Groundwater and Surface-Water Interactions along Lower Medano Creek, Great Sand Dunes National Monument, Colorado

Hadlock, Gregg L. 01 May 1995 (has links)
The objectives of this investigation are as follows: 1) review the existing hydrogeologic data for the San Luis Valley, the Great Sand Dunes Monument, and Medano Creek; 2) review the surface-water data that have been collected on Medano Creek; 3) collect or review previously collected water-level data obtained in the area of lower Medano Creek and correlate them with the surface-water data; 4) conduct constant-head permeameter tests on sand samples collected near the ground surface along lower Medano Creek; 5) produce a conceptual model of lower Medano Creek; and 6) produce a numerical model of lower Medano Creek that will predict the effect that a lowering of the regional water table could have on the terminus of flow of Medano Creek. The complex hydrogeologic conditions under lower Medano Creek have been approximated with three homogeneous and anisotropic layers. A complex system of confining layers is represented by a single low-hydraulic-conductivity layer in the middle. Numerical-modeling results suggest that the location of the terminus of flow in Medano Creek will recede significantly in response to a lowering of the regional water table, possibly by as much as 21,000 feet (6,400 meters) if the regional water table is lowered 150 feet (46 meters). These results indicate the qualitative effect that a lowering of the regional water table would have on lower Medano Creek, but they cannot be considered to be precise quantitative predictions. The results should be regarded with caution due to the paucity of data available.

Geology of North Craters of the Moon National Monument, Idaho

Sidle, William C. 01 January 1979 (has links)
The purpose of the investigation was to map the geology of the north end of Craters of the Moon National Monument and surrounding area. A stratigraphic sequence of Late Paleozoic sedimentary and Tertiary volcanic rocks was compiles and the structures of these rocks and contact relationships with intrusions were delineated. Grade and facies of contact metamorphism were defined. The Snake River Plain basalts were also mapped. The sources of these flows were determined where possible. Preexisting structures and relationships of vents to earlier faulting were explored in ascertaining extensions of the Great Rift Zone into the Pioneer Mountains. Petrographic descriptions of the rock units were completed. Study of the economic geology was not undertaken. The interested reader is referred to Nelson (1969) for descriptions of the mineral deposits in the Lava Creek Mining District.

Vodojemy - Brno, Žlutý kopec / Reservoirs - Brno, Zluty kopec (Yellow hill)

Tomanová, Tereza Unknown Date (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the possible use of now defunct reservoirs on the Yellow Hill. This water supply complex consists of three underground reservoirs and a technical house. The area is spread over a large plot of land overgrown with wild vegetation in the middle of a residential area. The set of underground reservoirs, covered by a system of arches supported by pillars, represents a unique architectural and technical monument. The aim of the proposal is to make the reservoir area accessible to the public through new functions while preserving their historical value. The main motive of the concept is an interactive water museum built in the youngest reinforced concrete reservoir. The exhibition deals, among other things, with a very current topic of sustainable water management. The complex is complemented by a new visitor center, which will make it possible to access the reservoirs through a new entrance to the underground. The existing unmaintained area of greenery will be transformed into a public park independent of the operation of reservoirs.

Sport och idrott i offentlig konst : En inventering

Karlsson, Malvin January 2021 (has links)
Sports in public art is an inventory and analysis of public art in Sweden representing sports. Sports is a phenomenon that to a very large extent shaped Swedish society during the 20th century and beyond. In what way has it left marks on public art?  The overall aim of my thesis is to inventory and define a field that is largely unexplored: Swedish public art that represents sports. Further is my aim to try to draw a representative picture of art within this field. The essay touches on two social practices, the world of sports and the arts, where socio-cultural hierarchies of power are created and maintained and where male dominance has been strong. In the essay I analyse and discuss meaning formation of this art based on gender studies. The inventory consists of 358 art works from 148 municipalities. 37 per cent of these works of art represent male athletes and 13 per cent female athletes. There are works of art were both sexes are represented and also several works of art where it’s impossible to determine the sex. Also, there are several works of art that do not represent people. Most works of art are to be find outdoors and 53 per cent has a connection/relation to a sports facility.  In the inventory the work of art is classified in three categories: Sports motive, Monuments of athletes and Sports associative work of art. Analyses are made within and between these categories and the collected material is also analysed in a time perspective. The oldest work of art in my inventory dates back to 1910 and the analyse continues up to present days.

Minnesvårdens kulturarvsprocesser : En diskursanalys av tsunamikatastrofens minnesmonument Gravitational Ripples

Olsson, Hedvig January 2023 (has links)

Holmström, Isabelle January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate which type of society could supply the resources required to construct the cairn monuments along the coastal regions of Västerbotten during the Bronze Age. The study is centered on a cluster of cairns within the parishes of Bygdeå, Nysätra and Lövånger, situated at elevations between 31-52 meters above today’s sea level. Through analyses and calculations of the cairns themselves and their proximity to stone quarrying materials, the volume of each cairn within the chosen cluster has been used to evaluate how long it took these monument builders to complete the construction of the cairns. The workforce required is shown to heavily depend on the size of the cairn and its location from the stone material. Theoretically some cairns could have been constructed in just a few days, whereas some took significantly more time to construct. The indicated social types capable of providing the necessary resources were found to be avariation of nomadic band and/or semi-sedentary tribal communities composed of extended families. Powerful cheiftains and societies with greater resources weren’t necessarily found to be a requirement. The procurement of food and other resources varied and over time the economic foundations gradually shifted from a mainly hunting and fishing reliance to embracing cultivation and animal husbandry.

Between Commemoration and Criminalization: Demystifying, Demythologizing, and Debunking the Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial

Ferguson, Matthew 27 September 2023 (has links)
While significant scholarly research exists on memorialization and commemoration, little exists on memorials to police officers, prison guards, border agents, and other penal system actors described as "law enforcement" or "peace" officers. This doctoral dissertation helps fill this gap by examining three questions: 1) How is penal system work staged and performed through the dramatic spectacle of national commemoration? 2) How does the memorialization of penal system actors as heroes generate and maintain support for punishment and the social distance between ordinary citizens and individuals in conflict with the law? 3) What myths are constructed and perpetuated through these memorials that legitimize the existence, expansion, and domination of punitive ways of thinking about and responding to criminalized conflict and harms? I explore these questions through a case study of "The Canadian Police and Peace Officers Memorial" (CPPOM) on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada through a thematic analysis and thick description of data from over 850 newspaper articles, 40 magazine articles, 19 semi-structured interviews, 18 survey responses, and participant observation at the memorial - including recently created running and cycling events. Rather than just a national day or annual gathering of authorities on the last Sunday in September, I argue that the CPPOM is also an overlooked penal system service, organization, and institution, which is integral to broader and growing attempts by police chiefs and associations, as well as other penal system actors and their families in Canada and the United States, to further expand and entrench penal system practices as central to the Canadian national identity through organizational memories and myths that work to increase support for penal system officers by staging them as prepared, professional, heroic, effective, and united. I reflect on the implications of the findings and future avenues for research on memorials like the CPPOM, whose birth in the late-1970s is shown to stem not simply from the "murder" of a rookie Ottawa police officer as is claimed during the memorial activities today, but also from a lack of preparedness and professionalism in the arrest of the person living with mental illness that led to the death of the rookie officer, as well as other national, local, and structural dilemmas facing penal system actors at the time. In examining and providing a new account of the origins, development, meanings, and role of the CPPOM, I contribute to the demystification, demythologization, and debunking of this national memorial, thus contributing to critical criminology and growing attempts to move beyond the punitive responses it naturalizes and legitimates. Although helping participants heal, connect, and move forward after death - which for some, occurs just one step or pedal stroke at a time - I show how the CPPOM is also a forgetful and misleading performance, which has consistently staged public criticism of policing as unfair and "violent crime" and a perceived lack of respect for police and the law as crises, not of mental illness, addiction, poverty, racism, or the real harms and limitations of policing and punishment themselves, but of a lack of law and order that can only be secured through the further entrenchment of penality and the work of "peace" officers.

Att lyfta ett monument / Lifting a Monument

Lagercrantz, Love January 2020 (has links)
The name of the project is "Lifting a monument" and is about a new extension to Stockholm's city library. The proposal aims to expand the public areas of the library and the spatial focus has been the bazaars of 1930 facing Sveavägen. The library is a unique cultural heritage and probably Sweden's most famous building abroad. Making a new extension to such a monument instantly raises many issues. My question when I started was about how I as an architect should think when designing a supplement in a historically sensitive context. Which approaches are most appropriate in such a charged and world-unique environment? As an architect, I think that one should always carefully consider its surroundings and relate to it in its proposal. In this project I have been given the opportunity and challenge to practice the art of relating in a context of exceptional importance. The method I have worked out I call Sampling. The goal in designing the extension has been to submit to the main building without falling into the pastiche. My thesis is that I can allow myself quite a lot of freedom, as long as I identify and reuse the supporting motifs, materials, room organization, color schemes and the like from the library. In this way, the goal is that the two buildings will harmonize and, hopefully, also lift each other.
