Energy-Efficient Turbo Decoder for 3G Wireless Terminals

Al-Mohandes, Ibrahim January 2005 (has links)
Since its introduction in 1993, the turbo coding error-correction technique has generated a tremendous interest due to its near Shannon-limit performance. Two key innovations of turbo codes are parallel concatenated encoding and iterative decoding. In its IMT-2000 initiative, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) adopted turbo coding as a channel coding standard for Third-Generation (3G) wireless high-speed (up to 2 Mbps) data services (cdma2000 in North America and W-CDMA in Japan and Europe). For battery-powered hand-held wireless terminals, energy consumption is a major concern. In this thesis, a new design for an energy-efficient turbo decoder that is suitable for 3G wireless high-speed data terminals is proposed. The Log-MAP decoding algorithm is selected for implementation of the constituent Soft-Input/Soft-Output (SISO) decoder; the algorithm is approximated by a fixed-point representation that achieves the best performance/complexity tradeoff. To attain energy reduction, a two-stage design approach is adopted. First, a novel dynamic-iterative technique that is appropriate for both good and poor channel conditions is proposed, and then applied to reduce energy consumption of the turbo decoder. Second, a combination of architectural-level techniques is applied to obtain further energy reduction; these techniques also enhance throughput of the turbo decoder and are area-efficient. The turbo decoder design is coded in the VHDL hardware description language, and then synthesized and mapped to a 0. 18<i>&mu;</i>m CMOS technology using the standard-cell approach. The designed turbo decoder has a maximum data rate of 5 Mb/s (at an upper limit of five iterations) and is 3G-compatible. Results show that the adopted two-stage design approach reduces energy consumption of the turbo decoder by about 65%. A prototype for the new turbo codec (encoder/decoder) system is implemented on a Xilinx XC2V6000 FPGA chip; then the FPGA is tested using the CMC Rapid Prototyping Platform (RPP). The test proves correct functionality of the turbo codec implementation, and hence feasibility of the proposed turbo decoder design.

Eduardo Martinelli Galvão de Queiroz 28 March 2008 (has links)
The recent growth in traffic loads in cellular networks has seen the need for a better use of system resources as its expansion is expensive. In the base transceiver station (BTS), the bandwidth availability is limited. Thus, in cellular networks the call admission control greatly influences the system performance because it determines the bandwidth use of the BTSs and if an amount of resources will or will not be allocated to a call. The network performance can be evaluated by parameters such as blocking probability of new calls, dropping probability of handoff calls and bandwidth use. This work proposes a call admission control that carries out the bandwidth borrowing when a call arrives and there is not enough bandwidth. The system makes use of a heuristic mechanism that determines the available bandwidth for the new calls according to some parameter values of the system. The bandwidth borrowing is applied to the cell ongoing calls until the minimum levels for each type are met. The algorithm was applied to the bandwidths and characteristics of a third generation cellular network, which supports voice calls, videoconference, multimedia interaction, e-mails, downloads and file transfers. It was also applied to a GSM/GPRS (global system for mobile communications/ general packet radio service), which supports voice and data calls. The results show improvements in the blocking probability of new calls, dropping probability of handoff calls and in the bandwidth use of the system.

Composant diffractif numérique multispectral pour la concentration multifonctionnelle pour des dispositifs photovoltaïque de troisième génération / Multispectral digital diffractive element for smart sunlight concentration for third generation photovoltaïc devices

Albarazanchi, Abbas Kamal Hasan 21 September 2015 (has links)
This environmentally friendly energy source can be exploited to provide an answer to the increasing requirement of energy from the world. Several generations of photovoltaic cells have been successively used to convert sunlight directly into electrical energy. Third generation multijunction PV cells are characterized by the highest level of efficiency between all types of PV cells. Optical devices have been used in solar cell systems such as optical concentrators, optical splitters, and hybrid optical devices that achieve Spectrum Splitting and Beam Concentration (SSBC) simultaneously. Recently, diffractive optical elements (DOE’s) have attracted more attention for their smart use it in the design of optical devices for PV cells applications. This thesis was allocated to design a DOE that can achieve the SSBC functions for the benefit of the lateral multijunction PV cells or similar. The desired design DOE's have a subwavelength structure and operate in the far field to implement the target functions (i.e. SSBC). Therefore, some modelling tools have been developed which can be used to simulate the electromagnetic field behavior inside a specific DOE structure, in the range of subwavelength features. Furthermore, a rigorous hybrid propagator is developed that is based on both major diffraction theories (i.e. rigorous and scalar diffraction theory). The FDTD method was used to model the propagation of the electromagnetic field in the near field, i.e. inside and around a DOE, and the ASM method was used to model rigorously propagation in the free space far field. The proposed device required to implement the intended functions is based on two different DOE’s components; a G-Fresnel (i.e. Grating and Fresnel lens), and an off-axis lens. The proposed devices achieve the spectrum splitting for a Vis-NIR range of the solar spectrum into two bands. These two bands can be absorbed and converted into electrical energy by two different PV cells, which are laterally arranged. These devices are able to implement a low concentration factor of “concentrator PV cell systems”. These devices also allow achieving theoretically around 70 % of optical diffraction efficiency for the both separated bands. The impact distance is very small for the devices proposed, which allows the possibility to integrate these devices into compact solar cell systems. The experimental validation of the fabricated prototype appears to provide a good matching of the experimental performance with the theoretical model.

Transport quantique en formalisme des fonctions de Green et interaction électron-photon pour la modélisation de cellules photovoltaïques / Quantum transport in Green’s function formalism and electron-photon interaction for modeling photovoltaic cells

Giraud-berbezier, Aude 11 December 2013 (has links)
This document present our work on the modeling of quantum transport coupled to electron-photon interaction in a solar cell composed of one quantum dot connected to two semi-infinite quantum wires. The proposed cell based on a dot in a wire, is a concept imagined in order to investigate quantum effects inside 1D structures in contact with 0D ones. The numerical simulation powered on the Merlin cluster (IM2NP) relies on Green’s function formalism. The philosophy of Green’s function formalism is introduced and then applied to the photovoltaic cell. An overview of the functioning of the cell is given. Results on the cell are presented in the wide band limit (approximation that simplifies the contact to wires). We observe an interlinked impact of the tunneling coupling (dot-wires coupling) and the optical coupling (to light) on the current. In the strong tunneling regime, an increase of the tunneling coupling decreases the current and similarly in the strong optical coupling regime, an increase of the optical coupling decreases the current. We investigate the counter-intuitive impact of the tunneling coupling in the strong tunneling regime through analytical calculations, considering only the first loop of the numerical code instead of the whole self-consistent process. We observe a transition in the current creation process while switching from the strong tunneling regime to the strong optical coupling regime. Results on the cell beyond the wide band limit approximation are presented in which the system exhibits another atypical response to illumination: I-V curve exhibits a negative shunt conductance! Finally, a realization proposal for the concept cell is described.

Fragebogen zur Identifikation von Wissensbarrieren in Organisationen (WiBa)

Hopf, Susanne 14 December 2009 (has links)
The Questionnaire for the Identification of Knowledge Barriers (WiBa) measures the handling of knowledge within companies and organizations. The WiBa-questionnaire’s structure is inspired by the knowledge cycle of Probst, Raub and Romhardt (1997, 2006) which describes a lifecycle of knowledge. The fourteen scales include the topics: transactive knowledge, loss of information, internal knowledge acquisition, external knowledge acquisition, meaning of knowledge management, storage of information, professional blindness and lack of awareness, poor description and misunderstanding, mistrust and micropolitics, handover processes, information flow, climate of communication, learning culture and need for improvement. The questionnaire primarily includes questions rated on a seven point scale but also a small number of open questions. The WiBa-questionnaire is part of the so called third generation of knowledge management: Because our society has changed from a production-based to a knowledge-based society, knowledge is one of the most important resources for companies. Yet it is frequently not used as effectively as it could be. In trying to alleviate this, companies often blindly implement standard actions that do not exactly match the companies’ needs and therefore do not work. Instead it is crucial to implement actions that precisely fit the weaknesses and particularities of the company. In order to do that, an analysis of the actual handling of knowledge in the company is needed – this can be done by the WiBa-questionnaire. The output of this questionnaire consists of a profile of knowledge-strengths and knowledge-weaknesses. The questionnaire thereby closes a gap among in the currently available diagnostic tools. There were three sources for the development of items: first, explorative expert interviews, second, results from research and third, other questionnaires. In the sequence of three surveys a total of 1.256 employees took part. The WiBa-questionnaire is objective, reliable and valid. Especially criteria-validity and construct-validity were proven by checking the interrelations with other questionnaires (work satisfaction, work description, organizational culture and behavior of the superior) and with demographic variables and attributes of the company. Because of the large number of participants in the surveys, there is a basis of benchmark data available.

[pt] ESTRATÉGIAS DE ENTRADA NO MERCADO BRASILEIRO DE TELEFONIA MÓVEL: ESTUDO DE CASO DA OI / [en] THE START UP STRATEGIES FOR THE BRAZILIAN MOBILE MARKET : OI'S CASE STUDY

ROBERTA FRANCO TERZIANI 28 March 2005 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the marketing strategies implemented by Oi, the first third new commer in the Brazilian wireless marketplace, as of the business pre-launch up to July, 2004, to identify which enabled the Company to achieve that performance. Despite the strong retraction of the economic activity in Brazil for the latest years, mainly from 2002 up to mid 2004, the wireless telecommunications plant recorded a significant expansion, outdoing the wireline telecommunications (2003) and attaining 59.7 million of telephone lines in October, 2004. The performance of Oi in the first 12 months of operations became a success, acknowledged by American and European analysts, considering that in one year of operations the Company obtained approximately 21% of the market share in its segment of operations. Based on the processing of the data and of the information gathered by means of interviews carried out with directors, on the document research into the reports of the Company and of the Parent Company, Telemar, as well as based on the external researches into publications, studies, reports and websites; we noted that most of the success of the Company results mainly from the marketing strategies, from the innovations in the distribution process and from the use of the pre-paid mobile phone to develop price strategies.
