Embryology in medical education: a mixed methods study and phenomenology of faculty and first year medical students

Cassidy, Keely Marie 14 December 2015 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The anatomical sciences are experiencing a notable decrease in the time and resources devoted to embryology in North American medical education. With more changes assured, it is necessary to investigate the current trends in curriculum, pedagogy, and related experiences of embryology teachers and learners. To address these concerns, the researcher developed two online mixed methods surveys: one for current anatomy and embryology faculty and another for first year medical students. The faculty survey was followed by interviews with volunteers from that cohort. The researcher used a grounded theory methodology to analyze the qualitative components of the surveys, and descriptive statistics to analyze the quantitative components of the surveys. Both the faculty and student surveys illuminated the vast differences between the explicit, implicit, and null curricular components found in the numerous medical education programs represented. A combined grounded theory methodology and phenomenological approach was used to analyze the interviews with faculty. This generated a lived experience narrative of the phenomenon of teaching embryological content to medical students in the modern world, which led to a better understanding of the needs and challenges that face this subject matter and those who teach it. In this fluid era of medical education reform and integration, the perceptions and experiences of anatomy and embryology faculty and first year medical students are invaluable to assessing the curriculum and pedagogy of this foundational anatomical science and formulating evidence-based recommendations for the future.

Experience and participation implications of daily enhancement meaningful activity in persons with mild cognitive impairment

Ellis, Jennifer L. 01 April 2016 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Background: Persons with Mild Cognitive Impairment (PwMCI) battle progressive disengagement from personally meaningful activities that results in functional decline. Little is known about PwMCI experience of engaging in meaningful activities and relationships among MCI stage, confidence, depressive symptoms, and function. Daily Engagement of Meaningful Activity (DEMA) is a multicomponent, family-focused, tailored intervention designed to benefit PwMCI and their caregivers by facilitating goal identification, preserve engagement, and support adjustments to cognitive and functional changes. Objectives: The aims of this secondary analysis were to: (i) describe PwMCI experience of engagement in DEMA, (ii) evaluate for potential relationship among MCI stage, confidence, depressive symptoms, activity type, activity performance, physical function and (iii) evaluate ability of select outcomes to predict change in depressive symptoms and physical function, (iv) determine difference between participants when sub-grouped by ICF level. Methods: Mixed methodology was used to conduct a secondary analysis from the parent study. The parent study used a two-group randomized trial involving PwMCI and informal caregivers participating in the Indiana Alzheimer Disease Center DEMA program. Quantitative analysis (dyads: DEMA N=20, Information Support N = 20) examined outcomes at baseline, posttest and follow-up. Analysis employed: (i) Colaizzi's Method of empirical phenomenology to describe PwMCI experience of engagement in activity intervention related to perceptions of changes in confidence, activity performance, and physical function; (ii) Pearson's and Spearman's correlation to ascertain relationship; (iii) Linear regression to model the relationship between explanatory and dependent variables; (iv) Independent t-test to determine significant difference in activities and physical function. Results: Qualitative themes confirm improved awareness, adjustment, problem-solving, confidence and optimized function. Significant correlations were found at baseline and posttest for MCI stage, depressive symptoms, activity type and physical function. At posttest, change in self-rated performance predicted change in depressive symptoms. Additionally, those who engaged in activity at the ICF level of participation demonstrated a significant increase in confidence and physical function. Conclusion: Qualitative themes and quantitative results clearly indicate the positive impact of DEMA. Future research should employ a larger, randomized controlled longitudinal trial to ascertain DEMA impact on physical function, reduction of participation restriction and improved QOL.

Domácí příprava ve vysokoškolské výuce / Self studies at university level education

Charvátová, Anežka January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis aims to provide a rounded view of and information pertaining to the concept of individual preparation as part of a student's university education. The goal is to deliver wholesome theoretical materials in relation to individual preparation as part of a student's university education. The aim was to test the given hypothesis, which deal with the individual aspects of the individual preparation of university students. The work is split into a theoretical and practical section. The theoretical component covers definitions of concepts covering individual preparation as well as signposting university teaching itself. Further, it mentions teaching methods, feedback loops and the independence of the students themselves. These themes form the foundation of the practical section. The theoretical element has its basis in topical literature. The empirical section of the work stems from quantitative research, which defines how current individual preparation occurs in university students, whether it can be seen as typical for this type of education and whether there are any differences when it comes to considering degrees in either technical areas or the humanities. Data was gathered via questionnaires, which were then statistically analyzed. Respondents were approached randomly via the...

Fenomén stravovacích návyků uživatelů v kontextu sociálních médií / The phenomenon of eating habits of users in the context of social media

Šulcová, Barbora January 2021 (has links)
The original intentions for social media were communication and entertainment. However, social media keep evolving and since the birth of the first internet-accessible social platforms, we saw a significant shift. Currently, social media are used for many more purposes, such as an easy way to earn money, which is often used by both companies and individuals. Considering the fact that internet is minimally regulated in this aspect, the tempting vision of earning money or gaining more followers may often lead to disinformation in social media posts. It is not unusual to come across lifestyle and diet advice which may be unsuitable for every user, or even be dangerous to their health. Even then, these information are sometimes celebrated and shared further amongst users. This Masters Thesis focuses on how social media affect their users regarding forming and shaping their diet from the point of view of the users. Using both quantitative and qualitative research methods, the researcher is trying to find how social media consumers approach information learnt on these platforms, including their willingness to verify their validity.

Students Acceptance and Use of ChatGPT in Academic Settings

Hasselqvist Haglund, Jakob January 2023 (has links)
The swift progression of technology has radically reshaped our lives, becoming a big part of our daily routines and paving the way for advancements in communication, automation, and information processing. OpenAI, a company at the forefront of artificial intelligence since 2015, has made remarkable strides towards making AI accessible and beneficial for all (OpenAI, n.d.). A notable accomplishment in their journey has been the development of Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformers (ChatGPT). This study aims to identify and explore the factors influencing students' acceptance and use of ChatGPT in academic settings. Despite the rising prominence of ChatGPT across various disciplines, understanding its acceptance and utilization, particularly within the sphere of higher education, remains limited. ChatGPT holds immense potential as a valuable asset for both students and educators. Utilizing the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and a quantitative research approach, investigating these factors. The results suggest that student acceptance and use lies in Behavioral Intention, while Behavioral Initiation is influenced by both Effort Expectancy and Performance Expectancy.

A Model for Company Document Digitization (CODED) : Proposal for a Process Model for Digitizing Company Documents / En modell för dokumentdigitalisering inom företag : Förslag till en modell för att digitalisera företagsdokument

Bothin, Anton January 2020 (has links)
There exists many companies which wish to transition toward a more digital workflow. However, many of these companies lack the technical expertise required to undertake such an endeavor. To assist companies in this area, a digitization process model could be used as a stepping-stone toward successful digitization. Currently, however, there exists no such digitization process model. The purpose of this thesis is to suggest such a digitization process model. The goal is to help companies in digitizing their documents and their workflow. The research question used to reach this goal pertains to how a digitization process model should be structured. Due to the lack of currently existing digitization process models, different process models within the field of software engineering where analyzed as a basis. The research was qualitative and explorative in its nature, and it followed design science as its research paradigm. An extensive literature study was conducted before development of the model began. The model was evaluated using interviews together with action research. These interviews focused on evaluating the model based on five criteria which had been defined: (1) interviewee credibility, (2) semantic correctness, (3) syntactic correctness, (4) usefulness, and (5) process flexibility. The results of this thesis is the company document digitization process model (CODED), which, as the name suggests, is a proposed process model for document digitization. This model has been based on information gathered by, partly the literature study, and partly the interviews. The literature study proved the model to be unique, since no similar model existed prior to this thesis. While the interviews proved the model to be valid, since it accomplished all evaluation criteria which had been defined.

[pt] LIDERANÇA EMPREENDEDORA SOCIAL: ENTENDENDO ATRIBUTOS E PROCESSOS PARA INOVAÇÃO EM ORGANIZAÇÕES SOCIAIS / [en] SOCIAL VENTURE LEADERSHIP: UNDERSTANDING ATTRIBUTES AND PROCESSES FOR INNOVATION IN SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS

MARIANA DE QUEIROZ BRUNELLI 17 September 2021 (has links)
[pt] Práticas empreendedoras motivadas por propósitos sociais e ambientais têm ganhado reconhecimento mundial. No entanto, ainda existem muitas lacunas no conhecimento científico a respeito desse fenômeno. / [en] Entrepreneurial practices motivated by social and environmental purposes have gained worldwide recognition. Nevertheless, there are still many gaps in scientific knowledge regarding this phenomenon. This thesis investigates leadership attributes and processes that enable social endeavors. It encompasses two stand-alone essays that empirically investigate social venture leadership and the process through which it allows social innovations. Essay one research question concerned which characteristics, behaviors, and leadership skills are essential for social venture leaders to reach their business objectives. A qualitative research was conducted based on the Grounded Theory methodological protocol. Thirty-six actors were interviewed – social organizations leaders and their stakeholders. The results unveil eight essential attributes of social venture leaders: drive to cause impact, unswerving moral integrity, other-centered communication, constructive relational stance, team empowerment, co-creative problem solving, strategic network development, and high-quality delivery commitment. These findings suggest that one classic leadership perspective alone cannot fully encompass all the essential attributes of social venture leadership. Essay two research question concerned which psychosocial processes enabled by social venture leaders promote team creativity and innovation. A quantitative research was conducted, focusing on the team level of analyses, to verify the mechanisms through which servant and empowering leadership enable team creativity and team innovation in social ventures. A survey was conducted with a sample of 41 leaders and 73 team members from socioenvironmental organizations. The hypotheses were statistically evaluated through Partial Least Squares (PLS) structural equations modeling, using the SmartPLS 3.0 software. All hypotheses were confirmed but one. Servant leadership positively influences team identity and team commitment. However, the connection between these processes with creativity was not established. Empowering leadership positively influences team boundary spanning and team dynamic capabilities, which were associated with team creativity and innovation in social ventures. These findings are a unique contribution to the literature and contribute to a deeper understanding of which leadership processes are necessary to bring about social innovations to solve socio-environmental problems. Both studies advance knowledge on leadership and its role in social ventures.
