Franz Kafka e Walter Benjamin: contar do tempo interrompido / Franz Kafka and Walter Benjamin: telling the interrupted time

Izabel, Tomaz Amorim Fernandes 03 October 2018 (has links)
This research aims to read the works of Franz Kafka and Walter Benjamin from the perspective of the ways of telling time in Modernity and their specific relation to interruption. The thesis attempts to find gestures of interruption and repetition in the temporal structure of Kafkas short stories, contained in \"Contemplation\" and \"A rural doctor\", the novella \"The metamorphosis\" and the novels \"Amerika or The disappeared\", \"The trial\" and \"The castle\", as well as in Benjamins youth criticism, in \"The critique of violence\", in \"The origin of German Tragic Drama\", in some essays of the 1930s, in the \"Passages\" work and in the theses \"On the concept of History\", seeking to establish a broader historical relationship with the modern sensibility of time and the possibilities, interrupted or not, of its telling, as a broad tendency that spreads to the present. The thesis tries to point, above all, the manner in which the interruption arises in these works as, at the same time, a cure and symptom of Modernity, a goal to be achieved and an obstacle to its own fulfillment.

Os protocolos contêm / To investigate psychology treatment dropout of children helps the evaluation of the quality of therapy in children´s clinic. The work with children makes the treatment situation more complex, where the therapeutic field will constitute not only of the couple patient-analyst, but of a triad analyst-patient-parents. Sonho desfeito: anencefalia e experiência emocional dos pais / A broken dream: anencephaly and parents emotional experience

Cia, Walkiria Cordenonssi 28 April 2014 (has links)
The contemporary technological development allows the early detection of fetal malformations, such as anencephaly, which makes the babys survival unfeasible. This assumption leads to the immediate revelation of the diagnosis to the parents who will decide either to continue or interrupt the pregnancy. This paper focuses on the investigation of the emotional experience that couples have when facing a fetal anencephaly diagnosis, bringing instruments for a better psychological care. The investigation process was organized as a qualitative research, through psychoanalytic approach, based on the investigation procedures of access, register, interpretation and reflexive interlocution on clinical care sessions. From the sessions with couples, during eight years, two transferential fictional narratives, that preserve essential elements of drama at stake, were created. One of the narratives approaches a situation of choice for pregnancy interruption, while the other aims at the decision to keep it. The interpretative procedures allowed the \"creation / finding\" of the following fields of affective-emotional sense or relative unconscious: Is it a nightmare?, Who or what is there?, We have to make a decision. The big picture shows that great part of the clinical work takes place in a singular field, We have to make a decision, defined by the sense of urgency around the decision about the eventual interruption of vital processes. The field Is it a nightmare? leads to the fact that this kind of diagnosis revelation, derived from the technology which detects problems that were not being lived as physical signals or symptoms, frequently generates dissociative reactions, making the clinical care mandatory. The other field Who or what is there? has a central role, in this clinic, as soon as it contains an extreme question around the fetuss ontological statute, being a baby or a non-baby. A sensible and attentive comprehension of the different ways in which couples deal with this field is essential for a psychotherapeutic care

Electric distribution system risk assessment using actual utility reliability data

Feng, Zhe 21 April 2006
This thesis describes the research conducted on the use of historical performance data in assessing the financial risk for a power distribution utility in a performance based regulation (PBR) regime. The historical utility data used in this research are taken from the Canadian Electrical Association (CEA) annual reports. The individual utility data in these reports are confidential and only provided to the participating utilities. Thirteen utilities that participate in the CEA data reporting activity agreed to provide their individual utility data for the research described in this thesis. These utilities are anonymous and are referred to by numerical designations in accordance with the CEA protocol. This research could not have been conducted without the support of these utilities. The objectives of the research described in this thesis are to examine and analyze the variations in the annual performance indices of the thirteen participating utilities and the aggregated systems including the overall indices and the cause code contributions, and to examine the possible utilization of historic utility reliability indices to create suitable reward/penalty structures in a PBR protocol. The potential financial risk and actual financial payment analyses for these selected utilities are conducted using their historical performance data imposed on a number of possible reward/penalty structures developed in this thesis. An approach to recognize adverse utility performance in the form of Major Outage Years (MOY) is developed and the influence of the MOY performance in PBR decision making is examined.

Mechanisms supporting recognition memory during music listening

Graham, Brittany Shauna 22 November 2011 (has links)
We investigated the concurrent effects of arousal and encoding specificity as related to background music on associative memory accuracy. Extant literature suggested these factors affect memory, but their combined effect in musical stimuli was not clear and may affect memory differentially for young and older adults. Specifically, we sought to determine if music can be used as a mnemonic device to overcome the associative memory deficits typically experienced by healthy older adults. We used a paired-associates memory task in which young and older adults listened to either highly or lowly arousing music or to silence while simultaneously studying same gender face-name pairs. Participants' memory was then tested for these pairs while listening to either the same or different music selections. We found that young adults' memory performance was not affected by any of the music listening conditions. Music listening, however, was detrimental for older adults. Specifically, their memory performance was worse for all music conditions, particularly if the music was highly arousing. Young adults' pattern of results was not reflected in their subjective ratings of helpfulness; they felt that all music was helpful to their performance yet there was no indication of this in the results. Older adults were more aware of the detriment of music on their performance, rating some highly arousing music as less helpful than silence. We discuss possible reasons for this pattern and conclude that these results are most consistent with the theory that older adults' failure to inhibit processing of distracting task-irrelevant information, in this case background music, contributes to their elevated memory failures.

A Study of Interruption Behavior in Mandarin Mother-child Conversation

Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the nature and function of mother-to-child and child-to-mother interruptions in conversation. The data analyzed are natural conversations from two Mandarin-speaking mother-child dyads. The children are about three years old. Goldberg’s (1990:891) categorization of interruptions is adopted to examine the nature of the mothers’ and children’s interruptions. The results show that both the mothers and the children use more rapport-oriented interruptions than other types of interruptions, which indicates that in mother-child interaction, both parties tend to use interruptions to signal their involvement and interest and to construct a shared topic cooperatively. In addition, the children’s interruptions are further examined based on Dunn and Shatz’s (1989) framework in order to investigate the semantic relations between the children’s interruptions and the conversational discourse. The findings show that most of the children’s interruptions contain relevant new information. Such interruptions are likely to succeed in getting the attention and response from the mothers.

Horizontal series fault comparison in AC

Estes, Hunter Blake 17 February 2012 (has links)
This research focuses on empirical observations of horizontal series arc faults. These faults differ from ground faults, for series faults encompass the electromagnetic transient effects of arc formations in series with sustained current flow when there is a break in the circuit. This may happen intentionally (as in a breaker) or unintentionally (as in a loose, damaged, or severed cable). This paper studies some of those transient effects during arc ignition, propagation, and cessation. Emphasis is on dc systems, for series faults present some of the more challenging safety concerns relating to widespread dc micro-grid acceptance and proliferation. However, arc behavior is also compared to that of ac systems under “quasi-equivalent”, passive circuit parameters. Variables of study primarily include arc voltage, current, and their relationship to electrode spacing under dynamic conditions. Results indicate that interruptions in dc current, while appearing more chaotic from a localized standpoint, do not produce the fast-acting transients associated with ac disturbances. Additionally, if dc arcs propagate over a slowly increasing distance of separation, they can be modeled as quasi-static in nature. An equation model is developed and curve-fitting parameters match well with historically tabulated constants. / text
