How we remember the emotional intensity of past musical experiences

Schäfer, Thomas, Zimmermann, Doreen, Sedlmeier, Peter 15 September 2014 (has links)
Listening to music usually elicits emotions that can vary considerably in their intensity over the course of listening. Yet, after listening to a piece of music, people are easily able to evaluate the music's overall emotional intensity. There are two different hypotheses about how affective experiences are temporally processed and integrated: (1) all moments' intensities are integrated, resulting in an averaged value; (2) the overall evaluation is built from specific single moments, such as the moments of highest emotional intensity (peaks), the end, or a combination of these. Here we investigated what listeners do when building an overall evaluation of a musical experience. Participants listened to unknown songs and provided moment-to-moment ratings of experienced intensity of emotions. Subsequently, they evaluated the overall emotional intensity of each song. Results indicate that participants' evaluations were predominantly influenced by their average impression but that, in addition, the peaks and end emotional intensities contributed substantially. These results indicate that both types of processes play a role: All moments are integrated into an averaged value but single moments might be assigned a higher value in the calculation of this average.

Orosanmälningar inom tandvården vid misstanke om att barn far illa / Reports of concern in dental healthcare services on suspicion of child maltreatment

Johansson, Emma, Hagberg, Ellen January 2023 (has links)
Aim: The aim was to examine dental healthcare professionals experience, actions and factors when suspecting child maltreatment and to determine barriers that affect the decision to report a concern. Method: A literature study based on 20 scientific articles of a quantitative approach. Data collection was performed using the databases DOSS, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to limit the sample. The selected articles that answered the purpose of the literature study were published between 2017-2022 and were quality-reviewed to ensure high quality. Results: The majority of dental professionals had experienced suspected cases of child maltreatment. Common actions in case of suspicion were to document injuries, report to the police or clinic manager, question the child and the parents and follow up the observations. The frequency of reports to the child protection authorities was consistently low. Barriers to reporting were concern about negative consequences, uncertainty about the reliability of the suspicion, lack of knowledge, guidelines, and routines. Conclusions: Dental professionals experiences of meeting children who are suspected of being maltreated, clear guidelines and routines, knowledge in the subject area and the subjective perception are factors that influence the tendency to report. Further research is needed to investigate which measures can lead to an increased propensity to report among dental professionals and in such a way enable more children to live a life free of violence.

GRADUATE STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS AND RESPONSES TO BULLYING FROM ACADEMIC ADVISORS

Theodora L Amuah (11205984) 30 July 2021 (has links)
<p>Workplace bullying is a major global issue which has received a lot of recognition because of its negative effects on victims’ health and work productivity. There have been many attempts to mitigate the effects of workplace bullying, leading researchers to extensively study the phenomenon in various contexts and relationships. Information on workplace bullying in the academic context, precisely relationships between academic advisors and graduate student advisees, is however, lacking. This study aimed at filling in the gap by seeking information about communicative behaviors from advisors that graduate advisees characterized as bullying, and common responses graduate advisees resorted to in the face of adversity. We also sought to understand why advisees may have responded to maltreatment in specific ways. We, therefore, proposed a working model which hypothesized a relationship between advisor negative acts, commitment levels of advisees, and advisee responses. Using Amazon’s Mechanical (MTurk) to recruit our sample, participants filled out a survey which included a few demographic questions, the revised version of the Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ-R) to measure advisor negative acts, the Exit-Voice-Loyalty-Neglect (EVLN) typology to measure advisee responses, and the Investment Model Scale (IMS) to measure advisee commitment levels to the work relationship with advisors. We verified the reliability and validity of the scales adopted for this study and ran some correlation and mediation analyses to answer our research questions and test our hypotheses. From our findings, we learned that most advisees reported personal insults occurring more frequently in their work relationships with advisors. Advisees also reported a high commitment to the work relationships with their advisors, despite maltreatment, and often responded by adopting the voice or neglect strategy. Findings from this exploratory study imply there is more information to be sought on workplace bullying between advisees and advisors in academic contexts.</p> <br> <p> </p>

A Flexible Infrastructure for Multi-Agent Systems

Sorensen, Gerrit Addison N 02 July 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Multi-Agent coordination and control has been studied for a long time, but has recently gained more interest because of technology improvements allowing smaller, more versatile robots and other types of agents. To facilitate multi-agent experiments between heterogeneous agents, including robots and UAVs, we have created a test-bed with both simulation and hardware capabilities. This thesis discusses the creation of this unique, versatile test-bed for multi-agent experiments, also a unique graph creation algorithm, and some experimental results obtained using the test-bed.

How are children affected when exposed to abuse in their household? : A qualitative study on the preschool teachers experiences of children's attitude and behavior as a result of maltreatment

Krasniqi, liridona, Ekberg, Amanda January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to highlight and investigate how preschool staff experience how children's attitude and behavior are affected when they grow up under abusive conditions at home. We want to investigate how the teachers at the preschool pay attention to the child's attitude and behavior. The study's questions focus on how the preschool staff pay attention to the child's well-being. The theories used in the study are Bronfenbrenner's developmental ecology theory and the attachment theory developed by John Bowlby and Broberg which explains which attachment patterns children develop. The results of the study have shown that children who grow up under abusive conditions at home are shown through certain behaviors and attitudes at the preschool. To answer the purpose and the question, six semi-structured interviews were conducted with six informants who work at preschools in Malmö, Svedala and Trelleborg. The result that is highlighted is that staff at the preschool pay attention to various signals in the child that may be signs that the child live under abusive conditions at home and are at risk för adverse growth. Preschool teachers can contribute to a child receiving support and help based on the staff paying attention to the child's behavior. They can make a report of concern that can result in the child receiving support and help. The results also highlight that staff at the preschool experience that it is difficult to know when to make a report of concern because it is difficult to determine if the child is in danger.
