How We Saved the World: A Multimedia Musical Drama

Dennis, Harold Edward Brokaw January 2013 (has links)
A monograph on the musical composition How We Saved the World, a multimedia musical drama written by the author, describes in detail the history of the writing of the piece, its context within his development as a composer, its context within our times, the writing and structure of the libretto, the characters and character types within the piece, their relationships with one another, the music of the piece and its construction. The two hour long composition requires 44 performers to stage: 14 singers, 8 dancers, and a conducted 21 piece orchestra. In addition to traditional acoustic instruments (winds, brass, percussion, strings) the orchestra includes electric guitars, drum set, and audio and video laptop performers. How We Saved the World is situated in a future time and begins with the premise that the world has been saved. Human beings have found a way to live in peace and harmony with one another and with the ecology of our planet Earth. We, the participants in the performance are sharing among ourselves the story of how human culture changed from the destructive, unsustainable practices and consciousness of the past. The libretto is included as an appendix. The score and all of the audio files needed to perform the piece are included as supplementary material. / Music Composition / Accompanied by one .pdf score and one compressed file.

Papageno’s love story

Sarna, Bartłomiej January 2024 (has links)
Even before I started studying at the SKH Opera, I was already contemplating what would happen afterwards. So it all started with the idea that I'd like to apply to an Opera Studio after graduation. I realised that the largest market for opera studies is in German-speaking countries, where I could continue to develop my talent and simultaneously earn money working in my profession. For example, in the Opera Studio, an Opera provides a monthly salary. So when I applied to the university, I had to submit the so-called document "Independent project". I didn't write much, so I'd like to quote it here: “The idea for my project consists of organising and performing a few concerts of German classical music in Scandinavia. In order to best prepare for that event, I would first like to build my vocal technique at a high level. This is my main goal. In the next coming year I would like to work on German musical literature but one of the biggest dreams is to prepare a role of Papageno from The Magic Flute.”As you can see, the goal was focused on potential future work and earnings. I was mostinterested in improving my vocal technique and working on the German repertoire. Even though German was never my favorite language and I avoided it as much as I could, I decided that during this year, I'd focus on the German repertoire while also honing my technique. It's worth mentioning - I usually and almost always sang in Slavic or Latin languages, and my favourite language in the opera world is Italian. But why the role of Papageno and the opera “The Magic Flute”? While browsing through the opera repertoire currently in production in the German language, I noticed that “The Magic Flute” was one of the most frequently performed, so I thought it could be a fascinating adventure. While perusing the opera score, I found a character for myself: Papageno5, a role not too low, not too high in the vocal tessitura, a role for a baritone voice. Even though I usually sang bass-baritone roles, I decided to take up the challenge of preparing the baritone part.

Motion, Space and Sound

Hernandez Trias, Gerardo Martin 11 January 2017 (has links)
As part of our daily routines, we continually move from one space to another. The existing conditions of the spaces we move through often impact the way we experience architecture. Whether we transition between spaces by walking, cycling, running, driving a car, or riding the train, we face many challenges on a daily basis. As it is crucial that designers understand how one single person or a group of people are able to move efficiently through the various spaces, my thesis research aimed at to exploring the following question: How can architecture enrich the experience of moving from one space to another, and bring people together into a shared space in a meaningful way? In response to the above question, I would like to research the ways in which mobility, in both vertical and horizontal dimensions, can create a positive and meaningful impact when bringing people together in a commercial-cultural type space. Therefore, my focus within this topic will be an exploration of how architecture may enrich this human experience, which should begin from the moment people arrive at the site, as this is a major space component of my project. Proceeding the moment we enter the first space of a building, and subsequently the different spaces within the building, and finally exiting the site. To accomplish the above aim, I have chosen to design a performing arts facility in which the main space will be an opera house in a metropolitan setting. Since the District of Columbia already has two such venues, I landed on the idea of providing the City of Alexandria with one of its very own. I propose The Alexandria Performing Arts Center, located on a waterfront site, that will include an opera house with a capacity of 1,400. The site is located at the Robinson Terminal North between Oronoco and Pendleton Street. / Master of Architecture

Exploring contributions to opera by The Black Tie Ensemble : a historical case study / Antoinette Johanna Olivier

Olivier, Antoinette Johanna January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation explores the contribution to opera in South Africa by The Black Tie Ensemble. The research follows a qualitative research design. It is a historical case study which is conducted against an interpretivist philosophical perspective. Data were collected through interviews conducted with prominent role-players in The Black Tie Ensemble and through various articles from newspapers and magazines. From the data collected, specific themes crystallized; the impact of performance and training opportunities flourished during the twelve years of the existence of this unique programme, the development of singers and sponsorship to the arts contributed significantly to the success or failure of this phenomenon and outreach programmes introduced the genre to the broader community. Recommendations from this study could lead towards the planning and guidance of sponsorships for similar programmes in the future and indicate the need for more training facilities of young singers throughout the country, whilst gaining performance experience in a theatre. Such training and experience could ensure a future career in singing and hence job creation. / MA (Musicology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Stegvist komponerande : strategier för att skapa flow

Blixt, Johan January 2017 (has links)
In this thesis I describe my work with a short opera called Dags which I have composed during my master program in composition at Kungl. Musikhögskolan. I use an auto-ethnographic method to describe my reflections of different aspects of composition. I want to expose parts of my compositional work, the deadlocks that can arise when composing and the strategies I use to get out of the deadlocks. I call the strategy I have created step-wise composing, borrowing a term from the study of counterpoint. I will describe how one as a composer can focus on many small problems and solve them one by one instead of trying to solve a large complex problem instantaneously. Music history, technical aspects of music and quotations are things that inspire me to write music. I will describe different methods for composing and also historical and contemporary practices for how to compose step-wise, and create one’s own flow. /
Uruppförande av kortoperan Dags med text av Emma Palmkvist och musik av Johan Blixt

Vývoj programové nabídky TV stanic Nova a Prima v letech 2002-2012 se zaměřením na vlastní tvorbu / Programme Offer Development of TV Channels Nova and Prima in Years 2001-2011 Focused on Their Own Production

Slavíková, Klára January 2013 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the development of TV listings of major Czech commercial channels, TV Nova and TV Prima, during 2002 - 2012. It focuses solely on their own production and covers the shift in aired genres, which has changed from the earlier variety shows and quiz shows to reality shows and soap operas that run the listings nowadays. Most TV production is based on so-called reality TV; there the emphasis is on capturing reality in a way, which is attractive for viewers and goes across many genres and styles. Consequently, the line between genres is becoming very thin and is no longer determining. The approaches these two channels took to structuring their TV listings are also very important since each had its own specific way. This thesis draws on theoretical grounds and covers important mechanisms affecting TV in the Czech Republic in three basic areas (global, technological and economic). It points out that globalization has brought about homogenized culture and international integration, which means many programmes are of foreign license. Moreover, we can see the trend of internetisation and convergence of TV content, which is increasingly influenced by modern technologies. The purpose of all this is high ratings that affect profits from advertising. And economic profit is for...
