Tintin och framställningen av det främmande : En postkolonial analys av intermedialitet i Tintin au Congo och Tintin en Amérique.

Furberg, Karolina January 2021 (has links)
This essay examines through a postcolonial analysis of the intermedial aspects of comicbooks how stereotypes and depictions of the Other and the alien are formed in Tintin au Congo and Tintin en Amérique. The aim has been to call attention to the importance of the relationship between text and image to create meaning, as well as to gain a deeper insight into how different stereotypes are created and their function. Hergé illustrated the Tintin-books according to something that would come to be known as ”The Clear Line”, a way of drawing that focused on the readbility of the images. In this essay I argue that the simplicity of these readable images were used in his work as comic relief but also to create an awareness of deeper social issues in the world. There is a notable difference between Tintin au Congo and Tintin en Amérique where in the first album Hergé seems to be governed by these stereotypes, fully embracing them without questioning. In the second one however he is consciously and playfully using these images to make the reader aware of the problems with Othering, simultaneously using recognizable symbols that everyone can understand but with a critical gaze that not only reveals these problems but also condemns them. The use of these symbols and stereotypes highlights the importance of the relationship between text and image, as signification and meaning can differ depending on translation and the words used.

From Suffragettes to Grandmothers: A Qualitative Textual Analysis of Newspaper Coverage of Five Female Politicians in Utah's Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune

Cox, Holly M. 01 December 2008 (has links)
This thesis examines press coverage in the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune of five female politicians in Utah history: Martha Hughes Cannon (1896), Reva Beck Bosone (1948), Karen Shepherd (1992), Enid Greene Waldholtz (1994), and Olene S. Walker (2003). A total of 438 articles were reviewed using qualitative textual analysis. Coverage by candidate varied, though it was not in general overtly biased concerning candidate gender. However, the press did call attention to the gender of candidate and gendered commentary was present. The press also called attention to the rarity of women running for high political office and addressed the ability of candidates to balance the roles of wife/mother/homemaker with a political career. This thesis contributes to the overall understanding of newspaper coverage of female politicians and provides a window into the cultural as well as political history of Utah. Suggestions for further research about media coverage of female politicians are made.

“La voz de los mudos”: análisis de la traducción de la marginalidad en la antología The word of the speechless / The voice of the silent: An analysis of the translation of marginality in The word of the speechless

De Rutté-Medina, Valerie, Fernandez Valencia, Lucia Nicole 20 July 2021 (has links)
Translation studies have focused on literature since their early days. In the context of Latinoamerican literature, marginality played an important role in Julio Ramón Ribeyro’s narrative production. This investigation aims to analyze the translation of marginality representation through the description of characters and settings. Previous analyses of La palabra del mudo have addressed marginality of the characters from socioeconomic and etno-racial approaches. For the purpose of this investigation, we propose a new approach to address marginality, the psychosocial approach. Therefore, a qualitative methodology will be applied using content analysis and contrastive-textual analysis. A codebook will be designed to identify the textual elements in which marginality is found, followed by an analysis of translation techniques applied in order to identify any changes in the representation of marginality in the target language. / Trabajo de investigación

Att bli trollbunden av läsning : En studie om igenkänningsmöjligheter i två Harry Potter-böcker / Spellbound by reading : A study of opportunities for self-recognition in two Harry Potter-books

Nilssén, Anna, Erlandsson, Lisa January 2016 (has links)
To be able to develop their reading skills, pupils need not only to practise but also to be willing to practise. Being enticed to read is therefore an important factor for the development of reading. Research has shown that part of the attraction of reading is that readers can recognize themselves in the different constituents of a book, for example being able to identify with characters and finding the setting plausible. The books about Harry Potter have enticed many young people all over the world to read, and the question of what this attraction consists of is an interesting one, especially with regard to the fact that the books have many elements of magic and seemingly alien elements. The aim of this study is to investigate and reveal potential opportunities for self-recognition offered to the reader by the Harry Potter books. The study consists of a textual analysis focusing on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The study shows that both books offer the reader multiple opportunities for self-recognition, which can be linked to factors such as the reader’s emotional participation and the motifs in the books.

La caracterización de personajes a través de adjetivos en dos traducciones al español de la obra Lady Susan de Jane Austen / Characterization of characters through adjectives in two Spanish translations of Jane Austen's Lady Susan

Morón Avilés, Daniela 03 December 2020 (has links)
Literary translation is a complex process that demands a high degree of competence from the translator. Essays on Empirical Asset Pricing

Prasad Hegde (8086580) 06 December 2019 (has links)
<div>In the first chapter, our empirical tests use data from three sources. First, we obtain the Loughran and McDonald’s (hereafter LM wordlist) positive/negative wordlist and from the authors’ website. Second, we obtain the monthly Fama and French (1993 and 2015) factors (i.e. SMB, HML, Rm-Rf, CMA, and RMW) and momentum factor (MOM) from Kenneth French’s website for the sample period January 1994 through December 2016. Third, we obtain the monthly stock returns, monthly index returns, month end market value from the Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) as well as accounting information such as annual book</div><div>I the second chapter, we utilize five main datasets in this study. The first dataset is the stock market transaction level data for S&P 500 stocks, obtained from Trades and Quote (TAQ). The second dataset is the corporate bond transaction data from Trade Reporting and Compliance Engine (TRACE) through Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS) for the S&P 500 firms. The TRACE data provides over the counter (OTC) corporate bond market real-time prices. To examine the price discovery of bonds in equity prices we use a sample period of over 1,000 trading days from January 2004 through December 2008.</div><div>Our third data source is the institutional level transaction data from ANcerno, which provides transactional level trade data for corporate bonds and stocks for the first quarter of 2006 through the third quarter of 2010. Several studies have used equity transaction dataset to examine the ANcerno institutional trading behavior. See for example Puckett and Yan (2011), Bethel, Hu and Wang (2009), Chemmanur, He and Hu (2009), Goldstein, Irvine, Kandel and Wiener (2009). Additionally, Hu, Jo, Wang and Xie (2018) provide a comprehensive review of ANcerno dataset. The fourth source of data comes from Mergent Fixed Income Security Database (FISD), which provides details of bond characteristics and credit ratings from standard and poor’s (S&P) and Moody’s. Finally, we obtain the daily stock returns data from center for security prices (CRSP) database and match it with the daily bond returns to examine the lead-lag relationships.</div><div><br></div>

The art of rejection - why is the nuclear ban treaty dismissed by the nuclear states?

Pitkäsalo, Roosa January 2022 (has links)
Disarmament remains a contested topic within the nuclear weapons debate and it is included as one of the mutually reinforcing pillars of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). However, when the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) was mandated by UNGA in 2016 and later entered into force in 2021, it was immediately rejected by all nuclear-weapons states – China, France, Russia, the UK and the US – and their allies. The paradox of such a negative response to the new treaty despite their alleged loyalty to the disarmament pillar of the NPT was the starting point of the thesis and was examined through the theoretical lenses of constructivism, neo-liberal institutionalism and structural realism to pinpoint which offered the most tangible answer to the question at hand. The research was conducted by utilizing the method of qualitative content analysis on statements and working papers by the five nuclear-weapons states, and it concluded that – while all theories brought up interesting points – structural realism provided the most useful perspective on the matter through its take on states’ insecurity towards each other
