The Role and Status of Women in the Fiction of James Leslie Mitchell/Lewis Grassic Gibbon

Hunter, Sandra F.M. 04 1900 (has links)
James Leslie Mitchell's critique of modern society, a society which nurtured aggression, colonialism, religion, racism, and gender bias, was rooted in his background, experience and commitment. Being a revolutionary writer, he held progressive and visionary views, and claimed his works were propaganda, carrying messages to reshape society on ancient values and socialist principles. In his Scottish short stories (written under his pseudonym Lewis Grassie Gibbon) wives and daughters were neglected and ignored, yet forced to do menial tasks on the farm. Women in his English stories and novels were better situated and educated, taking an active role in their own development, showing determination to exercise free will and develop self-awareness, and encouraging others to emancipate themselves. A number of characters accepted atheism and Communism, and believed in Diffusionism wherein people were simple, cooperative, without malice. Undoubtedly, Mitchell/Gibbon's crowning achievement was A Scots Quair. Chris Guthrie embodied the qualities of his earlier heroines. She loved the soil but disliked the workings, preferred the accuracy of English words and deplored the crude talk of the farming communities; yet she was impelled to carry on as a farmer. Chris was married three times, widowed twice, separated once, had one son, and few friends; and lived in a croft, a manse and a boarding house. She abhorred war, favoured birth control, had a glimmering of the Golden Age, and exhibited the attitudes, beliefs and opinions of her creator. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

The Political Thought and Activity of Heber J. Grant, Seventh President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

Aydelotte, Loman Franklin 01 January 1965 (has links) (PDF)
Heber J. Grant reflected, both consciously and unconsciously, a Mormon agrarian background and ideology. His moral fervor and idealism was in the tradition of his father, Jedediah Morgan Grant, the leading figure of the 1856 "Mormon Reformation." Grant's belief in self-sufficiency, thrift, solvency, and laissez faire government reflected the frontier environment and his business training; however, the dominant force of his life was the principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, especially after he was appointed an Apostle and later President of that organization. His outstanding traits were his straight-forward outspokenness and his persistence which largely explain his political behavior. The years 1882 to 1901 were Grant's most active political years with the exception of the prohibition movement which came at a later date. Although he held only two political offices--a term in the Utah Territorial Legislature and two terms as a Salt Lake City Councilman--he figured conspicuously in public affairs. In 1895 he had the opportunity, which he did not accept, of running in the first statehood election as Democratic candidate for governor of Utah. The Republican candidate for that position believed Grant would have won had he chosen to make himself available. However, Grant chose to devote himself to his Church. He later turned down two nominations for United States Senator. The prohibition movement in Utah from 1908 to 1917 witnessed Grant's active participation and represented his major excursion into political affairs. He stood for total abstinence as opposed to the local option laws and the unrestricted sale of liquor. Grant figured prominently in initiating the movement, remained interested in the movement during its nine year span--although with varying degree of activity--and again was conspicuous in the triumphant conclusion for prohibitionists. During these years he held several state posts in various temperance organizations; and the fact he held a prominent position in the Mormon Church made his prohibition stand an asset to the movement, although his position also kept him from being as active as he would have liked to have been. Because he was the most outspoken of the General Authorities, many times his opinions clashed with those of fellow Apostle, Senator Reed Smooth, a local optionist. After Grant became President of the Church in November, 1918, the once strained relationship between him and Reed Smoot was replaced by one of co-operation as Grant became converted to Smoot's importance to the Church and to Utah; and Grant often voiced his support. The New Deal met hostility from Grant because of the repeal of prohibition, the liberal legislation enacted, and the careless and overly generous public relief measures which he saw as sapping the pioneer initiative from the Mormons. At this time Grant introduced the Church Welfare Program.President Grant's political ideas were dominated by their moral overtones. Also reflected was the Mormon pioneer tradition of self-sufficiency. Grant's idea of "Church influence" was different from the views generally held, and he pictured himself a figure of forebearance. The restraint he did show was probably due in large measure to negative public reaction.

Zannin Skoglund, Emma, Elina, Eriksson January 2021 (has links)
This qualitative study aims to examine family therapists' views regarding fathers with a criminal background in treatment interventions. The results of the study are based on five semi-structured interviews with family therapists active in a municipality in central Sweden. The collected material has been processed based on a thematic analysis method. Interpretation and analysis of the result has been made on the basis of role theory and hegemonic masculinity. The results showed that the nature of crime among fathers is important for the views of family therapists. At the same time, the results show that the child's best interests always come first in family treatment interventions, regardless of the nature of the crime. The results also show that family therapists tend to see the father in his role as a parent and thus see his criminal role as secondary. Nevertheless, there is a clear view among family therapists of what a father with a criminal background is expected to be. The study's conclusions are that family therapists take on different roles depending on the situation and that the role is important. There are expectations of both family therapists views and fathers behavior in the treatment interventions. In order to have a better meeting, the family therapists need to see the complexity of the fathers with multiple roles of criminal background.

Teachers' and students' experiences and perceptions of formative assessment

Eriksson, Maria January 2016 (has links)
This research paper looks at teachers’ views, and use, of formative assessment in the subject of English 6. It also highlights students understanding and processing of feedback and their opinions of eight assessment tools. The study was carried out using mixed methods research with individual teacher interviews, a student focus group interview, and a questionnaire. My finding shows the difficulties with identifying formative assessment and working with this in a way that helps students in their development of English 6, and the need for tools to make feedback and guidance clearer for students. Furthermore, this study identifies the need for guidance from the Swedish national agency of education regarding how teachers should incorporate formative assessment in their classroom.

Transferring Juveniles To The Adult Court: A Factorial Survey Of Florida Prosecutors

King, Robin 01 January 2006 (has links)
Prosecutors have enormous discretion in the criminal justice system. Their decisions can ultimately impact and shape the course of the lives of the offenders whom they prosecute. This is certainly true for juvenile offenders considered for transfer to the adult court. Previous research indicates that serious, violent offenders are the most likely to be transferred to the adult court. However, very little is known on prosecutors' views of the role of the juvenile court, the process of transfer or the facts that influence their decision to transfer a juvenile to the adult court. A statewide survey of 800 Florida prosecutors was implemented using factorial vignettes. The results indicate that prosecutors support the idea of transfer generally, particularly when they are making the final determination to transfer to the adult court. Further, prosecutors indicate that juvenile transfer should be used sparingly, in extreme cases that are not appropriate to the resources of the juvenile court. The data were also examined to determine the effect of juvenile offender and juvenile offense characteristics on the decision to transfer a juvenile to the adult court. Analysis revealed several significant predictors of preference for transfer: age, threat to society, presence of a violent offense, ethnicity of juvenile, presence of prior adjudications, and amenability to treatment.

Att möta och stödja personer med psykisk ohälsa till hälsosamma levnadsvanor – distriktssköterskors erfarenheter / Meeting and supporting people with mental illness to healthy lifestyles - experiences of district nurses

Mellberg, Signe, Åstrand, Linn January 2022 (has links)
Background: People with mental illness run a major risk of developing somatic diseases because of an unhealthy lifestyle. Every third person who visits primary care in Sweden suffers from mental illness. The district nurses main job task is to provide health-promoting counseling and support patients to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Through solid health-promotion work in primary care, people with mental illness would reduce the risk of developing secondary diseases such as type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease due to unhealthy lifestyle.  Motive: The district nurse in primary care is often the first contact a patient with mental illness meets. Describing district nurses' experience of supporting patients with mental illness to healthy lifestyles is considered important to create an understanding and insight into the complex work it entails. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe the experiences of district nurses in supporting people with mental illness to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted (n=9). The interviews were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Results: The participants' experiences resulted in 3 categories: "Create a trusting care relationship", "Try different ways to support change" and "Overcome obstacles to success". The categories were summarized under the theme "Taking on a complex challenge” Conclusion: The result showed that the district nurses experienced this job task as a complex challenge, where the care relationship had a major impact on how the transformation was received by the patient. The district nurses described methods for motivating healthy lifestyles and highlighted several obstacles, both organizational and obstacles due to lack of competence, to supporting patients with mental illness to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Studiehandledning av flerspråkiga elever i lågstadiet : Studiehandledares arbete och syn på betydelsen avelevers flerspråkighet för deras lärande / Multilingual study guidance in primary school  : Tutors' teaching and views on pupils' multilingualism

Eliassi, Elias January 2023 (has links)

Wik, Nils January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and compare a Christian and transhumanist worldview, particularly with regard to the compatibility between their views on humanity and human nature. The analysis utilizes Leslie Stevenson's analytical framework of what constitutes a theory of human nature, coupled with the philosophical method of analyzing the contents of ideas, advocated by Carl-Henric Grenholm. Through examination of articles authored by transhumanists and representatives of the Swedish church, the thesis examines how, and in what way, transhumanist visions of the technological advancements of humanity could be argued to harmonize with the Christian notions of Imago Dei and co-creation. The analysis concludes by summarizing which arguments for or against compatibility prove to be most convincing and argues that, given certain essential conditions, there could be compatibility between a Christian and transhumanist view of humanity.
