Not Japanese

Brina, Elizabeth 18 May 2018 (has links)
A memoir that focuses on the complications of growing as the only daughter of a mother from Okinawa and a father from the United States. They met at a nightclub, where her mother worked as a waitress, outside an Army base, where her father was stationed during U.S. Military occupation of the island. These marriages between Okinawan women and U.S. Servicemen have been quite common since 1945, after the Battle of Okinawa, when a massive complex of bases was first established. Okinawan women must leave their homes and their families to follow their husbands to the United States, where they are faced with challenges of racism, language barriers and isolation. Their children often grow up rejecting and resenting their Okinawan identities, causing further alienation.

My thesis film for the Master of Fine Arts degree is a 10-minute documentary entitled Loose Bodies. It traces my mom's recovery from knee replacement surgery, meanwhile exploring her relationship to her knees through interviews and archival footage and my own relationship to my body's ability to move. The film contains three animated sequences, using the Renaissance anatomical drawings of Andreas Vesalius. This report is an account of the filmmaking process from initial idea to finished film. / text

[en] MOTHER AND DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIP AND THE IMPASSES ON THE WAY TO FEMININITY / [pt] A RELAÇÃO MÃE E FILHA E OS IMPASSES NO CAMINHO DA FEMINILIDADE

ISABEL MARIA CHAVES GUIMARAES 08 November 2013 (has links)
[en] This dissertation aims to conduct a study, based on Freud and Lacan, about the constitution of femininity and about the difficulties women present in the realization of their loving relationships. The analysis of mothers and daughters is the main theme of this work since the majority of psychoanalytical texts about women deal with this subject. It was clear that the relationship between them – mothers and daughters- is structural and fundamental in order to achieve an answer about the feminine. The theoretical base for this study constitutes of the concepts of Oedipus complex and castration complex, and the studies about the psychic constitution of the neurotic subject.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcia Zalcman Setton.pdf: 1009738 bytes, checksum: 950ffa0799475ea1b721289c27c6813d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-09-08 / This study is concerned to a comprehension of the transmission process of the meanings attributed to feminine sexuality by Jewish mothers to their daughters, considering that this theme is one of the main propulsive points of social changes on the twentieth century. The guide question of this work is how this woman, who lived and is still living this whole transformation is getting to integrate the social changes and what is transmitted to the new generation: if there are modifications and of what type, in the education that these women could provide to their daughters in the sexuality area. To achieve this general purpose, a qualitative research was made, based on the new paradigmatic systemic assumptions, which specific aims were: comprehend what values and beliefs about sexuality the actual mothers received from their own mothers; how this transmission was made; what values and beliefs about sexuality theses mothers are transmitting to their daughters; in what manner this transmission is done; what values and beliefs the daughters have and how they intend to transmit to their own daughters; how these values and beliefs help in the construction of the femininity sense to these women. There have been made semi-structured interviews with women of the Jewish Community, between 45 and 55 years old and their respective daughters, between 20 and 30 years old, six secular pairs of mother and daughter and two orthodox pairs, in order to observe the difference of groups more closed to traditions and groups more integrated to the general society. These mothers are women that lived their youth on the seventeenth decade and received a traditional education, based in the cultural and social desirable stereotypes for them, but that lived during the sexual revolution, that means, a rupture in the beliefs, values and patterns of learned behaviors. As a result it was possible to observe a great influence from the social and cultural changes in the transmission of the meanings from mother to daughter, although it was noted a repetition of the familiar patterns. However, these changes weren t uniforms, varying in according with the history, beliefs, values and behaviors of each family. The secular families looked for, each one in his measure, to be opened for new reflexions to the new demands, while the orthodox needed to develop a whole range of specific resources to have their traditions survival granted. It was also observed a great women difficulty to have the autonomy preconized by the speech of the sexual revolution incorporated in their personal lives. Only one of the women interviewed crossed this limit, confronting a lot of resistance in her familiar and social life. It is important to have this in mind for the professional that is going to receive this contemporaneous woman in his clinic, in ethics parameters, to accept the other as a legitimized other, and from this base, build with her new possibilities / O interesse deste estudo se volta para uma compreensão do processo de transmissão dos significados atribuídos à sexualidade feminina pelas mães judias às suas filhas, visto que este tema é um dos principais focos propulsores das mudanças sociais do século XX.

De mãe em filha: a transmissão da feminilidade / From mother to daughter: transmission of feminineness

Ribeiro, Marina Ferreira da Rosa 06 November 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T20:40:11Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Marina Ferreira da Rosa Ribeiro.pdf: 792731 bytes, checksum: 7c1c54299532a5b866af277b04f1a74d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-11-06 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The main aim of this study was to find grounds and support from the psychoanalytical literature for the existence of specific psychological vicissitudes along the path from baby to girl to woman. The concepts put forward by certain psychoanalysts regarding this very intricate relationship and their effects on the continual challenge of becoming a woman and on the transmission of feminineness were investigated and analyzed. Freud s observations on the inexorable suppression that covers up the primordial relationship between mothers and their daughters were the starting point. Expressions for the nuances of the vestiges of this archaic relationship with mothers were sought; for daughters, their mothers are both the primary and the secondary objects of identification. Mothers eroticize their baby girls, leaving sensual traces for future adult enjoyment of female sexuality. In this relationship of like that engenders like, there is a potential risk of narcissistic entrapment and symbiotic illusion. Hostility between mothers and daughters was taken to be a search for psychological differentiation, which is always present to a greater or lesser extent. The passion between mother and daughter was shown firstly through the myth of Demeter and Persephone. The tragedy of Electra was dealt with as the other face of passion: hate. The conceptual framework surrounding feminineness in psychoanalysis was investigated and linked in, and the origin and development of the following concepts was explained: primary female identification (Paulo de Carvalho Ribeiro), primary homosexuality (Jacqueline Godfrind), primary female position or phase of feminineness (Melanie Klein) and primary maternalism and primary femaleness (Florence Guignard). The film Autumn Sonata by Ingmar Bergman was analyzed, focusing on the unsustainable nostalgia of meeting the mother, which was always dreamed of and never achieved. Continuing the reflections on the film, the male viewpoint and its indissociable dialectic connection with the female viewpoint is demonstrated. This coming together between female and male viewpoints brings to the fore the concept of psychological bisexuality. The different objective rules of mothers and fathers were also discussed. Two clinical constructions were presented: Zoe and Liz. Finally, the preciousness and tanatic , or the strength and vulnerability of the transmission of the feminineness from mothers to daughters were investigated / O objetivo principal desta pesquisa é fundamentar e sustentar, pela literatura psicanalítica, a existência de vicissitudes psíquicas específicas na trajetória bebê-menina- mulher.
