Through in-depth interviews with regular soccer spectators and, in a complementary way, ethnographic observations regarding the follow-up of home and stadium games (TV), the study seeks to map and understand this emerging etiquette. This study aims to examine how Swedish fans of the TV-series Skam use the Facebook group Kosegruppa Sverige in order to construct and maintain a fandom, and how fan practices can contribute in creating identity among the members of the group. Theories related to fan research, discourse psychology and intersectionality were applied, as well as a brief overview of earlier research results related to these areas. By using a netnographic approach combined with a discourse analyses, posts made by fans on Kosegruppa Sverige during December 2016 were examined and analyzed. Three main fan practices were found to be used in constructing fandom in the group; fans made their own material such as edits, videos and attire that had a connection to the narrative, they acted out on their fandom both by adapting their language and looks, and finally by buying and selling merchandise and thus collecting things related to the series. Identity was created through intersectional perspectives of gender, sexuality and age. Finally, the study concluded that fandom could be seen as an integral tool within media production, which blurs the line between producers and consumers.

Comparative Analysis of Serrated Trailing Edge Designs on Idealized Aircraft Engine Fan Blades for Noise Reduction

The effects of serrated trailing edge designs, designed for noise reduction, on the flow-field downstream of an idealized aircraft engine fan blade row were investigated in detail. The measurements were performed in the Virginia Tech low speed linear cascade tunnel on one set of baseline GE-Rotor-B blades and four sets of GE-Rotor-B blades with serrated trailing edges. The four serrated blade sets consisted of two different serration sizes (1.27 cm and 2.54 cm) and for each different serration size a second set of blades with added trailing edge camber. The cascade row consisted of 8 GE-Rotor-B blades and 7-passages with adjustable tip gap settings. It had an inlet angle of 65.1º, stagger angle of 56.9º and a turning angle of 11.8º. The tunnel was operated with a tip gap setting of 1.65% chord, with a Reynolds number based on the chord of 390,000. Blade loading measurements performed on each set of blades showed that it was slightly dependent on the serration shape. As the serration size was increased the blade loading decreased, but adding droop increased the blade loading. The Pitot-static cross-sections showed that flow-fields near the upper and lower endwalls cascade tunnel were similar with the baseline or the serrated blade downstream of the blade row. In the wake region, the individual trailing edge serrations tips and valleys could be seen. As the wake convected downstream, the individual tips and valleys became less visible and the wake was more uniform in profile. The tip leakage vortex was only minimally affected by the trailing edge serrations. This conclusion was further reinforced by the three-component hot-wire cross-sectional measurements that were performed from the lower endwall to the mid-span of the blade. These showed that the mean streamwise velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence kinetic energy production in the tip leakage region were nearly the same for all four serrated blades as well as the baseline. The vorticity in this region was a more dependent on the serration shape and as a result increased with serration size compared to the baseline. Mid-span measurements performed with the three-component hot-wire showed the spreading rate of the wake and the decay rate of the wake centerline velocity deficit increased with serration size compared to the baseline case. Drooping of the trailing edge only minimally improved the spreading and decay rates. This improvement in these rates was predicted to reduce the tonal noise at the leading edge of the downstream stator vane because the periodic fluctuation associated with the sweeping of the rotor blade wakes across it, was due to the pitchwise variation in the mean streamwise velocity. The wakes were further compared to the mean velocity and turbulence profiles of plane wakes, which the baseline and the smallest serration size agreed the best. As the serration size was increased and drooping was added, the wakes became less like plane wakes. Spectral plots at the wake centerline in all three velocity directions showed some evidence of coherent motion in the wake as a result of vortex shedding. / Master of Science

Image Reconstruction Based On Hilbert And Hybrid Filtered Algorithms With Inverse Distance Weight And No Backprojection Weight

Filtered backprojection (FBP) reconstruction algorithms are very popular in the field of X-ray computed tomography (CT) because they give advantages in terms of the numerical accuracy and computational complexity. Ramp filter based fan-beam FBP reconstruction algorithms have the position dependent weight in the backprojection which is responsible for spatially non-uniform distribution of noise and resolution, and artifacts. Many algorithms based on shift variant filtering or spatially-invariant interpolation in the backprojection step have been developed to deal with this issue. However, these algorithms are computationally demanding. Recently, fan-beam algorithms based on Hilbert filtering with inverse distance weight and no weight in the backprojection have been derived using the Hamaker’s relation. These fan-beam reconstruction algorithms have been shown to improve noise uniformity and uniformity in resolution. In this thesis, fan-beam FBP reconstruction algorithms with inverse distance back-projection weight and no backprojection weight for 2D image reconstruction are presented and discussed for the two fan-beam scan geometries -equi-angular and equispace detector array. Based on the proposed and discussed fan-beam reconstruction algorithms with inverse distance backprojection and no backprojection weight, new 3D cone-beam FDK reconstruction algorithms with circular and helical scan trajectories for curved and planar detector geometries are proposed. To start with three rebinning formulae from literature are presented and it is shown that one can derive all fan-beam FBP reconstruction algorithms from these rebinning formulae. Specifically, two fan-beam algorithms with no backprojection weight based on Hilbert filtering for equi-space linear array detector and one new fan-beam algorithm with inverse distance backprojection weight based on hybrid filtering for both equi-angular and equi-space linear array detector are derived. Simulation results for these algorithms in terms of uniformity of noise and resolution in comparison to standard fan-beam FBP reconstruction algorithm (ramp filter based fan-beam reconstruction algorithm) are presented. It is shown through simulation that the fan-beam reconstruction algorithm with inverse distance in the backprojection gives better noise performance while retaining the resolution properities. A comparison between above mentioned reconstruction algorithms is given in terms of computational complexity. The state of the art 3D X-ray imaging systems in medicine with cone-beam (CB) circular and helical computed tomography scanners use non-exact (approximate) FBP based reconstruction algorithm. They are attractive because of their simplicity and low computational cost. However, they produce sub-optimal reconstructed images with respect to cone-beam artifacts, noise and axial intensity drop in case of circular trajectory scan imaging. Axial intensity drop in the reconstructed image is due to the insufficient data acquired by the circular-scan trajectory CB CT. This thesis deals with investigations to improve the image quality by means of the Hilbert and hybrid filtering based algorithms using redundancy data for Feldkamp, Davis and Kress (FDK) type reconstruction algorithms. In this thesis, new FDK type reconstruction algorithms for cylindrical detector and planar detector for CB circular CT are developed, which are obtained by extending to three dimensions (3D) an exact Hilbert filtering based FBP algorithm for 2D fan-beam beam algorithms with no position dependent backprojection weight and fan-beam algorithm with inverse distance backprojection weight. The proposed FDK reconstruction algorithm with inverse distance weight in the backprojection requires full-scan projection data while the FDK reconstruction algorithm with no backprojection weight can handle partial-scan data including very short-scan. The FDK reconstruction algorithms with no backprojection weight for circular CB CT are compared with Hu’s, FDK and T-FDK reconstruction algorithms in-terms of axial intensity drop and computational complexity. The simulation results of noise, CB artifacts performance and execution timing as well as the partial-scan reconstruction abilities are presented. We show that FDK reconstruction algorithms with no backprojection weight have better noise performance characteristics than the conventional FDK reconstruction algorithm where the backprojection weight is known to result in spatial non-uniformity in the noise characteristics. In this thesis, we present an efficient method to reduce the axial intensity drop in circular CB CT. The efficient method consists of two steps: the first one is reconstruction of the object using FDK reconstruction algorithm with no backprojection weight and the second is estimating the missing term. The efficient method is comparable to Zhu et al.’s method in terms of reduction in axial intensity drop, noise and computational complexity. The helical scanning trajectory satisfies the Tuy-smith condition, hence an exact and stable reconstruction is possible. However, the helical FDK reconstruction algorithm is responsible for the cone-beam artifacts since the helical FDK reconstruction algorithm is approximate in its derivation. In this thesis, helical FDK reconstruction algorithms based on Hilbert filtering with no backprojection weight and FDK reconstruction algorithm based on hybrid filtering with inverse distance backprojection weight are presented to reduce the CB artifacts. These algorithms are compared with standard helical FDK in-terms of noise, CB artifacts and computational complexity.

Numerical modeling and experimental investigation of the flow and thermal processes in a motor car vehicle underhood

Thesis (MScEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / The project aimed at numerically modeling the flow and thermal processes occurring in a Volkswagen Citi Golf Chico underhood using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The motivation for this investigation was to develop and demonstrate the capability of CFD as an automotive analysis tool. This would allow local automobile analysts and designers enhanced analyses of the thermal and flow conditions occurring in this com-pact environment, leading to improved local vehicles. A review of relevant literature indicated that the CFD community in South Africa is small with comparison to the international sector. The application of CFD to analyse automo-biles in South Africa is limited and practised by few. This experience requires develop-ment and refinement, such that South Africa may improve vehicles manufacture in the country. The review also indicated that CFD used in the international communities pro-vides good results, promoting simulation-based engineering. The experimental investigation involved parking a vehicle in the subsonic wind tunnel intake at the Mechanical Engineering Department in Stellenbosch. This tunnel is 3.7 m wide, 4 m long and 2.8 m tall, capable of wind speeds up to 90 m/s. Various equipment including thermocouples, a thermal imager and a hand held hot-wire anemometer pro-vided temperature and velocity measurements within the underhood. A pitot-static probe connected to a pressure transducer measured the wind tunnel velocities. The numerical investigation started with the creation of a three-dimensional geometry of the underhood from measurements taken of the vehicle. This geometry, created with Solid Edge version 14, formed the domain for automatically generating discretised grids using STAR-Design version 3.2. Subsequently, boundary conditions and numerical models were applied to the grids, which included simplified fan and radiator models. The analysis concluded with results obtained from the numerical CFD simulations, per-formed with STAR-CD version 3.24. The validity and accuracy of the numerical solutions was verified and quantified with the numerical results. The evaluation consisted of two test cases (wind tunnel speeds of 0 m/s and 5 m/s), each simulated at three different grid resolutions. Each simulation con-tinued until they fully converged to a single solution. The comparison of the three simu-lations from each case indicated that the results were grid independent. The final in-spection of the results in terms of y+ values and boundary conditions indicated that the models implemented were valid. The comparison of the numerical results for temperatures and fan inlet velocities with the experimentally measured data served as a measure to quantify the applicability of CFD for underhood investigations. The comparison between the two sets of results proved acceptable, with a maximum difference of 10%, indicating that CFD is capable of predicting temperatures and flow fields with reasonable accuracy. The numerical results indicated that while the vehicle travels at higher velocities, the underhood remains well ventilated. The underhood tends to trap the hot air from the radiator and other heat sources when the vehicle remains stationary, causing the air to heat further. This can be addressed by the installation of vents in the side panels near the top of the underhood environment. This should allow the hot air to escape, possibly resulting in a significant reduction of the underhood temperatures. Momentum and energy source terms modelled the effects from the fan and radiator. These models worked well for both cases, but improvement is necessary. Special at-tention should be given to the condition where the radiator fan obstructs the flow through the radiator. A further result of the project was the establishment of a flexible foundation for conduct-ing numerical simulations on automobiles. It allows for the inclusion of additional com-ponents and the implementation of more advanced models for representing effects from various engine components.

Heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system energy demand coupling with building loads for office buildings

The UK building stock accounts for about half of all energy consumed in the UK. A large portion of the energy is consumed by nondomestic buildings. Offices and retail are the most energy intensive typologies within the nondomestic building sector, typically accounting for over 50% of the nondomestic buildings’ total energy consumption. Heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are the largest energy end use in the nondomestic sector, with energy consumption close to 50% of total energy consumption. Different HVAC systems have different energy requirements when responding to the same building heating and cooling demands. On the other hand, building heating and cooling demands depend on various parameters such as building fabrics, glazing ratio, building form, occupancy pattern, and many others. HVAC system energy requirements and building energy demands can be determined by mathematical modelling. A widely accepted approach among building professionals is to use building energy simulation tools such as EnergyPlus, IES, DOE2, etc. which can analyse in detail building energy consumption. However, preparing and running simulations in such tools is usually very complicated, time consuming and costly. Their complexity has been identified as the biggest obstacle. Adequate alternatives to complex building energy simulation tools are regression models which can provide results in an easier and faster way. This research deals with the development of regression models that enable the selection of HVAC systems for office buildings. In addition, the models are able to predict annual heating, cooling and auxiliary energy requirements of different HVAC systems as a function of office building heating and cooling demands. For the first part of the data set development used for the regression analysis, a data set of office building simulation archetypes was developed. The four most typical built forms (open plan sidelit, cellular sidelit, artificially lit open plan and composite sidelit cellular around artificially lit open plan built form) were coupled with five types of building fabric and three levels of glazing ratio. Furthermore, two measures of reducing solar heat gains were considered as well as implementation of daylight control. Also, building orientation was included in the analysis. In total 3840 different office buildings were then further coupled with five different HVAC systems: variable air volume system; constant air volume system; fan coil system with dedicated air; chilled ceiling system with embedded pipes, dedicated air and radiator heating; and chilled ceiling system with exposed aluminium panels, dedicated air and radiator heating. The total number of models simulated in EnergyPlus, in order to develop the input database for regression analysis, was 23,040. The results clearly indicate that it is possible to form a reliable judgement about each different HVAC system’s heating, cooling and auxiliary energy requirements based only on office building heating and cooling demands. High coefficients of determination of the proposed regression models show that HVAC system requirements can be predicted with high accuracy. The lowest coefficient of determination among cooling regression models was 0.94 in the case of the CAV system. HVAC system heating energy requirement regression models had a coefficient of determination above 0.96. The auxiliary energy requirement models had a coefficient of determination above 0.95, except in the case of chilled ceiling systems where the coefficient of determination was around 0.87. This research demonstrates that simplified regression models can be used to provide design decisions for the office building HVAC systems studied. Such models allow more rapid determination of HVAC systems energy requirements without the need for time-consuming (hence expensive) reconfigurations and runs of the simulation program.
