¿Opiniones, normas o pura necesidad? : La modalidad deóntica y la modalidad dinámica a través de deber y tener que

Thegel, Miriam January 2017 (has links)
This study focuses on the notions of deontic and dynamic modality in Spanish and how they are expressed through the modal verbs deber ‘must’ and tener que ‘have to’. The analysis is based on a corpus of political debates from the European Parliament, conducted 2010‒2011 by Spanish MEPs. In total, 578 occurrences of deber and 334 occurrences of tener que have been studied in detail, in order to understand their semantic and pragmatic behavior. Out of the 912 cases, 860 were classified as deontic necessity and 52 as dynamic necessity. When separating the deontic readings from the dynamic ones, the notions of volitivity and factuality proved to be crucial: whereas deontic cases are volitive and non-factual, dynamic cases can be described as non-volitive and, to a high extent, factual. In order to further examine the deontic uses, four classificatory variables were taken into account, namely, grammatical person, degree of agentivity, tense and source of the necessity. The distributions of deber and tener que were analyzed using Chi-square tests. Statistically significant differences were found for all four variables. The results show that deber is highly preferred in the third person, whereas tener que occurs equally often in the first and third person. Moreover, deber occurs more frequently in contexts which obscure the responsible agent, such as the impersonal se construction and inanimate subjects. As far as tense is concerned, the major difference between deber and tener que is found in the conditional tense, where tener que barely occurs, while deber is fairly frequent. A final difference between the two verbs is that the speaker usually is the source of the necessity when tener que is used, whereas deber is the first option when the speaker refers to another source or authority. In conclusion, it is argued, firstly, that there is a clear difference between deontic and dynamic modality in Spanish, and secondly, that deber and tener que display different semantic and pragmatic functions in deontic contexts, pointing towards an intersubjective use of deber and a subjective use of tener que.

This work is based on the hypothesis that, in asymmetrical relationships between the speaker and the hearer, the upper hierarchical position occupied by the speaker favors the interpretation of a volitive expression as a deontic manifestation. Based on the functionalist approach of modality, the present thesis analyzes volitive verbs and deontic verbs in the speeches of Brazilian President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2006), in situations in which hearers corresponded to different hierarchical degrees in relation to the speaker. Thus, the objectives of the present work are (i) to describe the manifestation of volition in an attempt to characterize it as a deontic subtype or as a type of modality; (ii) to analyze the relationship between volition and order and to describe the effects of meaning resulting from the use of these modal qualifications in this specific type of interaction and (iii) to analyze the relationship between the hierarchical order of the speakers, the expression and the interpretation of the modality. It is possible to observe that the volitive verbs can present two semantic values: a prototypically volitive interpretation and a deontic interpretation when a given set of syntactical, semantic and pragmatic aspects is reached. It is also possible to verify that the volition actually constitutes a type of modality which is different from the deontic modality.

Essentialism, nominalism, and modality : the modal theories of Robert Kilwardby & John Buridan

Johnston, Spencer C. January 2015 (has links)
In the last 30 years there has been growing interest in and a greater appreciation of the unique contributions that medieval authors have made to the history of logic. In this thesis, we compare and contrast the modal logics of Robert Kilwardby and John Buridan and explore how their two conceptions of modality relate to and differ from modern notions of modal logic. We develop formal reconstructions of both authors' logics, making use of a number of different formal techniques. In the case of Robert Kilwardby we show that using his distinction between per se and per accidens modalities, he is able to provide a consistent interpretation of the apodictic fragment of Aristotle's modal syllogism and that, by generalising this distinction to hypothetical construction, he can develop an account of connexive logic. In the case of John Buridan we show that his modal logic is a natural extension of the usual Kripke-style possible worlds semantics, and that this modal logic can be shown to be sound and complete relative to a proof-theoretic formalisation of Buridan's treatment of the expository syllogism.

Como debe ser : La traducción al sueco del verbo deber en una novela contemporáne / Como debe ser : The translation of the spanish verb deber into Swedish in a contemporary novel

Sveréus, Camilla January 2013 (has links)

Instance segmentation using 2.5D data

Öhrling, Jonathan January 2023 (has links)
Multi-modality fusion is an area of research that has shown promising results in the domain of 2D and 3D object detection. However, multi-modality fusion methods have largely not been utilized in the domain of instance segmentation. This master’s thesis investigated if multi-modality fusion methods can be applied to deep learning instance segmentation models to improve their performance on multi-modality data. The two multi-modality fusion methods presented, input extension and feature fusions, were applied to a two-stage instance segmentation model, Mask R-CNN, and a single-stage instance segmentation model, RTMDet. Models were trained on different variations of preprocessed RGBD and ToF data provided by SICK IVP, as well as RGBD data from the publicly available NYUDepth dataset. The master’s thesis concludes that the multi-modality fusion method presented as feature fusion can be applied to the Mask R-CNN model to improve the networks performance by 1.8%points (1.8%pt.) bounding box mAP and 1.6%pt. segmentation mAP on SICK RGBD, 7.7%pt. bounding box mAP and 7.4%pt. segmentation mAP on ToF, and 7.4%pt. bounding box mAP and 7.4%pt. segmentation mAP on NYUDepth. The RTMDet model saw little to no improvements from the inclusion of depth but had similar baseline performance as the improved Mask R-CNN model that utilized feature fusion. The input extension method saw no improvements to performance as it faced technical implementation limitations.

Interaction entre le temps, l'aspect et le mode dans les phrases complexes en mandarin moderne / Interaction between tense, aspect and mood in complex sentences in modern Mandarin

Chuang, Yuan-Ting 22 January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation is a corpus-based study of the tense, aspect and mood (TAM) and the interaction between these three categories in complex sentences in modern Mandarin Chinese. It aims to answer three questions related to the interpretation of temporality in Mandarin: (i) How temporal, aspectual and modal categories are marked and how they interact in complex sentences? ; (ii) What are the differences between the interactions of TAM in complex sentences and those in simple sentences? ; (iii) How is temporal sequence expressed in Mandarin? The temporal theory of Comrie (1985) and the aspectual model developed by Tournadre (2004) will be used as the theoretical framework to analyze the data. In the first part, we first introduce the concepts and theories of TAM used in general linguistics. Then we discuss the linguistic means used in Mandarin to convey temporal, aspectual and modal concepts, and the functioning of these three categories in simple sentences in order to compare it with the functioning in complex sentences. The second part is devoted to the analysis the interaction of TAM categories in various types of complex sentences which include those in subordinate clauses and verbal construction in series.

A Comparison of Treatment Planning Modalities for the Pediatric Dental Patient

Holland, Martha M 01 January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: To assess the treatment modalities of pediatric dentists for restoring Class II lesions in primary molars. Methods: A survey of eight cases was emailed to AAPD members, who were asked to choose a stainless steel crown (SSC) or composite resin. Treatment choice was associated with provider type, years in practice, behavior management, lesion detection, and patient age. Results: Clinically detectable caries restored under general anesthesia were treated more often with a SSC. Faculty and residents chose a SSC at a greater rate. Providers with 10 or more years experience chose a SSC more often. Conclusions: The scope of treatment planning encompasses numerous factors. Because of the multifactorial nature of treatment planning for the pediatric dental patient, it would be beneficial for the AAPD to produce a treatment planning decision tree in order to better direct practitioners in their development of patient-centered treatment plans.

The Missae De Beata Virgine C. 1500-1520: A Study of Transformation From Monophonic to Polyphonic Modality

Woodruff, Lawrence Theodore 08 1900 (has links)
While musical sources and documents from throughout the Middle Ages reveal that mode was an enduring and consciously derived trait of monophonic chant, modality in later polyphony shares neither the historical span nor the theoretical clarity of its monophonic counterpart. Modern theorists are left with little more than circumstantial evidence of the early development of modality in polyphony. This study attempts to shed light on the problem by detailed analysis of a select body of paraphrase masses from the early sixteenth century. First, it correlates the correspondence between the paraphrased voice and the original chant, establishing points of observation that become the basis of melodic analysis. Then, these points are correlated with known rules of counterpoint. Exceptions are identified and examined for their potential to place emphasis on individual mode-defining pitches. A set of tools is derived for quantifying the relative strength of cadential actions. Levels of cadence are defined, ranging from full, structural cadences to surfacelevel accentuations of individual pitches by sixth-to-octave dyadic motions. These cadence levels are traced through the Missae de beata virqine repertoire from c. 1500-1520, a repertoire that includes masses of Josquin, Brumel, La Rue, Isaac, and Rener. While the Credos, based on two chant sources—one early (11th century) and one later (15th century)—showed little modal consistency, the Kyries show some suggestion of purposeful modal expression; and the Glorias show even greater implications. Results of the study have potential application in sixteenth-century music scholarship to such important issues as musica ficta, performance practice, text underlay, and form.

Mouvements et modalités : l’interprétation et la transformation de la dunamis et de l’energeia chez Hegel et chez Heidegger / Movements and Modalities : The Interpretation and Transformation of dunamis and energeia in the Philosophies of Hegel and Heidegger

Sauder, Christopher 11 February 2012 (has links)
This study constructs a dialogue between Hegel and Heidegger, within the framework of the Aristotelian conceptuality of the processual fulfilment of being. The fundamental divergences between the two German philosophers concerning movement, modality and time are analyzed in terms of their interpretations, adaptations, and transformations of the notions of potentiality and actuality. I begin by developing two contrasting conceptions of potentiality and actuality – immanent acts and transitive movements – that serve to mark out the different trajectories of interpretations made by Hegel and Heidegger. I then turn to an analysis of the numerous lecture courses both philosophers gave on Aristotle. Finally, I show how certain of their fundamental philosophical breakthroughs rely on the kinetic conceptuality of the Stagirite, even if the limitations of those Aristotelian paradigms ultimately force Hegel and Heidegger to transgress them. It turns out that Hegel, taking his point of depart from the priority and immanence of energeia, understood as the circular and atemporal movement of the dialectic, ends up with a theory of modality bearing close resemblance to that of the Megarians. Heidegger, on the other hand, understands the Aristotelian production discourse as a proto-phenomenology, which he nevertheless finds insufficient for conceptualizing the essential movement of Dasein, due to its overriding teleological orientation. Nevertheless, Heidegger remains Aristotelian in his insistence on the intrinsic relation between the movement of phenomenological appearing and time.
