A pesquisa parte da premissa de que a gestão escolar, sobretudo na dimensão pedagógica, é um dos elementos capazes de favorecer o êxito escolar a despeito da origem social dos alunos. O estudo em questão tem como referencial teórico as contribuições de Fernando Abrucio, José Francisco Soares, Pam Sammons, entre outros autores, filiados à matriz de análise e interpretação da escola denominada de “escolas eficazes”. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, baseada no estudo de caso, com a utilização dos seguintes instrumentos metodológicos: observação não participante, questionário e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Os resultados mostram que a liderança pedagógica exercida pela coordenadora, o acompanhamento do trabalho docente e o Laboratório de Aprendizagem podem ser considerados os principais aspectos que contribuíram para o sucesso da gestão pedagógica na escola investigada. Contudo, as reuniões pedagógicas burocratizadas e a falta de estratégias coletivas que possam minimizar os impactos negativos do contexto na aprendizagem dos alunos são alguns dos desafios a serem enfrentados pelo grupo gestor. Nesta perspectiva, considerando a relevância do tema, a pesquisa buscou contribuir para o fortalecimento do debate sobre a centralidade da dimensão pedagógica na gestão escolar e auxiliar os gestores a refletirem sobre como suas ações podem colaborar na melhoria dos processos educativos, num contexto social adverso. / The present dissertation analyzes the pedagogical management, through the performance of the management team, in a public school in the outskirts of Juiz Fora that presents positive results in the Basic Education Development Index (IDEB). The research is based on the premise that school management, especially in the pedagogical dimension, is one of the elements capable of promoting school success despite the social origin of the students. The study in question has had as theoretical reference the contributions of Fernando Abrucio, José Francisco Soares, Pam Sammons, among other authors, affiliated to the matrix of analysis and interpretation of the school called "effective schools". This is a qualitative research, based on the case study, using the following methodological tools: non-participant observation, questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The results have shown that the pedagogical leadership exercised by the coordinator, the monitoring of the teaching work and the Learning Laboratory can be considered the main aspects that contributed to the success of the pedagogical management in the investigated school. However, bureaucratic pedagogical meetings and the lack of collective strategies that can minimize the negative impacts of the context on the student learning are some of the challenges to be faced by the management group. In this perspective, considering the relevance of the topic, the research has sought to contribute to the strengthening of the debate on the centrality of the pedagogical dimension in school management and to help managers reflect on how their actions can contribute to the improvement of educational processes in an adverse social context.

How do herbivorous mammals adjust their trade-off between food and safety ? / Comment les mammifères herbivores ajustent leur compromis entre acquisition des ressources alimentaires et détection des prédateurs ?

Afin d'accroître leur survie et leur succès reproducteur, les espèces proies tentent de maximiser leur apport énergétique tout en évitant la prédation, induisant un compromis entre acquisition des ressources alimentaires et détection des prédateurs. Cependant, les ajustements comportementaux des herbivores impliqués dans ce compromis peuvent être influencés par de nombreux paramètres environnementaux, sociaux et individuels et varier entre individus d'une population. Ce travail de thèse a pour objectif de mieux comprendre comment les herbivores proies ajustent leur compromis entre vigilance et approvisionnement en fonction du risque de prédation, du contexte social et de la disponibilité des ressources ; ainsi que d'étudier si ces ajustements varient entre individus. Basées sur l'étude de femelles kangourous gris de l'Est (Macropus giganteus) et de femelles impala (Aepyceros melampus), j'ai tout d'abord observé que bien que de nombreux facteurs influençaient la vigilance et l'approvisionnement à court terme, ces comportements étaient principalement influencés par la variation de la ressource à long terme. Ensuite, j'ai démontré que les variations de contextes écologiques et sociaux tels que le risque de prédation, la ressource alimentaire et la compétition induisaient des réponses comportementales différentes au regard de ce compromis, ainsi que sur la fonction et le coût de la vigilance. Enfin, j'ai observé l'existence de variations entre individus, plus ou moins exprimées dans différentes conditions. Il apparaît que les animaux régulent leur activité de vigilance afin de maximiser l'acquisition de ressources, ou d'informations sociales, tout en assurant leur sécurité / Prey species foraging under a risk of predation have to trade between food acquisition and safety from predation in order to increase their fitness. This trade-off is commonly investigated by studying the trade-off between foraging and vigilance activities. However, vigilance and foraging can be affected by numerous environmental, social, and individual parameters which can also vary seasonally and differ between individuals from the same population. In this context, the overall objective of my PhD was to better understand how herbivorous prey animals manage the feeding/vigilance trade-off at a fine scale, considering the wide range of variables that may affect it, individual variation, and the different functions of vigilance, using female eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) and impalas (Aepyceros melampus) as models. I observed that despite the many factors that shape vigilance and feeding rates over short time scales, these behaviours were mainly driven by variation in food resources over longer temporal scales. I also highlighted that predator and social contexts induced different behavioural responses in relation to this trade-off, and that decisions of prey to adjust their vigilance in terms of function and cost were driven by predation risk, food availability, and competition but varied between seasons. Finally, I observed that between-individual variation occurs for this trade-off but that this variation is context dependant. This thesis shows that prey animals constantly adapt their behaviour and strategies according to the situation they experience, in order to balance the acquisition of food and social information with staying safe

Diversas técnicas de recomendação são aplicadas em diversos tipos de domínios diferentes. Seja na recomendação de filmes, música, amigos, lugares ou notícias, sistemas de recomendação exploram diversas informações disponíveis para aprender as preferências dos usuários e promover recomendações úteis. Uma das estratégias mais utilizadas é a de filtragem colaborativa. A qualidade dessa estratégia depende da quantidade de avaliações disponíveis e da qualidade do algoritmo utilizado para predição de avaliação. Estudos recentes demonstram que informações provenientes de redes sociais podem ser muito úteis para aumentar a precisão das recomendações. Assim como acontece no mundo real, no mundo virtual usuários buscam recomendações e conselhos de amigos antes de comprar um item ou consumir algum serviço, informações desse tipo podem ser úteis para definição do contexto social da recomendação. Além do social, informações físicas e temporais passaram a ser utilizadas para definição do contexto físico de cada recomendação. A companhia, a localização e as condições climáticas são bons exemplos de elementos físicos que levam um usuário a preferir certos itens. Um processo de recomendação que não leve em consideração elementos contextuais pode fazer com que o usuário tenha uma péssima experiência consumindo determina do item recomendado equivocadamente. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo investigar técnicas de filtragem colaborativa que utilizam contexto a fim de realizar recomendações que auxiliem usuários no encontro de itens relevantes. Nesse tipo de técnica, um sistema de recomendação base é utilizando para fornecer recomendações para o usuário alvo. Em seguida, são filtrados apenas os itens considerados relevantes para contextos previamente identificados nas preferências do usuário alvo. As técnicas implementadas foram aplicadas em dois experimentos com duas bases de dados de domínios diferentes: uma base composta por eventos e outra por filmes. Na recomendação de eventos, investigamos o uso de contextos físicos (i.e., tempo e local) e de contextos sociais (i.e., amigos na rede social) associados aos itens sugeridos aos usuários. Na recomendação de filmes, por sua vez, investigamos novamente o uso de contexto social. A partir da aplicação de pós-filtragem em três algoritmos de filtragem colaborativa usados como base, foi possível recomendar itens de forma mais precisa, como demonstrado nos experimentos realizados. / The overload of data available on the internet makes recommendation systems become indispensable tools to assist users in meeting items or relevant content. Several recommendation techniques were has been userd in many different types of domains. Those systems can recommend movies, music, friends, places or news; recommender systems can exploit different information available to learn preferences of users and promote more useful recommendations. The collaborative filtering strategy is one of the most used. The quality of this technique depends on the number of available ratings and the algorithm used to predict. Recent studies show that information from social networks can be very useful to increase the accuracy recommendations. Just as in the real world, the virtual world users ask recommendations and advice from friends before buying an item or consume a service. Furthermore, the context of each rating may be crucial for the definition of new ratings. Location, date time and weather conditions are good examples of useful elements to define what should be the best items to recommend for some user. A recommendation process that does not respect those elements can provide a user a bad experience. This dissertation investigates collaborative filtering techniques based on context, and more specifically techniques based on post-filtering. First, a recommendation system was used to provide recommendations for a specific user. Then, only relevant items according to context preferences for the target user will be recommended. The techniques implemented was applied in two case studies with two different domains databases: one base composed of events and another of movies. In the event of recommendation, we investigated the use of physical contexts (i.e., time and place) and social contexts (i.e., friends in the social network) associated with items suggested to users. On the recommendation of movies, in turn, again we investigated the use of social context. From the application of post-filtering in three collaborative filtering algorithms used as a baseline, it was possible to recommend items more accurately, as demonstrated in the experiments.

Interessa-nos investigar em quais circunstâncias a arte tecnológica poderá atuar em questionamentos do cotidiano e da própria tecnologia. Para tanto, este percurso apóia-se inicialmente na teoria da Estética Relacional de Nicolas Bourriaud, aproximandose de diversas estratégias artísticas de intervenção ou desvio contra o uso homogêneo dos meios. A pesquisa contempla também a análise de diversos trabalhos artísticos de autores nacionais e estrangeiros, dentro do escopo assinalado, e resultou igualmente na elaboração de dois projetos poéticos em desenvolvimento conjunto com o artista Edgar Franco, o site Freakpedia e o Projeto Vislumbres Pós-humanos. / This work is a reflection about a new media art production which the context in different forms social, public, technological or economic is elemental part proposition. Interest us to explore what situations the technological art will act in quotidian questions and technology. Therefore, this way is supported initially in Nicolas Bourriauds theory Relational Aesthetics and also, in second moment, in several artistic strategies of intervention or transgression against homogeneous media use. Aimed to identify the social representations of teachers about what is to be a teacher in the context of the twenty-first century and identify the main difficulties, challenges and concerns of these professionals. The research followed the qualitative approach and specific features of the case study suggested by Robert Yin. Due to the impact caused by the social changes and new information technologies to students performance today is very different from that for which the school was initially thought. The school structure inherited from modernity does not fit in our postmodern reality. The subjects of this study were 12 effective teachers Childhood Education and Elementary 1st to the 5th year in the municipal area of a small city of Presidente Prudente. The data collected for analysis were based and relied on content analysis proposed by Bardin. The survey results point to need for implementation of curricula for initial and continuing training including practical sessions and discussions related to current challenges, since the reality shock has awakened the feeling of unpreparedness in the face of new challenges. Training programs for teachers, teaching activities and the educational system must fit the context of the new social order. The attempts for a reform have failed increasing the sense of crisis among teachers and contributing to the "teacher malaise." It is an urgent need for investment in teacher professionalism and development and increased social support for teachers to combat this social ill, which is the teacher malaise and improve the quality of education. / Esta pesquisa intitulada Ser professor no contexto do século XXI: representações sociais de professores está vinculada a linha de pesquisa 2 - Formação e Prática Pedagógica do Profissional Docente, do programa de mestrado em educação da UNOESTE de Presidente Prudente-SP. Teve como objetivo identificar as representações sociais de professores sobre o que é ser professor no contexto do século XXI e identificar as principais dificuldades, desafios e inquietações desses profissionais. A investigação obedeceu à abordagem qualitativa e às características específicas do estudo de caso sugeridas por Robert Yin. Devido ao impacto causado pelas transformações sociais e pelas novas tecnologias da informação a clientela escolar atual é bem distinta daquela para qual a escola foi pensada inicialmente. A estrutura escolar herdada da modernidade, não se encaixa na nossa realidade pós-moderna. Os sujeitos dessa pesquisa foram 12 professores efetivos de Ensino Infantil e Fundamental do 1° ao 5°ano da rede municipal de uma pequena cidade da região de Presidente Prudente. Os dados coletados para análise se fundamentaram e se apoiaram na análise de conteúdo proposta por Bardin. Os resultados da pesquisa apontam para necessidade de implementação dos currículos de formação inicial e continuada incluindo discussões e aulas práticas relacionadas aos desafios atuais, uma vez que, o choque com a realidade tem despertado o sentimento de despreparo frente aos novos desafios. Os programas de formação de professores, a ação docente e o sistema educacional precisam adequar-se ao contexto da nova ordem social. As tentativas de reforma têm fracassado aumentando o sentimento de crise entre os professores e contribuindo para o mal-estar docente . Faz-se urgente a necessidade de investimento na profissionalização e valorização docente e aumento do apoio social aos professores para se combater essa doença social, que é o mal-estar docente e melhorar a qualidade da educação.

Äldre personer utgör en allt större del av befolkningen vilket gör att forskning kring hälsosamt åldrande blir mer aktuellt. Flera studier tyder på att ånger kring det förflutna har negativa konsekvenser för hälsan och att upplevelsen av att vara tillfreds har en positiv inverkan på välmående. Däremot saknas kunskap om hur äldre blir tillfreds med sina livsval. Studien syftade till att bidra med en mer nyanserad bild av hur personer över 65 år förhåller sig till livsval och konsekvenser av dessa, samt hur upplevelsen av att vara tillfreds med livet kan uppstå. Semistrukturerade intervjuer genomfördes med 11 deltagare. Det insamlade materialet analyserades utifrån en induktiv tematisk analys vilket resulterade i fyra huvudteman och 12 subteman. Huvudtemana Positivitet, Acceptans och Självständighet innebär tre olika förhållningssätt till livsval. Social kontext belyser social påverkan på livsval samt hur gemenskap och att vara betydelsefull bidrar till välmående och mening i livet. Studiens bredare definition av livsval och det positiva fokuset bidrar till en mer nyanserad bild av äldres syn på livsval inom flera olika områden. Resultatet visar att upplevelsen av att vara nöjd inte nödvändigtvis kan likställas med att vara tillfreds, och att hur människan förhåller sig till valet och dess konsekvenser blir viktigare än det faktiskt utfallet i det aktuella valet. Äldre som söker behandling för hantering av negativa känslor kopplade till åldrande och livsåterblickande kan behöva olika interventioner beroende på hur de förhåller sig till livsval. / Older people make up an increasing proportion of the population which makes research on successful aging more relevant. Several studies show negative health consequences when regretting the past and that the experience of coming to terms have positive effects on well-being. Although, little is known about how older people come to terms with life choices. This study aimed to contribute with a nuanced picture of how people over the age of 65 relate to life choices and their consequences, and how elderly people come to terms with life. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 participants. The material was analyzed based on inductive thematic analysis, resulting in four main themes and 12 subthemes. The main themes Positivity, Acceptance and Independence involve three different approaches to life choices. Social context highlights the social impact on life choices and how community and being important to others contributes to well-being and purpose in life. The broader definition of life choices and the positive focus of this study contributes to a more nuanced picture of older peoples view on life choices in multiple areas. The result shows that the experience of coming to terms with life not necessarily can be equated with being satisfied, and that how people relate to life choices and its consequences becomes more important than the actual outcome of the choice itself. Elderly people who seeks treatment for dealing with negative emotions related to aging and life reminiscence may need different interventions depending on how they relate to life choices.

A collective case study of pupil truancy and the effects upon student behavior within academic and social contexts

Students who are truant from school may result in their becoming academically and socially unprepared to enter the work force. In an age in which higher paying jobs require technical skills from workers, employees with minimal skills and academic preparation have a negative social and fiscal impact upon the school community and the larger social order of the country. The purpose of this study examines the problem through personal, in-depth interviews of students identified as truants in order to provide a deeper understanding of the phenomena and the critical effects upon their academic and social development. Eight individual students are interviewed, examining their lived experiences as it relates to their education through a collective case study methodology. The reconstruction of these students' reflections on life events provides a subjective analysis of their school attendance, with implications for educators to begin prevention and intervention strategies prior the onset of the middle school experience.

Stories of women's midlife experience

The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of how women experience midlife. Social constructionism, which fits within the postmodern tradition, was the epistemological framework informing this study. Participants were asked to provide their life stories in text form. Texts were interpreted using the hermeneutic method of analysis. The researcher attempted to understand the midlife experience from the perspective of each participant whose meaning, attitudes and ideas have developed within a social context, keeping in mind that the researcher's own social context, ideas and values affected the interpretation of the texts. The research results add a new perspective to the `grand narrative' of midlife as a `crisis'. The new `voice' speaks of the possibility of positive development - of overcoming adversity; taking control; re-assessing life; breaking old patterns; discovering peace; putting down roots; confronting reality; gaining independence and finding new meaning. / Psychology / MA (Clinical Psychology)
