Tradição, nacionalismo e modernidade: o monumento Duque de Caxias / Tradition, nationalism and modernity: the monument Duque de Caxias

Ribeiro, Ana Carolina Fróes 31 October 2006 (has links)
This dissertation concerns the monument Duque de Caxias in the city of São Paulo, by the modernist sculptor Victor Brecheret. The analysis of the monument is based on its iconography, on newly found documents about the project and the creation of the monument, as well as related literature. This analysis discusses the conception, creation, and integration of the monument, as well as its opacity in the current urban context. It also shows how these aspects were influenced by the development and modernization of the city of São Paulo, by the process of making an national identity, by invention of tradition, by changes in political and ideological views during the first half of the twentieth century, as well as by the military roots of the project. The opacity mentioned above is emphasized, particularly when it is compared with another monument by the same sculptor, created in the same period, and until today a symbol of São Paulo - the monument às Bandeiras.

Cora's poetry, while expressing the memory and identity of Vila Boa inhabitants, served as an argumentative basis in the preparation of this dossier in what concerns the town original aspects as an authentic representative of the Brazilian colonial period, and in which simplicity and ancient customs remain. The house of the poet has become a symbol of Goias. The poem which praises it more, Goiás, minha cidade, was used on the front page of the dossier in a clear demonstration of this remarkable woman s strength, as well as her power in the local culture. This written account determines the persistence of Goias over the centuries and justifies its importance for all people through the defense of its conservation and the resultant need to preserve the architectural site.

Ecological and Genetic Variation Among Populations of <em>Boechera caeruleamontana</em> sp. nov. (Brassicaceae) from Blue Mountain and Dinosaur National Monumentin Eastern Utah and Western Colorado

Snyder, Melissa 01 April 2017 (has links)
Boechera is a large genus of flowering plants whose taxa are found primarily in North America. Boechera vivariensis (S.L. Welsh) W.A. Weber (the Park rockcress) is restricted to the Uintah Basin on Weber sandstone substrates in the vicinity of Dinosaur National Monument and Blue Mountain. The nomenclature of Park rockcress is significantly impacted by the discovery that the type collections of the taxon represent a rare, apomictic diploid resulting from the hybridization between B. thompsonii and an undescribed sexual diploid (to be called Boechera caeruleamontana sp. nov. Allphin and Windham). As a result, greater information is needed regarding how B. vivariensis and B. caeruleamontana. are distributed geographically in the region of Dinosaur National Monument and surrounding areas. Thus, we performed genetic analyses on leaf samples taken from over 50 individuals at known sites of B. vivariensis throughout its geographic range. Individuals from each site were also compared morphologically. We also compared associated plant communities at each site and characterized the soils. In our thorough sampling, we did not pick up B. vivariensis. All individuals sampled belonged to B. caeruleamontana, suggesting that most individuals previously assigned to B. vivariensis, are actually representative of B. caeruleamonanta. Populations of B. caeruleamontana were genetically diverse compared to other Boechera species, most likely indicative of its insect pollination strategy. However, all populations had lower heterozygosity than expected based upon Hardy-Weinberg expectations. Reproductive and genetic data indicated that populations are showing signs of inbreeding. The population at Jones Hole Fish Hatchery was most unique genetically, morphologically, and reproductively.

Samspelet mellan grafisk design och ljusdesign i utställningssalen "Vägen till det förflutna"

Hellsvik, Olivia, Korpelin, Mindy January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop recommendations for using more efficient lighting and better graphic design to create a more uniform structure in the exhibition hall “Road to the past” in Jönköping County Museum by answering the following questions at issue: 1) How are the objects in the exhibition hall “Road to the past” exposed today? 2) How can you use lighting and graphic design to create structure in the exhibition and strengthen the expression in the exhibition? Our work is based on observations and open group interviews. We observed the exhibition hall “Road to the past” during day and evening. In the same hall, we observed a guided tour that we followed up with open group interviews. Finally, we observed four exhibition halls in Stockholm that are located at the Historical Museum, Royal Armory and at the Army Museum. The purpose of the observation of exhibition hall "Road to the past" was to answer the first question of issue. The observations in Stockholm, the observation of the tour and the interviews were some of the basis for responding to our second question of issue. The results of this study show that graphic design and lighting design can enhance the expression of the exhibition hall. Examples are given of how to work with colors that attract attention and how information texts can be designed in a guided and easy to read manner. In addition, it explains how the lighting can be adjusted to the objects in the hall as well as the human vision. To spatially dispose the objects in the exhibition in a logic and guiding way is also described as a method to enhance the expression of the exhibition. The result of the investigation shows that through color selection, and outline of the lighting one also can create a flow of the exhibition hall that leads the visitor through the exhibition. We conclude that the visitors’ experience of the exhibition hall “Road to the past” at the moment is strongly linked to whether it is part of a guided tour or not. The essay discusses solutions so that the exhibition can be more self-guiding.

Gabrielsson, Catharina January 2006 (has links)
Transgressing the borders between politics and aesthetics, imaginary and physical forms, this dissertation pursues a broad interdisciplinary exploration of the construction of public space. In order to confront the dual character of public space – a physical realm with unclear borders, as well as an evasive concept, imbued with ideas of freedom, critique and democracy – the dissertation addresses public space as a ”medium”, that is, as a material for aesthetic practice and in terms of communication, as a “projective screen” of society. Using the refurbishment of Stortorget in Kalmar as its generative case, the dissertation examines the conditions for making and thinking such a space, whereby the hidden assumptions of public space are brought to the fore. Due to the hybrid character and complexity of the Stortorget project, carried out as a seamless collaboration between art and architecture, it in addition raises issues that are highly significative for the identity and legitimacy of the respective disciplines. Focussing on the concept of “place”, and tracing its role within art and architecture theory and practice since the paradigmatic shift between late modernity and postmodernity, the dissertation examines the conflictual relationship between art and architecture in order to gain an understanding of them as different, yet intimately connected, ways of producing new forms of reality. The claim made throughout the dissertation is that public space cannot be “reconstructed” on the basis of historical forms and ideals – rather it must be continuously reinvented in accordance with a critical understanding of democracy. Ultimately, the dissertation is an examination of how, and why, public space can be defended as an indispensible form of society and of the complex coalition of its aesthetical and political effects. / QC 20100824

Seasonality and Ecosystem Response in Prehistoric Agricultural Regions of Central Arizona

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: This thesis explores the independent effects of the manipulation of rocks into alignments, prehistoric farming, and season on soil properties in two areas with a history of prehistoric agriculture in central Arizona, Pueblo la Plata within the Agua Fria National Monument (AFNM), and an archaeological site north of the Phoenix basin along Cave Creek (CC). Soil properties, annual herbaceous biomass and the physical properties of alignments and surface soils were measured and compared across the landscape, specifically on: 1) agricultural rock alignments that were near the archaeological site 2) geologically formed rock alignments that were located 0.5-1 km away from settlements; and 3) areas both near and far from settlements where rock alignments were absent. At AFNM, relatively well-built rock alignments have altered soil properties and processes while less-intact alignments at CC have left few legacies. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Biology 2011

Zhodnocení úrovně vybavenosti vybraných památkových objektů v České a Slovenské republice z hlediska jejich protipožárního zabezpečení / Assessment of the level of equipment of selected historical buildings in the Czech republic and in Slovakia in terms of fire safety

SVOBODA, Petr January 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with the issue of fire protection of historical buildings in the Czech and Slovak Republics. Input information that was used in the thesis were obtained from the literature or other freely accessible sources, the Fire Brigade of the Czech Republic, the Fire and Rescue Service of the Slovak Republic and the owners or managers of buildings. The main objective is to evaluate the facilities of selected historical buildings in terms of fire protection. According the objective has been defined the research question "Are the monuments in the territory of the Czech and Slovak Republic secured in a comparable level against the risk of fire?". An integral part is also proposing possible technical and technological elements and organizational measures which may lead to increased fire safety of monuments on the territory of the two abovementioned republics. Fulfillment of goals was possible, based on our investigation, when the first identification of monuments in the Czech and Slovak Republics, whose owners, respectively. Administrators were asked to complete a questionnaire containing questions related to fourteen facilities surveyed the building fire safety equipment and material means of fire protection. The completion of that survey were also asked at the same time members of the Fire and Rescue Service geographically relevant regions of the Czech Republic and members of the Fire and Rescue Corps of the Slovak Republic. Specifically, there were members who are employed in divisions or departments of fire prevention of the competent authorities of the state fire supervision. After evaluating the data collected through questionnaires and in some cases based on electronic correspondence or telephone conversations has been possible to answer the research question. Based on available information it is apparently that the fire protection of historical buildings in the Czech and Slovak Republic are treated by the authorities, not only the state fire supervision, but also themselves owners or facility managers very seriously and the fire safety of these monuments can be described as comparable. Unfortunately, in the research failed to varify the availability of surveyed historical buildings for vehicles of emergency fire-fighting units, which was based on the results of the analysis identified as one of the most risky points of fire protection of monuments. It can therefore only consider whether the availability of objects of that type in terms driveways is satisfactory. Proposing of possible measures is done on the basis of not only the information collected from facility managers and bodies of the state fire supervision of both republics, but also on the basis of the KARS analysis, which aimed to identify the most threatening phenomena which could have a negative impact on the status quo of monuments, in terms of fire protection. Answering a defining research questions and performing the analysis using method KARS has been achieved the objective of this thesis. In addition to the methodology and outcomes of the research are in the thesis presented brief information concerning fire protection in the age of the buildings and structures construction, which are currently presents as heritage buildings, and basic information of the principles of fire protection of historical monuments under applicable laws of the Czech and Slovak Republic. Fire protection of historical buildings has been underestimated for years. Currently, in connection with the ensuing fires significant buildings of historical value, it is to safeguard of historical buildings against the emergence and spread of a fire and how to dispose of potential fire utmost importance. As in other areas or sectors, as well as in fire protection of historic buildings is particularly important in the prevention, thus adopting such a system of measures to prevent a fire, or if there is a fire that damages caused by extraordinary events are possible smallest.
