Retrospective Reporting of Childhood Experiences and Borderline Personality Disorder Features in a Non-Clinical Sample: A Cognitive-Behavioural Perspective

Carr, Steven, steven.carr@rmit.edu.au January 2006 (has links)
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) symptoms and childhood experiences, and to explore the role of Early Maladaptive Schemas and core beliefs as variables possibly mediating this relationship. Previous research with clinical samples has established a strong link between childhood maltreatment and adult BPD (& other PD) symptoms in clinical samples. However, difficulties with these studies limit the specificity of results. For example, BPD has been shown to be highly comorbid with other axis I and axis II psychiatric conditions. Given that studies examining the relationship between BPD and childhood maltreatment generally fail to control for these comorbid conditions, the specificity of their results must be questioned. Furthermore, it has been well established that childhood familial environment is strongly related to childhood maltreatment. Again studies examining the relationship between BPD and childhood maltreatment have generally failed to concurrently assess childhood familial environments, hence opening the possibility that the relationship between BPD and childhood maltreatment may be due to family functioning rather than childhood maltreatment per se. Finally, studies linking childhood maltreatment with adult BPD have primarily utilized clinical samples. However, the primary use of clinical samples to examine the aetiology of disorders in this context ignores the vast literature showing adequate psychological functio ning for the majority of individuals exposed to childhood maltreatment. Hence, the primary aim of the current study was to examine the relationship between childhood maltreatment and adult BPD symptoms in a primarily non-clinical sample whilst statistically controlling for commonly comorbid axis I and axis II symptomatology and concurrently measuring childhood familial functioning. It was a secondary aim of the current study to examine the mediating effects of beliefs on the relationship between childhood factors (i.e., childhood maltreatment & childhood familial functioning) and adult BPD symptomatology. That is, cognitive-behavioural theorists argue that personality disorders may be triggered by adverse childhood experiences leading to maladaptive beliefs (or schemas) related to the self, others, and the world, and it is these beliefs which lead to the behavioural disturbances evident in personality disorders. One hundred and eighty-five primarily non-clinical participants completed questionnaires measuring a variety of axis I and axis II symptoms, early maladaptive schemas and core beliefs, as well as retrospective reports of family functioning and childhood maltreatment. Results showed a significant relationship between childhood factors and adult BPD symptomatology. For example, the largest correlation between BPD symptoms and a childhood factor was .27 (for childhood emotional abuse). Furthermore, early maladaptive schemas and core beliefs were found to mediate the relationship between childhood factors and adult BPD symptomatology thus supporting cognitive-behavioural theories of personality disorders. However, early maladaptive schemas and core beliefs were also found to mediate the relationship between childhood factors and other Axis I and Axis II symptoms. Hence, it was concluded that while there was some support for a cognitive mediation hypothesis for BPD symptoms, future research is needed in exploring the specificity of the cognitive mediation hypothesis for BPD.

Denton, Rudy Arthur 30 November 2005 (has links)
SUMMARY Abuse is one of the most traumatic experiences the adolescent can have and influences his total development. This research was aimed at establishing, by means of intervention, whether abuse has any implications for the adolescent's relationship with God. The pastoral and Gestalt therapy was applied to guide the abused adolescent in his relationship with God. In the pastoral Gestalt therapy approach the dynamic context of life experience and areas of meaning in the adolescent's image of God was taken into account. Thereby the impact of the adolescent's experience, observation and expectations of God was established. The starting-point of the pastoral Gestalt therapy was that the adolescent's relationship with God became dysfunctional as a result of abuse. With the aid of the intervention research model, it was concluded that the pastoral Gestalt therapeutic approach has changed the distorted God-image of the adolescent to restore the relationship with God. / Social work / M.Diac. Growing up with violent fathers: conversations with daughters

Mtetwa, Thandazile Grace Nokukhanya 11 1900 (has links)
The effects of having witnessed their fathers’ violent behaviour impacts on daughters for a long period afterwards, even in adulthood. This study explores this phenomenon by means of literature review and interviews. The literature indicates that the effects of paternal violence is linked to forced maturity, secrecy, pretending, self-blame, and negative impact on the daughter’s relationships with both parents. A narrative approach was used to interview three adult participants. The conversations were analysed using thematic analysis and hermeneutics. Themes that emerged include avoidance, ambivalence towards the parents, aggression, assertiveness, and over-responsibility. There is a tendency to avoid intense, emotionally-laden, ambiguous and unpredictable situations through the use of interpersonal vigilance, an emotionally strong poise, distancing, being agreeable and devoutness. Also, there is a fear of becoming just like their abusive father. The psychological impact of being witness to a father’s violent behaviours has long-lasting effects on daughters. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Korrektiewe institusionalisering : 'n profiel van die Suid Afrikaanse gevangene / Correctional institutionalisation : a profile of the South African prisoner

Weyers, Andries Petrus 07 February 2014 (has links)
Crime is as old as mankind. It started with an incident of theft inside Paradise and a murder outside. In order to understand the phenomenon of crime several theories were formulated over time. One fact should be recognized: All forms of trauma can be reduced to a single common factor: Control – or better said: a lack of control. A lack of personal control causes tension; tension leads to desperation; desperation leads to irresponsibility. Then the door to crime is unlocked. Fortunately all irresponsibilities doesn’t lead to crime. In order to understand the offender it is imperative to understand his background. The relationship between childhood trauma and crime cannot be denied. It is a fact that childhood traumas can lead to abnormal brain development in early childhood. For this reason special attention is paid to the processes involved in brain development, both in normal children and in maltreated ones. If not identified and intervened in time, it can lead to a situation where the cycle of frustration and desperation, and eventually crime, cannot be interrupted - not even by prisonization. Management of change (rehabilitation) must reckon with the influence of said traumas on the brain development of children. Efforts to rehabilitate the offender becomes senseless if applied for an hour once a week. Such efforts cannot repair the damage done by negative influences repeated thousands of times over many years. In the same vein it is fruitless to aim therapeutic interventions on the reason of man hoping to repair the emotional damage of his childhood. For this reason the Neurosequential Method of Therapeutics holds promise in the quest for the rehabilitation of the offender and in the fight against crime. / Penology / D. Litt. et Phil. (Penology)

Percepce násilí vůči různým věkovým skupinám u dětí na základních školách a víceletých gymnáziích / Perception of Violence against Different Age Groups of Children at Primary Schools and Eight-year Grammar School

Havelková, Šárka January 2012 (has links)
1. ABSTRACT § Key words: violence, conflict, aggression, cruelty, abuse, neglect, bullying, the perpetrator, the victim, children, adults, seniors, self-harm, suicide In this thesis I would like to focus on how children define violence, what violence includes, how to represent both the offender and victim, what is the difference in the perception of violence against various age groups and how to prevent possible violence. The theoretical part is firstly devoted to the notion of violence or similar terms synonymous to this and to explain them according to Czech and foreign authors. I have then proceeded to topics such as violence against children, adults and seniors, self-harm, suicide and the consequences of violence. In the practical section, I examined the perception of violence among students in primary school compared with students of the same age at a grammar school. I focused on the students of class sixth / ninth grade and first and fourth year of an eight-year grammar school). The survey was not only carried out in schools in the capital city but also in a smaller town.

The present study focused on professionals working in a public network of care for the neglected or socially vulnerable elderly. The significant increase in the number of elderly people in Brazilian society and the prediction of an even larger contingent in the coming decades remind professionals and society as a whole to create strategies to reduce or eliminate the neglect and social vulnerability practiced against elderly. The objective of the study was to understand the meaning of care for neglected or socially vulnerable elderly people in the public network. And as for the specific ones: To know the organization of the public network of services in the care provided to the neglected or socially vulnerable elderly; Identify the actions provided by professionals who provide care to the neglected or socially vulnerable elderly. This research was founded on the line of symbolic interactionism, due to not only the complex relationship between society, individual and the service network, but also the development of significant symbols and the process of behavior of the mind, from a philosophical orientation and facts of real existence. The methodology proposed in this thesis was qualitative, exploratory and analysis of summative content. The investigation was carried out in the city of Rio Grande / RS, a port city, where the elderly population has a statistic higher than the national indexes, being 13.81%. As far as the time of connection to the service varied between 3 to 20 years and in relation to the professional formation, 14 of the professionals had postgraduate, in the areas of Collective Health and Family Health. The technique of summative content analysis occurred in three stages: pre-analysis; the exploitation of the material that was repeated; the inference and interpretation. Results: interviews with professionals allowed us to understand that the professional is the link between the two worlds in the care of the vulnerable and neglected elderly, since when working in these universes, the professional expresses different feelings, that is, satisfaction with the resolutions of the cases and frustration due to the lack of support and sensitivity of the public managers in offering sufficient resources to maintain a proactive service. It is believed that vulnerability and neglect for the elderly will only end or be minimized if the professionals and the elderly themselves are mobilized in a participatory citizenship partnership.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION IN RURAL SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: A PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH PROJECT

Zambrano, Nelly 01 June 2018 (has links)
This research project examines resources and services to prevent families and children from entering the child welfare system in a rural town in Southern California. There is constant struggle to get the adequate services, resources and trained staff in this rural area because it is isolated and it takes about two hours’ travel time to get to the metropolitan cities. The literature review discusses child welfare services challenges, strengths and social capital to support families and children as well as the child welfare system itself in rural areas. Constructivism is the appropriate framework for this research project, because the goal of this study will be based on an exchange of understanding and ideas; therefore, the nature of the study is subjective. The engagement stage was an important stage for the constructivist approach. The researcher analyzed transcripts from the interviews and group meetings using thematic analysis to examine participants’ concerns and their perceptions of the community’s resources. Further, the participants, guided by the researcher, worked together to develop a strategic action plan to address child abuse and neglect in this community. This project encouraged community leaders to discuss the community’s strengths and main concerns related to child abuse and neglect. Interestingly, these strengths and concerns often mirror one another. Participants’ perceptions and recommendation are about safety, connectedness, human services access and child welfare of the focused rural town.

From suspicion to report on crime against children : an ethical problem for educationalists

Lindgren-Göransson, Jenny, Nilsson, Johanna January 2004 (has links)

/
The essay contains the process from suspicion to report and the ethical problem to report or not. The comprehensive purpose of the essay is too show how some working educationalists manage and should manage maltreated children out of different professional categories perspective. We also show different professional categories that are involved in the process and how collaboration between preschool/school and social services work on the basis of our respondent’s answers. We research literature about the subject from a broad perspective which prove that educationalists have a huge responsibility with the duty to report, but that the responsibility should be divided between preschool/school.

Our result is based on qualitative interviews and questionnaires on the basis of the categories; educationalists, social workers secretaries, principals, school welfare officers/educational psychologists and adults that have been maltreated as children.

Our review shows that many children are being maltreated but that the tendency to report has increased. Despite this there are children today who do not get noticed and educationalists that often have difficulties in reporting. Well-functioning collaboration between preschool/school and social services has proved to be very important in the best interest of children, which also literature has shown. We hope that this essay will help people who meet maltreated children so that these children get the help they need.
