Facing the Future in St. Bernard Parish, Louisian: Planning and Development

Chase, Gregory L 01 August 1984 (has links)
St. Bernard Parish (Louisiana) has undergone a transition from rural, agrarian characteristics to that of a suburban, industrial based community. Its fragile environment has been substantially altered by man's use. Planning and development strategies need to be devised to address the stress placed on the environment by these alterations, particularly dealing with coastal erosion, land loss and increased threat of tidal surge and flooding if development in the area is to continue. St. Bernard also faces a changing economy with the declines of its industrial based economy and employment base which requires that new forms of economic development are established to replace jobs those that have been lost. This thesis addresses these issues and proposes actions that could be taken to learn from the errors of the past to attempt to mitigate losses that have occurred by emphasizing planning and arranging priorities to create an agenda for the future which provides economic development and controlled growth within the bounds of Saint Bernard Parish's environmental capacity.

The Croatian Community of Southeastern Louisiana: Immigration, Assimilation and the Retention of Ethnic Identity

Bourgogne, Renee Danielle 18 December 2014 (has links)
This work is a study of a community of Croatian immigrants to Southeast Louisiana in the twentieth century. Drawn from a multidisciplinary approach that included spatial analysis of settlement patterns, quantitative analysis of seafood industry data, the records of voluntary associations, and guided by the oral histories of men and women of Croatia who immigrated to Louisiana, this work reveals a community that has managed to maintain close ties despite its distribution both in urban New Orleans and rural coastal Louisiana through links created by and supportive of the state’s seafood and restaurant industries. The study points out how the custom of returning to Croatia for marriage and the retention of property in Croatia helped the group maintain links with its national and cultural origins in ways not always seen with other ethnic groups in America, pointing out the range of the immigrant experience in the United States.

Living in abundance: the experience of living with chronic illness for adults affiliated with a community of faith with access to a faith community nurse

Unknown Date (has links)
The number of adults over the age of 65 years living with one of more chronic illness in the United States is an acknowledged health challenge for the 21st century. This qualitative research investigation examined the lived experience for adults living with one or more chronic illnesses in the context of a community of faith with access to a faith community nurse. Interpretative hermeneutic analysis was used for the phenomenological study. Findings indicate that the adults expressed their primary essence is living in abundance while living faith and living caring. The findings from this study describe the relationship between adults living with chronic illness, the community of faith and the faith community nurse. Further, findings from this study contribute to essential knowledge necessary for developing models of health care in the community for adults living with chronic illness and nursing care in the community that are distinct and complex. Findings will also support the development of interventions in contexts of faith communities to support and strengthen adults living with one or more chronic illness. The emerging specialty practice in nursing labeled faith community nursing holds promise to come alongside current models of health care to support living in abundance. / by Susan MacLeod Dyess. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2008. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. / Living and dying: an analysis of the socio-family configuration in parish of the Limoeiro â CE (1870 to 1880) is a study to understand the characteristics of building population and the types and forms of family organization more present in this society. In the decade of 1870, the configuration of socio-family in the parish of Limoeiro do Norte was characterized by higher rate of the free people in relation to the slaves, by higher rate of the brown people in relation to white people and higher rate of white people in relation to black people. The division by gender was characterized by a small majority for men. This social diversity was felt also in the family organization, which forms over the concept and ideal of marriage ranged from nuclear families, matrifocal and extensive. The religious and economics precepts influenced in the selection or rejection of same months to perform the marriage, the conceptions, the births and the baptisms. The die of the people by multiple factors occurred primarily on children up to seven years old and it was remarkably increased during the drought of 1877-1879. Simplified Sewerage Systems and Potential Application to Rural Louisiana Communities

de Toledo Sobrinho, Homero 01 May 2018 (has links)
Today’s rapid growth in population on sub-urban areas has caused an increase in fecal coliforms to be discharged to down-streams and lakes. The unaffordability of conventional sewerage systems makes it inaccessible to big part of the population of rural communities to receive proper sanitation. Since population growth is only projected to increase during the next few years, action is necessary to change the course of the future of rural communities, more specifically described on this report, Louisiana’s communities. One option to offer affordable sewerage systems to the Louisiana region is that we utilize of the Simplified Sewerage technology. Simplified Sewerage has been tested on several municipalities around the globe, especially in Brazil. The results of its application have proven to be conclusive and beneficial to communities.

The human cost of Presbyterian identity : secularisation, stress and psychological outcomes for Presbyterian ministers in N.S.W

Miner, M. H., University of Western Sydney, Macarthur, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences January 1996 (has links)
This study examines sources of clergy stress and ministers' coping strategies. The aim was to investigate Calvinist worldviews and their effects on Presbyterian ministers' choice of coping and stress levels. Specific hypotheses and questions were derived from process-stress theory and applications in the psychology of religion, as well as from secularisation theory. The author designed and conducted three separate, related studies. The first used 54 theological students comprising the pre-ministry stage. The second, focal study was of 65 parish ministers of the Presbyterian Church in NSW. These groups were chosen for an intensive study of the influence of Calvinist beliefs on stress and coping over two stages of ministry. The third surveyed 363 adult church attenders of Presbyterian congregations in NSW for specific analyses of stress-coping processes. Data were obtained through scales, questionnaires and interviews with parish ministers. Presbyterian students scored high on religious commitment but low in their endorsement of Calvinist beliefs. Presbyterian congregations also scored high on religious commitment and moderately high on their endorsement of Presbyterian beliefs. Major findings related to attributions and religious coping. Congregational members attributed life crises and hassles to God's allowing the situation, together with other human causes. Ministers had high religious commitment and agreement with Calvinist beliefs. One third scored at clinical levels of anxiety and burnout. Stress levels were strongly related to using an external locus of coping and less strongly to deficiencies in training and equipment for ministry. These stress levels were not directly related to role conflict or specific situational measures. Overall, findings pointed to inadequacies in process-stress theory for examining occupational stress. Ministry stress was best explained as a consequence of attempts to live out a Calvinist ideal in the absence of institutional and social legitimation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
