“More Human Than Human”: Lacan’s Mirror Stage Theory and Posthumanism in Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?Finn, Richelle V 18 May 2018 (has links)
In my thesis, Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is examined using French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan's mirror stage theory. In the novel, humans have built androids that are almost indistinguishable from humans except that they lack a sense of empathy, or so the humans believe. The Voigt-Kampff Machine is a polygraph-like device used to determine if a subject shows signs of empathy in order to confirm if one is an android or a human. Yet, should empathy be the defining quality of determining humanity?
In his article "The mirror stage as formative of the function of the ‘I’ as revealed in psychoanalytic experience," Lacan refers to a particular critical milestone in an infant's psychological development. When the baby looks in a mirror, they come to the realization that the image they are seeing is not just any ordinary image; it is actually themselves in the mirror. This "a-ha" moment of self-realization is what Lacan's Mirror Stage Theory is based on. According to Lacan's theory, the image that the child sees in a mirror becomes an "Other" through which they will always scrutinize and pass judgment on, for it is not how they have pictured themselves to be in their mind’s eye.
I hypothesize that the androids are humans' artificial and technological Other. It is my thought that Dick uses the conflict of determining the biological from the artificial, the effort to differentiate humans from androids and biological animals from artificial ones, to illustrate Lacan's psychoanalysis of the mirror stage and its importance in our continual search for determining what humanity is and who we really are.

Memorial de Nair: hipóteses sobre a gênese da simbolização à luz de um suposto caso de psicose ou autismo / The story, of Nair: a study on the origins of symbolisation in light of an alleged case of psychosis or autismCalderoni, David 09 November 2001 (has links)
O campo teórico e prático assim configurado, o autor chamou de Psicologramática, vindo a propô-lo como um novo campo científico / This thesis aims to verify a hypothesis about the origins of symbolization through clinical data obtained from case of Nair. Nair was diagnosed as psychotic and autist in school and clinical settings before starting the treatment that originated the present thesis. According to this hypothesis, the subject constitutes the object before constituting itself as an I. The first part of the thesis summarises the institutional and clinical case of Hermes (Calderoni, 1994) from where the hypothesis being presently investigated was derived. A detailed review of Aristotle\'s science of the universal, Lacan\'s theory of the symbolic and Spinoza\'s theory of singular essence is followed by the presentation of a sample of clinical sessions constitutive of Nair\'s case. The theoretical and metapsychological reflection on the unique psychological condition expressed by Nair is then developed in the context of Freudian psychoanalysis. The psyche of the analyst, as it was revealed in the interaction with the patient, is also considered. The last chapter reflects on the meaning and metapsychological function of the theoretical and technical tools used along the treatment of Nair. Such tools find their origins in two concepts found in the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty. Referring to the corporeal underpinnings of intersubjectivity, the notions of co-perception and reflection in the other were appropriated theoretically in tire context of the psychoanalytical practice of the author andused in a reflection about the physics of light embedded in holography. The thesis concludes by showing that the clinical case of Nair confines the hypothesis that the subject constitutes the object before constituting itself as an I. It also shows that this hypothesis can be extended in its epistemological and ontological meaning in the theoretical field formed by the confluence of optics (the physics of light) and depth psychology (or metapsychology). The thesis proposes that this theoretical and practical field should be called psychologrammatic and, as such, it constitutes a new scientific field

<p>The starting point of this essay was the frustration I felt after having read the novel Nadja (1928) written by the French surrealist André Breton. The male main character meets a woman who becomes the center of his world for a short period of time, before he in Nadja rejects her, and in Bruges-la-morte kills her. The Real And The Imaginary Thresholds Of Ottoman SubjectivityTastan, Coskun 01 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT
THE REAL AND THE IMAGINARY THRESHOLDS OF OTTOMAN SUBJECTIVITY
TaStan, CoSkun
Ph.D., Department of Sociology
Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erdogan YILDIRIM
March 2010, 262 pages.
This work examines the nature of frames that restrict our perspectives and thus give birth to such sociological entities like societies, communities and nations. How is the dualism of &ldquo / inside-outside&rdquo / created on sociological and psychic levels? More importantly, what instruments play what kind of roles in the creation of that dualism? Examining the formation of Ottoman subjectivity as a case, this study gives original answers to these questions. The psychoanalytic theory, which opened a new methodological domain for the social sciences in the past century, productively accommodated a good amount of works on these questions. Sigmund Freud&rsquo / s pioneering works on the dynamics of human psyche and Jacques Lacan&rsquo / s theories of human subjectivity played important roles in the improvement of this domain. Beginning from the second half of the past century, discussions on identity and belonging, as well as such furious social questions as nationalism, racism and xenophobia, have been held in the light of the new approaches of psychoanalytic theories in the field of social sciences. In this sense, this study can be seen as a part of those approaches, because methodologically, it bases itself on the opportunities offered by a particular psychoanalytic theory, namely, that of a French psychoanalyst, Jacques Lacan. I pick up two of Lacan&rsquo / s productively scrutinized concepts, namely the &ldquo / real&rdquo / and the &ldquo / imaginary&rdquo / , to develop a particular perspective towards this question: How is the dualism of inside-outside created in different contexts throughout the Ottoman history, so that this dualism could give birth to Ottoman subjectivity? Taking the two Lacanian concepts as a base, I analyze the instruments that play the role of &ldquo / thresholds&rdquo / in the formation of the dualism of &ldquo / inside-outside&rdquo / , under two general headings: The &ldquo / real thresholds&rdquo / and the &ldquo / imaginary thresholds&rdquo / . To put in a very brief manner, a &ldquo / real threshold&rdquo / is born out of any material obstacle that puts restrictions of any kind to the abilities of human body (natural obstacles like mountains, rivers and oceans, as well as designed obstacles like any object of war architecture, for instance, fall into this heading). Imaginary thresholds, on the other hand, are the &ldquo / images of selves&rdquo / that reflect back to us on the social ground, just in the same manner as our mirror-images come back to us and provide us with a subjective feeling of self (like the diplomatic texts and the mythologies). Although I borrow the two Lacanian terms (i.e. real and imaginary) to build up a theory of thresholds, I do not hesitate to bend and reshape those concepts whenever necessary, to build the conceptual tools into a rather ergonomic manner.

Por fim, aborda a criança autora de ato infracional sob medidas de proteção por meio dos argumentos teóricos do discurso do capitalista e da noção de lei simbólica em psicanálise / This paper aims at discussing the matter of child offender and the application of protective measures by child protection authorities in São Paulo-SP and, with that, aims to bring contributions for the implementation of these measures. To apprehend the current context of these measures, the emergence of child protection authorities and child offenders situation, makes a historical survey on the subject. Further, it presents a theoretical research within legal landscape on the concepts of act of infraction, socioeducational measures and protection applied by justice and child protection authorities, respectively, in these cases. Qualitative research field is the core of this work. Listening child protective authorities, aiming to understand their experiences in care and management on these cases, articulates a number of questions such as attribution or not of act of infraction committed by children, the understanding of protection measures as guarantees or restriction of the rights and the matter of competence in these situations. To conclude the first part of the work, these questions are developed, in which it extracts the research hypothesis: what is the place of child offender under protective measures?. Through this questioning, conjecture that it is the child who is between the guarantee and the restriction of rights, which forges the notion of \"out-of-place\". Forward to a conceptual articulation about places of discourse in psychoanalysis, clarifies childs places as a subject in the four discourses proposed by Jacques Lacan and the child conception. Finally, discusses child offender under protective measures through the theoretical arguments of the capitalist discourse and the notion of symbolic law in psychoanalysis

Ideologie a psychoanalýza v kontextu post-strukturalisticky orientované politické teorie / Ideology and psychoanalysis in the context of post-structurally oriented political thoughtKatsaros, Denis January 2017 (has links)
The first aim of the thesis is to demonstrate the structural congruence between the discourse theory, as is formulated in the work of political philospoher Ernesto Laclau, and the Lacanian psychoanalytical discouse. Moreover, we claim that any potential attempt to remove or omit the theoretical connection with Lacanian thinking from Laclauan work is illegitimate and thwart a coherence of this work. Through this demonstration we want to reach our second aim, which is to reconstruct a theory of discourse and ideology in particular which can consistently draw upon theories of both Jacques Lacan and Ernesto Laclau. To reinforce our argumentation in context of this second aim, it turned out to be very fruitful to introduce another contemporary thinker, Slavoj Žižek, to our theoretical exposition. Joining these two aims made possible a delineation of post-structurally and at the same time psychoanalytically oriented critical political theory of ideology and society.

Herr nollochsåvidare : En studie av subjektet i Gösta Oswalds En privatmans vedermödorMellgren, Carl January 2023 (has links)
This is an essay about the swedish modernist writer and poet Gösta Oswald’s novel En privatmans vedermödor. The essay focuses on the question about how he uses the modernist language to portray the subject and main character Mr O. Oswald’s novel and his portrayal of the subject is compared and contrasted to earlier ideas about the subject in the modernist and pessimistic traditions presented by philosophers, e g Friedrich Nietzsche. Oswald’s literary style and ideas are also compared to his contemporary modernist writers, for instance Stig Dagerman. Through a psychoanalytical reading of Oswald’s novel using mostly Jacques Lacan’s theories about language the essay argues that it is a story about the nothingness of the subject. It’s also argued that the environment in the novel and Oswald’s use of mythological and classical motifs from Orpheus, Virgil and Dante enhances the themes of nothingness and the bleak outlook on life in the nihilistic post World War II cultural climate. / <p>Slutgiltigt godkännandedatum: 2023-05-30</p>
