Developing ideation cards to support the design of mixed reality games

Mixed reality games combine interactive digital content with real world environments, objects, and actors by utilizing a multitude of different sensors. While offering plenty of opportunities for designers, they are also notoriously difficult to design. This is in part due to them still being a relatively new form of gaming with only very few examples of commercially successful games. This means that the majority of aspiring designers lacks knowledge about the design space of these games – something that is crucial in order to create new and exciting experiences. While there exist several authoring tools to facilitate the development of mixed reality games, these tools do not provide guidance on the game design aspects. The design of mixed reality games is likewise bringing together experts from different domains (e.g. game design, technology, locales). In order to support this multifaceted and collaborative design process I have developed the Mixed Reality Game Cards. These are a deck of ideation cards that encapsulate the design space of mixed reality games in the form of physical playing cards. The cards can be used for rapid idea generation (i.e. creating a multitude of ideas from scratch in a short time) and in-depth idea development (i.e. further expanding and refining an idea). The Mixed Reality Game Cards consist of four types of cards to support idea generation as well as idea development. Opportunity Cards are the building blocks of an idea and describe potential elements of a design. Question Cards prompt the design group to consider the experience from different angles to refine the design. Challenge Cards surface typical design issues and problems that might occur. These domain-specific cards are supported by Theme Cards that are taken from the board game Dixit in order to provide additional domain-extrinsic sources of inspiration. I developed the Mixed Reality Game Cards iteratively over the course of seven studies following a Research through Design approach. This provided valuable insight into what makes ideation cards such powerful facilitators of collaborative design sessions. I identify content, appearance, and rules as crucial elements under direct control of an ideation card designer and tangible as well as playful interactions as dynamics that emerge during an ideation session. This thesis describes the development of the Mixed Reality Game Cards and uses the insights gained from this process to reflect on ideation cards as design tools in general, expanding our understanding of them.

Lazer sério e envelhecimento : explorando a carreira de corredores de longa distância em um grupo de corridas de rua no sul do Brasil

O problema central desta tese está na carreira de corredores participantes em um grupo de corridas no sul do Brasil o que levou à reflexão sobre como ela se relaciona com seu envelhecimento. Fez-se uma tentativa por explicar esse elemento aproximando-o da proposta conceitual de lazer de Robert A. Stebbins (2008) dentro de um contexto ainda pouco conhecido e explorado. Foram propostos os seguintes objetivos específicos para a exploração: 1. aproximar a perspectiva de lazer de Stebbins (2008) ao contexto estudado, com ênfase no conceito de carreira; 2. identificar as características das práticas de lazer dos corredores do grupo de corridas; 3. analisar as inter-relações entre as práticas de lazer dos corredores e suas carreiras com o seu envelhecimento. Para a compreensão do lazer no grupo de corredores, foram feitas observações diretas e participantes, incluindo conversas informais com os atores do meio social e mantendo-se seus registros em diário de campo. Adicionalmente, foram feitas entrevistas semi-estruturadas, com o objetivo de captar informações que não eram alcançáveis pelas observações. Para a construção dos dados, as entrevistas foram transcritas e codificadas e, cruzadas com as informações obtidas nas observações, sendo possível identificar temas relevantes para os corredores. Com a concatenação de tais temas, foi possível conceber um modelo teórico que explica e evidencia os possíveis delineamentos das carreiras dos corredores dentro de um contexto que engloba seus elementos mais amplos, como os processos que envolvem a constituição de grupos de corridas e configuram o lazer e envelhecimento dos corredores; elementos que se relacionam com a forma de interpretação e interação dos corredores com o contexto em que experimentam o lazer, como a relativização de valores e o humor; e, finalmente, elementos que são parte inerente do lazer que elegeram por realizar, como a aprendizagem das habilidades necessárias ao desenvolvimento das atividades. Como forma de aproximar o modelo à educação, há uma síntese propositiva de elementos educacionais que bem poderiam ser aprofundados por futuras pesquisas e discutidos em relação ao envelhecimento e carreira dos corredores do grupo. / The core problem in this thesis is on the career of runner who participates in a running group in Southern Brazil which led to reflection about how it relates to their aging. It was done an attempting to explain this element in an unexplored and almost unknown field as part of serious leisure perspective, the theoretical framework proposed by Robert A. Stebbins (2008). As specific objectives it was proposed: 1. to get the group activities close to the serious leisure perspective, emphasizing on career; 2. to identify the features of runners leisure in the running group; 3. to analyze the interrelations among leisure practices of runners, their careers and aging. Aiming to comprehend the leisure of the running group, direct and participant observations were held, including informal talking with social actors, and they were recorded in a field notebook. Additionally, semi structured interviews were held intending to catch information not reachable just through observations. To data construction, the interview were transcribed and coded and crossed with information obtained in observations, being it possible to identify relevant themes on runners’ careers. Concatenating these themes, it was possible to develop a theoretical model to explain the runners’ career and its possible designs in a context which includes its broader elements, as the processes of constitution of the running group which configures leisure and aging of runners; elements related to the way runners interpret and interact with the context they experience their leisure, as the values relativization and humour; and, finally, elements which are inherent part of the kind of leisure they chose to do, as learning required abilities and skills. As a way of put close the model and education it was done a propositional synthesis of educational issues which could be detailed in future investigations and discussed in their relation to aging and career in the running group.

A pesquisa se estabelece com fundamento no seguinte questionamento: Quais as relações entre a construção da Universidade Federal da Bahia e o desenvolvimento e a fruição das vivências e ações no lazer soteropolitanos, no período entre 1945 e 1955? A partir deste problema, apontamos como hipótese, a noção de que a UFBA, a partir de suas ações, especificamente as do campo da cultura, influenciou e ao mesmo tempo, recebeu influência dos modos de lazer da cidade do Salvador, entre os anos de 45 e 55. Partindo desses elementos, nossa proposta de estudo objetivou investigar o processo histórico de constituição do lazer, em Salvador, entre os anos de 45 e 55 do século XX, especificamente a partir da formação da Universidade Federal da Bahia. Pretendemos também perceber como a repercussão dessa instituição, através das suas ações, se relacionou com a organização do fenômeno lazer na cidade, levando em consideração as diversas rotas, rotinas e rupturas que o fenômeno possivelmente teve nesse período, em consonância com os próprios projetos de mudança da cidade. Para o desenvolvimento deste estudo, como metodologia, optamos por uma revisão de literatura que dialogasse com o contexto e com os temas em foco, ou seja, estudos sobre a fundação da UFBA, sobre o fenômeno lazer, sobre a cidade e as ideias de modernidade. Ainda, na análise destas literaturas, utilizamos fontes históricas, específicas, jornais e revistas de época, notadamente o jornal A Tarde, por entendermos que este representava a conjuntura soteropolitana e seu cotidiano. Como conclusão, entendemos que houve uma interface entre a construção da UFBA e a produção, incorporação de novas formas de lazer pela cidade. / ABSTRACT This research work is part of the Post-Graduate Program in Education (PPGE), Faculty of Education, Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) in the subject line Education, Culture and Leisure Body, placing your subject in research issues relating to Leisure City History and Education, discussing the theme of plurality and diversity, from the study of these practices in the state of Bahia, more directly in Salvador. The research is established on the basis of following question: What are the relations between the construction of the Universidade Federal da Bahia and the development and enjoyment of experiences and actions in soteropolitanos leisure, in the period between 1945 and 1955? From this issue, we point out as a hypothesis, the notion that the UFBA, from his actions, specifically the field of culture, influenced and at the same time, received influence of leisure modes of Salvador, between the years 45 and 55. Based on these elements, our proposed study aimed to investigate the historical process leisure Inception in Salvador, between 45 and 55 of the twentieth century, specifically from the formation of the Universidade Federal da Bahia. We also aim to understand how the impact of this institution, through their actions, were related to the organization of leisure in the city phenomenon, taking into account the different routes, routines and breaks the phenomenon possibly had in this period, in line with their own projects change the city. To develop this study, as a methodology, we chose a literature review that dialogue with the context and the focus on themes, ie studies on the foundation of UFBA on the leisure phenomenon of the city and the ideas of modernity. Still, the analysis of these literatures, we use historical sources, specific, newspapers and magazines of the time, notably the newspaper A Tarde, for we understand that these represented the soteropolitana environment and their daily lives. In conclusion, we believe that there was an interface between the construction of the UFBA and production, incorporating new forms of recreation for the city.

It introduces the pedagogue of leisure, his vocational training, profile and application. Last but not least, closer to the ties of labor market, it covers the unemployment and status of university graduates on the labor market. The last chapter presents the results of the performed research. The research focused on finding employment of graduates of leisure education from Faculty of Theology of University of South Bohemia on the czech labor market in relation to this field, their preparation for practice and obtaining their opinions about that field of study.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Esta Tese de Doutorado foi elaborada com a pretensão de contribuir para as reflexões políticas acerca do lazer e dos esportes. A compreensão que há confusões conceituais entre eles e a convicção de que suas características favorecem o uso ideológico dessas práticas foram determinantes para o aprofundamento destes estudos. Nosso entendimento é que essas atividades se legitimam como direitos sociais e, como tal, deveriam ser contempladas no conjunto das Políticas Públicas sejam em nível federal, estadual ou municipal. Entretanto, aqui se revelam as contradições que subsidiam as análises centrais dessa Tese. É fato que o lazer e os esportes estiveram presentes nos programas das políticas sociais de diferentes governos brasileiros em distintas épocas, entretanto, o protagonismo atribuído a eles está marcado pela ideologização de suas propostas de ação. Essa hipótese pôde ser comprovada na recuperação histórica que fizemos neste trabalho. O objetivo principal da pesquisa era a análise das Políticas Públicas de Esportes e Lazer implementadas pela Era Vargas e Governo Lula para estabelecer comparações entre eles e, por esse motivo nos dedicamos a esses dois períodos históricos, emblemáticos e permeados de contradições políticas e sociais. Inquietava-nos a percepção de que, dois governos ideologicamente distintos fizessem uso dos mesmos instrumentos no diálogo com a classe trabalhadora. A contextualização dos governos dos dois líderes demarcou a analogia entre eles na utilização dos preceitos desenvolvimentistas, nacionalistas e populistas. Ainda que essas aproximações em níveis mais gerais tenham apontado coincidências relevantes, a principal constatação de nossa Tese foi a similaridade no uso ideológico do lazer e dos esportes, o que comprovou nossas intuições iniciais. Enquanto Getúlio Vargas associou as concessões de direitos trabalhistas aos programas de Recreação Operária e ao estímulo do ufanismo nacional articulado com a seleção brasileira de futebol, Lula adotou o assistencialismo explícito, incentivou a espetacularização dos esportes de rendimento e proporcionou a realização histórica dos Megaeventos Esportivos em série, no Brasil. Na Era Vargas foi possível constatar o lazer contribuindo para a domesticação dos corpos, os esportes para estabelecer uma relação harmoniosa entre dominantes e dominados e o futebol para a divulgação do regime interna e externamente. Já no Governo Lula, percebemos a retração das políticas sociais nas questões do lazer; os programas de esportes, predominantemente voltados para a descoberta de talentos e a priorização do espetáculo esportivo. A análise que fizemos não deixa dúvidas que os princípios liberais de fortalecimento do capital e aumento dos lucros, norteadores da política econômica mundial e balizadores da política macro do Governo Lula, se refletiram na definição de suas Políticas Públicas de Esportes e Lazer, que em nosso entendimento se resumiram na realização dos Megaeventos Esportivos. / This Thesis has been developed to contribute to the political reflections about the leisure and sports. The understanding that there is conceptual confusion between them and the conviction that their ideological characteristics favor the use of these practices were instrumental in deepening these studies. Our understanding is that these activities are legitimated as social rights and, as such, should be included in the set of public policies are at the federal, state and municipal.However, here we reveal the contradictions that support the analysis of this central thesis. It is a fact that leisure and sports attended the programs of social policies from different Brazilian governments at different times, but, the role assigned to them is marked by the ideology of its proposed actions. This hypothesis could be proven in historical recovery that did this work.The main objective of the research was the analysis of Public Policy Sports and Leisure implemented by "Era Vargas" and Government Lula to establish comparisons between them and for this reason we are dedicated to these two historical periods, symbolic and permeated with political and social contradictions. Worred us the perception that two ideologically distinct governments do use the same instruments in dialogue with the working class.The contextualization of the governments of the two leaders staked out the analogy between them in the use of precepts developmentalist nationalists and populists. Although these approaches in more general levels have pointed coincidences relevant, the main finding of our thesis was the similarity in ideological use of leisure and sports, which confirmed our initial intuitions.While Vargas associate the concessions to labor rights programs Recreation Worker and the stimulation of national euphoria articulated with the Brazilian soccer team, Lula adopted explicit welfare, encouraged the spectacle of sports performance and provided the historical realization of Megaevents in Sports series in Brazil. In "Era Vargas" it was established leisure contributing to the domestication of bodies, sports to establish a harmonious relationship between rulers and ruled and football for the dissemination of the regime internally and externally. In the Lula government, realize the retraction of social policies on issues of leisure, sports programs, predominantly aimed at discovering talents and prioritization of sporting spectacle.We have analyzed leaves no doubt that the principles liberal of capital strengthening and increased profits, guiding the global economic policy and guide for the macro policy of the Lula government, were reflected in the definition of its Public Policy for Sports and Recreation, which in our understanding is summarized in implementation of Megaevents Sports

Como objetivo principal, buscou-se compreender como estão espacializados os espaços públicos de lazer em Teresina (PI), seus principais problemas e potencialidades e os específicos foram entender sua conservação, localização e utilização. O lazer tornase cada vez mais importante para a qualidade de vida das pessoas, uma vez que se tem atualmente uma rígida separação entre tempo do trabalho e tempo do lazer, nas cidades este ganha destaque, pois esta separação é ainda mais rígida. Os espaços públicos presentes nas cidades devem, portanto, de forma democrática, permitir o acesso ao lazer para todas as pessoas independente de sua classe social; isso porque o lazer passou a ser importante conteúdo da vida urbana. A vertente teórico/metodológica, centrada na dialética, permitiu uma análise dos espaços públicos de lazer de Teresina como um fenômeno social rico em contradições. Os procedimentos metodológicos adotados foram: pesquisa bibliográfica, pesquisa documental, observação, pesquisa de campo com a aplicação de questionários e entrevistas. O recorte espacial da pesquisa foi a cidade de Teresina, e a amostra utilizada foram dez bairros, sendo dois de cada zona da cidade, foram ainda analisados os espaços públicos de lazer maiores existentes na cidade. A análise empreendida nesta pesquisa permitiu observar que a cidade de Teresina ainda está muito carente no que diz respeito à existência, distribuição e estruturação de seus espaços públicos de lazer. Constatou-se que apesar de a sociedade teresinense ter diversificado suas formas de lazer, ao longo do tempo, as políticas urbanas no sentido de equipar os bairros de espaços públicos não têm sido eficazes. Além disso, existem outros entraves, como a falta de conservação dos espaços públicos... / This research on the urban geography of Teresina, focuses on public recreational areas of the city, its distribution, appropriation, conservation. As a main goal, we sought to understand how the public leisure spaces in Teresina-PI are specialized, their main problems and potentialities. Leisure becomes increasingly important to life quality, since it currently has a strict separation between work time and leisure time, this is highlighted in the cities, because this separation is even more rigid. The public spaces of cities, therefore, should in a democratic manner, allow access to recreation for all people regardless of their social class, this because leisure has become an important content of urban life. The theoretical and methodological strand focused on dialectics allowed an analysis of public recreational areas of Teresina as a social phenomenon, rich in contradictions. The methodological procedures adopted were: literature review, documentary research, observation, field research with questionnaires and interviews. The spatial area of research was the city of Teresina, and the sample used were 10 districts two in each area of the city, the largest leisure public spaces existing in the city were further analyzed. The analysis undertaken in this study allowed us to observe that the city of Teresina is still very needy regarding the existence, distribution and structuring of its public spaces for leisure. It was verified that although the society has diversified its forms of leisure over time, urban policies towards equipping the neighborhoods with public spaces have not been effective. In addition, there are other barriers such as lack of maintenance of existing public spaces and urban violence that puts people off of these places

Understanding family physical activity and health related behaviours : a multi-layered approach

In spite of the growing awareness of the importance and health enhancing benefits of physical activity (Anderson et al., 2000; Barengo et at., 2004; Kaleta et al., 2006) the population still remain predominantly inactive (Haskell et at., 2007). Limited UK published data (to date) has simultaneously examined children and families health and physical activity patterns (Wing, 2000). The research aimed to explore and better understand the determinants associated with children and families health related behaviour and physical activity patterns and investigate the underlining factors which direct current and guide future health related behaviour choices. Prior to Study 1 an extensive needs assessment of the area (gathering data on the children and families literacy levels and understanding of research) was undertaken to assist in the development of Study 1's measures. Study 1 then utilised a parental (Goding, 1985; Baker et al., 1994) and children's (Baldings, 1997) health related behaviour questionnaire to explore the habitual physical and nutritional behaviours of children and their families in Knowsley (UK) thus creating a baseline of data to investigate further. One hundred and fifteen children (n=115; M=55, F=60) mean age of 8.6 years completed the self-report questionnaire from five Knowsley MBC (UK) primary schools. Fifty-seven parents (n=57; F=54, M =3) completed and returned the postal self-report questionnaire. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS for windows Version 7 and descriptive statistics (cross tabulation with two dimensional tables), frequency distributions and Chi Square used to assess the children and parents' nominal health related behaviour results.
