States - which observe the goal of founding a science of politics. In its basis remains an empirical criticism, which leads the Scot to conceive a priority to the general aspects of societies (as economy, institutions, technical advances) as a model of explanation on the historical dynamics, which, according to his conception, is transformed slowly and gradually, in a sequential way, never or rarely trough fast and immediate changes. One looked for, besides these aspects, to analyze the methodological importance of the author´s general rule to the historical concern, for, by using her, Hume wonders about the past and either proposes general directions for his time and future, marking, this way, how societies historically must have developed and how they, probably, would develop themselves from now on, aiming the first step to a scientific knowledge of society as a whole, that would be able to remain even through the circumstantial changes that naturally take place in societies.

Percursos de um diálogo entre Cconstrutivismo semiótico-cultural e Esquizoanálise: Empirismo radical, multiplicação dialógica e plano de imanência / Paths of a dialogue between semiotic-cultural constructivism and Schizoanalysis: radical empiricism, dialogic multiplication and immanence plane

O presente trabalho é fruto de um percurso teórico que teve como objetivo buscar aproximações e realizar um diálogo entre Construtivismo Semiótico-Cultural e Esquizoanálise. Fazendo uso da noção de multiplicação dialógica, Guimarães (2010), verifiquei a possibilidade de acessar o campo intensivo/relacional denominado empirismo radical pelo campo do construtivista semiótico-cultural em Psicologia, e plano de imanência pelo campo esquizoanalítico. Ao fazê-lo, busquei viabilizar um diálogo a partir de uma tênue superfície de contato entre os diferentes campos de conhecimento. As noções de sistema semiaberto e rizoma e seu funcionamento em rede foram os propulsores desta pesquisa. Parti do dialogismo teórico-metodológico desenvolvido Marková (2003) colocando Construtivismo Semiótico-Cultural, Esquizoanálise e pesquisador nas posições de Ego-Alter-Objeto, respectivamente. Tal proposta direcionava-se para um árduo trabalho de construção de uma ponte entre os distintos posicionamentos de cada campo de conhecimento. Por outro lado fiz uma opção metodológica que permitisse buscar regiões de tensão entre as áreas sem a intensão de construir uma ponte entre elas. Tomando a metáfora trazida por Bruno Latour (2008), segundo a qual processos de construção de conhecimento podem se assemelhar ao trânsito sobre um rio, elaborei uma explanação sobre os campos de conhecimento. Uma das margens do rio correspondeu ao Construtivismo Semiótico-Cultural em Psicologia, e a outra margem à Esquizoanálise. Na primeira das margens, busquei apresentar dimensões da especificidade humana do Construtivismo Semiótico-Cultural nos campos dos construtivismos em psicologia explorando as noções de sistema semiaberto, self, subjetividade, cultura e construção social da realidade. Na segunda margem, me dirigi para as noções da filosofia da diferença, rizoma e subjetividade como multiplicidade. Adicionalmente explorei filósofos historicamente abordados por cada uma das margens, Leibniz, Hume, Bergson, para em seguida encontrar uma superfície de contato, que identifiquei como empirismo radical, construtivismo, e como plano de imanência, Esquizoanálise. A superfície de contato identificada possui como característica ser um campo relacional pré-pessoal que cria realidade por meio do entrelaçamento dos mais diversos elementos e de onde emergem as várias possibilidades de subjetividade e de mundo. A característica de entrelaçamento, como um tear que produz um tecido é encontrada tanto no pensamento de James, uma das bases do Construtivismo Semiótico-Cultural, como nas proposições de Deleuze e Guattari fundadores da Esquizoanálise. Encontrar essa superfície possibilitou a conclusão deste trabalho, embora considere que maiores aprofundamentos possam ser feitos no futuro, articulando outros aspectos histórico-filosóficos pertencentes a ambas as áreas de conhecimento e suas implicações para o avanço da noção de multiplicação dialógica, dentre outras noções fundamentais no campo da psicologia cultural / This work is the result of a theoretical course which aimed to seek approaches and achieve a dialogue between Semiotic-Cultural Constuctivism and Schizoanalysis. Making use of the notion of dialogic multiplication, Guimarães (2010) checked the possibility to access intensive / relational field called radical empiricism by the field of cultural-semiotic constructivism in psychology and immanence plane by equizoanalitic field. In doing so, I sought facilitate a dialogue from a tenuous contact surface between the different fields of knowledge. The notions of open ended system and rhizome and yours networking were the thrusters of this research. Go away from theorical-methodological dialogismo developed by Marková (2003) putting Semiotic-Cultural Constructivism, Schizoanalysis and researcher in positions Ego-Alter-Object respectively. Such a proposal directed to hard work of building a bridge between the different positions of each field of knowledge. On the other hand made a methodological option that allows searching regions of tension between the areas without the intention to build a bridge between them. Taking the metaphor brought by Bruno Latour (2008), whereby processes of knowledge building may resemble traffic over a river, elaborated an explanation of the fields of knowledge. A river banks corresponded to Semiotic-Cultural Constructivism in Psychology, and the other side to Schizoanalysis. At first the banks, sought to present dimensions of human specificity of Constructivist Semiotic-Cultural Constructivism in constructivism fields of psychology exploring the notions of openended system, self, subjectivity, culture and social construction of reality. In the second bank, I headed to the notions of philosophy of difference, rhizome and subjectivity as multiplicity Additionally philosophers explored historically addressed by each of the banks, Leibniz, Hume, Bergson, to then find a contact surface, which identified as radical empiricism, constructivism, and as the plane of immanence, Schizoanalysis. The surface contact has identified as being characteristic of a pre-personal relational field that creates reality through the interweaving of diverse elements which emerge and the various possibilities of subjectivity and world. The feature of entanglement, as a loom which produces a tissue is found both in the thought of James, one of the bases of Semiotic-Cultural Constructivism, as the propositions of Deleuze and Guattari founders of Schizoanalysis. Find the surface enabled the completion of this work, but believes that further insights can be made in the future, articulating other historical and philosophical aspects pertaining to both areas of knowledge and its implications for the development of the notion of dialogic multiplication, among other fundamental notions in field of psychology culture
