Higon Cardete, Beatriz 04 November 2022 (has links)
[EN] From the end of the 20th century and in these two decades of the 21st century, a series of practices and proposals by artists, groups, theoreticians, and activists who share a feminist and queer/cuir/kuir position have proliferated in the Spanish State. Transfeminism brings together genealogies (feminists, LGTBIQ+, anti-racist, and de(s)colonial) that critically and complexly rethink their environment and history from dissidence. His epistemological proposal, his identity struggles, his vindication of rights, and his extensive cultural and political production have activated changes in the contemporary context in an unprecedented way. Our contribution to the transfeminist networks through 20 years of work from the O.R.G.I.A collective, allows us to elaborate an alternative historiographical account that accounts for the relationship between the political, the affective and the visual, and its link with the context, making use of self-history-theory to elaborate a critical aesthetic-political memory of his actions, his visual and cultural practices, and his texts. From situated knowledge and an embodied perspective, it delves into the "Frankenstein trousseau" of references, backgrounds, memories and imaginaries, which feed a good part of transfeminist artistic practices and connect them with their diverse genealogies. It reflects on other autonomous ways of accessing knowledge and producing it from self-management (DIY, DIWO, DIT). The relationship with the theories and texts coming from different contexts in round-trip translation processes is also analyzed, to see the singularity of the discourses generated in this particular context in relation to others such as the Anglo-Saxon, the French or the Latin American. Likewise, those references that arise from and about the transfeminist practices themselves are examined, and that take the pulse of their evolution and impact in the field of contemporary culture, especially since the arrival of queer theory. The changes that have taken place in the field of art and in some of its institutions have allowed a series of meetings in the form of conferences and seminars, in which political-affective relations have been consolidated. Its relevance, and the debates generated in each of them, have been related to the various visual and/or performative practices developed by transfeminist groups and artists, organizing a casuistry around the main topics of discussion. / Higon Cardete, B. The late Ming courtesan Ma Shouzhen (1548-1604) : visual culture, gender and self-fashioning in the Nanjing pleasure quarter

Merlin, Monica January 2013 (has links)
Ma Shouzhen (1548-1604) was a cultured courtesan who lived in the famous pleasure quarter along the Qinhuai River in Nanjing, the southern capital of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). She was talented in dance and music, painting and poetry, and surprisingly for her time, she was also a playwright. Although she was a celebrity of the prolific Nanjing cultural milieu and there is a good corpus of extant material by and about her, the particular contribution of Ma Shouzhen - her character and her work - have been marginalised, or even neglected, by the previous scholarship. This thesis is a cross-disciplinary study of Ma Shouzhen and is the first in-depth scholarly investigation into the entirety of her activities. It employs material and methods traditionally pertaining to the disciplines of sinology, history, art history, literary and drama studies. The thesis has a dual aim: first, to provide a nuanced understanding of the courtesan, her cultural production and social practice; second, to reclaim the agency and legacy of her character within the cultural milieu of late Ming Nanjing and beyond. These aims will be achieved through two main research objectives: (1) recovering and re-evaluating visual and written sources by and about the courtesan; (2) investigating those sources in order to comprehend her modes of self-representation and strategies of self-fashioning, analysed especially through the lens of gender. The main body of the thesis is composed of an introduction, five core chapters, and an epilogue; the chapters are structured so as to provide as complete a picture of Ma Shouzhen as possible. Chapter Two explores the space of the pleasure quarter, Ma’s biography and its entwinement within the complexities of the historical moment. Chapter Three focuses on her painting, Chapter Four considers her poetry, and Chapter Five explores her theatre practice; Chapter Six extends the investigation to focus on the construction of Ma’s historical character in later decades. In its content and aims, this thesis contributes to women’s and gender history, as well as to studies in visual culture and literature.

Van Velden, Christina Maryke 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis comprises a critical analysis of the relationship between form and function in contemporary iconography that contains religious themes. From the theoretical stance of Visual Culture iconography can be defined as ‘context-specific visual language’. I suggest that meaning is created not only through material usage but also through the hermeneutic content of images. By means of a comparison between an example of what I deem literal iconography and another of figurative iconography, I explore two divergent methods through which religiously-inspired iconography can be employed in the construction of visual texts. The two examples comprise of the evangelical poster Die Smal en Breë Weg (The Broad and Narrow Way) and Willem Boshoff’s Bread-and-Pebble Road Map (2004).

Light touches : cultural practices of illumination, London 1780-1840

Barnaby, Alice January 2009 (has links)
In the last decades of the eighteenth century, urban lives were touched by a series of innovations in the technology and aesthetics of illumination. Unfamiliar combinations of new fuel sources and auxiliary equipment (for example, curtains, blinds, glass, mirrors and lampshades) meant that cities looked and felt different during both the day and the night. The spheres of elite, popular, public and private culture explored, exploited and were fascinated by the cultural value of light. Through four case studies in the aesthetics of urban illumination, my thesis demonstrates how the acquisition of skills for the manipulation of transparent and reflective surfaces were crucial when negotiating a balance between self-expression and standards of taste, morality, gender and class. Rather than relying upon canonical examples of the period’s fascination with light, such as the high Romantic idealization of nature’s sunrises and sunsets, my thesis investigates more everyday encounters with light in the built environment: the fashionably genteel pastime of transparent painting; the gendering of light to design both domestic interiors and female identity; the appropriation of patrician top-lighting for public buildings of education and exhibition; and the popularity of illuminated spectacles in commercial pleasure gardens. I argue that these new possibilities of lighting temporarily enabled new possibilities of subjectivity. My historical phenomenology suggests that the formation of perception between 1780 and 1840 was actively directed towards changes in the world through a finely-attuned consciousness of light.

Vivier, Julie 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis aims to show the construction of the visual representation of "indigenous people" of the Cuzco region and its relation to the discourse of "authenticity" as defined by indigenismo, anthropology and tourism. We are interested in the role of visual and audiovisual media in creating an image of indigenous person perceived as "authentic" and a shared discourse about the Andes. The visual documents we are studying, all produced by Peruvians, include: a selection of photographs taken between 1920-1945 by Martin Chambi, the movie Kukuli (1961) co-directed by cuzqueños Luis Figueroa, Eulogio Nishiyama and César Villanueva and the tourism advertising by PromPerú entitled "Peru: Live the Legend" (2008). Our analysis highlights the documents’ mainly folkloric and anthropological representation of “indigenous people”, who are associated with origins, tradition and the pre-Columbian past. Our study also examines how the same images are an alternative to the representational strategy of lettered indigenismo, offering another view of reality. Technological images 1) show details not consistent with cultural stereotypes and reveal a more modulated world of identities; 2) create a space for collaboration –between photographer/filmmaker and models– that allows marginalized social actors to participate in their own representation. Finally, we establish the link between this image of Andean Indians and the tourism promotion of Peru.

Bouchard, Anne-Marie 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is concerned with an analysis of artistic creations and photographic documents displayed in French anarchist periodicals as efficient techniques of spreading social and political ideas and news. Such a production is contextualized in relation to the contemporary press with which anarchist periodicals engaged in a number of polemical discussions on art conceptions and on political issues, throughout the Third Republic.

Desgagnés, Alexis 10 1900 (has links)
This dissertation studies the production and consumption of images by Russian revolutionaries prior to 1917. The author argues that Russian revolutionary iconography emanates from a long-term process in which revolutionaries appropriated and subverted the images, means of production and visual strategies already available in their surrounding cultural context. This cultural borrowing is analyzed as an attempt of the revolutionaries to give an ideological coherence to an emerging but still disorganized political movement. The author shows how portraits and visual stereotypes have been fundamental in the construction of the revolutionary identity and consciousness, on one hand, and how a certain revolutionary imagination have been crystallized in the contemporary visual culture, on the other hand.

Publishing Chinese art : issues of cultural reproduction in China, 1905-1918

Liu, Yu-jen January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is an enquiry into the conditions in which various understandings of the newly introduced but vaguely grasped Western notion of ‘art’ emerged and sustained themselves in the name of cultural reproduction in early twentieth-century China. This Western concept of art was translated into Chinese as ‘meishu’, a neologism originally coined in Japanese kanji, and regarded as the embodiment of the ‘national essence’. Through a close examination of five art-related publishing events—the publication of the nationalistic journal Guocui xuebao; the launch of the art periodical Shenzhou guoguangji; the endeavours to compile a book collection on art, Meishu congshu; the making of the text Zhonguo yishujia zhenglüe which claimed to be a history book of Chinese ‘meishu’; and an example of image appropriation from Stephen Bushell’s Chinese Art—this thesis explores the ways in which different ‘neologistic imaginations’ of the term ‘meishu’ were constructed through publishing practices attempting to preserve and reproduce the ‘national essence’, by creating from the existent tradition a category of ‘art’ equivalent to that in the European West. Unlike previous scholarship, which deems any understanding of ‘meishu’ that deviated from the ‘authentic’ European model a ‘misconception’, this thesis sees these disparate understandings of ‘meishu’ as equally valid statements competing for dominance in the discursive field of art. This thesis thus argues that there existed at least three modes of utterances regarding the notion of ‘meishu’ in early twentieth-century China, and that the success of any such given utterance depended upon the acceptance of the authentic quality argued in its strategy of cultural reproduction. This thesis hence not only offers a detailed analysis of each publishing event, but also provides an interpretative framework within which the recognition of these utterances can be analysed by their strategic approaches to claiming cultural authenticity.

The celebrity gossip column and newspaper journalism in Britain, 1918-1939

Newman, Sarah Louise January 2014 (has links)
This thesis analyses the content, tone, form and authorship of the national newspaper gossip column 1918-1939, as a new means through which the qualities of the popular press in this period can be more closely defined. Often dismissed as an example of the sensational, Americanization of early twentieth-century popular culture, the celebrity gossip column has been loosely grouped with the friendly, informal language and bolder formatting of the ‘New Journalism’ of the late nineteenth century and the development of the dramatic ‘human-interest’ stories of ‘everyday life’ in the interwar period (LeMahieu, 1988; Wiener, 1988). Through a comparative study of six newspapers including the Daily Express, Daily Mail and News of the World, I analyse the changing representation of the celebrity subject, and, originally, the shifting character and persona of the gossip columnist. Whereas some historians have analysed the content of newspapers without considering the questions of the newspaper’s production, I analyse newspaper employment records, gossip columnists’ memoirs and their unpublished letters and diaries to define the specific economic, social and cultural circumstances which, I argue, influenced their public portrayal. Also, in examining the unpublished correspondence between editors, proprietors and columnists and the burgeoning print culture of journalistic training manuals and professional memoirs, I provide a history of the press’s professionalization in this period. The national popular press has often been used as a historical source to define national character and national identity in the interwar period (Bland, 2008; Kohn, 1992). By scrutinizing the content and production of the gossip column and particularly the class, behaviour, interactions and subject matter of the columnist, I argue that the gossip column presented a version of ‘Britishness’ that was not so inward-looking and domesticated as so many accounts of interwar Britain suggest.
